$C_T$ for monodromy defects of fields on odd dimensional spheres for higher derivative propagation

The central charge $C_T$ is computed for scalar and Dirac fields propagating according to GJMS-type kinetic operators acting on odd $d$-dimensional spheres in the presence of a spherical monodromy. The relation of $C_T$ to the derivatives of the free energy on the conically deformed sphere via the Perlmutter factor leads to a numerical quadrature. The variation of $C_T$ with the monodromy flux, $δ$, displays sign changes, exactly as in even dimensions. Closed forms for $C_T$ are derived when $δ$ equals 0 or 1/2 with the derivative order either even or odd and shown to agree with existing, even $d$ expressions. The infinite $d$ limits are also derived in these special cases.

Entanglement entropy and $C_T$ for monodromy defects of fields on odd-dimensional spheres

The effect of a spherical monodromy defect on the entanglement entropy and central charge $C_T$ of a free conformal scalar field propagating on an odd-dimensional sphere is investigated. As on even spheres the central charge becomes negative for a range of the flux parameter, $δ$, with possible implications for reflection positivity. The work is mostly numerical but closed forms are found for the $Z_2$ monodromy ($δ=1/2$) yielding an explicit $d\to\infty$ limit, $C_T\to -6/π$

Further on the Aharonov-Bohm Green function: the coincidence limit

For a scalar CFT with a monodromy defect, a `subtracted Green function' is derived in terms of an Appell $F_1$ function. A conjectured relation of Gimenez-Grau and Liendo is thereby proved and extended and shown to hold for generalised free fields. A possible means of determining the bulk block expansion is outlined. Finite coincidence limits are expressed as combinations of Beta functions.

On the bulk block expansion for a monodromy defect

For a free--field flat monodromy defect, a formula for the finite part of the correlator is obtained as a double power series in $(1-x)$ and $(1-\ol x)$ where $x$ and $\ol x$ are lightcone coordinates. It takes the particular form of a series in $(1-x)$ with coefficients finite sums of hypergeometric functions of $1-\ol x$ and is identified with a bulk block expansion. A simple expression for the coefficient of the $(1-x)^n(1-\ol x)^m$ term is thereby found as an explicit function of the flux and dimension. Some typical examples are presented.A transformation allows the bulk block expansion to be written as an Appell $F_3$ function which has simplifying consequences.

preprint2022arXiv

On the Green function for an Aharonov-Bohm flux tube

An earlier contour expression for the Green function of a free complex scalar field in the presence of a conical singularity with localised magnetic flux is shown to yield expressions for the field correlator and defect block expansions that have been more recently found in connection with monodromy defects in conformal field theory. The Green function appears as the Picard integral representation of the Appell $F_1$ function. This is shown to transform into a confluent Horn function, corresponding to a different defect block expansion. Other transformations are discussed.

Renyi entropy for monodromy defects of higher derivative free fields on even-dimensional spheres

Explicit polynomial forms for Rényi and entanglement entropies are given on even --dimensional spheres which possess a codimension--2 U(1) monodromy defect. Free scalar and Dirac fields are treated and higher-derivative propagation operators employed. The central charge, $C_T$, is also calculated. Comparison with existing results is made and it is shown how these can be obtained from the values here.

Renyi entropy for spherical monodromy of free scalar fields in even dimensions

The effect of a co--dimension--2 spherical monodromy defect on the free--field theory of a conformal scalar is investigated. The conformal anomaly is computed (in two ways) and thence the Rényi and entanglement entropies. The $C_T$ central charge is found to be negative for a range of monodromy flux. The calculations are pursued for any even dimensional sphere. A Possible conflict with existing results is raised.

preprint2020arXiv

Conformal anomalies for higher derivative free critical p-forms on even spheres

The conformal anomaly is computed on even $d$--spheres for a $p$--form propagating according to the Branson--Gover higher derivative, conformally covariant operators. The system is set up on a $q$--deformed sphere and the conformal anomaly is computed as a rational function of the derivative order, $2k$, and of $q$. The anomaly is shown to be an extremum at the round sphere ($q=1$) only for $k<d/2$. At these integer values, therefore, the entanglement entropy is minus the conformal anomaly, as usual. The unconstrained $p$--form conformal anomaly on the full sphere is shown to be given by an integral over the Plancherel measure for a coexact form on hyperbolic space in one dimension higher.A natural ghost sum is constructed and leads to quantities which, for critical forms, i.e. when $2k=d-2p$, are, remarkably, a simple combination of standard quantities, for usual second order, $k=1$, propagation, when these are available. Our values coincide with a recent hyperbolic computation of David and Mukherjee.Values are suggested for the Casimir energy on the Einstein cylinder from the behaviour of the conformal anomaly as $q\to0$ and compared with known results written as alternating sums over scalar values.

Charged Renyi entropies for free scalar fields

I first calculate the charged spherical Renyi entropy by a numerical method that does not require knowledge of any eigenvalue degeneracies, and applies to all odd dimensions. An image method is used to relate the full sphere values to those for an integer covering, n. It is shown to be equivalent to a `transformation' property of the zeta--function. The infinite limit is explicitly constructed analytically and a relation deduced between the limits of corner coefficients and the effective action (free energy) which generalises, for free fields, a result of Bueno, Myers and Witczak--Krempa and Elvang and Hadjiantonis to any dimension. Finally, the known polynomial expressions for the Renyi entropy on even spheres at zero chemical potential are re--derived in a different form and a simple formula for the conformal anomaly given purely in terms of central factorials is obtained.

Computation of the derivative of the Hurwitz zeta-function and the higher Kinkelin constants

I use the numerical values of the generalised Glaisher-Kinkelin-Bendersky (GKB) constants to give numerical values for the derivatives of the Hurwitz zeta function at negative integers, rather than the other way round. I point out that both Glaisher's numerical approach and Bendersky's recursion for the generalised gamma function were anticipated by Jeffery in 1862 who gave the value of the second constant as an example. I therefore propose that GKB become GKBJ.

preprint2015arXiv

Conformal weights of charged Renyi entropy twist operators for free Dirac fields in arbitrary dimensions

The conformal weights of spherical twist operators at non--zero (Euclidean) chemical potential are computed for free Dirac fields in arbitrary dimensions. An image technique, equivalent to replicas, is again used to obtain the $n$--fold cover quantities. The proof of a conjecture made by Bueno, Myers and Witczac--Krempa regarding the relation between the conformal weights and a corner coefficient in the Rényi entropy, given before for scalar fields, is extended to the fermion case. The variation of the weights with chemical potential indicates phase changes.

preprint2015arXiv

Conformal weights of charged Renyi entropy twist operators for free scalar fields

I compute the conformal weights of the twist operators of free scalar fields for charged Rényi entropy in both odd and even dimensions. Explicit expressions can be found, in odd dimensions as a function of the chemical potential in the absence of a conical singularity and thence by images for all integer coverings. This method, developed some time ago, is equivalent, in results, to the replica technique. A review is given. The same method applies for even dimensions but a general form is more immediately available. For no chemical potential, the the closed form in the covering order is written in an alternative way related to old trigonometric sums. Some derivatives are obtained. An analytical proof is given of a conjecture made by Bueno, Myers and Witczac--Krempa regarding the relation between the conformal weights and a corner coefficient (a universal quantity) in the Rényi entropy.

Effective action for conformal spins on spheres with the multiplicative and conformal anomalies

Two multiplicative anomalies are evaluated for the determinant of the conformal higher spin propagating operator on spheres given by Tseytlin. One holds for the decomposition of the higher derivative product into its individual second order factors and the other applies to its complete linear factorisation. Using this last factorisation, I also calculate the determinant explicitly in terms of the Riemann zeta function, for both even and odd dimensions. In the latter case there is no anomaly of course. The conformal anomaly is also found for arbitrary spin and dimension.

On sums of powers of cosecs

The finite sums of powers of cosecs occur in numerous situations, both physical and mathematical, examples being the Casimir effect, Renyi entropy, Verlinde's formula and Dedekind sums. I here present some further discussion which consists mainly of a reprise of early work by H.M.Jeffery in 1862-64 which has fallen by the wayside and whose results are being reproduced up to the present day. The motivation is partly historical justice and partly that, because of the continuing appearance of the sums, his particular methods deserve re--exposure. For example, simple trigonometric generating functions are found and these have a field theoretic, Green function significance and I make a few comments in the topic of Rényi entropies.

preprint2014arXiv

Evaluation of spherical GJMS determinants

An expression in the form of an easily computed integral is given for the determinant of the scalar GJMS operator on an odd--dimensional sphere. Manipulation yields a sum formula for the logdet in terms of the logdets of the ordinary conformal Laplacian for other dimensions. This is formalised and expanded by an analytical treatment of the integral which produces an explicit combinatorial expression directly in terms of the Riemann zeta function, and $\log2$. An incidental byproduct is a (known) expression for the central factorial coefficients in terms of higher Bernoulli numbers.

preprint2014arXiv

Expansion of Rényi entropy for free scalar fields

An expression for the effective action of a conformal scalar on odd spheres allows a relatively simple computation of the expansion coefficients of the Rényi entropy for any odd dimension, d. Explicit values are listed for d=3,5 and 7. The alternative method, using a mapping to a flat conical manifold, is also employed, again for any odd dimension, and some mathematical details are presented on the computation of certain integrals.

Imaginary mass lens space determinants

Functional determinants for a single scalar field with negative mass squared are evaluated on homogeneous lens spaces. For example, on even order spaces, the Hartle--Hawking wave function oscillates about its zeros with increasing amplitude as the (imaginary) mass increases. I also present results for the binary tetrahedral, octahedral and icosahedral factors of the three--sphere. The final answer is given as a quadrature and some graphs are drawn. In the technical evaluation of the infinite sums, the explicit form of the degeneracies is not needed.

preprint2014arXiv

Massive sphere determinants

An expression for the functional determinant on a sphere for a massive (scalar) field derived by Denef, Hartnoll and Sachdev using quasinormal modes is shown to exist already in the literature together with the multiplicative anomaly interpretation. The relevant expressions are outlined and several equivalent versions are given. The variation with mass is determined numerically. As an application of the derived formulae, the Hartle--Hawking probability of the Universe (via the dS/CFT correspondance) is recomputed. Agreement is found with Anninos, Denef and Harlow. The calculation is extended to all (odd) dimensions. I also compute the wave function which reveals an interesting feature.

preprint2014arXiv

Spherical Dirac GJMS operator determinants

Motivated by AdS/CFT, the extension is made to spin-half of a scalar calculation of the conformal anomalies and functional determinants of GJMS operators. The formal aspects are heuristic but sufficient. A Barnes zeta function representation again proves effective. The determinants are calculated for the two factorisations of the gamma-function (intertwiner) form of the GJMS operator, and shown to be equal, even including the multiplicative anomaly. A comment is made on the general eigenvalue problem and a few numerical results are presented. An alternative approach is detailed for odd dimensions and it is shown that the scalar determinants are expressed in terms of the spinor ones, and vice versa. An explicit, general form is given.

preprint2014arXiv

The boundary F-theorem for free fields

The boundary free energy, as defined by Gaiotto, is further analysed for free scalars on a hemisphere and shown to be the same as the N-D determinant that earlier occurred in a treatment of GJMS operators. It is also shown to be identical, up to spin degeneracy, to the free energy for a spin-half field on the hemisphere boundary. This is also true if the hemisphere is replaced by a lune. The calculations are carried out in arbitrary dimensions.

Central differences, Euler numbers and symbolic methods

I relate some coefficients encountered when computing the functional determinants on spheres to the central differentials of nothing. In doing this I use some historic works, in particular transcribing the elegant symbolic formalism of Jeffery (1861) into central difference form which has computational advantages for Euler numbers, as discovered by Shovelton (1915). I derive sum rules for these, and for the central differentials, the proof of which involves an interesting expression for powers of sech x as multiple derivatives. I present a more general, symbolic treatment of central difference calculus which allows known, and unknown, things to be obtained in an elegant and compact fashion gaining, at no cost, the expansion of the powers of the inverse sinh, a basic central function. Systematic use is made of the operator 2 asinh(D/2). Umbral calculus is employed to compress the operator formalism. For example the orthogonality/completeness of the factorial numbers, of the first and second kinds, translates, umbrally, to T(t(x))=x. The classic expansions of multiple angle cosh and sinh in terms of powers of sinh are thence obtained with minimal effort.

preprint2013arXiv

Lens space determinants

More analysis of operator determinants on homogeneous three dimensional lens spaces is presented with the emphasis on numerics so that Laplacians for massive fields can be dealt with. Polyhedral quotients are also briefly considered. Twisted fields, corresponding to flat connections, are looked at and examples of determinants computed. Twisted cyclic quantities are sufficient to determine those for any twisting on any factor. An application to the thermodynamics on sphere quotients is given. Some computations are made for inhomogeneous lens spaces and higher dimensions are commented on. Minimal coupling is also dealt with.

preprint2013arXiv

Numerical evaluation of spherical GJMS determinants for even dimensions

The functional determinants of the GJMS scalar operators, P_{2k}, on even-dimensional spheres are computed via Barnes multiple gamma functions relying on the numerical availability of the digamma function. For the critical k=d/2 case, it is necessary to calculate the Stirling moduli. The multiplicative anomalies are given as odd polynomials in $k$ and it is emphasised that that the Dirichlet--to--Robin factorisation, P_{2l+1}, gives the same results as P_{2k} if k=l+1/2.The results are presented as graphs and show a series of extrema in the effective action as k is varied in the reals. For odd dimensions these extrema occur at integer k.

On Sylvester Waves and restricted partitions

The higher Sylvester waves are discussed. Techniques used involve finite difference operators. For example, using Herschel's theorem, elegant expressions for Euler's rational functions and the Todd operator are found. Derivative expansions are also rapidly treated by the same method. A general form for the wave is obtained using multiplicative series, and comments made on its further reduction. As is known, Dedekind sums arise in the case of coprime components and it is pointed out that Brioschi had this result, but not the terminology, very early on. His proof is repeated. Adding a set of ones to the components of the denumerant corresponds to a succession of (discrete) smoothings and is a Cesaro sum. Using a spectral vocabulary, I take the opportunity to exhibit the finite difference counterparts of some continuous, distributional properties of Riesz typical means.

Poweroids revisited - an old symbolic approach

Jeffery's 1861 computations using finite difference calculus are resurrected and extended from forward differences to general delta operators and used to neatly prove theorems in the Rota--Mullins theory of polynomials of binomial type (Steffensen's poweroids) allowing, for example, compact treatments of umbral composition, the binomial property and the connection constants. It is shown that it forms a legitimate alternative to the usual umbral device and also anticipates a number of results obtained more recently.

Remarks on Lubbock's summation formulae

The coefficients occurring in summation formulae of the Lubbock type are shown to be generalised Bernoulli polynomials which turn up in subdivision questions such as quantum field theory around a conical singularity and on spherical lunes. An image interpretation is made, generating functions are brought in and some trigonometric summations encountered. A formal Lubbock formula is introduced for a general delta operator.

Discrete eigenproblems

Schrodinger eigenproblems on a discrete interval are further investigated with special attention given to test cases such as the linear and Rosen--Morse potentials. In the former case it is shown that the characteristic function determining the eigenvalues is a Lommel polynomial and considerable space is devoted to these objects. For example it is shown that the continuum limit of the determinant is obtained by a transitional limit of the Lommel polynomials for large order and argument. Numerical comparisons between discrete approximations and (known) continuum values for the ratio of functional determinants with and without the potential are made and show good agreement, even for small numbers of vertices. The zero mode problem is also briefly dealt with.

Heat-kernels on the discrete circle and interval

As is known, the free heat-kernel on the integers (a modified Bessel function) is turned into the periodic free heat-kernel on the discrete circle by factoring, giving a pre-image sum. I generalise existing treatments by making the functions periodic up to a phase, thus introducing an extra parameter into the analysis. Identifying the classical paths form with the conventional eigenfunction expression, I find a combinatorial trace identity which allows various Bessel identities to be extracted, such as a generalisation of the Jacobi-Anger expansion. The free Dirichlet, Neumann and hybrid Dirichlet-Neumann heat-kernels on a discrete interval are constructed using both modes and images. The Neumann imaging mirror has to be placed at a half-integer. The corresponding lattice Green functions are expressed in terms of Chebyshev polynomials and the Laplacian matrices extracted. The generating functions for circuits with bumps are evaluated.

preprint2011arXiv

Discrete Determinants and the Gel'fand-Yaglom formula

I present a partly pedagogic discussion of the Gel'fand-Yaglom formula for the functional determinant of a one-dimensional, second order difference operator, in the simplest settings. The formula is a textbook one in discrete Sturm-Liouville theory and orthogonal polynomials. A two by two matrix approach is developed and applied to Robin boundary conditions. Euler-Rayleigh sums of eigenvalues are computed. A delta potential is introduced as a simple, non-trivial example and extended, in an appendix, to the general case. The continuum limit is considered in a non--rigorous way and a rough comparison with zeta regularised values is made. Vacuum energies are also considered in the free case. Chebyshev polynomials act as free propagators and their properties are developed using the two-matrix formulation, which has some advantages and appears to be novel. A trace formula, rather than a determinant one, is derived for the Gel'fand-Yaglom function.

Relations between the Ehrhart polynomial, the heat kernel and Sylvester waves

I show for the specific case of the scalar field spectrum on regular tessellations of the sphere that the first two terms of the heat--kernel expansion are related to the first two terms of the Ehrhart (quasi)polynomial. In trying to make this relation precise, I consider degeneracies as partition denumerants and show the connection of the group theory expressions with Popoviciu's theorem and with the notion of Sylvester waves. General denumerants are considered and the first wave, i.e. the polynomial part, is written using the A-genus multiplicative sequence. It is pointed out that Sylvester in effect did the same thing and that he had also obtained Ehrhart reciprocity. I derive an algebraically neat form for the second wave which involves the combination of two multiplicative sequences.

preprint2011arXiv

Spherical Casimir pistons

A piston is introduced into a spherical lune Casimir cavity turning it into two adjacent lunes separated by the (hemispherical) piston. On the basis of zeta function regularisation, the vacuum energy of the arrangement is finite for conformal propagation in space-time. For even spheres this energy is independent of the angle of the lune. For odd dimensions it is shown that for all Neumann, or all Dirichlet, boundary conditions the piston is attracted or repelled by the nearest wall if d=3,7,... or if d=1,5,..., respectively. For hybrid N-D conditions these requirements are switched. If a mass is added, divergences arise which render the model suspect. The analysis, however, is relatively straightforward and involves the Barnes zeta function. The extension to finite temperatures is made and it is shown that for the 3,7,... series of odd spheres, the repulsion by the walls continues but that, above a certain temperature, the free energy acquires two minima symmetrically placed about the mid point.

preprint2010arXiv

Determinants and conformal anomalies of GJMS operators on spheres

The conformal anomalies and functional determinants of the Branson--GJMS operators, P_{2k}, on the d-dimensional sphere are evaluated in explicit terms for any d and k such that k < d/2+1 (if d is even). The determinants are given in terms of multiple gamma functions and a rational multiplicative anomaly, which vanishes for odd d. Taking the mode system on the sphere as the union of Neumann and Dirichlet ones on the hemisphere is a basic part of the method and leads to a heuristic explanation of the non--existence of `super--critical' operators, 2k>d for even d. Significant use is made of the Barnes zeta function. The results are given in terms of ratios of determinants of operators on a (d+1)-dimensional bulk dual sphere. For odd dimensions, the log determinant is written in terms of multiple sine functions and agreement is found with holographic computations, yielding an integral over a Plancherel measure. The N-D determinant ratio is also found explicitly for even dimensions. Ehrhart polynomials are encountered.

preprint2010arXiv

Entanglement entropy for even spheres

The coefficient of the logarithmic term in the entropy on even spheres is re-computed by the local technique of integrating the finite temperature energy density up to the horizon on static d--dimensional de Sitter space and thence finding the entropy by thermodynamics. Numeric evaluation yields the known answer i.e. (minus) the conformal anomaly on the d-sphere. The de Sitter quantities are obtained by conformal transformation of the Rindler ones, themselves obtained, for convenience, from those around a cosmic string. The expressions are given in terms of generalised Bernoulli polynomials for which an identity is derived. The arising spherical conformal anomaly is discussed and a formula is given for it for Branson's higher GJMS Laplacian, P_2k, as an oscillating polynomial in the level, k.

preprint2010arXiv

Hyperspherical entanglement entropy

The coefficient of the log term in the entanglement entropy associated with hyperspherical surfaces in flat space-time is shown to equal the conformal anomaly by conformally transforming Euclideanised space--time to a sphere and using already existing formulae for the relevant heat--kernel coefficients after cyclic factoring. The analytical reason for the result is that the conformal anomaly on the lune has an extremum at the ordinary sphere limit. A proof is given. Agreement with a recent evaluation of the coefficient is found.

preprint2002arXiv

Elliptic functions and temperature inversion symmetry on spheres

Finite temperature boson and fermion field theories on ultrastatic space-times with a d-sphere spatial section are discussed with one eye on the questions of temperature inversion symmetry and modular invariance. For conformally invariant theories it is shown that the total energy at any temperature for any dimension, d, is given as a power series in the d=3 and d=5 energies, for scalars, and the d=1 and d=3 energies for spinors. Further, these energies can be given in finite terms at specific temperatures associated with singular moduli of elliptic function theory. Some examples are listed and numbers given.

preprint1997arXiv

Heat-kernel coefficients for oblique boundary conditions

We calculate the heat-kernel coefficients, up to $a_2$, for a U(1) bundle on the 4-Ball for boundary conditions which are such that the normal derivative of the field at the boundary is related to a first-order operator in boundary derivatives acting on the field. The results are used to place restrictions on the general forms of the coefficients. In the specific case considered, there can be a breakdown of ellipticity.

Further functional determinants

Functional determinants for the scalar Laplacian on spherical caps and slices, flat balls, shells and generalised cylinders are evaluated in two, three and four dimensions using conformal techniques. Both Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions are allowed for. Some effects of non-smooth boundaries are discussed; in particular the 3-hemiball and the 3-hemishell are considered. The edge and vertex contributions to the $C_{3/2}$ coefficient are examined.

preprint1995arXiv

Robin conditions on the Euclidean ball

Techniques are presented for calculating directly the scalar functional determinant on the Euclidean d-ball. General formulae are given for Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. The method involves a large mass asymptotic limit which is carried out in detail for d=2 and d=4 incidentally producing some specific summations and identities. Extensive use is made of the Watson-Kober summation formula.

preprint1993arXiv

Functional determinants on regions of the plane and sphere

The standard formula for the change in the effective action under a conformal transformation is extended to the case when the boundary is piecewise smooth. We then find the functional determinants of the scalar Laplacian on regions of the plane obtained by stereographic projection of the fundamental domains on an orbifolded two-sphere. Examples treated are the sector of a disk and a circular crescent. The effective action on a spherical cap is also determined.

preprint1992arXiv

Vacuum energy on orbifold factors of spheres

The vacuum energy is calculated for a free, conformally-coupled scalar field on the orbifold space-time \R$\times §^2/Γ$ where $Γ$ is a finite subgroup of O(3) acting with fixed points. The energy vanishes when $Γ$ is composed of pure rotations but not otherwise. It is shown on general grounds that the same conclusion holds for all even-dimensional factored spheres and the vacuum energies are given as generalised Bernoulli functions (i.e. Todd polynomials). The relevant $ζ$- functions are analysed in some detail and several identities are incidentally derived. The general discussion is presented in terms of finite reflection groups.
