Precursor superconducting effects in the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ superconductor: the confrontation between superconducting fluctuations and percolative effects revisited

The confrontation between the superconducting fluctuations and percolation effects as the origin of the in-plane paraconductivity in cuprate superconductors was earlier addressed at a quantitative level in the case of the optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) compound. Using in-plane resistivity data from a high-quality YBCO thin film, we will extend these analyses to high reduced temperatures, in the case of the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the conventional superconducting fluctuations, by considering the total energy cutoff. These data will also be analysed in terms of the mean field-approach of the effective-medium theory, to probe if emergent percolative effects may account for the resistivity rounding above $T_c$. Our analyses confirm earlier conclusions: the measured paraconductivity cannot be explained in terms of emergent percolation processes, but it may be accounted for in terms of the GGL approach. These results also call into question alternative scenarios, including a recent proposal derived from emergent percolative effects.

Comment on 'Temperature range of superconducting fluctuations above $T_c$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ single crystals'

Contrary to the starting assumption of Grbić et al. (Phys. Rev. B 83, 144508 (2011)), here we will first argue that a 16 T magnetic field is not enough to quench all superconducting fluctuations above Tc in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$. We then conclude that through their measurements of microwave absorption these authors actually determine the ac-fluctuation magnetoconductivity at 16 T, instead of the zero-field ac paraconductivity as they pretend. So, the temperature proposed by Grbić et al. for the onset of the superconducting fluctuations, T', will correspond to the one at which the finite-field effects at 16 T become measurable in their experiments, and the actual fluctuations onset will be located well above T'. These conclusions, which also concern influential recent publications on that issue, are then confirmed by analyzing some of the Grbić et al., data on the grounds of the Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for the finite-field (or Prange) fluctuation regime.

Comment on "Multiorbital Effects on the Transport and the Superconducting Fluctuations in LiFeAs"

In the commented work (PRL 109, 187005 (2012)), Rullier-Albenque et al. present measurements of transverse magnetoresistivity above the transition temperature Tc in clean LiFeAs. By analyzing their data, these authors conclude that the conductivity induced by fluctuations follows a two-dimensional (2D) behavior even close to Tc, in spite that for LiFeAs the transverse coherence length ($ξ_c$(0)=1.6 nm) is larger than the Fe-layers spacing (s=0.636 nm), which would rather suggest a three-dimensional (3D) behavior. This striking proposal would have deep implications in the theoretical understanding of the multiband structure of iron pnictides, but it also contrasts with the 3D behavior observed near Tc in the same compound and in other iron pnictides with even smaller $ξ_c$(0)/s ratios. Here we show that the proposal of Rullier et al. could be just an artifact associated to an inadequate subtraction of the normal-state contribution.

Experimental observation of an anomalous peak in isofield M(T) curves in BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ resembling the fish-tail in $M$($H$) curves further suggesting a possible phase transition in the irreversible regime

We measure magnetization as a function of temperature, magnetic field and time in a BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.68}$P$_{0.32}$)$_2$ single crystal with $T_c$ = 27.6 K. The fish-tail observed on many $M$($H$) curves are used to construct isofield $M$($T$) curves which show an anomalous peak at some temperature $Tt$ suggesting a possible phase transition in the irreversible regime. A vortex dynamics study performed along the peaks evidences a minimum in the relaxation rate occurring at the same position $Tt$ of the minimum value of $M$ in these peaks. A vortex dynamics study performed on $M$($H$) curves show two distinct minimum in the relaxation rate: a first minimum ($H1$) for a lower field correlating with $Tt$ and a second ($H2$) correlating with the peak in the fish-tail. A phase diagram is constructed and the line corresponding to $Tt$ and $H1$ points obey an expression developed in the literature for a structural rhombic to square lattice phase transition, further supporting this view.

Magnetic field dependence of the precursor diamagnetism in La superconductors with magnetic Pr impurities

The interplay between fluctuating Cooper pairs and magnetic impurities in conventional BCS low-Tc superconductors has been studied through measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the fluctuation diamagnetism (FD) above Tc in lanthanum with praseodymium impurities. These measurements provide a crucial confirmation of our previous observation [Europhys. Lett. 73, 587 (2006)] that in the dilute impurity regime the FD increases almost linearly with the concentration of magnetic impurities. This striking effect is attributed to a variation due to the presence of the fluctuating Cooper pairs of the coupling between magnetic impurities. To describe these results at a phenomenological level, we propose a Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau model for the FD which includes an indirect contribution proportional to both the impurities concentration and the Cooper pairs density. Our approach is able to explain simultaneously the FD increase due to magnetic impurities and its decrease with the application of large magnetic fields.

Superconducting fluctuations in isovalently-substituted BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$: Possible observation of multiband effects

The nature of superconducting fluctuation effects in the isovalently-substituted iron pnictide BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ (x=0.35) is probed through measurements of the magnetization and magnetoconductivity around the superconducting transition. The results, obtained with magnetic fields up to 9 T applied in the two main crystal directions, are consistent with anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approaches for finite applied magnetic fields. The analysis allowed to determine with accuracy the out-of-plane, $ξ_c(0)$, and in-plane, $ξ_{ab}(0)$, GL coherence lengths. Significant differences are found between the $ξ_c(0)$ values resulting from electrical transport and magnetization data. According to recent theoretical approaches, these differences could be interpreted in terms of the multiband nature of this material. The analysis of data in the low field region around the transition temperature also suggests that phase fluctuations, although possibly relevant in other Fe-based superconductors, may play a negligible role in this compound.

Critical and Gaussian conductivity fluctuations in BaFe1.9Ni0.1As2 superconductor

We study fluctuation conductivity in a single crystal of BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_2$ superconductor ($T_c$ = 20 K) as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field. Magneto-conductivity curves, $Δσ$ vs. $T$, were analyzed in terms of -1/(dln($Δσ$)/d$T$) vs. $T$ plots, which allow to study different fluctuations regimes and to estimate exponent values and temperature widths of each regime. The analysis of magneto-conductivity curves evidence the existence of only two fluctuations regimes, a possible critical one (of glass-like type) going from the irreversible temperature to above $T_c(H)$ followed by Aslamazov-Larkin fluctuations in the Gaussian regime.

Direct measurement of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ superconductors

The temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals is determined directly from the shielding magnetic susceptibility, measured in the Meissner region with the field parallel to the ab layers. The doping levels studied cover the underdoped, optimally-doped and overdoped regimes. At temperatures below 0.5Tc a well-defined power-law behavior $λ_{ab}(T)-λ_{ab}(0)=AT^n$ (with n approximately 2.5) is observed. At lower temperatures (T<0.3Tc) the data are still consistent with n=2 and $A\propto T_c^{-3}$, as predicted by the strong pair-breaking scenario proposed by Gordon et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 180501(R) (2010). The temperature dependence of the superfluid density $ρ_s\proptoλ_{ab}^{-2}$ presents a marked positive curvature just below Tc which is a sign of two-gap superconductivity. The analysis of $ρ_s(T)$ in terms of a two-gap model allowed to estimate parameters like the in-band and inter-band couplings, the relative weight of each band, and their dependence with the doping level. A comparison with $ρ_s(T)$ data obtained by using other techniques in compounds with a similar composition is also presented.

Measurements of the superconducting fluctuations in optimally-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ under high magnetic fields: Probing the 3D anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau approach

The superconducting fluctuations well inside the normal state of Fe-based superconductors were experimentally studied through the in-plane paraconductivity in several high-quality optimally-doped BaFe$_{2-x}$Ni$_x$As$_2$ crystals. These measurements were performed in magnetic fields with amplitudes up to 14 T, and different orientations relative to the crystals c axis (0, 53 and 90 degrees). The results allowed a stringent check of the applicability of a recently proposed Ginzburg-Landau approach for the fluctuation electrical conductivity of 3D anisotropic materials in presence of finite applied magnetic fields.

Angular dependence of the fluctuation magnetization vector above the superconducting transition of a highly anisotropic high-Tc cuprate

In highly anisotropic cuprate superconductors it is generally accepted that the reversible magnetization vector, M, is essentially perpendicular to the superconducting CuO2 layers in a wide range of crystal orientations with respect to the applied magnetic field, H. In a recent work [J. Mosqueira et al., Phys. Rev. B 84, 134504 (2011)] it is shown, however, that the dependence of M on the H orientation in the reversible mixed state of a high-quality Tl-based cuprate presents a notable deviation from this behavior. Here we extend these measurements to the fluctuation region above Tc, in order to check whether the above mentioned effect is also present.

Comment on 'Diamagnetism and Cooper pairing above Tc in cuprates'

It is shown that the magnetization rounding measured by L. Li and coworkers above the superconducting transition in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d crystals under magnetic fields up to 14 T [Phys. Rev. B 81, 054510 (2010), arXiv:0906.1823] may be explained at a phenomenological level in terms of the mean field Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach for layered superconductors. This result challenges the claims of L. Li and coworkers, who write '[...] we are observing the phase-disordering mechanism, rather than Gaussian mean-field fluctuations', but it is in full agreement with earlier magnetization measurements by different authors in optimally-doped YBa2Cu3O7-d under lower magnetic fields. The adequacy of the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau descriptions is further confirmed when analyzing in terms of the GL scaling in the lowest-Landau-level (GL-LLL) approximation the magnetization data reported below Tc by L. Li and coworkers.

Measurements of the fluctuation-induced in-plane magnetoconductivity at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields in the iron arsenide BaFe(2-x)NixAs2

The superconducting fluctuations well inside the normal state of Fe-based superconductors were studied through measurements of the in-plane paraconductivity and magnetoconductivity in high quality BaFe(2-x)NixAs2 crystals with doping levels from the optimal (x=0.10) up to the highly overdoped (x=0.20). These measurements, performed in magnetic fields up to 9 T perpendicular to the ab (Fe) layers, allowed a reliable check of the applicability to iron-based superconductors of Ginzburg-Landau approaches for 3D anisotropic compounds, even at high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields. Our results also allowed us to gain valuable insights into the dependence on the doping level of some central superconducting parameters (coherence lengths and anisotropy factor).

New results on the anomalous precursor diamagnetism in the underdoped La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 superconductor

The new results summarized here, including a brief comparison with the paraconductivity, further suggest that the anomalous precursor (above Tc) diamagnetism recently observed in the underdoped La1.9Sr0.1CuO4 superconductor could be attributed to the presence, in addition to the conventional superconducting pair fluctuations, of Tc-inhomogeneities with long characteristic lengths associated with chemical disorder.

Precursor superconducting diamagnetism in YBa2Cu3O7-d with in-plane or intercalated magnetic impurities

The magnetization around the superconducting transition was measured in YBa2Cu3O7-d with magnetic impurities in the CuO2 layers (Cu substituted by Zn or Ni) or between them (Y substituted by Gd or Pr). While some of these impurities have an important effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc), the precursor diamagnetism observed above Tc is not appreciably affected. This result contrasts with recent observations in a conventional BCS superconductor (La), in which the precursor diamagnetism was found to increase several orders of magnitude with the addition of a small amount (a few atomic percent) of Gd or Pr magnetic impurities.

Three-dimensional anisotropic fluctuation diamagnetism around the superconducting transition of Ba(1-x)KxFe2As2 single crystals in the finite-field (or Prange) regime

The magnetization around the superconducting transition was recently measured in a high-quality Ba(1-x)KxFe2As2 single crystal with magnetic fields applied along and transverse to the crystal Fe-layers [J. Mosqueira et al., Phys. Rev. B 83, 094519 (2011)]. Here we extend this study to the finite field (or Prange) regime, in which the magnetic susceptibility is expected to be strongly dependent on the applied magnetic field. These measurements are analyzed in the framework of the three-dimensional anisotropic Ginzburg Landau (3D-aGL) approach generalized to the short wavelength regime through the introduction of a total-energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum. The results further confirm the adequacy of GL approaches to describe the fluctuation effects close to the superconducting transition of these materials.

Magnetic phase diagram of the layered superconductor Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CuO{6+δ} (Bi2201) with Tc~7 K

We report on magnetization measurements performed on a single crystal of Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CuO{6+δ} with Tc\sim7 K for H||c-axis. The isofield M(T) curves show a large reversible region, with a pronounced rounding effect as M approaches zero which prevents the determination of Tc(H). Deviations from the linear behavior of magnetisation near Tc(H) are studied through the asymptotic behavior of $\sqrt{-M(T)}\sim(T-Ta)^m$, where m is an exponent and Ta an apparent temperature transition. Values of m deviates from the expected mean field value, 1/2, suggesting the importance of phase fluctuations. Resulting values of Ta, interpreted as the onset of phase correlations, decrease as field increases showing an upward curvature. Values of Tc(H) are obtained through a two-dimensional critical scaling analysis obeyed by many M(T) curves. The resulting phase diagram do not show upward curvature and lies below the Ta(H) line. The value of H{c2}(0) estimated from the initial slope $H_{c2}/dT is twice the value suggested by the phase diagram. Amplitude fluctuations above Ta(H) are explained in terms of a Ginzburg-Landau approach extended to high reduced temperatures and magnetic fields by the introduction of a total-energy cutoff in the fluctuation spectrum.

Angular slippage from the crystallographic c-axis of the reversible magnetization vector in a tilted crystal of a highly anisotropic cuprate superconductor

The magnetization vector \vec M was measured in the reversible region of the mixed state of a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 single crystal as a function of temperature and for different magnetic field amplitudes and orientations. These measurements allowed to study the \vec M components perpendicular and parallel to the CuO2 layers (Mperp and Mpara, respectively) under arbitrary values for the corresponding components of the applied magnetic field, Hperp and Hpara. For temperatures close to Tc (in the critical fluctuation region) we observed Mperp(Hperp,Hpara) Mperp(Hperp,0) and Mpara(Hperp,Hpara)~0, as expected for an extremely anisotropic material. However, deviations from this behavior are observed at lower temperatures in the London region. In particular, the Mperp amplitude under a constant Hperp decreases on increasing Hpara. In turn, in spite of the experimental uncertainties affecting Mpara (mainly associated with the rotating sample holder), its amplitude under a constant Hpara becomes observable on increasing Hperp. Both effects lead to an angular slippage of the magnetization vector \vec M from the c crystallographic axis when the applied magnetic field is tilted from that axis. The Mperp behavior is phenomenologically explained in the framework of Lawrence-Doniach approaches for single layered superconductors by just assuming a slight angular dependence of the so-called vortex structure constant. However, the observed Mpara is orders of magnitude larger than expected, a fact which is related to the multilayered nature of the compound studied. Our present results also directly affect the interpretation of recent measurements of the magnetic torque in other extremely anisotropic high-Tc cuprates.

Observation of anisotropic diamagnetism above the superconducting transition in iron-pnictide Ba_(1-x)K_xFe2As2 single crystals due to thermodynamic fluctuations

High resolution magnetization measurements performed in a high quality Ba_(1-x)K_xFe2As2 single crystal allowed to determine the diamagnetism induced above the superconducting transition by thermally activated Cooper pairs. These data, obtained with magnetic fields applied along and transverse to the crystal ab layers, demonstrate experimentally that the superconducting transition of iron pnictides may be explained at a phenomenological level in terms of the Gaussian Ginzburg-Landau approach for three-dimensional anisotropic superconductors.

Magnetization vector in the reversible region of a highly anisotropic cuprate superconductor: anisotropy factor and the role of 2D vortex fluctuations

By using a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (Tl-2223) single crystal as an example, the magnetization vector was probed in the reversible region of highly anisotropic cuprate superconductors. For that, we have measured its components along and transverse to the applied magnetic field for different crystal orientations. The analysis shows that the angular dependence of the perpendicular component of the magnetization vector follows the one predicted by a London-like approach which includes a contribution associated with the thermal fluctuations of the 2D vortex positions. For the Tl-2223 crystal studied here, a lower bound for the anisotropy factor was estimated to be about 190.

Comment on ''Field-Enhanced Diamagnetism in the Pseudogap State of the Cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δSuperconductor in an Intense Magnetic Field''

In the above mentioned letter by Wang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett, 95, 247002 (2005)], magnetization measurements on two Bi_2Sr_2caCu_2O_8+delta samples are reported. They claim that these experimental results support the vortex scenario for the loss of phase coherence at Tc. On the contrary, we show in this comment that they can be explained by means of the Ginzburg Landau theory (under a total-enery cutoff) for the superconducting fluctuations above Tc.

In-plane and transverse superconducting fluctuation diamagnetism in the presence of charge-density waves in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals

The fluctuation-diamagnetism (FD) above the superconducting transition was measured in 2H-NbSe2 single crystals. The moderate uniaxial anisotropy of this compound, and some experimental improvements, allowed to measure the superconducting fluctuation effects in the two main crystallographic directions. These results reveal that the nonlocal electrodynamic effects on the FD are highly anisotropic, and they also discard a possible contribution to the FD coming from the charge-density waves (CDW) appearing below $Tcdw > Tc in 2H-NbSe2, in agreement with a phenomenological estimate.
