Ordered Median Hub Location Problems with Capacity Constraints

The Single Allocation Ordered Median Hub Location problem is a recent hub model introduced in Puerto et al. (2011) that provides a unifying analysis of a wide class of hub location mod- els. In this paper, we deal with the capacitated version of this problem, presenting two formulations as well as some preprocessing phases for fixing variables. In addition, a strengthening of one of these formulations is also studied through the use of some fami- lies of valid inequalities. A battery of test problems with data taken from the AP library are solved where it is shown that the running times have been significantly reduced with the improvements presented in the paper.

Exact cost minimization of a series-parallel system

The redundancy allocation problem is formulated minimizing the design cost for a series-parallel system with multiple component choices whereas ensuring a given system reliability level. The obtained model is a nonlinear integer programming problem with a non linear, non separable constraint. We propose an algebraic method, based on Gröbner bases, to obtain the exact solution of the problem. In addition, we provide a closed form for the required Gröbner bases, avoiding the bottleneck associated with the computation, and promising computational results.

A Semidefinite Programming approach for minimizing ordered weighted averages of rational functions

This paper considers the problem of minimizing the ordered weighted average (or ordered median) function of finitely many rational functions over compact semi-algebraic sets. Ordered weighted averages of rational functions are not, in general, neither rational functions nor the supremum of rational functions so that current results available for the minimization of rational functions cannot be applied to handle these problems. We prove that the problem can be transformed into a new problem embedded in a higher dimension space where it admits a convenient representation. This reformulation admits a hierarchy of SDP relaxations that approximates, up to any degree of accuracy, the optimal value of those problems. We apply this general framework to a broad family of continuous location problems showing that some difficult problems (convex and non-convex) that up to date could only be solved on the plane and with Euclidean distance, can be reasonably solved with different $\ell_p$-norms and in any finite dimension space. We illustrate this methodology with some extensive computational results on location problems in the plane and the 3-dimension space.

An algebraic approach to Integer Portfolio problems

Integer variables allow the treatment of some portfolio optimization problems in a more realistic way and introduce the possibility of adding some natural features to the model. We propose an algebraic approach to maximize the expected return under a given admissible level of risk measured by the covariance matrix. To reach an optimal portfolio it is an essential ingredient the computation of different test sets (via Gröbner basis) of linear subproblems that are used in a dual search strategy.
