Unintegrated CCFM parton distributions and transverse momentum of gauge bosons

Transverse momentum distribution of gauge bosons $W^{\pm}$ and $Z^0$ is calculated using unintegrated parton distributions obtained by solving leading order CCFM equation(s) in the impact parameter space. For illustration we compare the results of the fixed-order collinear, soft-gluon resummation and CCFM approaches. A parameter of a nonperturbative form factor is adjusted to the D0 data. In contrast to the collinear approach, the leading order calculation based on the unintegrated CCFM parton distributions generates transverse momentum distributions of gauge bosons, which are almost consistent with experimental data provided the parameter of the nonperturbative form factor is appropriately adjusted. The $W^+$-$W^-$ asymmetry is calculated as a function of the boson rapidity and transverse momentum. Predictions are given for RHIC and LHC.

Geometric scaling and QCD evolution

We study the impact of the QCD DGLAP evolution on the geometric scaling of the gluon distributions which is expected to hold at small x within the saturation models. To this aim we solve the DGLAP evolution equations with the initial conditions provided along the critical line Q^2=Q_s^2(x) where Q_s^2(x) = Q_0^2 x^{-λ}and satisfying geometric scaling. Both fixed and running coupling cases are studied. We show that in the fixed coupling case the geometric scaling at low x is stable against the DGLAP evolution for sufficiently large values of the parameter λand in the double logarithmic approximation of the DGLAP evolution this happens for λ> 4N_cα_s/π. In the running coupling case geometric scaling is found to be approximately preserved at very small x. The residual geometric scaling violation in this case can be approximately factored out and the corresponding form-factor controlling this violation is found.

Two-photon cross-sections from the saturation model

A saturation model for the total gamma-gamma and gamma*-gamma* cross-sections and for the real photon structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) is described. The model is based on a QCD dipole picture of high energy scattering. The two-dipole cross-section is assumed to satisfy the saturation property with the saturation radius taken from the GBW analysis of the gamma*-p interaction at HERA. The model is combined with the QPM and non-pomeron reggeon contributions an it gives a very good description of the data on the gamma-gamma total cross-section, on the photon structure function F_2^gamma(x,Q^2) at low x and on the gamma*-gamma* cross-section. Production of heavy quarks in gamma-gamma collisions is also studied.

Unintegrated gluon distributions in a photon from the CCFM equation in the single loop approximation

The system of CCFM equations for unintegrated parton distributions in a photon is considered in the single loop approximation. We include quarks and non-singular parts of the splitting functions in the corresponding evolution equations. We solve the system of CCFM equations utilising the transverse coordinate representation which diagonalises these equations in the single loop approximation. The results for the unintegrated gluon distributions in a photon are presented and confronted with the approximate form expressing those distributions in terms of the integrated gluon and quark distributions and a suitably defined Sudakov-like form factor.

Gluon shadowing in the low x region probed by the LHC

Starting from an unintegrated gluon distribution which satisfies a `unified' equation which embodies both BFKL and DGLAP behaviour, we compute the shadowing corrections to the integrated gluon in the small x domain that will be accessible at the LHC. The corrections are calculated via the Korchegov equation, which incorporates the leading ln(1/x) triple-Pomeron vertex, and are approximately resummed using a simple Pade technique. We find that the shadowing corrections to xg(x,Q^2) are rather small in the HERA domain, but lead to a factor of 2 suppression in the region x \sim 10^-6, Q^2 \sim 4 GeV^2 accessible to experiments at the LHC.

QCD predictions for spin dependent photonic structure function $g_1^γ(x,Q^2)$ in the low x region of future linear colliders

Spin dependent structure function $g_1^γ(x,Q^2)$ of the polarised photon is analysed within the formalism based upon the unintegrated spin dependent parton distributions incorporating the LO Altarelli-Parisi evolution and the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation at low values of Bjorken parameter x. We analyse the effects of the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation on the behaviour of $g_1^γ(x,Q^2)$ in the low x region which may be accessible in future linear $e^+e^-$ and $eγ$ colliders. Sensitivity of the predictions on the possible nonperturbative gluon content of the polarised photons is analysed. Predictions for spin dependent gluon distribution $Δg^γ (x,Q^2)$ are also given.

The unintegrated gluon distribution from the CCFM equation

The gluon distribution f(x, k_t^2,mu^2), unintegrated over the transverse momentum k_t of the gluon, satisfies the angular-ordered CCFM equation which interlocks the dependence on the scale k_t with the scale μof the probe. We show how, to leading logarithmic accuracy, the equation can be simplified to a single scale problem. In particular we demonstrate how to determine the two-scale unintegrated distribution f(x,k_t^2,mu^2) from knowledge of the integrated gluon obtained from a unified scheme embodying both BFKL and DGLAP evolution.

F_2^gamma at low Q^2 and sigma_{γγ} at high energies

The parametrisation of the photon structure function in the low Q^2 region is formulated. It includes the VMD contribution and the QCD improved parton model component suitably extrapolated to the low Q^2 region. The parametrisation describes reasonably well existing experimental data on sigma_{γγ} for real photons and the low Q^2 data on sigma_{γ^* γ}. Predictions for sigma_{γγ} and for sigma_{γ^* γ} for energies which may be accesssible in future linear colliders are also given.

Predictions for dijet production in DIS using small x dynamics

We study the properties of dijet production in deep inelastic scattering using a unified BFKL/DGLAP framework, which includes important subleading ln (1/x) contributions. We calculate the azimuthal decorrelation between the jets. We compute the cross section for dijet production as a function of Q^2 and the jet transverse momentum, as well as calculate the total dijet rate. We compare the predictions with HERA data.

QCD expectations for the spin structure function $g_1$ in the low $x$ region

The structure function $g_1(x,Q^2)$ is analysed within the formalism based on unintegrated spin dependent parton distributions incorporating the LO Altarelli-Parisi evolution and the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation at low $x$. We quantitatively examine possible role of the latter for the small $x$ behaviour of the structure functions $g_1$ of the nucleon within the region which may be relevant for the possible polarized HERA measurements. We show that while the non-singlet structure function is dominated at low $x$ by ladder diagrams the contribution of the non-ladder bremsstrahlung terms is important for the singlet structure function. Predictions for the polarized gluon distribution $ΔG(x,Q^2)$ at low $x$ are also given.

Diffractive dijet photoproduction as a probe of the off-diagonal gluon distribution

We propose exclusive diffractive dijet photoproduction as an ideal measure of the off-diagonal gluon distribution at high scales. We solve the off-diagonal evolution equations for the gluon and quark singlet over the full kinematic domain. We discuss the nature of the solutions of these equations, which embody both DGLAP and ERBL evolution. We give predictions for the transverse momentum distribution of the jets. In particular we quantify the enhancement arising from the evolution of the off-diagonal parton distributions.

Spin Dependent Structure Function $g_1$ at Low $x$

Theoretical expectations concerning small $x$ behaviour of the spin dependent structure function $g_1$ are summarised. This includes discussion of the Regge pole model predictions and of the double $ln^2(1/x)$ effects implied by perturbative QCD. The quantitative implementation of the latter is described within the unified scheme incorporating both Altarelli-Parisi evolution and the double $ln^2(1/x)$ resummation. The double $ln^2(1/x)$ effects are found to be important in the region of $x$ which can possibly be probed at HERA. Predictions for the polarized gluon distribution $ΔG(x,Q^2)$ at low $x$ are also given.

A unified BFKL and GLAP description of $F_2$ data

We argue that the use of the universal unintegrated gluon distribution and the $k_T$ (or high energy) factorization theorem provides the natural framework for describing observables at small x. We introduce a coupled pair of evolution equations for the unintegrated gluon distribution and the sea quark distribution which incorporate both the resummed leading $ln (1/x)$ BFKL contributions and the resummed leading $ln (Q^2)$ GLAP contributions. We solve these unified equations in the perturbative QCD domain using simple parametic forms of the nonperturbative part of the integrated distributions. With only two (physically motivated) input parameters we find that this $k_T$ factorization approach gives an excellent description of the measurements of $F_2 (x,Q^2)$ at HERA. In this way the unified evolution equations allow us to determine the gluon and sea quark distributions and, moreover, to see the x domain where the resummed $ln (1/x)$ effects become significant. We use $k_T$ factorization to predict the longitudinal structure function $F_L (x,Q^2)$ and the charm component of $F_2 (x,Q^2)$.

Recent Developments in Low x Physics

The QCD expectations for the behaviour of the deep inelastic scattering structure functions in the region of small values of the Bjorken parameter $x$ are summarized. The Balitzkij, Lipatov, Fadin, Kuraev (BFKL) equation which sums the leading powers of $α_s ln(1/x)$ is described and confronted with the "conventional" formalism based on the leading order QCD evolution equations. The small $x$ behaviour of the spin dependent structure function $g_1$ is also discussed. The dedicated measurements of the hadronic final state in deep inelastic scattering at small $x$ probing the QCD pomeron are described. This includes discussion of the deep inelastic scattering accompanied by forward jets as well as production of forward prompt photons and $π^0$-s. Finally the basic facts concerning the deep inelastic diffraction are briefly summarized.

Reggeons in diffractive interactions in deep inelastic scattering at HERA

The "triple-Regge" analysis of subleading Reggeon contributions to the diffractive structure function in DIS at HERA is presented. The recently published data allow to estimate the only free parameter of the analysis related to the ratio of the RRP and PPP couplings. The large value of this ratio is prefered which is in agreement with analyses of soft hadronic interactions. The role of the subleading Reggeons as well as pions for the fast forward neutron production in diffractive processes is estimated. The forward piN state production is also discussed.

Single particle spectra in deep inelastic scattering as a probe of small $x$ dynamics

We study the transverse momentum ($p_T$) spectrum of charged particles produced in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) at small Bjorken $x$ in the central region between the current jet and the proton remnants. We calculate the spectrum at large $p_T$ with the BFKL $\ln (1/x)$ resummation included and then repeat the calculation with it omitted. We find that data favour the former. We normalize our BFKL predictions by comparing with HERA data for DIS containing a forward jet. The shape of the $x$ distribution of DIS + jet data are also well described by BFKL dynamics.

Theoretical issues of small $x$ physics

The perturbative QCD predictions concerning deep inelastic scattering at low $x$ are summarized. The theoretical framework based on the leading log $1/x$ resummation and $k_t$ factorization theorem is described and some recent developments concerning the BFKL equation and its generalization are discussed. The QCD expectations concerning the small $x$ behaviour of the spin dependent structure function $g_1(x,Q^2)$ are briefly summarized and the importance of the double logarithmic terms which sum contributions containing the leading powers of $α_s ln^2(1/x)$ is emphasised. The role of studying final states in deep inelastic scattering for revealing the details of the underlying dynamics at low $x$ is pointed out and some dedicated measurements, like deep inelastic scattering accompanied by an energetic jet, the measurement of the transverse energy flow etc., are briefly discussed.

BFKL predictions at small x from k_T and collinear factorization viewpoints

Hard scattering processes involving hadrons at small $x$ are described by a $k_T$-factorization formula driven by a BFKL gluon. We explore the equivalence of this description to a collinear-factorization approach in which the anomalous dimensions $γ_{gg}$ and $γ_{qg}/α_S$ are expressed as power series in $α_S \log (1/x)$, or to be precise $α_S/ω$ where $ω$ is the moment index. In particular we confront the collinear-factorization expansion with that extracted from the BFKL approach with running coupling included.

THE GLUON DISTRIBUTION AT SMALL x OBTAINED FROM A UNIFIED EVOLUTION EQUATION.

We solve a unified integral equation to obtain the $x, Q_T$ and $Q$ dependence of the gluon distribution of a proton in the small $x$ regime; where $x$ and $Q_T$ are the longitudinal momentum fraction and the transverse momentum of the gluon probed at a scale $Q$. The equation generates a gluon with a steep $x^{- λ}$ behaviour, with $λ\sim 0.5$, and a $Q_T$ distribution which broadens as $x$ decreases. We compare our solutions with, on the one hand, those that we obtain using the double-leading-logarithm approximation to Altarelli-Parisi evolution and, on the other hand, to those that we determine from the BFKL equation.

Implications of Scaling Violations of F2 at HERA for Perturbative QCD

We critically examine the QCD predictions for the $Q^2$ dependence of the electron-proton deep-inelastic structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$ in the small $x$ region, which is being probed at HERA. The standard results based on next-to-leading order Altarelli-Parisi evolution are compared with those that follow from the BFKL equation, which corresponds to the resummation of the leading log$(1/x)$ terms. The effects of parton screening are also quantified. The theoretical predictions are confronted with each other, and with existing data from HERA. (3 Postscript figures included).
