A naive procedure for computing angular spheroidal functions

An algorithm for computing eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the angular spheroidal wave equation, based on a known but scarcely used method, is developed. By requiring the regularity of the wave function, represented by its series expansion, the eigenvalues appear as the zeros of a one variable function easily computable. The iterative extended Newton method is suggested as especially suitable for determining those zeros. The computation of the eigenfunctions is then immediate. The usefulness of the method, applicable also in the case of complex values of the "prolateness" parameter, is illustrated by comparing its results with those of procedures used by other authors.

Global solution of the cubic oscillator

The eigenstates of a real or complex cubic anharmonic oscillator are investigated using original and alternative methods. The procedure consists of determining global solutions of the Schrödinger equation that comply with the pertinent boundary conditions and allows us to obtain, in a very simple way, the eigenenergies and eigenfunctions of the Hamiltonian. Scattering by a real cubic potential is investigated as a specific case.

An algebraically solvable PT-symmetric potential with broken symmetry

The spectrum of a one-dimensional Hamiltonian with potential $V(x)=ix^2$ for negative $x$ and $V(x)=-ix^2$ for positive $x$ is analyzed. The Schrödinger equation is algebraically solvable and the eigenvalues are obtained as the zeros of an expression explicitly given in terms of Gamma functions. The spectrum consists of one real eigenvalue and an infinite set of pairs of complex conjugate eigenvalues.

Exact solution of the Schrödinger equation with a Lennard-Jones potential

The Schrödinger equation with a Lennard-Jones potential is solved by using a procedure that treats in a rigorous way the irregular singularities at the origin and at infinity. Global solutions are obtained thanks to the computation of the connection factors between Floquet and Thomé solutions. The energies of the bound states result as zeros of a function defined by a convergent series whose successive terms are calculated by means of recurrence relations. The procedure gives also the wave functions expressed either as a linear combination of two Laurent expansions, at moderate distances, or as an asymptotic expansion, near the singular points. A table of the critical intensities of the potential, for which a new bound state (of zero energy) appears, is also given.

Scattering length for Lennard-Jones potentials

We present an exact procedure that allows one to calculate the scattering lenth for any potential expressed as an algebraic sum of inverse powers of the interatomic distance. We apply it to (12, $s$) Lennard-Jones potentials, with different values of $s$. The procedure is suitable for a very precise determination of the intensities of the potential corresponding to zeros or poles of the scattering length.
