Rare decays of the top quark mediated by Z' gauge bosons and flavor violation

The rare top quark decays mediated by a new neutral massive gauge boson that is predicted in models with extended gauge symmetries are studied. We focus on the processes $t\to cV, uV$ induced at the one loop level, where $V =γ, g$, by considering different extended models. It is found that, within a broad range of mass of the new neutral gauge boson, the models predict branching ratios for the decays in study that are competitive with respect to the corresponding branching ratios in the standard model. In order to establish bound on our branching ratios, we consider the recent experimental bounds as $m_{Z^\prime}\geq$ 3.8-4.5 TeV, depending on the model, which also impose restrictions on our calculation. Even in this case, the resulting branching ratios are of the same order of magnitude as that predicted by the standard model. It should be noted that for the case of two models studied here, since no experimental bound exists to compare with, the results could be important, as they are, in the best of cases, two orders of magnitude larger than the predicted by the standard model.

Limits on the quartic couplings $Zγγγ$ and $ZZγγ$ from $e^+e^-$ colliders

We obtain limits on the quartic neutral gauge bosons couplings $Zγγγ$ and $ZZγγ$ using LEP 2 data published by the L3 Collaboration on the reactions $e^+e^-\to γγγ, Zγγ$. We also obtain $95 \%$ C. L. limits on these couplings at the future linear colliders energies. The LEP 2 data induce limits of order $10^{-5}$ $GeV^{-4}$ for the $Zγγγ$ couplings and of order $10^{-3}$ $GeV^{-2}$ for the $ZZγγ$ couplings, which are still above the respective Standard Model predictions. Future $e^+e^-$ linear colliders may improve these limits by one or two orders of magnitude.

Trilinear gauge boson couplings in the standard model with one universal extra dimension

One-loop effects of Standard Model (SM) extensions comprising universal extra dimensions are essential as a consequence of Kaluza-Klein (KK) parity conservation, for they represent the very first presumable virtual effects on low-energy observables. In this paper, we calculate the one-loop CP-even contributions to the SM WWgamma and WWZ gauge couplings produced by the KK excited modes that stand for the dynamical variables of the effective theory emerged from a generalization of the SM to five dimensions, in which the extra dimension is assumed to be universal, after compactification. The employment of a covariant gauge-fixing procedure that removes gauge invariance associated to gauge KK excited modes, while keeping electroweak gauge symmetry manifest, is a main feature of this calculation, which is performed in the Feynman 't Hooft gauge and yields finite results that consistently decouple for a large compactification scale. After numerical evaluation, our results show to be comparable with the one-loop SM contributions and well within the reach of a next linear collider.

Decays Z' -> γγγ and Z -> γγγ in the minimal 331 model

The possibility of a significant effect of exotic particles on the Z'->γγγ and Z->γγγ decays is investigated in the context of the minimal 331 model. This model, which is based in the SU_C(3)xSU_L(3)xU_X(1) gauge group, predicts the existence of many exotic charged particles that can significantly enhance the decay widths. It is found that the standard model prediction for the Z->γγγ decay remains essentially unchanged, as the new physics effects quickly decouples. On the other hand, it is found that the contributions of the new exotic quarks and gauge bosons predicted by this model lead to a branching fraction for the Z'->γγγ decay of about 10^(-6), which is about three orders of magnitude larger than that of the Z->γγγ decay.

Study of the lepton flavor-violating $Z'\toτμ$ decay

The lepton flavor violating $Z^{\prime}\toτμ$ decay is studied in the context of several extended models that predict the existence of the new gauge boson named $Z^\prime$. A calculation of the strength of the lepton flavor violating $Z^\primeμτ$ coupling is presented by using the most general renormalizable Lagrangian that includes lepton flavor violation. We used the experimental value of the muon magnetic dipole moment to bound this coupling, from which the $\mathrm{Re}(Ω_{Lμτ}Ω^\ast_{Rμτ})$ parameter is constrained and it is found that $\mathrm{Re}(Ω_{Lμτ}Ω^\ast_{Rμτ})\sim 10^{-2}$ for a $Z^\prime$ boson mass of 2 TeV. Alongside, we employed the experimental restrictions over the $τ\toμγ$ and $τ\toμμ^+μ^-$ processes in the context of several models that predict the existence of the $Z^\prime$ gauge boson to bound the mentioned coupling. The most restrictive bounds come from the calculation of the three-body decay. For this case, it was found that the most restrictive result is provided by a vector-like coupling, denoted as $|Ω_{μτ}|^2$, for the $Z_χ$ case, finding around $10^{-2}$ for a $Z^\prime$ boson mass of 2 TeV. We used this information to estimate the branching ratio for the $Z^\prime\toτμ$ decay. According to the analyzed models the least optimistic result is provided by the Sequential $Z$ model, which is of the order of $10^{-2}$ for a $Z^\prime$ boson mass around 2 TeV.

Bounding the B_s -> gamma gamma decay from Higgs mediated FCNC transitions

The Higgs mediated flavor violating bottom-strange quarks transitions induced at the one-loop level by a nondiagonal $Hbs$ coupling are studied within the context of an effective Yukawa sector that comprises $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$-invariant operators of up to dimension-six. The most recent experimental result on $B\to X_sγ$ with hard photons is employed to constraint the $Hbs$ vertex, which is used to estimate the branching ratio for the $B_s\to γγ$ decay. It is found that the $B_s\to γγ$ decay can reach a branching ratio of the order of $4\times 10^{-8}$, which is 2 orders of magnitude more stringent than the current experimental limit.

Z'-> ggg decay in left-right symmetric models with three and four fermion families

We study the Z'-> ggg decay in the context of a left-right symmetric gauge theory. We obtain a branching ratio BR(Z'-> ggg)=Γ(Z'->ggg)/ Γ(Z'-> q\bar{q})= (1.2-2.8) x 10^{-5} for m_{Z'}=(700-1500) GeV. We also study the contribution of a fourth fermion family. We find an enhancement in the branching ratio for Z' masses close to the \bar{b'}b' threshold and a dip for Z' masses close to the \bar{t'}t' threshold. Using the values of the fourth generation quark masses allowed by electroweak precision data we obtain a branching ratio BR(Z'-> ggg)= (1-6)x 10^{-5} for m_{Z'}=(700-1500) GeV.

Electric dipole and magnetic quadrupole moments of the $W$ boson via a CP-violating $HWW$ vertex in effective Lagrangians

The possibility of nonnegligible $W$ electric dipole ($\widetildeμ_W$) and magnetic quadrupole ($\widetilde{Q}_W$) moments induced by the most general $HWW$ vertex is examined via the effective Lagrangian technique. It is assumed that new heavy fermions induce an anomalous CP-odd component of the $HWW$ vertex, which can be parametrized by an $SU_L(2)\times U_Y(1)$-invariant dimension-six operator. This anomalous contribution, when combined with the standard model CP-even contribution, lead to CP-odd electromagnetic properties of the $W$ boson, which are characterized by the form factors $Δ\widetildeκ$ and $Δ\widetilde{Q}$. It is found that $Δ\widetildeκ$ is divergent, whereas $Δ\widetilde{Q}$ is finite, which reflects the fact that the latter cannot be generated at the one-loop level in any renormalizable theory. Assuming reasonable values for the unknown parameters, we found that $\widetildeμ_W\sim 3-6\times 10^{-21}$ e-cm, which is eight orders of magnitude larger than the SM prediction and close to the upper bound derived from the neutron electric dipole moment. The estimated size of the somewhat less-studied $\widetilde{Q}_W$ moment is of the order of $-10^{-36}$ e-cm^2, which is fifteen orders of magnitude above the SM contribution.

SU_L(2) X U_Y(1)-invariant description of the bilepton contribution to the WWV vertex in the minimal 331 model

We study the one-loop sensitivity of the WWV (V=gamma, Z) vertex to the new massive gauge bosons predicted by the minimal SU_L(3) X U_X(1) model, which have unusual couplings to the standard model (SM) gauge bosons. A gauge-fixing procedure covariant under the SU_L(2) X U_Y(1) group was introduced for these new gauge bosons (dubbed bileptons) in order to generate gauge-invariant Green functions. The similarities between this procedure and the nonconventional quantization scheme of the background field method are discussed. It is found that, for relatively light bileptons, with a mass ranging from 2m_W to 6m_W, the radiative corrections to the form factors associated with the WWV vertex can be of the same order of magnitude than the SM one. In the case of heavier bileptons, their contribution is smaller by about one and two orders of magnitude than their SM counterpart.
