Self-energies on deformed spacetimes

We study one-loop photon (Pi) and neutrino (Sigma) self-energies in a U(1) covariant gauge-theory on d-dimensional noncommutative spaces determined by a antisymmetric-constant tensor theta^{mu nu}. For the general fermion-photon (S_f) and photon self-interaction (S_g) the closed form results reveal self-energies besetting with all kind of pathological terms: the UV divergence, the quadratic UV/IR mixing terms as well as a logarithmic IR divergent term of the type ln(mu^2(theta p)^2). In addition, the photon-loop produces new tensor structures satisfying transversality condition by themselves. We show that the photon self-energy in four-dimensional Euclidean spacetime can be reduced to two finite terms by imposing a specific full rank of theta^{mu nu} and setting deformation parameters (kappa_f,kappa_g)=(0,3). In this case the neutrino two-point function vanishes. Thus for a specific point (0,3) in the parameter-space (kappa_f,kappa_g), a covariant theta-exact approach is able to produce a divergence-free result for one-loop quantum corrections, having also well-defined both the commutative limit as well as the pointlike limit of an extended object. While in two-dimensional space the photon self-energy is finite for arbitrary (kappa_f,kappa_g) combinations, the neutrino self-energy still contains an superficial IR divergence.

A bound on the scale of spacetime noncommutativity from the reheating phase after inflation

In an approach to noncommutative gauge theories, where the full noncommutative behavior is delimited by the presence of the UV and IR cutoffs, we consider the possibility of describing a system at a temperature T in a box of size L. Employing a specific form of UV/IR relationship inherent in such an approach of restrictive noncommutativity, we derive, for a given temperature T, an upper bound on the parameter of spacetime noncommutativity Lambda_NC ~ |theta|^{-1/2}. Considering such epochs in the very early universe which are expected to reflect spacetime noncommutativity to a quite degree, like the reheating stage after inflation, or believable pre-inflation radiation-dominated epochs, the best limits on Lambda_NC are obtained. We also demonstrate how the nature and size of the thermal system (for instance, the Hubble distance versus the future event horizon) can affect our bounds.

Neutrino propagation in noncommutative spacetimes

One-loop theta-exact quantum corrections to the neutrino propagator are computed in noncommutative U*(1) gauge-theory based on Seiberg-Witten maps. Our closed form results show that the one-loop correction contains a hard 1/epsilon UV divergence, as well as a logarithmic IR-divergent term of the type ln sqrt(theta p)^2, thus considerably softening the usual UV/IR mixing phenomenon. We show that both of these problematic terms vanish for a certain choice of the noncommutative parameter theta which preserves unitarity. We find non-perturbative modifications of the neutrino dispersion relations which are assymptotically independent of the scale of noncommutativity in both the low and high energy limits and may allow superluminal propagation. Finally, we demonstrate how the prodigious freedom in Seiberg-Witten maps may be used to affect neutrino propagation in a profound way.

Chiral fermions in noncommutative electrodynamics: renormalizability and dispersion

We analyze quantization of noncommutative chiral electrodynamics in the enveloping algebra formalism in linear order in noncommutativity parameter $θ$. Calculations show that divergences exist and cannot be removed by ordinary renormalization, however they can be removed by the Seiberg-Witten redefinition of fields. Performing the redefinitions explicitly, we obtain renormalizable lagrangian and discuss the influence of noncommutativity on field propagation. Noncommutativity affects the propagation of chiral fermions only: half of the fermionic modes become massive and birefringent.

On UV/IR mixing in noncommutative gauge field theories

In formulating gauge field theories on noncommutative (NC) spaces it is suggested that particles carrying gauge invariant quantities should not be viewed as pointlike, but rather as extended objects whose sizes grow linearly with their momenta. This and other generic properties deriving from the nonlocal character of interactions (showing thus unambiguously their quantum-gravity origin) lead to a specific form of UV/IR mixing as well as to a pathological behavior at the quantum level when the noncommutativity parameter theta is set to be arbitrarily small. In spite of previous suggestions that in a NC gauge theory based on the theta-expanded Seiberg-Witten (SW) maps UV/IR mixing effects may be under control, a fairly recent study of photon self-energy within a SW theta-exact approach has shown that UV/IR mixing is still present. We study the self-energy contribution for neutral fermions in the theta-exact approach of NC QED, and show by explicit calculation that all but one divergence can be eliminated for a generic choice of the noncommutativity parameter theta. The remaining divergence is linked to the pointlike limit of an extended object.

Photon-neutrino interaction in theta-exact covariant noncommutative field theory

Photon-neutrino interactions arise quite naturally in noncommutative field theories. Such couplings are absent in ordinary field theory and imply experimental lower bounds on the energy scale Lambda_NC ~ 1/|theta|^2 of noncommutativity. Using non-perturbative methods and a Seiberg-Witten map based covariant approach to noncommutative gauge theory, we obtain theta-exact expressions for the interactions, thereby eliminating previous restrictions to low-energy phenomena. We discuss implications for plasmon decay, neutrino charge radii, big bang nucleosynthesis and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. Our results behave reasonably throughout all interaction energy scales, thus facilitating further phenomenological applications.

Scalar field propagation in the phi^4 kappa-Minkowski model

In this article we use the noncommutative (NC) kappa-Minkowski phi^4 model based on the kappa-deformed star product, ({*}_h). The action is modified by expanding up to linear order in the kappa-deformation parameter a, producing an effective model on commutative spacetime. For the computation of the tadpole diagram contributions to the scalar field propagation/self-energy, we anticipate that statistics on the kappa-Minkowski is specifically kappa-deformed. Thus our prescription in fact represents hybrid approach between standard quantum field theory (QFT) and NCQFT on the kappa-deformed Minkowski spacetime, resulting in a kappa-effective model. The propagation is analyzed in the framework of the two-point Green's function for low, intermediate, and for the Planckian propagation energies, respectively. Semiclassical/hybrid behavior of the first order quantum correction do show up due to the kappa-deformed momentum conservation law. For low energies, the dependence of the tadpole contribution on the deformation parameter a drops out completely, while for Planckian energies, it tends to a fixed finite value. The mass term of the scalar field is shifted and these shifts are very different at different propagation energies. At the Planckian energies we obtain the direction dependent kappa-modified dispersion relations. Thus our kappa-effective model for the massive scalar field shows a birefringence effect.

Spacetime noncommutativity and ultra-high energy cosmic ray experiments

If new physics were capable to push the neutrino-nucleon inelastic cross section three orders of magnitude beyond the standard-model (SM) prediction, then ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos would have already been observed at neutrino observatories. We use such a constraint to reveal information on the scale of noncommutativity (NC) Lambda_NC in noncommutative gauge field theories (NCGFT) where neutrinos possess a tree-level coupling to photons in a generation-independent manner. In the energy range of interest (10^10 to 10^11 GeV) the theta-expansion (|theta| ~ 1/Lambda_NC^2) and therefore the perturbative expansion in terms of Lambda_NC retains no longer its meaningful character, forcing us to resort to those NC field-theoretical frameworks involving the full theta-resummation. Our numerical analysis of the contribution to the process coming from the photon exchange, pins impeccably down a lower bound on Lambda_NC to be as high as around up to 900 (450) TeV, depending on the estimates for the cosmogenic neutrino flux. If, on the other hand, one considers a surprising recent result occurred in Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) data, that UHE cosmic rays are mainly composed of highly-ionized Fe nuclei, then our bounds get weaker, due to the diminished cosmic neutrino flux. Nevertheless, we show that even for the very high fraction of heavy nuclei in primary UHE cosmic rays, our method may still yield remarkable bounds on Lambda_NC, typically always above 200 TeV. Albeit, in this case one encounters a maximal value for the Fe fraction from which any useful information on Lambda_NC can be drawn, delimiting thus the applicability of our method.

CP violation and the 4th generation

Within the Standard model with the 4th generation quarks b' and t' we have analyzed CP-violating flavor changing neutral current processes t -> cX; b'-> sX, b'-> bX,t'-> cX, and t'-> tX, with X=Z,H,gamma,g, by constructing and employing global, unique fit for the 4th generation mass mixing matrix CKM4 at 300 < m_t' < 700 GeV. All quantities appearing in the CKM4 were subject to our fitting procedure. We have found that our fit produces the following CP partial rate asymmetry dominance: a_CP(b'-> s(Z,H,gamma,g))= (90,73,52,30)%, at m_t' ~ 300,300,380,400 GeV, respectively. From the experimental point of view the best decay mode, out of the above four, is certainly b'-> s gamma, because of the presence of a clean high energy single final state photon. We have also obtained relatively large a_CP(t -> c g) ~ 15 (10)% for t' running in the loops with the mass m_t'= 650(500) GeV. There are fair chances that the 4th generation quarks will be discovered at Tevatron or LHC and that some of their decay rates shall be measured. If b' and t' exist at energies we assumed, with well executed tagging, large a_CP could be found too.

Noncommutative fermions and quarkonia decays

The recent introduction of a deformed non-minimal version of the noncommutative Standard Model in the enveloping-algebra approach, having a one-loop renormalisable gauge sector involving a higher order gauge term, motivates us to consider the possibility of extending the fermion sector with additional deformations, i.e. higher order fermionic terms. Since the renormalisability properties of the fermion sector of the model are not yet fully known, we work with an effective fermion lagrangian which includes noncommutative higher order terms involving a contraction with the noncommutative $θ$ tensor aside from the star products, so that these terms annihilate in the commutative limit. Some of these terms violate CPT in the weak sector, and some violate CP in the strong and hypercharge sectors. We apply this framework to the reevaluation of the decay rates of quarkonia (\bar{q}q_{1} = J/ψ, Υ) into two photons. These decays, which are forbidden in the ordinary Standard Model, had been previously studied as possible signals for noncommutativity, but not in the framework of the better behaved deformed non-minimal version of the noncommutative Standard Model. Weak CPT or strong-hypercharge CP violating interactions do not contribute to the result. If the parameters of the model take natural values, for the vast majority of configurations the resulting branching ratios are enhanced with respect to their values in the minimal version of the noncommutative Standard Model. Also for more than half of the parameter space, the rates are larger than the maximal rates that were calculated in the undeformed version of the non-minimal noncommutative Standard Model. Tuning the dimensionless parameters the predicted branching ratios can fall within the current experimental bounds.
