Euclid: Forecast constraints on consistency tests of the $Λ$CDM model

The standard cosmological model is based on the fundamental assumptions of a spatially homogeneous and isotropic universe on large scales. An observational detection of a violation of these assumptions at any redshift would immediately indicate the presence of new physics. We quantify the ability of the Euclid mission, together with contemporary surveys, to improve the current sensitivity of null tests of the canonical cosmological constant $Λ$ and the cold dark matter (LCDM) model in the redshift range $0<z<1.8$. We considered both currently available data and simulated Euclid and external data products based on a LCDM fiducial model, an evolving dark energy model assuming the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder (CPL) parameterization or an inhomogeneous Lema\^ıtre-Tolman-Bondi model with a cosmological constant $Λ$ (LLTB), and carried out two separate but complementary analyses: a machine learning reconstruction of the null tests based on genetic algorithms, and a theory-agnostic parametric approach based on Taylor expansion and binning of the data, in order to avoid assumptions about any particular model. We find that in combination with external probes, Euclid can improve current constraints on null tests of the LCDM by approximately a factor of three when using the machine learning approach and by a further factor of two in the case of the parametric approach. However, we also find that in certain cases, the parametric approach may be biased against or missing some features of models far from LCDM. Our analysis highlights the importance of synergies between Euclid and other surveys. These synergies are crucial for providing tighter constraints over an extended redshift range for a plethora of different consistency tests of some of the main assumptions of the current cosmological paradigm.

Prospects for Fundamental Physics with LISA

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Self-interacting scalar field cosmologies: unified exact solutions and symmetries

We investigate a mechanism that generates the exact solutions of scalar field cosmologies in a unified way. The procedure investigated here permits to recover allmost all known solutions, and allows one to derive new solutions as well. In particular, we derive and discuss one novel solution defined in terms of the Lambert function. The solutions are organized in a classification which depends on the choice of a generating function which we have denoted by $x(ϕ)$ that reflects the underlying thermodynamics of the model. We also analyse and discuss the existence of form invariances and dualities between solutions. A general way of defining the latter in an appropriate fashion for scalar fields is put forward.

Reheating induced by competing decay modes

We address the problem of studying the decay of the inflaton field $ϕ$ to another scalar field $χ$ through parametric resonance in the case of a coupling that involves several decay modes. This amounts to the presence of extra harmonic terms in the perturbation of the $χ$ field dynamics. For the case of two frequencies we compute the geometry of the resonance regions, which is significantly altered due to the presence of non-cuspidal resonance regions associated to higher harmonics and to the emergence of instability `pockets'. We discuss the effect of this change in the efficiency of the energy transfer process for the simplest case of a coupling given by a combination of the two interaction terms of homogeneous degree usually considered in the literature. We find that the presence of higher harmonics has limited cosmological implications.

Scalar field phase dynamics in preheating

We study the model of a massive inflaton field $ϕ$ coupled to another scalar filed $χ$ with interaction term $g^2ϕ^2χ^2$ for the first stage of preheating. We obtain the the behavior of the phase in terms of the iteration of a simple family of circle maps. When expansion of the universe is taken into account the qualitative behavior of the phase and growth number evolution is reminiscent of the behavior found in the case without expansion.
