A template method to measure the $t \bar t$ polarisation

We develop a template method for the measurement of the polarisation of $t \bar t$ pairs produced in hadron collisions. The method would allow to extract the individual fractions of $t_L \bar t_L$, $t_R \bar t_R$, $t_L \bar t_R$ and $t_R \bar t_L$ pairs with a fit to data, where $L,R$ refer to the polarisation along any axis. These polarisation fractions have not been independently measured at present. Secondarily, the method also provides the net polarisation of $t$ and $\bar t$, as well as their spin correlation for arbitrary axes.

Improving $t \bar{t}$ reconstruction in the dilepton channel at future lepton colliders

A future lepton collider, such as the proposed CLIC or ILC, would allow to study top quark properties with unprecedented precision. In this paper, we present a method to reconstruct the $t \bar{t}$ decay in the dilepton channel at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. We derive a simple, closed analytical expression for the neutrino four-momenta as a function of the $W$ boson mass and develop a maximization procedure to find the optimal solution for the reconstruction of the full $t \bar{t}$ event. We show that our method is able to reconstruct neutrino four-momenta with an error of less than $2 \, \%$ in $60 \, \%$ of the times. Finally, we test the performance of this reconstruction method in the calculation of the helicity fractions of the $W$ boson. A precise measurement of these observables could be used to probe new physics effects in the $Wtb$ vertex. We find that, from a large $t \bar{t}$ sample, our reconstruction method allows to calculate these observables with an accuracy better than $1 \, \%$.

The 750 GeV Diphoton Excess as a First Light on Supersymmetry Breaking

One of the most exciting explanations advanced for the recent diphoton excess found by ATLAS and CMS is in terms of sgoldstino decays: a signal of low-energy supersymmetry-breaking scenarios. The sgoldstino, a scalar, couples directly to gluons and photons, with strength related to gaugino masses, that can be of the right magnitude to explain the excess. However, fitting the suggested resonance width, Gamma ~ 45 GeV, is not so easy. In this paper we explore efficient possibilities to enhance the sgoldstino width, via the decay into two Higgses, two Higgsinos and through mixing between the sgoldstino and the Higgs boson. In addition, we present an alternative and more efficient mechanism to generate a mass splitting between the scalar and pseudoscalar components of the sgoldstino, which has been suggested as an interesting alternative explanation to the apparent width of the resonance.

BPS Domain Walls in super Yang-Mills and Landau-Ginzburg models

We study domain walls in two different extensions of super Yang--Mills characterized by the absence of a logarithmic term in their effective superpotential. The models, defined by the usual gaugino condensate and an extra field Y, give different patterns of domain walls despite both leading to the same effective limit for heavy Y, i.e. the Veneziano--Yankielowicz effective Lagrangian of super Yang--Mills. We explain the origin of those differences and also give a physical motivation for introducing the field Y.

Generation of the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe within the Left--Right Symmetric Model

Fermions scattering off first-order phase transition bubbles, in the framework of $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R\otimes U(1)$ models, may generate the Baryon Asymmetry of the Universe (BAU), either at the $LR$-symmetry-breaking scale, or at the weak scale. In the latter case, the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is related to CP violation in the $K_0$--$\bar K_0$ system.

On the Spontaneous CP Breaking in the Higgs Sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We revise a recently proposed mechanism for spontaneous CP breaking at finite temperature in the Higgs sector of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, based on the contribution of squarks, charginos and neutralinos to the one-loop effective potential. We have included plasma effects for all bosons and added the contribution of neutral scalar and charged Higgses. While the former have little effect, the latter provides very strong extra constraints on the parameter space and change drastically the previous results. We find that CP can be spontaneously broken at the critical temperature of the electroweak phase transition without any fine-tuning in the parameter space.
