Gel'fand-Zetlin basis for a class of representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(\infty|\infty)

A new, so called odd Gel'fand-Zetlin basis is introduced for the irreducible covariant tensor representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(n|n). The related Gel'fand-Zetlin patterns are based upon the decomposition according to a particular chain of subalgebras of gl(n|n). This chain contains only genuine Lie superalgebras of type gl(k|l) with k and l nonzero (apart from the final element of the chain which is gl(1|0)=gl(1)). Explicit expressions for a set of generators of the algebra on this Gel'fand-Zetlin basis are determined. The results are extended to an explicit construction of a class of irreducible highest weight modules of the general linear Lie superalgebra gl(\infty|\infty).

A class of infinite-dimensional representations of the Lie superalgebra osp(2m+1|2n) and the parastatistics Fock space

An orthogonal basis of weight vectors for a class of infinite-dimensional representations of the orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra osp(2m+1|2n) is introduced. These representations are particular lowest weight representations V(p), with a lowest weight of the form [-p/2,...,-p/2|p/2,...,p/2], p being a positive integer. Explicit expressions for the transformation of the basis under the action of algebra generators are found. Since the relations of algebra generators correspond to the defining relations of m pairs of parafermion operators and n pairs of paraboson operators with relative parafermion relations, the parastatistics Fock space of order p is also explicitly constructed. Furthermore, the representations V(p) are shown to have interesting characters in terms of supersymmetric Schur functions, and a simple character formula is also obtained.

The $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ Krawtchouk oscillator model under the ${\cal C}{\cal P}$ deformed symmetry

We define a new algebra, which can formally be considered as a ${\cal C}{\cal P}$ deformed $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ Lie algebra. Then, we present a one-dimensional quantum oscillator model, of which the wavefunctions of even and odd states are expressed by Krawtchouk polynomials with fixed $p=1/2$, $K_{2n}(k;1/2,2j)$ and $K_{2n}(k-1;1/2,2j-2)$. The dynamical symmetry of the model is the newly introduced $\mathfrak{su}(2)_{{\cal C}{\cal P}}$ algebra. The model itself gives rise to a finite and discrete spectrum for all physical operators (such as position and momentum). Among the set of finite oscillator models it is unique in the sense that any specific limit reducing it to a known oscillator models does not exist.

On a pair of difference equations for the $_4F_3$ type orthogonal polynomials and related exactly-solvable quantum systems

We introduce a pair of novel difference equations, whose solutions are expressed in terms of Racah or Wilson polynomials depending on the nature of the finite-difference step. A number of special cases and limit relations are also examined, which allow to introduce similar difference equations for the orthogonal polynomials of the $ _3 F_2$ and $ _2 F_1$ types. It is shown that the introduced equations allow to construct new models of exactly-solvable quantum dynamical systems, such as spin chains with a nearest-neighbour interaction and fermionic quantum oscillator models.

The oscillator model for the Lie superalgebra sh(2|2) and Charlier polynomials

We investigate an algebraic model for the quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sh(2|2), known as the Heisenberg-Weyl superalgebra or "the algebra of supersymmetric quantum mechanics", and its Fock representation. The model offers some freedom in the choice of a position and a momentum operator, leading to a free model parameter gamma. Using the technique of Jacobi matrices, we determine the spectrum of the position operator, and show that its wavefunctions are related to Charlier polynomials C_n with parameter gamma^2. Some properties of these wavefunctions are discussed, as well as some other properties of the current oscillator model.

A finite oscillator model related to sl(2|1)

We investigate a new model for the finite one-dimensional quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). In this setting, it is natural to present the position and momentum operators of the oscillator as odd elements of the Lie superalgebra. The model involves a parameter p (0<p<1) and an integer representation label j. In the (2j+1)-dimensional representations W_j of sl(2|1), the Hamiltonian has the usual equidistant spectrum. The spectrum of the position operator is discrete and turns out to be of the form $\pm\sqrt{k}$, where k=0,1,...,j. We construct the discrete position wave functions, which are given in terms of certain Krawtchouk polynomials. These wave functions have appealing properties, as can already be seen from their plots. The model is sufficiently simple, in the sense that the corresponding discrete Fourier transform (relating position wave functions to momentum wave functions) can be constructed explicitly.

Discrete series representations for sl(2|1), Meixner polynomials and oscillator models

We explore a model for the one-dimensional quantum oscillator based upon the Lie superalgebra sl(2|1). For this purpose, a class of discrete series representations of sl(2|1) is constructed, each representation characterized by a real number beta>0. In this model, the position and momentum operators of the oscillator are odd elements of sl(2|1) and their expressions involve an arbitrary parameter gamma. In each representation, the spectrum of the Hamiltonian is the same as that of the canonical oscillator. The spectrum of the momentum operator can be continuous or infinite discrete, depending on the value of gamma. We determine the position wavefunctions both in the continuous and discrete case, and discuss their properties. In the discrete case, these wavefunctions are given in terms of Meixner polynomials. From the embedding osp(1|2)\subset sl(2|1), it can be seen why the case gamma=1 corresponds to the paraboson oscillator. Consequently, taking the values (beta,gamma)=(1/2,1) in the sl(2|1) model yields the canonical oscillator.

Finite oscillator models: the Hahn oscillator

A new model for the finite one-dimensional harmonic oscillator is proposed based upon the algebra u(2)_α. This algebra is a deformation of the Lie algebra u(2) extended by a parity operator, with deformation parameter α. A class of irreducible unitary representations of u(2)_α is constructed. In the finite oscillator model, the (discrete) spectrum of the position operator is determined, and the position wave functions are shown to be dual Hahn polynomials. Plots of these discrete wave functions display interesting properties, similar to those of the parabose oscillator. We show indeed that in the limit, when the dimension of the representations goes to infinity, the discrete wave functions tend to the continuous wave functions of the parabose oscillator.

The su(2)_α Hahn oscillator and a discrete Hahn-Fourier transform

We define the quadratic algebra su(2)_α which is a one-parameter deformation of the Lie algebra su(2) extended by a parity operator. The odd-dimensional representations of su(2) (with representation label j, a positive integer) can be extended to representations of su(2)_α. We investigate a model of the finite one-dimensional harmonic oscillator based upon this algebra su(2)_α. It turns out that in this model the spectrum of the position and momentum operator can be computed explicitly, and that the corresponding (discrete) wavefunctions can be determined in terms of Hahn polynomials. The operation mapping position wavefunctions into momentum wavefunctions is studied, and this so-called discrete Hahn-Fourier transform is computed explicitly. The matrix of this discrete Hahn-Fourier transform has many interesting properties, similar to those of the traditional discrete Fourier transform.

Gel'fand-Zetlin Basis and Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients for Covariant Representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n)

A Gel'fand-Zetlin basis is introduced for the irreducible covariant tensor representations of the Lie superalgebra gl(m|n). Explicit expressions for the generators of the Lie superalgebra acting on this basis are determined. Furthermore, Clebsch-Gordan coefficients corresponding to the tensor product of any covariant tensor representation of gl(m|n) with the natural representation V ([1,0,...,0]) of gl(m|n) with highest weight (1,0,. . . ,0) are computed. Both results are steps for the explicit construction of the parastatistics Fock space.

Quantum state transfer in spin chains with q-deformed interaction terms

We study the time evolution of a single spin excitation state in certain linear spin chains, as a model for quantum communication. Some years ago it was discovered that when the spin chain data (the nearest neighbour interaction strengths and the magnetic field strengths) are related to the Jacobi matrix entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials, so-called perfect state transfer takes place. The extension of these ideas to other types of discrete orthogonal polynomials did not lead to new models with perfect state transfer, but did allow more insight in the general computation of the correlation function. In the present paper, we extend the study to discrete orthogonal polynomials of q-hypergeometric type. A remarkable result is a new analytic model where perfect state transfer is achieved: this is when the spin chain data are related to the Jacobi matrix of q-Krawtchouk polynomials. The other cases studied here (affine q-Krawtchouk polynomials, quantum q-Krawtchouk polynomials, dual q-Krawtchouk polynomials, q-Hahn polynomials, dual q-Hahn polynomials and q-Racah polynomials) do not give rise to models with perfect state transfer. However, the computation of the correlation function itself is quite interesting, leading to advanced q-series manipulations.

The Hamiltonian H=xp and classification of osp(1|2) representations

The quantization of the simple one-dimensional Hamiltonian H=xp is of interest for its mathematical properties rather than for its physical relevance. In fact, the Berry-Keating conjecture speculates that a proper quantization of H=xp could yield a relation with the Riemann hypothesis. Motivated by this, we study the so-called Wigner quantization of H=xp, which relates the problem to representations of the Lie superalgebra osp(1|2). In order to know how the relevant operators act in representation spaces of osp(1|2), we study all unitary, irreducible star representations of this Lie superalgebra. Such a classification has already been made by J.W.B. Hughes, but we reexamine this classification using elementary arguments.

Transition to sub-Planck structures through the superposition of q-oscillator stationary states

We investigate the superposition of four different quantum states based on the $q$-oscillator. These quantum states are expressed by means of Rogers-Szegö polynomials. We show that such a superposition has the properties of the quantum harmonic oscillator when $q\to 1$, and those of a compass state with the appearance of chessboard-type interference patterns when $q \to 0$.

Quantum communication through a spin chain with interaction determined by a Jacobi matrix

We obtain the time-dependent correlation function describing the evolution of a single spin excitation state in a linear spin chain with isotropic nearest-neighbour XY coupling, where the Hamiltonian is related to the Jacobi matrix of a set of orthogonal polynomials. For the Krawtchouk polynomial case an arbitrary element of the correlation function is expressed in a simple closed form. Its asymptotic limit corresponds to the Jacobi matrix of the Charlier polynomial, and may be understood as a unitary evolution resulting from a Heisenberg group element. Correlation functions for Hamiltonians corresponding to Jacobi matrices for the Hahn, dual Hahn and Racah polynomials are also studied. For the Hahn polynomials we obtain the general correlation function, some of its special cases, and the limit related to the Meixner polynomials, where the su(1,1) algebra describes the underlying symmetry. For the cases of dual Hahn and Racah polynomials the general expressions of the correlation functions contain summations which are not of hypergeometric type. Simplifications, however, occur in special cases.

Solutions of the compatibility conditions for a Wigner quantum oscillator

We consider the compatibility conditions for a N-particle D-dimensional Wigner quantum oscillator. These conditions can be rewritten as certain triple relations involving anticommutators, so it is natural to look for solutions in terms of Lie superalgebras. In the recent classification of ``generalized quantum statistics'' for the basic classical Lie superalgebras [math-ph/0504013], each such statistics is characterized by a set of creation and annihilation operators plus a set of triple relations. In the present letter, we investigate which cases of this classification also lead to solutions of the compatibility conditions. Our analysis yields some known solutions and several classes of new solutions.

Jacobson generators of the quantum superalgebra $U_q[sl(n+1|m)]$ and Fock representations

As an alternative to Chevalley generators, we introduce Jacobson generators for the quantum superalgebra $U_q[sl(n+1|m)]$. The expressions of all Cartan-Weyl elements of $U_q[sl(n+1|m)]$ in terms of these Jacobson generators become very simple. We determine and prove certain triple relations between the Jacobson generators, necessary for a complete set of supercommutation relations between the Cartan-Weyl elements. Fock representations are defined, and a substantial part of this paper is devoted to the computation of the action of Jacobson generators on basis vectors of these Fock spaces. It is also determined when these Fock representations are unitary. Finally, Dyson and Holstein-Primakoff realizations are given, not only for the Jacobson generators, but for all Cartan-Weyl elements of $U_q[sl(n+1|m)]$.

Jacobson generators, Fock representations and statistics of sl(n+1)

The properties of A-statistics, related to the class of simple Lie algebras sl(n+1) (Palev, T.D.: Preprint JINR E17-10550 (1977); hep-th/9705032), are further investigated. The description of each sl(n+1) is carried out via generators and their relations, first introduced by Jacobson. The related Fock spaces W_p (p=1,2,...) are finite-dimensional irreducible sl(n+1)-modules. The Pauli principle of the underlying statistics is formulated. In addition the paper contains the following new results: (a) The A-statistics are interpreted as exclusion statistics; (b) Within each W_p operators B(p)_1^\pm, ..., B(p)_n^\pm, proportional to the Jacobson generators, are introduced. It is proved that in an appropriate topology the limit of B(p)_i^\pm for p going to infinity is equal to B_i^\pm, where B_i^\pm are Bose creation and annihilation operators; (c) It is shown that the local statistics of the degenerated hard-core Bose models and of the related Heisenberg spin models is p=1 A-statistics.

Realizations of $su(1,1)$ and $U_q(su(1,1))$ and generating functions for orthogonal polynomials

Positive discrete series representations of the Lie algebra $su(1,1)$ and the quantum algebra $U_q(su(1,1))$ are considered. The diagonalization of a self-adjoint operator (the Hamiltonian) in these representations and in tensor products of such representations is determined, and the generalized eigenvectors are constructed in terms of orthogonal polynomials. Using simple realizations of $su(1,1)$, $U_q(su(1,1))$, and their representations, these generalized eigenvectors are shown to coincide with generating functions for orthogonal polynomials. The relations valid in the tensor product representations then give rise to new generating functions for orthogonal polynomials, or to Poisson kernels. In particular, a group theoretical derivation of the Poisson kernel for Meixner-Pollaczak and Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials is obtained.
