Measurements of $B_c^+$ production and mass with the $B_c^+ \to J/ψπ^+$ decay

Measurements of $B_c^+$ production and mass are performed with the decay mode $B_c^+ \to J/ψπ^+$ using 0.37 fb $^{-1}$ of data collected in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of the production cross-section times branching fraction between the $B_c^+ \to J/ψπ^+$ and the $B^+ \to J/ψK^+$ decays is measured to be $(0.68 \pm 0.10\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.03\,({\rm syst.}) \pm 0.05\,({\rm lifetime}))$ % for $B_c^+$ and $B^+$ mesons with transverse momenta $p_{\rm T}>4$ GeV/ $c$ and pseudorapidities $2.5<η<4.5$ . The $B_c^+$ mass is directly measured to be $6273.7 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 1.6 \,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/ $c^2$ , and the measured mass difference with respect to the $B^+$ meson is $M(B_c^+)-M(B^+) = 994.6 \pm 1.3\,({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6\,({\rm syst.})$ MeV/ $c^2$ .

Observation of double charm production involving open charm in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =7 TeV

The production of $J/ψ$ mesons accompanied by open charm, and of pairs of open charm hadrons are observed in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV using an integrated luminosity of $355pb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. Model independent measurements of absolute cross-sections are given together with ratios to the measured $J/ψ$ and open charm cross-sections. The properties of these events are studied and compared to theoretical predictions.

First evidence for the annihilation decay mode $B^{+} \to D_{s}^{+} ϕ$

Evidence for the hadronic annihilation decay mode $B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ$ is found with greater than $3σ$ significance. The branching fraction and \CP asymmetry are measured to be \mathcal{B}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ) &=& (1.87^{+1.25}_{-0.73}({\rm stat}) \pm 0.19 ({\rm syst}) \pm 0.32 ({\rm norm})) \times 10^{-6}, \mathcal{A}_{CP}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ) &=& -0.01 \pm 0.41 ({\rm stat}) \pm 0.03 ({\rm syst}). The last uncertainty on $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \to D_s^{+}ϕ)$ is from the branching fractions of the $B^+ \to D_s^+ \kern 0.2em\bar{\kern -0.2em D}{}^0$ normalization mode and intermediate resonance decays. Upper limits are also set for the branching fractions of the related decay modes $B^{+}_{(c)} \to D^{+}_{(s)} K^{*0}$ , $B^{+}_{(c)} \to D^{+}_{(s)} \kern 0.2em\bar{\kern -0.2em K}{}^{*0}$ and ${B_c^{+} \to D^{+}_{s}ϕ}$ , including the result ${\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to D^+ K^{*0})} < 1.8 \times 10^{-6}$ at the 90% credibility level.

First observation of the decay $B_{s2}^(5840)^0 \to B^{+} K^-$ and studies of excited $B_s$ mesons

Properties of the orbitally excited (L=1) $B_s$ states are studied using 1.0 fb $^{-1}$ of pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} =7$ TeV collected with the LHCb detector. The first observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson decaying to $B^{*+} K^-$ is reported, and the corresponding branching fraction measured relative to the $B^+ K^-$ decay mode. The $B_{s1}(5830)^0 \to B^{*+} K^-$ decay is observed as well. The width of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ state is measured for the first time and the masses of the two states are determined with the highest precision to date. The observation of the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0 \to B^{*+} K^-$ decay favours the spin-parity assignment $J^P = 2^+$ for the $B_{s2}^*(5840)^0$ meson. In addition, the most precise measurement of the mass difference $m(B^{*+})-m(B^+) = 45.01 \pm 0.30 (stat) \pm 0.23 (syst)$ MeV/ $c^2$ is obtained.

First observation of the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} μ^{+} μ^{-}$

A discovery of the rare decay $B^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} μ^{+} μ^{-}$ is presented. This decay is observed for the first time, with 5.2 $σ$ significance. The observation is made using $pp$ collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb $^{-1}$ , collected with the LHCb detector. The measured branching fraction is (2.3 $\pm$ 0.6 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.1 (syst.)) $\times 10^{-8}$ , and the ratio of the $B^{+} \rightarrow π^{+} μ^{+} μ^{-}$ and $B^{+} \rightarrow \K^{+} μ^{+} μ^{-}$ branching fractions is measured to be 0.053 $\pm$ 0.014 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.001 (syst.).

Measurement of prompt hadron production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 0.9 and 7 TeV

The charged-particle production ratios $\bar{p}/p$ , $K^-/K^+$ , $π^-/π^+$ , $(p + \bar{p})/(π^+ + π^-)$ , $(K^+ + K^-)/(π^+ + π^-)$ and $(p + \bar{p})/(K^+ + K^-)$ are measured with the LHCb detector using $0.3 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ TeV and $1.8 {\rm nb^{-1}}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The measurements are performed as a function of transverse momentum $p_{\rm T}$ and pseudorapidity $η$ . The production ratios are compared to the predictions of several Monte Carlo generator settings, none of which are able to describe adequately all observables. The ratio $\bar{p}/p$ is also considered as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy \equiv y_{\rm beam} - y$ , and is used to constrain models of baryon transport.

Measurement of the $B^0$ -- $\bar B^0$ oscillation frequency $Δm_d$ with the decays $B^0 \to D^- π^+$ and $B^0 \to J/ ψK^{*0}$

The $B^0$ -- $\bar B^0$ oscillation frequency $Δm_d$ is measured by the LHCb experiment using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,$ fb $^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7\,$ TeV, and is found to be $Δm_d = 0.5156 \pm 0.0051\,($ stat. $) \pm 0.0033\,($ syst. $)\,$ ps $^{-1}$ . The measurement is based on results from analyses of the decays $B^0 \to D^- π^+$ ( $D^- \to K^+ π^- π^-$ ) and $B^0 \to J/ ψK^{*0}$ ( $J/ ψ\to μ^+ μ^-$ , $K^{*0} \to K^+ π^-$ ) and their charge conjugated modes.

Measurement of the CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 mu+ mu- decays

A measurement of the CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 mu+ mu- decays is presented, based on 1.0fb-1 of pp collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011. The measurement is performed in six bins of invariant mass squared of the mu+ mu- pair, excluding the J/psi and psi(2S) resonance regions. Production and detection asymmetries are removed using the B0 -> J/Psi K*0 decay as a control mode. The integrated CP asymmetry is found to be -0.072 +- 0.040 (stat.) +- 0.005 (syst.), consistent with the Standard Model.

Measurement of the fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7\tev$

The production of \chib1P mesons in $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $7\tev$ is studied using $32\invpb$ of data collected with the \lhcb detector. The $\chib1P$ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode $\chib1P \to \Y1S\g \to \mumu\g$. The fraction of \Y1S originating from \chib1P decays in the \Y1S transverse momentum range $6 < \pt^{\Y1S} < 15\gevc$ and rapidity range $2.0 < y^{\Y1S} < 4.5$ is measured to be $(20.7\pm 5.7\pm 2.1^{+2.7}_{-5.4})%$ , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last gives the range of the result due to the unknown \Y1S and \chib1P polarizations.

Measurement of the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B0 -> J/ψ KS0 decays

This Letter reports a measurement of the CP violation observables S_J/ψKS0 and C_J/ψKS0 in the decay channel B0 -> J/ψ KS0 performed with 1.0/fb of pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The fit to the data yields S_J/ψKS0 = 0.73 +- 0.07 (stat) +- 0.04 (syst) and C_J/ψKS0 = 0.03 +- 0.09 (stat) +- 0.01 (syst). Both values are consistent with the current world averages and within expectations from the Standard Model.

Search for the rare decay KS -> mu+ mu-

A search for the decay KS -> mu+ mu- is performed, based on a data sample of 1.0 fb^-1 of pp collisions at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The observed number of candidates is consistent with the background-only hypothesis, yielding an upper limit of BR(KS -> mu+ mu-) < 11 (9) x 10^-9 at 95 (90)% confidence level. This limit is a factor of thirty below the previous measurement.

A model-independent Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} h^+h^-$ ( $h=π, K$ ) decays and constraints on the CKM angle $γ$

A binned Dalitz plot analysis of $B^\pm \to D K^\pm$ decays, with $D \to K^0_{\rm S} π^+π^-$ and $D \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ K^-$ , is performed to measure the CP-violating observables $x_{\pm}$ and $y_{\pm}$ which are sensitive to the CKM angle $γ$ . The analysis exploits 1.0 $\rm fb^{-1}$ of data collected by the LHCb experiment. The study makes no model-based assumption on the variation of the strong phase of the D decay amplitude over the Dalitz plot, but uses measurements of this quantity from CLEO-c as input. The values of the parameters are found to be $x_- = (0.0 \pm 4.3 \pm 1.5 \pm 0.6) \times 10^{-2}$ , $y_- = (2.7 \pm 5.2 \pm 0.8 \pm 2.3) \times 10^{-2}$ , $x_+ = (-10.3 \pm 4.5 \pm 1.8 \pm 1.4)\times 10^{-2}$ and $y_+ = (-0.9 \pm 3.7 \pm 0.8 \pm 3.0)\times 10^{-2}$ . The first, second, and third uncertainties are the statistical, the experimental systematic, and the error associated with the precision of the strong-phase parameters measured at CLEO-c, respectively. These results correspond to $γ= (44^{\,+43}_{\,-38})^\circ$ , with a second solution at $γ\to γ+ 180^\circ$ , and $r_B = 0.07 \pm 0.04$ , where $r_B$ is the ratio between the suppressed and favoured B decay amplitudes.

A study of the $Z$ production cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV using tau final states

A measurement of the inclusive $Z \to ττ$ cross-section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV is presented based on a dataset of 1.0 fb $^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb detector. Candidates for $Z \to ττ$ decays are identified through reconstructed final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. The production cross-section for $Z$ bosons, with invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV/ $c^2$ , which decay to $τ$ leptons with transverse momenta greater than 20 GeV/ $c$ and pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5, is measured to be $σ_{pp \to Z \to ττ} = 71.4 \pm 3.5 \pm 2.8 \pm 2.5$ pb; the first uncertainty is statistical, the second uncertainty is systematic, and the third is due to the uncertainty on the integrated luminosity. The ratio of the cross-sections for $Z \to ττ$ to $Z \to μμ$ is determined to be $0.93 \pm 0.09$ , where the uncertainty is the combination of statistical, systematic, and luminosity uncertainties of the two measurements.

Absolute luminosity measurements with the LHCb detector at the LHC

Absolute luminosity measurements are of general interest for colliding-beam experiments at storage rings. These measurements are necessary to determine the absolute cross-sections of reaction processes and are valuable to quantify the performance of the accelerator. Using data taken in 2010, LHCb has applied two methods to determine the absolute scale of its luminosity measurements for proton-proton collisions at the LHC with a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. In addition to the classic "van der Meer scan" method a novel technique has been developed which makes use of direct imaging of the individual beams using beam-gas and beam-beam interactions. This beam imaging method is made possible by the high resolution of the LHCb vertex detector and the close proximity of the detector to the beams, and allows beam parameters such as positions, angles and widths to be determined. The results of the two methods have comparable precision and are in good agreement. Combining the two methods, an overall precision of 3.5% in the absolute luminosity determination is reached. The techniques used to transport the absolute luminosity calibration to the full 2010 data-taking period are presented.

Analysis of the resonant components in Bs->J/ψπ+π-

The decay Bs->J/ψπ+π- can be exploited to study CP violation. A detailed understanding of its structure is imperative in order to optimize its usefulness. An analysis of this three-body final state is performed using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis of the final state is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. The π+π- system is shown to be dominantly in an S-wave state, and the CP-odd fraction in this Bs decay is shown to be greater than 0.977 at 95% confidence level. In addition, we report the first measurement of the J/ψπ+π- branching fraction relative to J/ψϕ of (19.79 +/- 0.47 +/- 0.52)%.

Determination of the sign of the decay width difference in the B_s system

The interference between the K+K- S-wave and P-wave amplitudes in B_s -> J/psi K+K- decays with the K+K- pairs in the region around the phi(1020) resonance is used to determine the variation of the difference of the strong phase between these amplitudes as a function of K+K- invariant mass. Combined with the results from our CP asymmetry measurements in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, we conclude that the B_s mass eigenstate that is almost CP =+1 is lighter and decays faster than the mass eigenstate that is almost CP =-1. This determines the sign of the decay width difference DeltaGamma_s == Gamma_L -Gamma_H to be positive. Our result also resolves the ambiguity in the past measurements of the CP violating phase phi_s to be close to zero rather than pi. These conclusions are in agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay

The angular distribution and differential branching fraction of the decay $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ are studied with a dataset corresponding to $1.0\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by the LHCb experiment. The angular distribution is measured in bins of dimuon invariant mass squared and found to be consistent with Standard Model expectations. Integrating the differential branching fraction over the full dimuon invariant mass range yields a total branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}) = (4.36 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.18)\times 10^{-7}$ . These measurements are the most precise to date of the $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}μ^{+}μ^{-}$ decay.

Differential branching fraction and angular analysis of the decay $\boldsymbol{B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-}$

The angular distributions and the partial branching fraction of the decay $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{*0} μ^+ μ^-$ are studied using an integrated luminosity of $0.37\,fb^{-1}$ of data collected with the LHCb detector. The forward-backward asymmetry of the muons, $A_{\mathrm{FB}}$ , the fraction of longitudinal polarisation, $F_{\mathrm{L}}$ , and the partial branching fraction, $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}$ , are determined as a function of the dimuon invariant mass. The measurements are in good agreement with the Standard Model predictions and are the most precise to date. In the dimuon invariant mass squared range $1.00-6.00{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}^2/c^4$ , the results are $A_{\mathrm{FB}}=-0.06\,^{+0.13}_{-0.14} \pm 0.04$ , $F_{\mathrm{L}}=0.55\pm 0.10\pm 0.03$ and $\mathrm{d}{\mathcal B}/\mathrm{d}q^{2}=(0.42 \pm 0.06\pm 0.03) \times 10^{-7}c^4/{\mathrm{\,Ge\kern -0.1em V}}^2$ . In each case, the first error is statistical and the second systematic.

Evidence for CP violation in time-integrated D0 -> h-h+ decay rates

A search for time-integrated CP violation in D0 -> h-h+ (h=K, pi) decays is presented using 0.62 fb^-1 of data collected by LHCb in 2011. The flavor of the charm meson is determined by the charge of the slow pion in the D*+ -> D0 pi+ and D*- -> D0bar pi- decay chains. The difference in CP asymmetry between D0 -> K-K+ and D0 -> pi-pi+, Delta ACP = ACP(K-K+) - ACP(pi-pi+), is measured to be [-0.82 \pm 0.21(stat.) \pm 0.11(syst.)]%. This differs from the hypothesis of CP conservation by 3.5 standard deviations.

Evidence for the decay $B^0\to J/ψω$ and measurement of the relative branching fractions of $B^0_s$ meson decays to $J/ψη$ and $J/ψη^{'}$

First evidence of the $B^0\to J/ψω$ decay is found and the $B_{s}^0\to J/ψη$ and $B_{s}^0\to J/ψη^{\prime}$ decays are studied using a dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV. The branching fractions of these decays are measured relative to that of the $\mathrm{B}^0\to J/ψρ^0$ decay: $\frac{Br(B^0\to J/ψω)}{Br(B^0\to J/ψρ^0)} = 0.89 \pm0.19(stat)^{+0.07}_{-0.13}(syst)$ $\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη)}{Br(B^0\to J/ψρ^0)} = 14.0 \pm 1.2(stat)^{+1.1}_{-1.5}(syst)^{+1.1}_{-1.0}(\frac{f_d}{f_s}),$ $\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη^{\prime})}{Br(B^0\to J/ψρ^0)} = 12.7\pm1.1(stat)^{+0.5}_{-1.3}(syst)^{+1.0}_{-0.9}(\frac{f_d}{f_s}),$ where the last uncertainty is due to the knowledge of $f_d/f_s$ , the ratio of b-quark hadronization factors that accounts for the different production rate of $B^0$ and $B^0_s$ mesons. The ratio of the branching fractions of $B^0_s\to J/ψη^{\prime}$ and $B^0_s\to J/ψη$ decays is measured to be $\frac{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη^{\prime})}{Br(B^0_s\to J/ψη)} = 0.90\pm0.09(stat)^{+0.06}_{-0.02}(syst).$

First evidence of direct CP violation in charmless two-body decays of Bs mesons

Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.35 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ collected by LHCb in 2011, we report the first evidence of CP violation in the decays of $B^0_s$ mesons to $K^\pm π^\mp$ pairs, $A_{CP}(B^0_s \rightarrow K π)=0.27 \pm 0.08\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.02\,\mathrm{(syst)}$ , with a significance of 3.3 $σ$ . Furthermore, we report the first observation of CP violation in $B^0$ decays at a hadron collider, $A_{CP}(B^0 \rightarrow Kπ)=-0.088 \pm 0.011\,\mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.008\,\mathrm{(syst)}$ , with a significance exceeding 6 $σ$ .

First observation of the decay $B^0_s \rightarrow K^{0} \bar{K]^{0}$

The first observation of the decay $\kstarkstar$ is reported using 35\invpb of data collected by LHCb in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. A total of $49.8 \pm 7.5$ $B^0_s \rightarrow (K^+π^-)(K^-π^+)$ events are {observed within $\pm 50 \mevcc$ of the \Bs mass and $746 \mevcc < m_{Kπ}< 1046 \mevcc$, mostly coming from a resonant $\kstarkstar$ signal.} The branching fraction and the \CP-averaged \Kstarz longitudinal polarization fraction are measured to be {$\BR(\kstarkstar) = (2.81 \pm 0.46 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.45 ({\rm syst.}) \pm 0.34\, (f_s/f_d))\times10^{-5}$} and $f_L = 0.31 \pm 0.12 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.04 ({\rm syst.})$ .

First observation of the decay Bc+ to J/psi pi+pi-pi+

The decay Bc+ --> J/psi pi+pi-pi+ is observed for the first time, using 0.8 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt{s}=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. The ratio of branching fractions BR(Bc+ --> J/psi pi+pi-pi+)/BR(B_c+ --> J/psi pi+) is measured to be 2.41+-0.30+-0.33, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The result is in agreement with theoretical predictions.

First observation of the decays $\bar{B}^0_{(s)}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0_s\to D_{s1}(2536)^+π^-$

The first observation of the decays $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$ are reported using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb $^{-1}$ recorded by the LHCb experiment. The branching fractions, normalized with respect to $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-$ and $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$ , respectively, are measured to be {\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-)} &= (5.2\pm0.5\pm0.3)\times10^{-2}, {\br(\bar{B}^0\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-^π^+π^-)} &= 0.54\pm0.07\pm0.07, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+K^-π^+π^-$ decay is of particular interest as it can be used to measure the weak phase $γ$ . First observation of the $\bar{B}^0_s\to D_{s1}(2536)^+π^-, D_{s1}^+\to D_s^+π^-π^+$ decay is also presented, and its branching fraction relative to $\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-$ is found to be {\br(\bar{B}^0_s\to D_{s1}(2536)^+π^-, D_{s1}^+\to D_s^+π^-π^+)\over\br(\bar{B}^0_{s}\to D_s^+π^-π^+π^-)} &= (4.0\pm1.0\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}.

First observation of the decays B0bar -->D+ K- pi+ pi- and B- --> D0 K- pi+ pi-

First observations of the Cabibbo suppressed decays B0bar -->D+ K- pi+ pi- and B- --> D0 K- pi+ pi- are reported using 35 pb^{-1} of data collected with the LHCb detector. Their branching fractions are measured with respect to the corresponding Cabibbo favored decays, from which we obtain B(B0bar --> D+ K- pi+ pi-)/B(B0bar --> D+ pi- pi+ pi-)=(5.9\pm1.1\pm0.5) x 10^{-2} and B(B- --> D0 K- pi+ pi-)/B(B- --> D0 pi- pi+ pi-)=(9.4\pm1.3\pm0.9) x 10^{-2}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The B- --> D0 K- pi+ pi- decay is particularly interesting, as it can be used in a similar way to B- --> D0 K- to measure the CKM phase gamma.

Inclusive $W$ and $Z$ production in the forward region at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV

Measurements of inclusive $W$ and $Z$ boson production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV using final states containing muons are presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb $^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $W$ and $Z$ bosons are reconstructed from muons with a transverse momentum above 20 GeV $/c$ and pseudorapidity between 2.0 and 4.5, and, in the case of the $Z$ cross-section, a dimuon invariant mass between 60 and 120 GeV $/c^2$ . The cross-sections are measured to be { $831\pm9\pm27\pm 29$ pb} for $W^+$ , { $656\pm8\pm19\pm 23$ pb} for $W^-$ and { $76.7\pm1.7\pm3.3\pm2.7$ pb} for $Z$ , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the luminosity. Differential cross-sections, $W$ and $Z$ cross-section ratios and the lepton charge asymmetry are also measured in the same kinematic region. The ratios are determined to be $σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} / σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν}=$ { $1.27\pm0.02\pm0.01$ }, and $σ_{W^+\rightarrowμ^+ν} + σ_{W^-\rightarrowμ^-\barν})/σ_{Z\rightarrowμμ}=$ { $19.4\pm0.5\pm0.9$ }. The results are in general agreement with theoretical predictions, performed at next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD using recently calculated parton distribution functions.

Measurement of $b$ -hadron branching fractions for two-body decays into charmless charged hadrons

Based on data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb^-1 collected by the LHCb experiment in 2011, the following ratios of branching fractions are measured: B(B0 -> pi+ pi-) / B(B0 -> K+pi-) = 0.262 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.017, (fs/fd) * B(Bs -> K+K-) / B(B^0 -> K+pi-) = 0.316 +/- 0.009 +/- 0.019, (fs/fd) * B(Bs ->pi+ K-) / B(B0 -> K+pi-) = 0.074 +/- 0.006 +/- 0.006, (fd/fs) * B(B0 -> K+K-) / B(Bs -> K+K-) = 0.018 {+ 0.008 - 0.007} +/- 0.009, (fs/fd) * B(Bs -> pi+pi-) / B(B0 -> pi+pi-) = 0.050 {+ 0.011 - 0.009} +/- 0.004, B(Lambda_b -> p pi-) / B(Lambda_b -> p K-) = 0.86 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.05, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. Using the current world average of B(B0 -> K+pi-) and the ratio of the strange to light neutral B meson production fs/fd measured by LHCb, we obtain: B(B0 -> pi+pi-) = (5.08 +/- 0.17 +/- 0.37) x 10^-6, B(Bs -> K+K-) = (23.0 +/- 0.7 +/- 2.3) x 10^-6, B(Bs -> pi+K-) = (5.4 +/- 0.4 +/- 0.6) x 10^-6, B(B0 -> K+K-) = (0.11 {+ 0.05 - 0.04} +/- 0.06) x 10^-6, B(Bs -> pi+pi-) = (0.95 {+ 0.21 - 0.17} +/- 0.13) x 10^-6. The measurements of B(Bs -> K+K-), B(Bs -> pi+ K-) and B(B0 -> K+K-) are the most precise to date. The decay mode Bs -> pi+pi- is observed for the first time with a significance of more than 5 sigma.

Measurement of b hadron production fractions in 7 TeV pp collisions

Measurements of $b$ hadron production ratios in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 3 pb $^{-1}$ are presented. We study the ratios of strange $B$ meson to light $B$ meson production $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ and $Λ_b^0$ baryon to light $B$ meson production $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ as a function of the charmed hadron-muon pair transverse momentum $p_T$ and the $b$ hadron pseudorapidity $η$ , for $p_T$ between 0 and 14 GeV and $η$ between 2 and 5. We find that $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ is consistent with being independent of $p_{\rm T}$ and $η$ , and we determine $f_s/(f_u+f_d)$ = 0.134 $\pm$ 0.004 $^{+0.011}_{-0.010}$ , where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. The corresponding ratio $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)$ is found to be dependent upon the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron-muon pair, $f_{Λ_b}/(f_u+f_d)=(0.404\pm 0.017 (stat) \pm 0.027 (syst) \pm 0.105 (Br))\times[1 -(0.031 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst))\times p_T(GeV)]$ , where Br reflects an absolute scale uncertainty due to the poorly known branching fraction Br(Λ_c^+ \to pK^-π^+) $. We extract the ratio of strange$ B $meson to light neutral$ B $meson production$ f_s/f_d $by averaging the result reported here with two previous measurements derived from the relative abundances of$ \bar{B}_s \to D_S^+ π^- $to$ \bar{B}^0 \to D^+K^- $and$ \bar{B}^0 \to D^+π^- $. We obtain$ f_s/f_d=0.267^{+0.021}_{-0.020}$.

Measurement of b-hadron masses

Measurements of b-hadron masses are performed with the exclusive decay modes B+ -> J/psi K+, B0 -> J/psi K*0, B0 -> J/psi K0S, B0_s -> J/psi phi and Lambda_b -> J/psi Lambda using an integrated luminosity of 35 pb-1 collected in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. The momentum scale is calibrated with J/psi -> mu+mu- decays and verified to be known to a relative precision of 2 x 10^-4 using other two-body decays. The results are more precise than previous measurements, particularly in the case of the B0_s and Lambda_b masses.

Measurement of the $B_s^0\to J/ψK_S^0$ branching fraction

The $B_s^0\to J/ψK_S^0$ branching fraction is measured in a data sample corresponding to 0.41 $fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. This channel is sensitive to the penguin contributions affecting the sin2 $β$ measurement from $B^0\to J/ψK_S^0$ The time-integrated branching fraction is measured to be $BF(B_s^0\to J/ψK_S^0)=(1.83\pm0.28)\times10^{-5}$ . This is the most precise measurement to date.

Measurement of the $B^0_s\rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ branching fraction and angular amplitudes

A search for the decay $B^0_s\rightarrow J/ψK^{*0}$ with $K^{*0} \rightarrow K^-π^+$ is performed with 0.37 fb $^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment, finding a $\Bs \to JψK^-π^+$ peak of $114 \pm 11$ signal events. The $K^-π^+$ mass spectrum of the candidates in the $B^0_s$ peak is dominated by the $K^{*0}$ contribution. Subtracting the non-resonant $K^-π^+$ component, the branching fraction of \BsJpsiKst is $(4.4_{-0.4}^{+0.5} \pm 0.8) \times 10^{-5}$ , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. A fit to the angular distribution of the decay products yields the \Kst polarization fractions $f_L = 0.50 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.02$ and $f_{||} = 0.19^{+0.10}_{-0.08} \pm 0.02$ .

Measurement of the B^0_s - \bar{B}^0_s oscillation frequency Delta m_s in B^0_s -> D_s^-(3) pi decays

The B^0_s-\bar{B}^0_s oscillation frequency Delta m_s is measured with 36 pb^{-1} of data collected in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. A total of 1381 B^0_s -> D_s^- π^+ and \B^0_s -> D_s^- pi^+ pi^- pi^+ signal decays are reconstructed, with average decay time resolutions of 44 fs and 36 fs, respectively. An oscillation signal with a statistical significance of 4.6 sigma is observed. The measured oscillation frequency is Delta m_s = 17.63 \pm 0.11 (stat) \pm 0.02 (syst) ps^{-1}.

Measurement of the B+- production cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

The production of B+- mesons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied using 35 pb-1 of data collected by the LHCb detector. The B+- mesons are reconstructed exclusively in the B+- -> J/psi K+- mode, with J/psi -> mu+ mu-. The differential production cross-section is measured as a function of the B+- transverse momentum in the fiducial region 0 < pT < 40 GeV/c and with rapidity 2.0 < y < 4.5. The total cross-section, summing up B+ and B-, is measured to be sigma(pp -> B+- X, 0 < pT < 40 GeV/c, 2.0 < y < 4.5) = 41.4 +- 1.5 (stat.) +- 3.1 (syst.) mub.

Measurement of the Bs effective lifetime in the J/psi f0(980) final state

The effective lifetime of the Bs meson in the decay mode Bs->J/ψf0(980) is measured using 1.0/fb of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the LHCb detector. The result is 1.700 +/- 0.040 +/- 0.026 ps where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. As the final state is CP-odd, and CP violation in this mode is measured to be small, the lifetime measurement can be translated into a measurement of the decay width of the heavy Bs mass eigenstate, Γ_H = (0.588 +/- 0.014 +/- 0.009)/ps.

Measurement of the CP violating phase ϕ_s in Bs->J/ψf0(980)

Measurement of mixing-induced CP violation in Bs decays is of prime importance in probing new physics. So far only the channel Bs->J/ψϕ has been used. Here we report on a measurement using an LHCb data sample of 0.41/fb in the CP odd eigenstate Jψf0(980), where f0(980)->π+ π-. A time dependent fit of the data with the Bs lifetime and the difference in widths of the heavy and light eigenstates constrained to the values obtained from Bs-> J/ψϕ yields a value of the CP violating phase of -0.44 +/- 0.44 +/- 0.02 rad, consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase phi_s in the decay Bs->J/psi phi

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating asymmetry in B_s -> J/psi phi decays, using data collected with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The decay time distribution of B_s -> J/psi phi is characterized by the decay widths Gamma_H and Gamma_L of the heavy and light mass eigenstates of the B_s-B_s-bar system and by a CP-violating phase phi_s. In a sample of about 8500 B_s -> J/psi phi events isolated from 0.37 fb^-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV we measure phi_s = 0.15 +/- 0.18 (stat) +/- 0.06 (syst) rad. We also find an average B_s decay width Gamma_s == (Gamma_L + Gamma_H)/2 = 0.657 +/- 0.009 (stat) +/- 0.008 (syst) ps^-1 and a decay width difference Delta Gamma_s == Gamma_L - Gamma_H} = 0.123 +/- 0.029 (stat) +/- 0.011 (syst) ps^-1. Our measurement is insensitive to the transformation (phi_s,DeltaGamma_s --> pi - phi_s, - Delta Gamma_s.

Measurement of the CP-violating phase ϕs in Bs->J/ψπ+π- decays

Measurement of the cross-section ratio $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$ for prompt $χ_c$ production at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The prompt production of the charmonium $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ mesons has been studied in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The $χ_c$ mesons are identified through their decays $χ_c\to J/ψ\,γ$ with $J/ψ\to μ^+ μ^-$ using 36 $\mathrm{pb^{-1}}$ of data collected by the LHCb detector in 2010. The ratio of the prompt production cross-sections for the two $χ_c$ spin states, $σ(χ_{c2})/σ(χ_{c1})$ , has been determined as a function of the $J/ψ$ transverse momentum, $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$ , in the range from 2 to 15 GeV/ $c$ . The results are in agreement with the next-to-leading order non-relativistic QCD model at high $p_{\mathrm{T}}^{J/ψ}$ and lie consistently above the pure leading-order colour singlet prediction.

Measurement of the D+/- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

The asymmetry in the production cross-section σof D+/- mesons, A_P = (σ(D+) - σ(D-))/(σ(D+) + σ(D-)), is measured in bins of pseudorapidity ηand transverse momentum p_T within the acceptance of the LHCb detector. The result is obtained with a sample of D+ -> K_S pi+ decays corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^-1, collected in pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of 7 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. When integrated over the kinematic range 2.0 < p_T < 18.0 GeV/c and 2.20 < η< 4.75, the production asymmetry is A_P = (-0.96+/-0.26+/-0.18)%. The uncertainties quoted are statistical and systematic, respectively. The result assumes that any direct CP violation in the D+ -> K_S pi+ decay is negligible. No significant dependence on ηor p_T is observed.

Measurement of the Ds+ - Ds- production asymmetry in 7 TeV pp collisions

Heavy quark production in 7 TeV centre-of-mass energy pp collisions at the LHC is not necessarily flavour symmetric. The production asymmetry, A_P, between Ds+ and Ds- mesons is studied using the ϕπ(+/-) decay mode in a data sample of 1.0/fb collected with the LHCb detector. The difference between π+ and π- detection efficiencies is determined using the ratios of fully reconstructed to partially reconstructed D*(+/-) decays. The overall production asymmetry in the Ds rapidity region 2.0 to 4.5 with transverse momentum larger than 2 GeV is measured to be A_P=(-0.33 +/- 0.22 +/- 0.10)%. This result can constrain models of heavy flavour production.

Measurement of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime

A precise determination of the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime can be used to constrain contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model in the $B_s^0$ meson system. Conventional approaches select $B$ meson decay products that are significantly displaced from the $B$ meson production vertex. As a consequence, $B$ mesons with low decay times are suppressed, introducing a bias to the decay time spectrum which must be corrected. This analysis uses a technique that explicitly avoids a lifetime bias by using a neural network based trigger and event selection. Using 1.0 fb $^{-1}$ of data recorded by the LHCb experiment, the effective $B_s^0 \rightarrow K^+ K^-$ lifetime is measured as $1.455 \pm 0.046 \; \mathrm{(stat.)} \pm 0.006 \; \mathrm{(syst.)} \, \mathrm{ps}.$

Measurement of the effective $B^0_s\rightarrow K^+K^-$ lifetime

A measurement of the effective $B^0_s\rightarrow K^+K^-$ lifetime is presented using approximately $37 pb^{-1}$ of data collected by LHCb during 2010. This quantity can be used to put constraints on contributions from processes beyond the Standard Model in the $B^0_s$ meson system and is determined by two complementary approaches as $τ_{B^0_s\to K^+K^-} = 1.440 \pm 0.096 (stat) \pm 0.008 (syst) \pm 0.003 (model) ps$ .

Measurement of the isospin asymmetry in $B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ decays

The isospin asymmetries of $B \to K^{(*)}μ^+μ^-$ decays and the partial branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ and $B^+ \to K^{*+}μ^+μ^-$ are measured as a function of the di-muon mass squared $q^2$ using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb $^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The $B \to Kμ^+μ^-$ isospin asymmetry integrated over $q^2$ is negative, deviating from zero with over 4 $σ$ significance. The $B \to K^{*}μ^+μ^-$ decay measurements are consistent with the Standard Model prediction of negligible isospin asymmetry. The observation of the decay $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$ is reported with 5.7 $σ$ significance. Assuming that the branching fraction of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ is twice that of $B^0 \to K^0_{\rm\scriptscriptstyle S}μ^+μ^-$ , the branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^0μ^+μ^-$ and $B \to K^{*+}μ^+μ^-$ are found to be ( $0.31^{+0.07}_{-0.06}) \times 10^{-6}$ and ( $1.16\pm0.19) \times 10^{-6}$ , respectively.

Measurement of the polarization amplitudes and triple product asymmetries in the B_s^0 -> phi phi decay

Using 1.0 fb^{-1} of pp collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the LHCb detector, measurements of the polarization amplitudes, strong phase difference and triple product asymmetries in the B_s^0 -> phi phi decay mode are presented. Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma)

The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 -> phi gamma has been measured using 0.37 fb-1 of pp collisions at a centre of mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, collected by the LHCb experiment. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.12 +/- 0.08 ^{+0.06}_{-0.04} ^{+0.09}_{-0.08}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is associated to the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (4.33 +/- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.9 +/- 0.5) x 10^{-5}, which is the most precise measurement to date.

Measurement of the ratio of branching fractions BR(B0 -> K0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) and the direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K0 gamma

The ratio of branching fractions of the radiative B decays B0 -> K*0 gamma and Bs0 phi gamma has been measured using an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 of pp collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV. The value obtained is BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma)/BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) = 1.23 +/- 0.06(stat.) +/- 0.04(syst.) +/- 0.10(fs/fd), where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic uncertainty and the third is associated with the ratio of fragmentation fractions fs/fd. Using the world average value for BR(B0 -> K*0 gamma), the branching fraction BR(Bs0 -> phi gamma) is measured to be (3.5 +/- 0.4) x 10^{-5}. The direct CP asymmetry in B0 -> K*0 gamma decays has also been measured with the same data and found to be A(CP)(B0 -> K*0 gamma) = (0.8 +/- 1.7(stat.) +/- 0.9(syst.))%. Both measurements are the most precise to date and are in agreement with the previous experimental results and theoretical expectations.

Measurement of the ratio of prompt $χ_{c}$ to $J/ψ$ production in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV

The results are in excellent agreement with next-to-leading order non-relativistic expectations and show a significant discrepancy compared with the colour singlet model prediction at leading order, especially in the low $p_{\mathrm T}^{J/ψ}$ region.

Measurement of Upsilon production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV

The production of Upsilon(1S), Upsilon(2S) and Upsilon(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The Upsilon mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode Upsilon -> mu+ mu- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the mu+ mu- invariant mass distributions. The differential production cross-sections times dimuon branching fractions are measured as a function of the Upsilon transverse momentum pT and rapidity y, over the range pT < 15 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. The cross-sections times branching fractions, integrated over these kinematic ranges, are measured to be sigma(pp -> Upsilon(1S) X) x B(Upsilon(1S)->mu+ mu-) = 2.29 {\pm} 0.01 {\pm} 0.10 -0.37 +0.19 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(2S) X) x B(Upsilon(2S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.562 {\pm} 0.007 {\pm} 0.023 -0.092 +0.048 nb, sigma(pp -> Upsilon(3S) X) x B(Upsilon(3S)->mu+ mu-) = 0.283 {\pm} 0.005 {\pm} 0.012 -0.048 +0.025 nb, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the unknown polarisation of the three Upsilon states.

Measurements of the branching fractions and CP asymmetries of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays

A study of B+ to J/psi pi+ and B+ to psi(2S) pi+ decays is performed with data corresponding to 0.37 fb-1 of proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV. Their branching fractions are found to be B(B+ to J/psi pi+) = (3.88 +- 0.11 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5} and B(B+ to psi(2S) pi+) = (2.52 +- 0.26 +- 0.15) x 10^{-5}, where the first uncertainty is related to the statistical size of the sample and the second quantifies systematic effects. The measured CP asymmetries in these modes are ACP(J/psi pi) = 0.005 +- 0.027 +- 0.011 and ACP(psi(2S) pi) = 0.048 +- 0.090 +- 0.011 with no evidence of direct CP violation seen.

Measurements of the branching fractions of the decays $B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm}$ and $B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$

The decay mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{\mp}_{s} K^{\pm} $ allows for one of the theoretically cleanest measurements of the CKM angle $γ$ through the study of time-dependent $\ensuremath{CP}\xspace$ violation. This paper reports a measurement of its branching fraction relative to the Cabibbo-favoured mode $\B^{0}_{s} \to D^{-}_{s} π^{+}$ based on a data sample of 0.37 fb $^{-1}$ proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV collected in 2011 with the LHCb detector. In addition, the ratio of $\ensuremath{\mathrm{B}}\xspace$ meson production fractions $\ensuremath{f_s/f_d}$, determined from semileptonic decays, together with the known branching fraction of the control channel $B^{0} \to D^{-} π^{+}$ , is used to perform an absolute measurement of the branching fractions: $B (\B^0_s \to D^-_s π^+) \;= (2.95 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.17^{\,+\,0.18}_{\,-\,0.22}) \times 10^{-3}$, $B (\B^0_s \to D^\mp_s K^\pm) = (1.90 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13^{\,+\,0.12}_{\,-\,0.14}) \times 10^{-4}\,$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second the experimental systematic uncertainty, and the third the uncertainty due to $f_s/f_d$ .

Monte Carlo approach for hadron azimuthal correlations in high energy proton and nuclear collisions

We use a Monte Carlo approach to study hadron azimuthal angular correlations in high energy proton-proton and central nucleus-nucleus collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) energies at mid-rapidity. We build a hadron event generator that incorporates the production of $2\to 2$ and $2\to 3$ parton processes and their evolution into hadron states. For nucleus-nucleus collisions we include the effect of parton energy loss in the Quark-Gluon Plasma using a modified fragmentation function approach. In the presence of the medium, for the case when three partons are produced in the hard scattering, we analyze the Monte Carlo sample in parton and hadron momentum bins to reconstruct the angular correlations. We characterize this sample by the number of partons that are able to hadronize by fragmentation within the selected bins. In the nuclear environment the model allows hadronization by fragmentation only for partons with momentum above a threshold $p_T^{\tiny{thresh}}=2.4$ GeV. We argue that one should treat properly the effect of those partons with momentum below the threshold, since their interaction with the medium may lead to showers of low momentum hadrons along the direction of motion of the original partons as the medium becomes diluted.

Observation of $J/ψ$ pair production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7 TeV$

The production of $J/ψ$ pairs in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV has been observed using an integrated luminosity of $37.5 pb^{-1}$ collected with the LHCb detector. The production cross-section for pairs with both \jpsi in the rapidity range $2<y^{J/ψ}<4.5$ and transverse momentum $p_{T}^{J/ψ}<10 GeV/c$ is $σ^{J/ψJ/ψ} = 5.1\pm1.0\pm1.1 nb,$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic.

Observation of Bs -> J/ψf'2(1525) in J/ψK+K- final states

The decay Bs -> J/ψK+ K- is investigated using 0.16/fb of data collected with the LHCb detector using 7 TeV pp collisions. Although the J/ψϕ channel is well known, final states at higher K+K- masses have not previously been studied. In the K+K- mass spectrum we observe a significant signal in the f'2(1525) region as well as a non-resonant component. After subtracting the non-resonant component, we find B(Bs->J/ψf'_2(1525))/B(Bs->J/ψϕ)=(26.4 +/- 2.7 +/- 2.4)%.

Observation of CP violation in B+ to DK+ decays

An analysis of B+ to DK+ and B+ to Dpi+ decays is presented where the D meson is reconstructed in the two-body final states: K+pi-, K+K-, pi+pi- and pi+K-. Using 1.0 fb-1 of LHCb data, measurements of several observables are made including the first observation of the suppressed mode B+ to DK+, D to pi+K-. CP violation in B+ to DK+ decays is observed with 5.8 sigma significance.

Observation of excited Lambda_b0 baryons

Using pp collision data corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb detector, two narrow states are observed in the Lambda_b0pi+pi- spectrum with masses 5911.97 +- 0.12(stat) +- 0.02(syst) +- 0.66(Lambda_b0 mass) MeV/c^2 and 5919.77 +- 0.08(stat) +- 0.02(syst) +- 0.66(Lambda_b0 mass) MeV/c^2. The significances of the observations are 5.2 and 10.2 standard deviations, respectively. These states are interpreted as the orbitally-excited Lambda_b0 baryons, Lambda_b*0(5912) and Lambda_b*0(5920).

Observation of the decay B0 -> D0bar K+ K- and evidence for Bs -> D0bar K+ K-

The first observation of the decay B0 -> D0bar K+ K- is reported from an analysis of 0.62 fb-1 of pp collision data collected with the LHCb detector. Its branching fraction is measured relative to that of the topologically similar decay B0 -> D0bar pi+ pi- to be BR(B0 -> D0bar K+ K-)/BR(B0 -> D0bar pi+ pi-) = 0.056+-0.011+-0.007, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The significance of the signal is 5.8 sigma. Evidence, with 3.8 sigma significance, for Bs -> D0bar K+ K- decays is also presented, with a relative branching fraction of BR(Bs -> D0bar K+ K-)/BR(B0 -> D0bar K+ K-) = 0.90+-0.27+-0.20.

Observation of X(3872) production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)= 7 TeV

Using 34.7 pb-1 of data collected with the LHCb detector, the inclusive production of the X(3872) meson in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV is observed for the first time. Candidates are selected in the X(3872) -> J/psi pi+ pi- decay mode, and used to measure sigma(pp -> X(3872) + anything) B(X(3872)-> J/psi pi+ pi-) = 5.4 +- 1.3 (stat) +- 0.8 (syst) nb, where sigma(pp -> X(3872) + anything) is the inclusive production cross-section of X(3872) mesons with rapidity in the range 2.5-4.5 and transverse momentum in the range 5-20 GeV/c. In addition the masses of both the X(3872) and psi(2S) mesons, reconstructed in the J/psi pi+ pi- final state, are measured to be m(X(3872)) = 3871.95 +- 0.48 (stat) +- 0.12 (syst) MeV/c2 and m(psi(2S)) = 3686.12 +- 0.06 (stat) +- 0.10 (syst) MeV/c2

Opposite-side flavour tagging of B mesons at the LHCb experiment

The calibration and performance of the opposite-side flavour tagging algorithms used for the measurements of time-dependent asymmetries at the LHCb experiment are described. The algorithms have been developed using simulated events and optimized and calibrated with B+ -> J/psi K+, B0 -> J/psi K*0 and B0 -> D*- mu+ nu_mu decay modes with 0.37 fb^-1 of data collected in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV during the 2011 physics run. The opposite-side tagging power is determined in the B+ -> J/psi K+ channel to be (2.10 +- 0.08 +- 0.24) %, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.

Search for the lepton number violating decays $B^{+}\to π^- μ^+ μ^+$ and $B^{+}\to K^- μ^+ μ^+$

A search is performed for the lepton number violating decay $B^{+}\to h^- μ^+ μ^+$ , where $h^-$ represents a $K^-$ or a $π^-$ , using data from the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $36pb^{-1}$ . The decay is forbidden in the Standard Model but allowed in models with a Majorana neutrino. No signal is observed in either channel and limits of $B(B^{+} \to K^- μ^+ μ^+) < 5.4\times 10^{-8}$ and $B(B^{+} \to π^- μ^+ μ^+) < 5.8\times 10^{-8}$ are set at the 95% confidence level. These improve the previous best limits by factors of 40 and 30, respectively.

Search for the rare decays Bs -->mumu and Bd -->mumu

A search for the decays Bs-->mumu and Bd-->mumu is performed with about 37 pb^{-1} of pp collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The observed numbers of events are consistent with the background expectations. The resulting upper limits on the branching ratios are BR(Bs-->mumu) < 5.6 x 10^{-8} and BR(Bd-->mumu) <1.5 x 10^{-8} at 95% confidence level.

Search for the X(4140) state in B+ to J/psi phi K+ decays

A search for the X(4140) state in B+ to J/psi phi K+ decays is performed with 0.37 fb-1 of pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment. No evidence for this state is found, in 2.4 sigma disagreement with a measurement by CDF. An upper limit on its production rate is set, BR(B+ to X(4140) K+) BR(X(4140) to J/psi phi) / BR(B+ to J/psi phi K+) < 0.07 at 90% confidence level.

Strong constraints on the rare decays Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu-

A search for Bs -> mu+ mu- and B0 -> mu+ mu- decays is performed using 1.0 fb^-1 of pp collision data collected at \sqrt{s}=7 TeV with the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. For both decays the number of observed events is consistent with expectation from background and Standard Model signal predictions. Upper limits on the branching fractions are determined to be BR(Bs -> mu+ mu-) < 4.5 (3.8) x 10^-9 and BR(B0 -> mu+ mu-) < 1.0 (0.81) x 10^-9 at 95% (90%) confidence level.

Study of $D_{sJ}$ decays to $D^+\KS$ and $D^0K^+$ final states in $pp$ collisions

A study of $D^+\KS$ and $D^0K^+$ final states is performed in a sample of 1.0/fb of $pp$ collision data collected at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV with the \lhcb detector. We confirm the existence of the $D_{s1}^*(2700)^+$ and $D_{sJ}^*(2860)^+$ excited states and measure their masses and widths to be {eqnarray} m(D_{s1}^*(2700)^+) &=& 2709.2 \pm 1.9({stat})\pm\,\,\,4.5({syst}) {MeV}/c^2,\cr Γ(D_{s1}^*(2700)^+) &=& \,\,\,115.8 \pm 7.3({stat}) \pm12.1({syst}) {MeV}/c^2,\cr m(D_{sJ}^*(2860)^+) &=& 2866.1 \pm 1.0({stat}) \pm\,\,\,6.3({syst}) {MeV}/c^2,\cr Γ(D_{sJ}^*(2860)^+) &=& \,\,\,\,\,\,69.9 \pm 3.2({stat}) \pm\,\,\,6.6({syst}) {MeV}/c^2.\cr {eqnarray}

Determination of f_s/f_d for 7 TeV pp collisions and a measurement of the branching fraction of the decay Bd->D-K+

The relative abundance of the three decay modes $B_d \to D^- K^+$ , $B_d \to D^- π^+$ and $B_s \to D_s^- π^+$ produced in 7 TeV $pp$ collisions at the LHC is determined from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb $^{-1}$ . The branching fraction of $B_d \to D^- K^+$ is found to be $\cal B (B_d \to D^- K^+) = (2.01 \pm 0.18^{\textrm{stat}} \pm 0.14^{\textrm{syst}})\times 10^{-4}$ . The ratio of fragmentation fractions \fsfdt is determined through the relative abundance of $B_s \to D_s^- π^+$ to $B_d \to D^- K^+$ and $B_d \to D^-π^+$ , leading to $f_s/f_d = 0.253 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.017 \pm 0.020$ , where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical respectively.

First observation of Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu decays

Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the semileptonic decays Bs -> Ds+ X mu nu and Bs -> D0 K+ X mu nu are detected. Two structures are observed in the D0 K+ mass spectrum at masses consistent with the known D^+_{s1}(2536) and $D^{*+}_{s2}(2573) mesons. The measured branching fractions relative to the total Bs semileptonic rate are B(Bs -> D_{s2}^{*+} X mu nu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (3.3\pm 1.0\pm 0.4)%, and B(Bs -> D_{s1}^+ X munu)/B(Bs -> X mu nu)= (5.4\pm 1.2\pm 0.5)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of the D_{s2}^{*+} state in Bs decays; we also measure its mass and width.

First observation of Bs -> J/psi f0(980) decays

Using data collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, the hadronic decay Bs -> J/psi f0(980) is observed. This CP eigenstate mode could be used to measure mixing-induced CP violation in the B_s system. Using a fit to the pi+ pi- mass spectrum with interfering resonances gives R_{f0/phi} = [Gamma(Bs -> J/psi f0, f0 -> pi+ pi-)]/[Gamma(Bs -> J/psi phi, phi -> K+K-)] = 0.252^{+0.046+0.027}_{-0.032-0.033}, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively.

First observation of the decay $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{0}$ and a measurement of the ratio of branching fractions $\frac{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{0})}{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 ρ^0)}$

The first observation of the decay $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0}$ using $pp$ data collected by the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb $^{-1}$ , is reported. A signal of $34.4 \pm 6.8$ events is obtained and the absence of signal is rejected with a statistical significance of more than nine standard deviations. The $\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0}$ branching fraction is measured relative to that of $\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 ρ^0$ : $\frac{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0_s \to D^0 K^{*0})}{{\cal B}(\bar{B}^0 \to D^0 ρ^0)} = 1.48 \pm 0.34 \pm 0.15 \pm 0.12$ , where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty on the ratio of the $B^0$ and $B^0_s$ hadronisation fractions.

Heavy flavor nuclear modification factor: more baryons than mesons less energy loss

The suppression of the nuclear modification factor for heavy flavor hadrons is usually attributed to the energy loss of heavy quarks propagating in a QCD plasma. Nevertheless it is puzzling that the suppression is as strong as for light flavors. We show that when accounting for the quark momentum shift associated to the opening of the recombination/coalescence channel for hadron production in the plasma, it is not necessary to invoke such strong energy loss. This shift is expressed in terms of an increase of the heavy baryon to meson ratio in nuclear with respect to proton collisions. When this mechanism is included along with a moderate energy loss, data from RHIC and LHC for the nuclear modification factor of electrons coming from heavy flavor decays as well as of charm mesons, can be reasonably described.

Measurement of $V^0$ production ratios in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ and 7\,TeV

The $\barΛ / Λ$ and $\barΛ / K^0_\mathrm{S}$ production ratios are measured by the LHCb detector from $0.3\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions delivered by the LHC at $\sqrt{s} = 0.9$ \,TeV and $1.8\,\mathrm{nb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ \,TeV. Both ratios are presented as a function of transverse momentum, $p_\mathrm{T}$ , and rapidity, $y$ , in the ranges { $0.15 < p_\mathrm{T} < 2.50\,\mathrm{GeV}/c$ } and { $2.0<y<4.5$ }. Results at the two energies are in good agreement as a function of rapidity loss, $Δy = y_\mathrm{beam} - y$ , and are consistent with previous measurements. The ratio $\barΛ / Λ$ , measuring the transport of baryon number from the collision into the detector, is smaller in data than predicted in simulation, particularly at high rapidity. The ratio $\barΛ / K^0_\mathrm{S}$ , measuring the baryon-to-meson suppression in strange quark hadronisation, is significantly larger than expected.

Measurement of charged particle multiplicities in $pp$ collisions at ${\sqrt{s} =7}$ TeV in the forward region

The charged particle production in proton-proton collisions is studied with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of ${\sqrt{s} =7}$ TeV in different intervals of pseudorapidity $η$ . The charged particles are reconstructed close to the interaction region in the vertex detector, which provides high reconstruction efficiency in the $η$ ranges $-2.5<η<-2.0$ and $2.0<η<4.5$ . The data were taken with a minimum bias trigger, only requiring one or more reconstructed tracks in the vertex detector. By selecting an event sample with at least one track with a transverse momentum greater than 1 GeV/c a hard QCD subsample is investigated. Several event generators are compared with the data; none are able to describe fully the multiplicity distributions or the charged particle density distribution as a function of $η$ . In general, the models underestimate the charged particle production.

Measurement of J/psi production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV

The production of J/psi mesons in proton-proton collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/psi production is measured as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the fiducial region 0<pT<14 GeV/c and 2.0<y<4.5. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/psi from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same pT and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2pb-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 +/- 0.04 +/- 1.40 +1.64/-2.20 mub for prompt J/psi production and 1.14 +/- 0.01 +/- 0.16 mub for J/psi from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/psi production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/psi polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

Measurement of mixing and CP violation parameters in two-body charm decays

A study of mixing and indirect CP violation in D0 mesons through the determination of the parameters y_CP and A_Γ is presented. The parameter y_CP is the deviation from unity of the ratio of effective lifetimes measured in D0 decays to the CP eigenstate K+K- with respect to decays to the Cabibbo favoured mode K-π+. The result measured using data collected by LHCb in 2010, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 29 pb^-1, is y_CP = (5.5+/-6.3_{stat}+/-4.1_{syst}) x 10^-3. The parameter A_Γ is the asymmetry of effective lifetimes measured in decays of D0 and anti-D0 mesons to K+K-. The result is A_Γ = (-5.9+/-5.9_{stat}+/-2.1_{syst}) x 10^-3. A data-driven technique is used to correct for lifetime-biasing effects.

Measurement of the inclusive phi cross-section in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV

The cross-section for inclusive phi meson production in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV has been measured with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The differential cross-section is measured as a function of the phi transverse momentum p_T and rapidity y in the region 0.6 < p_T < 5.0 GeV/c and 2.44 < y < 4.06. The cross-section for inclusive phi production in this kinematic range is sigma(pp -> phi X) = 1758 pm 19(stat) ^{+43}_{-14}(syst) pm 182(scale) microbarn, where the first systematic uncertainty depends on the p_T and y region and the second is related to the overall scale. Predictions based on the Pythia 6.4 generator underestimate the cross-section.

Measurements of the Branching fractions for $B_(s) -> D_(s)πππ$ and $Λ_b^0 -> Λ_c^+πππ$

Branching fractions of the decays $H_b\to H_cπ^-π^+π^-$ relative to $H_b\to H_cπ^-$ are presented, where $H_b$ ( $H_c$ ) represents B^0-bar( $D^+$ ), $B^-$ ( $D^0$ ), B_s^0-bar ( $D_s^+$ ) and $Λ_b^0$ ( $Λ_c^+$ ). The measurements are performed with the LHCb detector using 35 ${\rm pb^{-1}}$ of data collected at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV. The ratios of branching fractions are measured to be B(B^0-bar -> D^+π^-π^+π^-)/ B(B^0-bar -> D^+π^-) = 2.38\pm0.11\pm0.21 B(B^- -> D^0π^-π^+π^-) / B(B^- -> D^0π^-) = 1.27\pm0.06\pm0.11 B(B_s^0-bar -> D_s^+π^-π^+π^-) / B(B_s^0-bar -> D_s^+π^-) = 2.01\pm0.37\pm0.20 B(Λ_b^0->Λ_c^+π^-π^+π^-) / B(Λ_b^0 -> Λ_c^+π^-) = 1.43\pm0.16\pm0.13. We also report measurements of partial decay rates of these decays to excited charm hadrons. These results are of comparable or higher precision than existing measurements.

Search for CP violation in $D^{+} \to K^{-}K^{+}π^{+}$ decays

A model-independent search for direct CP violation in the Cabibbo suppressed decay $D^+ \to K^- K^+π^+$ in a sample of approximately 370,000 decays is carried out. The data were collected by the LHCb experiment in 2010 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb $^{-1}$ . The normalized Dalitz plot distributions for $D^+$ and $D^-$ are compared using four different binning schemes that are sensitive to different manifestations of CP violation. No evidence for CP asymmetry is found.

The broad away side of azimuthal correlations: 3 vs 2 final state particles in high energy nuclear collisions

In high energy heavy ion collisions at RHIC there are important aspects of the medium induced dynamics, that are still not well understood. In particular, there is a broadening and even a double hump structure of the away-side peak appearing in azimuthal correlation studies in Au+Au collisions which is absent in p+p collisions at the same energies. These features are already present but suppressed in p+p collisions: 2 to 3 parton processes produce such structures but are suppressed with respect to 2 to 2 processes. We argue that in A+A collisions the different geometry for the trajectories of 3 as opposed to 2 particles in the final state, together with the medium induced energy loss effects on the different cross sections, create a scenario that enhances processes with 3 particles in the final state, which gives on average this double hump structure.

The structure of the strange sea of the proton

In this work we study the strange sea of the proton using a version of the Meson Cloud Model containing both, efective and perturbative degrees of freedom. We construct the $s$ and $\bar{s}$ parton distributions functions at the initial energy scale, $Q_0^2$ , where QCD evolution starts. The initial $s$ and $\bar s$ pdfs depend on a number of parameters which we fix by comparison to parameterizations of the strange sea of the nucleon obtained in a recent global fit to experimental data, allowing for a $s-\bar{s}$ asymmetry. We show that the model describes well the strange sea of the proton and argue that it can be a phenomenologically motivated alternative to the usual input parameterizations used in fits to experimental DIS data.

Three-hadron angular correlations from pQCD at RHIC and LHC

We study three-hadron azimuthal angular correlations in high energy proton-proton and central nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC at mid-rapidity. We use the LO parton matrix elements for 2 \rightarrow 3 processes and include the effect of parton energy loss in the Quark-Gluon Plasma using the modified fragmentation function approach. For the case when the produced hadrons have either same or not too different momenta, we observe two away side peaks at 2pi/3 and 4pi/3. We consider the dependence of the angular correlations on energy loss parameters that have been used in studies of single inclusive hadron production at RHIC. Our results on the angular dependence of the cross section agree well with preliminary data by the PHENIX collaboration. We comment on the possible contribution of 2 \rightarrow 3 processes to di-hadron angular correlations and how a comparison of the two processes may help characterize the plasma further.

Measurement of sigma(pp -> b anti-b X) at \sqrt(s)=7 TeV in the forward region

Decays of b hadrons into final states containing a D0 meson and a muon are used to measure the b anti-b production cross-section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV at the LHC. In the pseudorapidity interval 2 < eta < 6 and integrated over all transverse momenta we find that the average cross-section to produce b-flavoured or anti-b-flavoured hadrons is (75.3 +/- 5.4 +/- 13.0) microbarns.

Measuring asymmetries in flavor asymmetric machines

The LHC offers a unique opportunity to investigate an ample spectra of phenomenous ranging from the Electro-Weak (EW) to the QCD sector of the Standard Model (SM). Among the quantities which can be measured in the LHC experiments are the CP and production asymmetries for several particles in a wide variety of decay modes. In this work we discuss about the interplay between production and CP asymmetries for particles produced in proton-proton interactions and the effects of one on the measurement of the other. This kind of effects are not present in flavor symmetric machines like the Tevatron or $e^+-e^-$ colliders.

Prompt K_short production in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=0.9 TeV

The production of K_short mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 0.9 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The luminosity of the analysed sample is determined using a novel technique, involving measurements of the beam currents, sizes and positions, and is found to be 6.8 +/- 1.0 microbarn^-1. The differential prompt K_short production cross-section is measured as a function of the K_short transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < pT < 1.6 GeV/c and 2.5 < y < 4.0. The data are found to be in reasonable agreement with previous measurements and generator expectations.

Roadmap for selected key measurements of LHCb

Six of the key physics measurements that will be made by the LHCb experiment, concerning CP asymmetries and rare B decays, are discussed in detail. The "road map" towards the precision measurements is presented, including the use of control channels and other techniques to understand the performance of the detector with the first data from the LHC.

Three and two-hadron correlations in \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions

We compare the azimuthal correlations arising from three and two hadron production in high energy proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV, using the leading order matrix elements for two-to-three and two-to-two parton-processes in perturbative QCD. We first compute the two and three hadron production cross sections in mid-rapidity proton-proton collisions. Then we consider Au + Au collisions including parton energy loss using the modified fragmentation function approach. By examining the geometrical paths the hard partons follow through the medium, we show that the two away-side partons produced in two-to-three processes have in average a smaller and a greater path length than the average path length of the away-side parton in two-to-two processes. Therefore there is a large probability that in the former processes one of the particles escapes while the other gets absorbed. This effect leads to an enhancement in the azimuthal correlations of the two-to-three with respect to the two-to-two parton-processes when comparing to the same processes in proton-proton collisions since in average the particle with the shortest path length looses less energy with respect to the away side particle in two-to-two processes. We argue that this phenomenon may be responsible for the shape of the away-side in azimuthal correlations observed in mid-rapidity Au + Au collisions at RHIC.

Pion and kaon parton distribution functions in a meson cloud model

In a model of hadrons in which the hadron wave function at low $Q^2$ is represented by a hadron-like Fock state expansion, we calculate the $π$ and $K$ parton distribution functions by comparing to experimental data. We show that the model gives an accurate description of available data and, in addition, gives a clear prediction of the initial flavors to be considered at the low $Q^2$ scale where perturbative evolution starts

Low $Q^2$ wave-functions of pions and kaons and their parton distribution functions

We study the low $Q^2$ wave-functions of pions and kaons as an expansion in terms of hadron-like Fock state fluctuations. In this formalism, pion and kaon wave-functions are related one another. Consequently, the knowledge of the pion structure allows the determination of parton distributions in kaons. In addition, we show that the intrinsic (low $Q^2$ ) sea of pions and kaons are different due to their different valence quark structure. Finally, we analize the feasibility of a method to extract kaon's parton distribution functions within this approach and compare with available experimental data.

Lambda_c/Lambda_c-bar production asymmetries in pp and pi^- p collisions

We study Lambda_c/Lambda}_c-bar production asymmetries in pp and pi- p collisions using a recently proposed two component model. The model includes heavy baryon production by the usual mechanism of parton fusion and fragmentation plus recombination of valence and sea quarks from the beam and target hadrons. We compare our results with experimental data on asymmetries measured recently.

Liesegang patterns: Effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte

The effect of dissociation of the invading electrolyte on the formation of Liesegang bands is investigated. We find, using organic compounds with known dissociation constants, that the spacing coefficient, 1+p, that characterizes the position of the n-th band as x_n ~ (1+p)^n, decreases with increasing dissociation constant, K_d. Theoretical arguments are developed to explain these experimental findings and to calculate explicitly the K_d dependence of 1+p.

D+- and D0 (anti D0) production asymetries in pion-proton collisions

We use a two-component model to describe the production mechanism of D mesons in pi-p collisions. The model combines the usual QCD processes plus fragmentation and recombination of charm that has been produced by nonperturbative QCD mechanisms. A hard charm component in the pion must be responsible of the particle anti-particle production asymmetries observed.

Production and polarization of $Λ_c^+$ and the charm of the proton

We propose a two-component model involving the parton fusion mechanism and recombination of a $ud$ valence diquark with a sea $c$ -quark of the incident proton to describe $Λ_c^+$ inclusive production in $pp$ collisions. We also study the polarization of the produced $Λ_c^+$ in the framework of the Thomas Precession Model for polarization. We show that a measurement of the $Λ_c$ polarization is a sensitive test of its production mechanism. In particular the intrinsic charm model predicts a positive polarization for the $Λ_c$ within the framework of the Thomas Precession Model, while according to the model presented here the $Λ_c$ polarization should be negative. The measurement of the $Λ_c$ polarization provides a close examination of intrinsic charm Fock states in the proton and give interesting information about the hadroproduction of charm.

We use the recombination and the Thomas Precession Model to obtain a prediction for the $Λ_0$ polarization in the $p+p \to Λ_0+X$ reaction. We study the effect of the recombination function on the $Λ_0$ polarization.
