High-precision quadrupole moment reveals significant intruder component in 33Al20 ground state

The electric quadrupole moment of the 33Al20 ground state, located at the border of the island of inversion, was obtained using continuous-beam beta-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance (beta-NQR). From the measured quadrupole coupling constant Q = 2.31(4) MHz in an alpha-Al2O3 crystal, a precise value for the electric quadrupole moment is extracted: Qs= 141(3) mb. A comparison with large-scale shell model calculations shows that 33Al has at least 50% intruder configurations in the ground state wave function, favoring the excitation of two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. 33Al therefore clearly marks the gradual transition north of the deformed Na and Mg nuclei towards the normal Z>14 isotopes.

Isomer shift and magnetic moment of the long-lived 1/2+^{+} isomer in 3079^{79}_{30}Zn49_{49}: signature of shape coexistence near 78^{78}Ni

Collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed on the 3079^{79}_{30}Zn49_{49} isotope at ISOLDE-CERN. The existence of a long-lived isomer with a few hundred milliseconds half-life was confirmed, and the nuclear spins and moments of the ground and isomeric states in 79^{79}Zn as well as the isomer shift were measured. From the observed hyperfine structures, spins I=9/2I = 9/2 and I=1/2I = 1/2 are firmly assigned to the ground and isomeric states. The magnetic moment μμ (79^{79}Zn) = −-1.1866(10) μNμ_{\rm{N}}, confirms the spin-parity 9/2+9/2^{+} with a νg9/2−1νg_{9/2}^{-1} shell-model configuration, in excellent agreement with the prediction from large scale shell-model theories. The magnetic moment μμ (79m^{79m}Zn) = −-1.0180(12) μNμ_{\rm{N}} supports a positive parity for the isomer, with a wave function dominated by a 2h-1p neutron excitation across the N=50N = 50 shell gap. The large isomer shift reveals an increase of the intruder isomer mean square charge radius with respect to that of the ground state: δ⟨rc2⟩79,79mδ\langle r^{2}_{c}\rangle^{79,79m} = +0.204(6) fm2^{2}, providing first evidence of shape coexistence.

Unexpectedly large charge radii of neutron-rich calcium isotopes

Despite being a complex many-body system, the atomic nucleus exhibits simple structures for certain "magic" numbers of protons and neutrons. The calcium chain in particular is both unique and puzzling: evidence of doubly-magic features are known in 40,48Ca, and recently suggested in two radioactive isotopes, 52,54Ca. Although many properties of experimentally known Ca isotopes have been successfully described by nuclear theory, it is still a challenge to predict their charge radii evolution. Here we present the first measurements of the charge radii of 49,51,52Ca, obtained from laser spectroscopy experiments at ISOLDE, CERN. The experimental results are complemented by state-of-the-art theoretical calculations. The large and unexpected increase of the size of the neutron-rich calcium isotopes beyond N = 28 challenges the doubly-magic nature of 52Ca and opens new intriguing questions on the evolution of nuclear sizes away from stability, which are of importance for our understanding of neutron-rich atomic nuclei.

Ground-State Electromagnetic Moments of Calcium Isotopes

High-resolution bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy was used to measure the optical hyperfine spectra of the 43−51^{43-51}Ca isotopes. The ground state magnetic moments of 49,51^{49,51}Ca and quadrupole moments of 47,49,51^{47,49,51}Ca were measured for the first time, and the 51^{51}Ca ground state spin I=3/2I=3/2 was determined in a model-independent way. Our results provide a critical test of modern nuclear theories based on shell-model calculations using phenomenological as well as microscopic interactions. The results for the neutron-rich isotopes are in excellent agreement with predictions using interactions derived from chiral effective field theory including three-nucleon forces, while lighter isotopes illustrate the presence of particle-hole excitations of the 40^{40}Ca core in their ground state.

Spins and magnetic moments of 58;60;62;64Mn ground states and isomers

The odd-odd 54;56;58;60;62;64Mn isotopes (Z = 25) were studied using bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. From the measured hyperfine spectra the spins and magnetic moments of Mn isotopes up to N = 39 were extracted. The previous tentative ground state spin assignments of 58;60;62;64Mn are now firmly determined to be I = 1 along with an I = 4 assignment for the isomeric states in 58;60;62Mn. The I = 1 magnetic moments show a decreasing trend with increasing neutron number while the I = 4 moments remain quite constant between N = 33 and N = 37. The results are compared to large-scale shell-model calculations using the GXPF1A and LNPS effective interactions. The excellent agreement of the ground state moments with the predictions from the LNPS calculations illustrates the need for an increasing amount of proton excitations across Z = 28 and neutron excitations across N = 40 in the ground state wave functions from N = 37 onwards.

Shell structure of potassium isotopes deduced from their magnetic moments

\item[Background] Ground-state spins and magnetic moments are sensitive to the nuclear wave function, thus they are powerful probes to study the nuclear structure of isotopes far from stability. \item[Purpose] Extend our knowledge about the evolution of the 1/2+1/2^+ and 3/2+3/2^+ states for K isotopes beyond the N=28N = 28 shell gap. \item[Method] High-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy on bunched atomic beams. \item[Results] From measured hyperfine structure spectra of K isotopes, nuclear spins and magnetic moments of the ground states were obtained for isotopes from N=19N = 19 up to N=32N = 32. In order to draw conclusions about the composition of the wave functions and the occupation of the levels, the experimental data were compared to shell-model calculations using SDPF-NR and SDPF-U effective interactions. In addition, a detailed discussion about the evolution of the gap between proton 1d3/21d_{3/2} and 2s1/22s_{1/2} in the shell model and {\it{ab initio}} framework is also presented. \item[Conclusions] The dominant component of the wave function for the odd-AA isotopes up to 45^{45}K is a π1d3/2−1π1d_{3/2}^{-1} hole. For 47,49^{47,49}K, the main component originates from a π2s1/2−1π2s_{1/2}^{-1} hole configuration and it inverts back to the π1d3/2−1π1d_{3/2}^{-1} in 51^{51}K. For all even-AA isotopes, the dominant configuration arises from a π1d3/2−1π1d_{3/2}^{-1} hole coupled to a neutron in the ν1f7/2ν1f_{7/2} or ν2p3/2ν2p_{3/2} orbitals. Only for 48^{48}K, a significant amount of mixing with π2s1/2−1⊗ν(pf)π2s_{1/2}^{-1} \otimes ν(pf) is observed leading to a Iπ=1−I^π=1^{-} ground state. For 50^{50}K, the ground-state spin-parity is 0−0^- with leading configuration π1d3/2−1⊗ν2p3/2−1π1d_{3/2}^{-1} \otimes ν2p_{3/2}^{-1}.

Nuclear charge radii of potassium isotopes beyond N=28

We report on the measurement of optical isotope shifts for 38,39,42,44,46-51^{38,39,42,44,46\text{-}51}K relative to 47^{47}K from which changes in the nuclear mean square charge radii across the N=28 shell closure are deduced. The investigation was carried out by bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy at the CERN-ISOLDE radioactive ion-beam facility. Mean square charge radii are now known from 37^{37}K to 51^{51}K, covering all νf7/2νf_{7/2}-shell as well as all νp3/2νp_{3/2}-shell nuclei. These measurements, in conjunction with those of Ca, Cr, Mn and Fe, provide a first insight into the ZZ dependence of the evolution of nuclear size above the shell closure at N=28.

Spins and Magnetic Moments of 49^{49}K and 51^{51}K: establishing the 1/2+^+ and 3/2+^+ level ordering beyond NN = 28

The ground-state spins and magnetic moments of 49,51^{49,51}K have been measured using bunched-beam high-resolution collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE-CERN. For 49^{49}K a ground-state spin I=1/2I = 1/2 was firmly established. The observed hyperfine structure of 51^{51}K requires a spin I>1/2I > 1/2 and from its magnetic moment μ(51K)=+0.5129(22) μNμ(^{51}\text{K})= +0.5129(22)\, μ_N a spin/parity Iπ=3/2+I^π=3/2^+ with a dominant π1d3/2−1π1d_{3/2}^{-1} hole configuration was deduced. This establishes for the first time the re-inversion of the single-particle levels and illustrates the prominent role of the residual monopole interaction for single-particle levels and shell evolution.

Spins, Electromagnetic Moments, and Isomers of 107-129Cd

The neutron-rich isotopes of cadmium up to the N=82 shell closure have been investigated by high-resolution laser spectroscopy. Deep-UV excitation at 214.5 nm and radioactive-beam bunching provided the required experimental sensitivity. Long-lived isomers are observed in 127Cd and 129Cd for the first time. One essential feature of the spherical shell model is unambiguously confirmed by a linear increase of the 11/2- quadrupole moments. Remarkably, this mechanism is found to act well beyond the h11/2 shell.
