Is Vtb=1 ?

The strongest constraint on Vtb presently comes from the 3 x 3 unitarity of the CKM matrix, which fixes Vtb to be very close to one. If the unitarity is relaxed, current information from top production at Tevatron still leaves open the possibility that Vtb is sizably smaller than one. In minimal extensions of the standard model with extra heavy quarks, the unitarity constraints are much weaker and the EW precision parameters entail the strongest bounds on Vtb. We discuss the experimental perspectives of discovering and identifying such new physics models at the Tevatron and the LHC, through a precise measurement of Vtb from the single top cross sections and by the study of processes where the extra heavy quarks are produced.

Probing exciton localization in non-polar GaN/AlN Quantum Dots by single dot optical spectroscopy

We present an optical spectroscopy study of non-polar GaN/AlN quantum dots by time-resolved photoluminescence and by microphotoluminescence. Isolated quantum dots exhibit sharp emission lines, with linewidths in the 0.5-2 meV range due to spectral diffusion. Such linewidths are narrow enough to probe the inelastic coupling of acoustic phonons to confined carriers as a function of temperature. This study indicates that the carriers are laterally localized on a scale that is much smaller than the quantum dot size. This conclusion is further confirmed by the analysis of the decay time of the luminescence.

Isospin amplitudes and CP violation in $(B \to Kπ)$ decays

We present a simple isospin invariant parametrization for $(B \to Kπ)$ decay amplitudes which consistently includes CP violation and (quasi-elastic) hadronic final states interactions. We find that the observed $(B \to Kπ)$ decays do not lead to a significant bound on the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle. On the other hand, we claim that a sizeable CP violation asymmetry in $(B^{\pm} \to Kπ^{\pm})$ rates is by no means excluded.
