Impact of low-energy nuclear excitations on neutrino-nucleus scattering at MiniBooNE and T2K kinematics

[Background] Meticulous modeling of neutrino-nucleus interactions is essential to achieve the unprecedented precision goals of present and future accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments. [Purpose] Confront our calculations of charged-current quasielastic cross section with the measurements of MiniBooNE and T2K, and to quantitatively investigate the role of nuclear-structure effects, in particular, low-energy nuclear excitations in forward muon scattering. [Method] The model takes the mean-field (MF) approach as the starting point, and solves Hartree-Fock (HF) equations using a Skyrme (SkE2) nucleon-nucleon interaction. Long-range nuclear correlations are taken into account by means of the continuum random-phase approximation (CRPA) framework. [Results] We present our calculations on flux-folded double differential, and flux-unfolded total cross sections off $^{12}$C and compare them with MiniBooNE and (off-axis) T2K measurements. We discuss the importance of low-energy nuclear excitations for the forward bins. [Conclusions] The CRPA predictions describe the gross features of the measured cross sections. They underpredict the data (more in the neutrino than in the antineutrino case) because of the absence of processes beyond pure quasielastic scattering in our model. At very forward muon scattering, low-energy nuclear excitations ($ω< $ 50 MeV) account for nearly 50% of the flux-folded cross section.

Model discrimination in pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction

To learn about a physical system of interest, experimental results must be able to discriminate among models. We introduce a geometrical measure to quantify the distance between models for pseudoscalar-meson photoproduction in amplitude space. Experimental observables, with finite accuracy, map to probability distributions in amplitude space, and the characteristic width scale of such distributions needs to be smaller than the distance between models if the observable data are going to be useful. We therefore also introduce a method for evaluating probability distributions in amplitude space that arise as a result of one or more measurements, and show how one can use this to determine what further measurements are going to be necessary to be able to discriminate among models.

Extracting the Mass Dependence and Quantum Numbers of Short-Range Correlated Pairs from A(e,e'p) and A(e,e'pp) Scattering

The nuclear mass dependence of the number of short-range correlated (SRC) proton-proton (pp) and proton-neutron (pn) pairs in nuclei is a sensitive probe of the dynamics of short-range pairs in the ground state of atomic nuclei. This work presents an analysis of electroinduced single-proton and two-proton knockout measurements off 12C, 27Al, 56Fe, and 208Pb in kinematics dominated by scattering off SRC pairs. The nuclear mass dependence of the observed A(e,e'pp)/12C(e,e'pp) cross-section ratios and the extracted number of pp- and pn-SRC pairs are much softer than the mass dependence of the total number of possible pairs. This is in agreement with a physical picture of SRC affecting predominantly nucleon-nucleon pairs in a nodeless relative-S state of the mean-field basis.

Low-energy excitations and quasielastic contribution to electron-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering in the continuum random phase approximation

We present a detailed study of a continuum random phase approximation approach to quasielastic electron-nucleus and neutrino-nucleus scattering. The formalism is validated by confronting ($e,e'$) cross-section predictions with electron scattering data for the nuclear targets $^{12}$C, $^{16}$O, and $^{40}$Ca, in the kinematic region where quasielastic scattering is expected to dominate. We examine the longitudinal and transverse contributions to $^{12}$C($e,e'$) and compare them with the available data. Further, we study the $^{12}$C($ν_μ,μ^{-}$) cross sections relevant for accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments. We pay special attention to low-energy excitations which can account for non-negligible contributions in measurements, and require a beyond-Fermi-gas formalism.

Quasielastic electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering in a continuum random phase approximation approach

We present a continuum random phase approximation approach to study electron- and neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections, in the kinematic region where quasielastic scattering is the dominant process. We show the validity of the formalism by confronting inclusive ($e,e'$) cross sections with the available data. We calculate flux-folded cross sections for charged-current quasielastic antineutrino scattering off $^{12}$C and compare them with the MiniBooNE cross-section measurements. We pay special emphasis to the contribution of low-energy nuclear excitations in the signal of accelerator-based neutrino-oscillation experiments.

Measurement of the 12C(e,e'p)11B Two-Body Breakup Reaction at High Missing Momentum Values

The five-fold differential cross section for the 12C(e,e'p)11B reaction was determined over a missing momentum range of 200-400 MeV/c, in a kinematics regime with Bjorken x > 1 and Q2 = 2.0 (GeV/c)2. A comparison of the results and theoretical models and previous lower missing momentum data is shown. The theoretical calculations agree well with the data up to a missing momentum value of 325 MeV/c and then diverge for larger missing momenta. The extracted distorted momentum distribution is shown to be consistent with previous data and extends the range of available data up to 400 MeV/c.

Quasielastic contribution to antineutrino-nucleus scattering

We report on a calculation of cross sections for charged-current quasielastic antineutrino scattering off $^{12}$C in the energy range of interest for the MiniBooNE experiment. We adopt the impulse approximation (IA) and use the nonrelativistic continuum random phase approximation (CRPA) to model the nuclear dynamics. An effective nucleon-nucleon interaction of the Skyrme type is used. We compare our results with the recent MiniBooNE antineutrino cross-section data and confront them with alternate calculations. The CRPA predictions reproduce the gross features of the shape of the measured double-differential cross sections. The CRPA cross sections are typically larger than those of other reported IA calculations but tend to underestimate the magnitude of the MiniBooNE data. We observe that an enhancement of the nucleon axial mass in CRPA calculations is an effective way of improving on the description of the shape and magnitude of the double-differential cross sections. The rescaling of $M_{A}$ is illustrated to affect the shape of the double-differential cross sections differently than multinucleon effects beyond the IA.

Quasi-free (p,2p) and (p,pn) reactions with unstable nuclei

We study (p,2p) and (p,pn) reactions at proton energies in the range of 100 MeV -- 1 GeV. Our purpose is to explore the most sensitive observables in unpolarized reactions with inverse kinematics involving radioactive nuclei. We formulate a model based on the eikonal theory to describe total cross sections and momentum distributions of the recoiled residual nucleus. The model is similar to the one adopted for knockout reactions with heavy ions. We show that momentum distributions are sensitive to the angular momentum of the ejected nucleon which can be used as an spectroscopic tool. The total cross sections are sensitive to the nucleon separation energies and to multiple scattering effects. Our calculations also indicate that a beam energy around 500 MeV/nucleon has a smaller dependence on the anisotropy of the nucleon-nucleon elastic scattering.

Bayesian Model Selection for Electromagnetic Kaon Production on the Nucleon

We present the results of a Bayesian analysis of a Regge model for K+ Lambda photoproduction. The model is based on the exchange of K+(494) and K*+(892) trajectories in the t-channel. For different prior widths, we find decisive Bayesian evidence (Δln Z ~ 24) for a K+ Lambda photoproduction Regge model with a positive vector coupling and a negative tensor coupling constant for the K+(892) trajectory, and a rotating phase factor for both trajectories. Using the chi^2 minimization method, one could not draw this conclusion from the same dataset.

The Regge-plus-resonance model for kaon production on the proton and the neutron

The Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) framework for kaon photoproduction on the proton and the neutron is an economical single-channel model with very few parameters. Not only does the RPR model allow one to extract resonance information from the data, it has predictive power. As an example we show that the RPR model makes fair predictions for the $p(e,e'K^{+})Λ$ and the $n(γ,K^{+})Σ^{-}$ observables starting from amplitudes optimized for the reaction $p(γ, K ^{+})Λ$ and $p(γ,K^{+})Σ^{0}$ respectively.

Bayesian model selection for electromagnetic kaon production on the nucleon

We present the results of a Bayesian analysis of a Regge model to describe the background contribution for K+ Lambda and K+ Sigma0 photoproduction. The model is based on the exchange of K+(494) and K*+(892) trajectories in the t-channel. We utilise the Bayesian evidence Z to determine the best model variant for each channel. The Bayesian evidence integrals were calculated using the Nested Sampling algorithm. For different prior widths, we find decisive Bayesian evidence (Δln Z ~ 24) for a K+ Lambda photoproduction Regge model with a positive vector coupling and a negative tensor coupling constant for the K*+(892) trajectory, and a rotating phase factor for both trajectories. Using the chi^2 minimisation method, one could not draw this conclusion from the same dataset. For the K+ Sigma0 photoproduction Regge model, on the other hand, the difference between the evidence integrals is insufficient to pinpoint one model variant.

Measurement of $K^- p$ radiative capture to $γΛ$ and $γΣ^0$ for $p_{K^-}$ between 514 and 750 MeV/$c$

Differential cross sections for $K^-$ radiative capture in flight on the proton, leading to the $γΛ$ and $γΣ^0$ final states, have been measured at eight $K^-$ momenta between 514 and 750 MeV/$c$. The data were obtained with the Crystal Ball multiphoton spectrometer installed at the separated $K/π$ beam line C6 of the BNL Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The results substantially improve the existing experimental data available for studying radiative decays of excited hyperon states. An exploratory theoretical analysis is performed within the Regge-plus-resonance approach. According to this analysis, the $γΣ^0$ final state is dominated by hyperonresonance exchange and hints at an important role for a resonance in the mass region of 1700 MeV. In the $γΛ$ final state, on the other hand, the resonant contributions account for only half the strength, and the data suggest the importance of a resonance in the mass region of 1550 MeV.

Support of generalized parton distributions in Bethe-Salpeter models of hadrons

The proper support of generalized parton distributions from relativistic constituent quark models with pointlike constituents is studied. The correct support is guaranteed when the vertex function does not depend on the relative minus-momentum. We show that including quark interactions in models with pointlike constituent quarks might lead to a support problem. A computation of the magnitude of the support problem in the Bonn relativistic constituent quark model is presented.

Helicity asymmetries in neutrino-nucleus interactions

We investigate the helicity properties of the ejectile in quasi-elastic neutrino-induced nucleon-knockout reactions and consider the 12C target as a test case. A formalism based on a relativistic mean-field model is adopted. The influence of final-state interactions is evaluated within a relativistic multiple-scattering Glauber approximation (RMSGA) model. Our calculations reveal that the helicity asymmetries A_l in A(\overlineν,\overlineν'N) processes are extremely sensitive to strange-quark contributions to the weak vector form-factors. Thereby, nuclear corrections, such as final-state interactions and off-shell ambiguities in the electroweak current operators, are observed to be of marginal importance. This facilitates extracting strange-quark information from the helicity asymmetry A_l.

Spin-dependent neutrino-induced nucleon knockout

We study neutrino-induced nucleon knockout off atomic nuclei and examine the polarization properties of the ejectile. A detailed study of the spin dependence of the outgoing nucleon is presented. The numerical results are derived within a non-relativistic plane-wave impulse-approximation approach. Our calculations reveal large polarization asymmetries, and clear dissimilarities between neutrino- and antineutrino-induced reactions. They reflect the fact that neutrino-induced nucleon knockout is dominated by the transverse axial current and gains its major contributions from forward nucleon emission and backward lepton scattering.

Relativistic formulation of Glauber theory for A(e,e'p) reactions

At sufficiently large proton energies, Glauber multiple-scattering theory offers good opportunities for describing the final state interactions in electro-induced proton emission off nuclear targets. A fully unfactorized relativistic formulation of Glauber multiple-scattering theory is presented. The effect of truncating the Glauber multiple-scattering series is discussed. Relativistic effects in the description of the final-state interactions are found not to exceed the few percent level. Also the frequently adopted approximation of replacing the wave functions for the individual scattering nucleons by some average density, is observed to have a minor impact on the results. Predictions for the separated $^4$He$(e,e'p)$ response functions are given in quasi-elastic kinematics and a domain corresponding with $1 \leq Q^2 \leq 2$ (GeV)$^2$.

Relativistic eikonal approximation in high-energy A(e,e'p) reactions

A fully relativistic model for the description of exclusive (e,e'p) reactions off nuclear targets at high energies and momentum transfers is outlined. It is based on the eikonal approximation for the ejectile scattering wave function and a relativistic mean-field approximation to the Walecka model. Results for ^{12}C(e,e'p) and ^{16}O(e,e'p) differential cross sections and separated structure functions are presented for four-momenta in the range 0.8 \leq Q^{2} \leq 20 (GeV/c)^{2}. The regions of applicability of the eikonal approximation are studied and observed to be confined to proton knockout in a relatively small cone about the momentum transfer. A simple criterium defining the boundaries of this cone is determined. The Q^2 dependence of the effect of off-shell ambiguities on the different (e,e'p) structure functions is addressed. At sufficiently high values of Q^2 their impact on the cross sections is illustrated to become practically negligible. It is pointed out that for the whole range of Q^2 values studied here, the bulk of the relativistic effects arising from the coupling between the lower components in the wave functions, is manifesting itself in the longitudinal-transverse interference term.

Tensor correlations in nuclei and exlusive electron scattering

The effect of tensor nucleon-nucleon correlations upon exclusive and semi-exclusive electronuclear reactions is studied. Differential cross sections for the semi-exclusive ^{16}O(e,e'p) and exclusive ^{16}O(e,e'pn) processes are computed by explicitly evaluating the dynamical electromagnetic coupling to a tensor correlated nucleon pair. In both reaction channels the tensor correlations contribute in a very substantial way. Tensor correlations are found to generate more electronuclear strength than central Jastrow correlations do.

Polarization degrees-of-freedom in electronuclear hadron production from finite nuclei

The polarization degrees-of-freedom in electronuclear two-nucleon knockout reactions are discussed. Model calculations for the unpolarized $^{16}$O(e,e$'$pp) cross sections at ($\mid \vec{q} \mid$,$ω$)=(210 MeV,300 MeV/c) are compared to recently obtained data. Predictions for the polarization observables in electronuclear two-nucleon knockout are presented. It is stressed that detailed studies of two-nucleon emission processes permit to constrain the contribution from two-nucleon mechanisms (like meson-exchange and isobar effects) to the single-nucleon knockout channel (e,e$'$p).
