Nanoscale characterization of thin immersion silver coatings on copper substrates

Microelectronic-grade copper foils were immersion silver plated in a home-made non-cyanide alkaline silver nitrate - thiosulfate solution and in two commercially available industrial baths via contact reductive precipitation. The concentration depth profiles of the freshly deposited silver layers were afterwards analyzed at nanoscale resolution by means of Secondary Neutral Mass Spectrometry (SNMS) and Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectroscopy (GDOES). The thickness of deposited silver layers obtained with 30-60 s immersion time were in the range of 50-150 nm, depending on the parameters of the immersion procedure. Slight contamination of sulfur from the thiosulfate bath was detectable. Traces of Cr and Na could be observed as well around the interface between the copper substrate and silver deposit. Results also indicate that storage for longer time in air especially at higher than ambient temperatures induces a kind of ageing effect in the deposited layer, changing its composition. In case of samples prepared from home-made solution increasing amounts of copper together with its corrosion products became detectable.

Automatic Detection of Asteroids and Meteoroids - A Wide Field Survey

We propose a low-cost robotic optical survey aimed at $1-300$ m Near Earth Objects (NEO) based on four state-of-the-art telescopes having extremely wide field of view. The small Near-Earth Asteroids (NEA) represent a potential risk but also easily accessible space resources for future robotic or human space in-situ exploration, or commercial activities. The survey system will be optimized for the detection of fast moving - trailed - asteroids, space debris and will provide real-time alert notifications. The expected cost of the system including 1-year development and 2-year operation is 1,000,000 EUR. The successful demonstration of the system will promote cost-efficient ADAM-WFS (Automatic Detection of Asteroids and Meteoroids - A Wide Field Survey) systems to be built around the world.

Confirmation and characterization of IAU temporary meteor showers in EDMOND database

The European viDeo MeteOr Network Database (EDMOND) is a database of video meteor orbits resulting from cooperation and data sharing among several European national networks and the International Meteor Organization Video Meteor Network, IMO VMN. At present, the 4th version of the EDMOND database, which contains 83 369 video meteor orbits, has been released. The first results of the database analysis, in which we studied minor streams, are presented. Using the radiant-geocentric velocity method we identified 267 meteor showers, among them 67 established showers and 200 from the working list of the IAU MDC. Making a more detailed examination, we clearly identified 22 showers of 65 pro tempore showers of the working list of the IAU MDC (updated in August 2013). The identification of 18 meteor showers was questionable, while 25 showers were not found. For all the identified temporary meteor showers, we list the weighted mean orbital elements, the radiant position and the geocentric velocity.

Independent identification of meteor showers in EDMOND database

Cooperation and data sharing among national networks and International Meteor Organization Video Meteor Database (IMO VMDB) resulted in European viDeo MeteOr Network Database (EDMOND). The current version of the database (EDMOND 5.0) contains 144 751 orbits collected from 2001 to 2014. In our survey we used EDMOND database in order to identify existing and new meteor showers in the database. In the first step of the survey, using Dsh criterion we found groups around each meteor within similarity threshold. Mean parameters of the groups were calculated and compared using a new function based on geocentric parameters (solar longitude, right ascension, declination, and geocentric velocity). Similar groups were merged into final clusters (representing meteor showers), and compared with IAU Meteor Data Center list of meteor showers. This paper presents the results obtained by the proposed methodology.

Quadratic First Integrals of Kinetic Differential Equations

Classes of kinetic differential equations are delineated which do have a quadratic first integral, and classes which can not have one. Example reactions corresponding to the obtained kinetic differential equations are shown, and a few figures showing the trajectories of the corresponding systems are also included. Connections to other areas are mentioned and unsolved problems collected. The new results are theoretical, although computational tools are heavily used. Applications from biology and combustion theory will come later.

Structural Analysis of Combustion Mechanisms

39 detailed mechanisms for combustion of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and methanol are investigated using ReactionKinetics, a Mathematica based package. The obtained results in most cases do not depend on the choice of reaction rate coefficients, the methods only use the underlying sets of reaction steps, thus the results are robust and general in a certain sense. These investigations can be used before or in parallel with usual numerical investigations, such as pathway analysis, sensitivity analysis, parameter estimation or simulation. The considered hydrogen mechanisms shared 90% of common reaction steps. The CO combustion mechanisms show a larger variety both in species and in reaction steps. There exist only a few methanol combustion mechanisms; the big differences between them shows that the modelling community is only at the very beginning of exploring this process. The package and the methods may be useful for automatic mechanism generations, testing, comparing and reduction of mechanisms as well, especially in the case of large systems.

Microscopic Reversibility or Detailed Balance in Ion Channel Models

Mass action type deterministic kinetic models of ion channels are usually constructed in such a way as to obey the principle of detailed balance (or, microscopic reversibility) for two reasons: first, the authors aspire to have models harmonizing with thermodynamics, second, the conditions to ensure detailed balance reduce the number of reaction rate coefficients to be measured. We investigate a series of ion channel models which are asserted to obey detailed balance, however, these models violate mass conservation and in their case only the necessary conditions (the so-called circuit conditions) are taken into account. We show that ion channel models have a very specific structure which makes the consequences true in spite of the imprecise arguments. First, we transform the models into mass conserving ones, second, we show that the full set of conditions ensuring detailed balance (formulated by Feinberg) leads to the same relations for the reaction rate constants in these special cases, both for the original models and the transformed ones.
