Nuclear modification factors of phi mesons in d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) has performed systematic measurements of phi meson production in the K+K- decay channel at midrapidity in p+p, d+Au, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(S_NN)=200 GeV. Results are presented on the phi invariant yield and the nuclear modification factor R_AA for Au+Au and Cu+Cu, and R_dA for d+Au collisions, studied as a function of transverse momentum (1<p_T<7 GeV/c) and centrality. In central and mid-central Au+Au collisions, the R_AA of phi exhibits a suppression relative to expectations from binary scaled p+p results. The amount of suppression is smaller than that of the neutral pion and the eta meson in the intermediate p_T range (2--5 GeV/c); whereas at higher p_T the phi, pi^0, and eta show similar suppression. The baryon (protons and anti-protons) excess observed in central Au+Au collisions at intermediate p_T is not observed for the phi meson despite the similar mass of the proton and the phi. This suggests that the excess is linked to the number of constituent quarks rather than the hadron mass. The difference gradually disappears with decreasing centrality and for peripheral collisions the R_AA values for both particles are consistent with binary scaling. Cu+Cu collisions show the same yield and suppression as Au+Au collisions for the same number of N_part. The R_dA of phi shows no evidence for cold nuclear effects within uncertainties.

Analytic Solution of the Pion-Laser Model

Brooding over bosons, wave packets and Bose - Einstein correlations, we find that a generalization of the pion-laser model for the case of overlapping wave-packets is analytically solvable with complete n-particle symmetrization. The effective radius parameter of the two-particle correlation function is reduced for low values and enlargened for high values of the mean momentum in the rare gas limiting case, as compared to the case when multi-particle symmetrization effects are neglected. These results explicitly depend on the multiplicity, providing a theoretical basis for event-by-event analysis of high energy heavy ion reactions.

Bose-Einstein Correlations for Systems with Large Halo

Model-independent considerations are presented for the calculation of Bose-Einstein correlation functions and momentum distributions which describe boson-emitting systems containing a central part surrounded by a large halo. If the characteristic geometrical size of the halo is sufficiently large, the contributions of central part and the halo to the invariant momentum distribution are shown to be separable. The momentum-dependence of the intercept parameter of the correlation function plays a central role. Almost all high energy reactions including lepton-lepton, lepton hadron, hadron-hadron and nuclear reactions are shown to be interpretable as boson emitting systems with large halo. The results are applied to certain high energy heavy ion data at CERN SPS. New insights are obtained for the description of low transverse momentum enhancement of pions.

Particle Spectra from the ALCOR Model

We introduce the Transchemistry Model as a dynamical extension of the Algebraic Coalescence Rehadronization (ALCOR) model in describing the hadronization of quark matter which is expected to be produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions. Results are presented for CERN SPS NA49 Pb+Pb experiment calculating hadron multiplicities and momentum spectra. The freeze-out properties of different hadrons are characterized by similar temperature, density and flow profiles in cylindrically symmetric geometry.

Quantum Statistical Correlations for Slowly Expanding Systems

Quantum statistical correlations and momentum distributions are calculated for a spherically symmetric, three-dimensionally expanding finite fireballs, for non-relativistic expansions applying plane-wave approximation. The new concepts of the geometrical temperature as well as the thermal radius are presented for the simplest case. The symmetry properties of the correlation function are shown to reflect the symmetry properties of the emission function.
