Flavour and CP symmetries in the inverse seesaw

We consider an inverse seesaw mechanism of neutrino mass generation in which the Standard Model is extended by $3+3$ (heavy) sterile states, and endowed with a flavour symmetry $G_f$, $G_f=Δ(3 \, n^2)$ or $G_f=Δ(6 \, n^2)$, and a CP symmetry. These symmetries are broken in a peculiar way, so that in the charged lepton sector a residual symmetry $G_\ell$ is preserved, while the neutral fermion sector remains invariant under the residual symmetry $G_ν=Z_2 \times CP$. We study the concrete setup, where the Majorana mass term for three of the sterile states conserves $G_ν$, while the remaining mass terms (i.e. couplings of left-handed leptons and heavy sterile states, as well as the Dirac-type couplings among the latter) do not break the flavour or CP symmetry. We perform a comprehensive analysis of lepton mixing for different classes of residual symmetries, giving examples for each of these, and study in detail the impact of the additional sterile states on the predictions for lepton mixing. We further confront our results with those obtained in the model-independent scenario, in which the light neutrino mass matrix leaves the residual symmetry $G_ν$ intact. We consider the phenomenological impact of the inverse seesaw mechanism endowed with flavour and CP symmetries, in particular concerning effects of non-unitarity of the lepton mixing matrix (which strongly constrain the parameter space of the scenario), prospects for neutrinoless double beta decay and for charged lepton flavour violating processes.

Anomalies in $^8$Be nuclear transitions and $(g-2)_{e,μ}$: towards a minimal combined explanation

Motivated by a simultaneous explanation of the apparent discrepancies in the light charged lepton anomalous magnetic dipole moments, and the anomalous internal pair creation in $^8$Be nuclear transitions, we explore a simple New Physics model, based on an extension of the Standard Model gauge group by a $U(1)_{B-L}$. The model further includes heavy vector-like fermion fields, as well as an extra scalar responsible for the low-scale breaking of $U(1)_{B-L}$, which gives rise to a light $Z^\prime$ boson. The new fields and currents allow to explain the anomalous internal pair creation in $^8$Be while being consistent with various experimental constraints. Interestingly, we find that the contributions of the $Z^\prime$ and the new $U(1)_{B-L}$-breaking scalar can also successfully account for both $(g-2)_{e,μ}$ anomalies; the strong phenomenological constraints on the model's parameter space ultimately render the combined explanation of $(g-2)_e$ and the anomalous internal pair creation in $^8$Be particularly predictive. The underlying idea of this minimal "prototype model" can be readily incorporated into other protophobic $U(1)$ extensions of the Standard Model.

A nonunitary interpretation for a single vector leptoquark combined explanation to the $B$-decay anomalies

In order to simultaneously account for both $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ anomalies in $B$-decays, we consider an extension of the Standard Model by a single vector leptoquark field, and study how one can achieve the required lepton flavour non-universality, starting from a priori universal gauge couplings. While the unitary quark-lepton mixing induced by $SU(2)_L$ breaking is insufficient, we find that effectively nonunitary mixings hold the key to simultaneously address the $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$ anomalies. As an intermediate step towards various UV-complete models, we show that the mixings of charged leptons with additional vector-like heavy leptons successfully provide a nonunitary framework to explain $R_{K^{(\ast)}}$ and $R_{D^{(\ast)}}$. These realisations have a strong impact for electroweak precision observables and for flavour violating ones: isosinglet heavy lepton realisations are already excluded due to excessive contributions to lepton flavour violating $Z$-decays. Furthermore, in the near future, the expected progress in the sensitivity of charged lepton flavour violation experiments should allow to fully probe this class of vector leptoquark models.

Current status of the Standard Model CKM fit and constraints on $ΔF=2$ New Physics

This letter summarises the status of the global fit of the CKM parameters within the Standard Model performed by the CKMfitter group. Special attention is paid to the inputs for the CKM angles $α$ and $γ$ and the status of $B_s\toμμ$ and $B_d\to μμ$ decays. We illustrate the current situation for other unitarity triangles. We also discuss the constraints on generic $ΔF=2$ New Physics. All results have been obtained with the CKMfitter analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach and using Rfit to handle theoretical uncertainties.

Indirect searches for sterile neutrinos at a high-luminosity Z-factory

A future high-luminosity $Z$-factory will offer the possibility to study rare $Z$ decays, as those leading to lepton flavour violating final states. Processes such as $Z \to \ell_1^\mp \ell_2^\pm$ are potentially complementary to low-energy (high-intensity) observables of lepton flavour violation. In this work we address the impact of new sterile fermions on lepton flavour violating $Z$ decays, focusing on potential searches at FCC-ee (TLEP), and taking into account experimental and observational constraints on the sterile states. We consider a minimal extension of the Standard Model by one sterile fermion state, and two well-motivated frameworks of neutrino mass generation, the Inverse Seesaw embedded into the Standard Model, and the $ν$MSM. Our study shows that sterile neutrinos can give rise to contributions to BR($Z \to \ell_1^\mp \ell_2^\pm$) within reach of the FCC-ee. We also discuss the complementarity between a high-luminosity $Z$-factory and low-energy charged lepton flavour violation facilities.

Supersymmetric constraints from Bs -> mu+mu- and B -> K* mu+mu- observables

We study the implications of the recent LHCb limit and results on Bs -> mu+mu- and B -> K* mu+mu- observables in the constrained SUSY scenarios. After discussing the Standard Model predictions and carefully estimating the theoretical errors, we show the constraining power of these observables in CMSSM and NUHM. The latest limit on BR(Bs -> mu+mu-), being very close to the SM prediction, constrains strongly the large tan(beta) regime and we show that the various angular observables from B -> K* mu+mu- decay can provide complementary information in particular for moderate tan(beta) values.

Predictions of selected flavour observables within the Standard Model

This letter gathers a selection of Standard Model predictions issued from the metrology of the CKM parameters performed by the CKMfitter group. The selection includes purely leptonic decays of neutral and charged B, D and K mesons. In the light of the expected measurements from the LHCb experiment, a special attention is given to the radiative decay modes of B mesons as well as to the B-meson mixing observables, in particular the semileptonic charge asymmetries a^d,s_SL which have been recently investigated by the D0 experiment at Tevatron. Constraints arising from rare kaon decays are addressed, in light of both current results and expected performances of future rare kaon experiments. All results have been obtained with the CKMfitter analysis package, featuring the frequentist statistical approach and using Rfit to handle theoretical uncertainties.

Supersymmetric penguin contributions to the decay b -> s gamma with non-universal squarks masses

We give explicit expressions for the amplitudes associated with the supersymmetric contributions to the process: b -> s gamma in the context of SUSY extensions of Standard Model with non-universal soft SUSY breaking terms. From experimental data, we deduce the limits on the squark mass insertions obtained from different contributions (gluinos, neutralinos and charginos).

Standard Model CP-violation and Baryon asymmetry Part I: Zero Temperature

We consider quantum effects in a world with two coexisting symmetry phases, unbroken and spontaneously broken, as a result of a first order phase transition. The discrete symmetries of the problem are discussed in general. We compute the exact two-point Green function for a free fermion, when a thin wall separates the two phases. The Dirac propagator displays both massive and massless poles, and new CP-even phases resulting from the fermion reflection on the wall. We discuss the possible quark-antiquark CP asymmetries produced in the Standard Model(SM) for the academic $T=0$ case. General arguments indicate that an effect first appears at order $α_W$ in the reflection amplitude, as the wall acts as a source of momentum and the on-shell one-loop self-energy cannot be renormalized away. The asymmetries stem from the interference of the SM CP-odd couplings and the CP-even phases in the propagator. We perform a toy computation that indicates the type of GIM cancellations of the problem. The behaviour can be expressed in terms of two unitarity triangles.

Standard Model CP-violation and Baryon asymmetry Part II: Finite Temperature

We consider the scattering of quasi-particles off the boundary created during a first order electroweak phase transition. Spatial coherence is lost due to the quasi-quark damping rate, and we show that reflection on the boundary is suppressed, even at tree-level. Simply on CP considerations, we argue against electroweak baryogenesis in the Standard Model via the charge transport mechanism. A CP asymmetry is produced in the reflection properties of quarks and antiquarks hitting the phase boundary. An effect is present at order $α_W^2$ in rate and a regular GIM behaviour is found, which can be expressed in terms of two unitarity triangles. A crucial role is played by the damping rate of quasi-particles in a hot plasma, which is a relevant scale together with $M_W$ and the temperature. The effect is many orders of magnitude below what observation requires.

Generation of the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe within the Left--Right Symmetric Model

Fermions scattering off first-order phase transition bubbles, in the framework of $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\otimes U(1)$ models, may generate the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU), either at the $LR$-symmetry-breaking scale, or at the weak scale. In the latter case, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is related to CP violation in the $K_0$--$\bar K_0$ system.
