A 4D IIB Flux Vacuum and Supersymmetry Breaking. I. Fermionic Spectrum

We consider the type-IIB supergravity vacua that include an internal $T^5$, depend on a single coordinate $r$ and respect a four-dimensional Poincaré symmetry, with the aim of highlighting low-energy spectra with broken supersymmetry and a bounded string coupling. These vacua are characterized by the flux $Φ$ of the self-dual five form in the internal torus, the length $\ell$ of the interval described by the coordinate $r$, a dilaton profile that is inevitably constant and a strictly positive dimensionless parameter $h$. As $\ell\rightarrow\infty$ while retaining finite values for $Φ$ and $\ell \,h^{-\,\frac{5}{4}}$, half of the original ten-dimensional supersymmetry is recovered, while finite values of $\ell$ break it completely. In the large-$\ell$ limit one boundary disappears but the other is still present, and is felt as a BPS orientifold by a probe brane. In this paper we focus on the fermionic zero modes and show that, although supersymmetry is broken for finite values of $\ell$, they are surprisingly those of four-dimensional $N=4$ supergravity coupled to five vector multiplets. The gravitini can acquire masses via radiative corrections, absorbing four of the massless spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ modes.

On Warped String Vacuum Profiles and Cosmologies, I. Supersymmetric Strngs

We investigate in detail solutions of supergravity that involve warped products of flat geometries of the type M(p+1) x R x T(D-p-2) depending on a single coordinate. In the absence of fluxes, the solutions include flat space and Kasner-like vacua that break all supersymmetries. In the presence of a symmetric flux, there are three families of solutions that are characterized by a pair of boundaries and have a singularity at one of them, the origin. The first family comprises supersymmetric vacua, which capture a universal limiting behavior at the origin. The first and second families also contain non--supersymmetric solutions whose behavior at the other boundary, which can lie at a finite or infinite distance, is captured by the no--flux solutions. The solutions of the third family have a second boundary at a finite distance where they approach again the supersymmetric backgrounds. These vacua exhibit a variety of interesting scenarios, which include compactifications on finite intervals and (p+1)-dimensional effective theories where the string coupling has an upper bound. We also build corresponding cosmologies, and in some of them the string coupling can be finite throughout the evolution.

On Warped String Vacuum Profiles and Cosmologies, II. Non-Supersymmetric Strings

We investigate the effects of the leading tadpole potentials of 10D tachyon-free non-supersymmetric strings in warped products of flat geometries of the type M(p+1) x R x T(10-p-2) depending on a single coordinate. In the absence of fluxes and for p<8, there are two families of these vacua for the orientifold disk-level potential, both involving a finite internal interval. Their asymptotics are surprisingly captured by tadpole-free solutions, isotropic for one family and anisotropic at one end for the other. In contrast, for the heterotic torus-level potential there are four types of vacua. Their asymptotics are always tadpole-dependent and isotropic at one end lying at a finite distance, while at the other end, which can lie at a finite or infinite distance, they can be tadpole-dependent isotropic or tadpole-free anisotropic. We then elaborate on the general setup for including symmetric fluxes, and present the three families of exact solutions that emerge when the orientifold potential and a seven-form flux are both present. These solutions include a pair of boundaries, which are always separated by a finite distance. In the neighborhood of one, they all approach a common supersymmetric limit, while the asymptotics at the other boundary can be tadpole-free isotropic, tadpole-free anisotropic or again supersymmetric. We also discuss corresponding cosmologies, with emphasis on their climbing or descending behavior at the initial singularity. In some cases the toroidal dimensions can contract during the cosmological expansion.

Translation invariant time-dependent solutions to massive gravity II

This paper is a sequel to arXiv:1310.6560 [hep-th] and is also devoted to translation-invariant solutions of ghost-free massive gravity in its moving frame formulation. Here we consider a mass term which is linear in the vielbein (corresponding to a $β_3$ term in the 4D metric formulation) in addition to the cosmological constant. We determine explicitly the constraints, and from the initial value formulation show that the time-dependent solutions can have singularities at a finite time. Although the constraints give, as in the $β_1$ case, the correct number of degrees of freedom for a massive spin two field, we show that the lapse function can change sign at a finite time causing a singular time evolution. This is very different to the $β_1$ case where time evolution is always well defined. We conclude that the $β_3$ mass term can be pathological and should be treated with care.

Covariant constraints in ghost free massive gravity

We show that the reformulation of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity theory using vielbeins leads to a very simple and covariant way to count constraints, and hence degrees of freedom. Our method singles out a subset of theories, in the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley family, where an extra constraint, needed to eliminate the Boulware Deser ghost, is easily seen to appear. As a side result, we also introduce a new method, different from the Stuckelberg trick, to extract kinetic terms for the polarizations propagating in addition to those of the massless graviton.

Translation invariant time-dependent solutions to massive gravity

Homogeneous time-dependent solutions of massive gravity generalise the plane wave solutions of the linearised Fierz-Pauli equations for a massive spin-two particle, as well as the Kasner solutions of General Relativity. We show that they also allow a clear counting of the degrees of freedom and represent a simplified framework to work out the constraints, the equations of motion and the initial value formulation. We work in the vielbein formulation of massive gravity, find the phase space resulting from the constraints and show that several disconnected sectors of solutions exist some of which are unstable. The initial values determine the sector to which a solution belongs. Classically, the theory is not pathological but quantum mechanically the theory may suffer from instabilities. The latter are not due to an extra ghost-like degree of freedom.

QFT with Twisted Poincaré Invariance and the Moyal Product

We study the consequences of twisting the Poincare invariance in a quantum field theory. First, we construct a Fock space compatible with the twisting and the corresponding creation and annihilation operators. Then, we show that a covariant field linear in creation and annihilation operators does not exist. Relaxing the linearity condition, a covariant field can be determined. We show that it is related to the untwisted field by a unitary transformation and the resulting n-point functions coincide with the untwisted ones. We also show that invariance under the twisted symmetry can be realized using the covariant field with the usual product or by a non-covariant field with a Moyal product. The resulting S-matrix elements are shown to coincide with the untwisted ones up to a momenta dependent phase.

Group theoretical approach to quantum fields in de Sitter space I. The principal series

Using unitary irreducible representations of the de Sitter group, we construct the Fock space of a massive free scalar field. In this approach, the vacuum is the unique dS invariant state. The quantum field is a posteriori defined by an operator subject to covariant transformations under the dS isometry group. This insures that it obeys canonical commutation relations, up to an overall factor which should not vanish as it fixes the value of hbar. However, contrary to what is obtained for the Poincare group, the covariance condition leaves an arbitrariness in the definition of the field. This arbitrariness allows to recover the amplitudes governing spontaneous pair creation processes, as well as the class of alpha vacua obtained in the usual field theoretical approach. The two approaches can be formally related by introducing a squeezing operator which acts on the state in the field theoretical description and on the operator in the present treatment. The choice of the different dS invariant schemes (different alpha vacua) is here posed in very simple terms: it is related to a first order differential equation which is singular on the horizon and whose general solution is therefore characterized by the amplitude on either side of the horizon. Our algebraic approach offers a new method to define quantum field theory on some deformations of dS space.

Tachyon kinks on non BPS D-branes

We consider solitonic solutions of the DBI tachyon effective action for a non-BPS brane. When wrapped on a circle, these solutions are regular and have a finite energy. We show that in the decompactified limit, these solitons give Sen's infinitely thin finite energy kink -- interpreted as a BPS brane -- provided that some conditions on the potential hold. In particular, if for large $T$ the potential is exponential, $V = e^{-T^a}$, then Sen's solution is only found for $a<1$. For power-law potentials $V = 1/T^b$, one must have $b>1$. If these conditions are not satisfied, we show that the lowest energy configuration is the unstable tachyon vacuum with no kinks. We examine the stability of the solitons and the spectrum of small perturbations.

Brane solutions in strings with broken supersymmetry and dilaton tadpoles

The tachyon-free nonsupersymmetric string theories in ten dimensions have dilaton tadpoles which forbid a Minkowski vacuum. We determine the maximally symmetric backgrounds for the $USp(32)$ Type I string and the $SO(16)\times SO(16)$ heterotic string. The static solutions exhibit nine dimensional Poincaré symmetry and have finite 9D Planck and Yang-Mills constants. The low energy geometry is given by a ten dimensional manifold with two boundaries separated by a finite distance which suggests a spontaneous compactification of the ten dimensional string theory.

D-branes in non-tachyonic 0B orientifolds

We determine all D-branes in the non-tachyonic 0'B orientifold, examine their world-volume anomalies and study orbifold compactifications. We find that the spectrum of the D-branes contains chiral fermions in the symmetric, antisymmetric and fundamental representations of (unitary) gauge groups on the branes. The cancellation of the world-volume anomalies requires Wess-Zumino terms which we determine explicitly. We examine a non-tachyonic compactification to 9D whose closed part interpolates between 0B and IIB and revisit compactifications on orbifolds. The D3-brane allows to conjecture, via the AdS/CFT correspondence, a supergravity dual to a non-supersymmetric and infrared-free gauge theory. The D-string gives hints concerning the S-dual of the 0'B orientifold.

Super Fivebranes near the boundary of $AdS_7\times S^4$

We determine, to the first order in the radius of Anti-de-Sitter, the realisation of the $OSp(6,2|2)$ superconformal algebra on vector fields. We then calculate, to this order, the superspace metric describing the background of $AdS_7\times S^4$. The coordinates we work with are adapted to a 6+5 splitting of the eleven dimensional superspace. Finally, we deduce in a manifestly supersymmetric form the equations governing the dynamics of the fivebrane near the boundary of $AdS_7$.

Deformations of Differential Calculi

It has been suggested that quantum fluctuations of the gravitational field could give rise in the lowest approximation to an effective noncommutative version of Kaluza-Klein theory which has as extra hidden structure a noncommutative geometry. It would seem however from the Standard Model, at least as far as the weak interactions are concerned, that a double-sheeted structure is the phenomenologically appropriate one at present accelerator energies. We examine here to what extent this latter structure can be considered as a singular limit of the former.

Linear Connections in Non-Commutative Geometry

A construction is proposed for linear connections on non-commutative algebras. The construction relies on a generalisation of the Leibnitz rules of commutative geometry and uses the bimodule structure of $Ω^1$. A special role is played by the extension to the framework of non-commutative geometry of the permutation of two copies of $Ω^1$. The construction of the linear connection as well as the definition of torsion and curvature is first proposed in the setting of the derivations based differential calculus of Dubois- Violette and then a generalisation to the framework proposed by Connes as well as other non-commutative differential calculi is suggested. The covariant derivative obtained admits an extension to the tensor product of several copies of $Ω^1$. These constructions are illustrated with the example of the algebra of $ n \times n$ matrices.
