The Phase Induced Amplitude Apodizer and Nuller -- High transmission, high dispersion coronagraphy at 2λ/D

Context. Proxima Cen b is the prime target for the search of life around a nearby exoplanet by characterizing its atmosphere in reflected light. Due to the very high star/companion contrast (<1E-6), High Dispersion Coronagraphy is the most promising technique to perform such a characterization. Aims. With a maximum separation of 37 mas, Proxima b can be observed with a VLT in the visible. It requires a coronagraph providing high contrast (< 1E-4 ) very close from the star (< 2 λ/D ) over a broad spectral range (~30%), with a high transmission of the companion (> 50%). We look for an optimal solution that takes benefit of the properties of single-mode fibers. Methods. We introduce the Phase Induced Amplitude Apodizer and Nuller (PIAAN), a coronagraphic integral field unit, designed to feed a diffraction limited spectrograph. It uses a pupil remapping optics with moderate apodization, combined to a single mode fiber integral field unit. It exploits the properties of single mode fibers to null the star light without reducing the companion coupling. The study focuses on a proper tolerance analysis and proposes a wavefront optimization strategy. A prototype is built to demonstrate its performance. Results. We show that the PIAAN can theoretically provide contrasts of 7E-7 and a transmission of 72% at 2 λ/D over a bandwidth of 30%. A prototype is built and characterized and the proposed wavefront control strategy is also demonstrated in the lab. We reach contrast levels of 3E-5 over the full bandwidth, as expected from the tolerance analysis. Conclusions. We demonstrated the potential of the new PIAAN coronagraph, from simulations to prototype. Its performance will eventually be limited by the XAO capabilities. It is the main coronagraph candidate for the RISTRETTO instrument to observe Proxima Cen b on the VLT and its first technology milestone.

European Strategy for Particle Physics -- Accelerator R&D Roadmap

The 2020 update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics emphasised the importance of an intensified and well-coordinated programme of accelerator R&D, supporting the design and delivery of future particle accelerators in a timely, affordable and sustainable way. This report sets out a roadmap for European accelerator R&D for the next five to ten years, covering five topical areas identified in the Strategy update. The R&D objectives include: improvement of the performance and cost-performance of magnet and radio-frequency acceleration systems; investigations of the potential of laser / plasma acceleration and energy-recovery linac techniques; and development of new concepts for muon beams and muon colliders. The goal of the roadmap is to document the collective view of the field on the next steps for the R&D programme, and to provide the evidence base to support subsequent decisions on prioritisation, resourcing and implementation.

RISTRETTO: coronagraph and AO designs enabling High Dispersion Coronagraphy at 2 lambda/D

RISTRETTO is the evolution of the original idea of coupling the VLT instruments SPHERE and ESPRESSO, aiming at High Dispersion Coronagraphy. RISTRETTO is a visitor instrument that should enable the characterization of the atmospheres of nearby exoplanets in reflected light, by using the technique of high-contrast, high-resolution spectroscopy. Its goal is to observe Prox Cen b and other planets placed at about 35mas from their star, i.e. 2lambda/D at lambda=750nm. The instrument is composed of an extreme adaptive optics, a coronagraphic Integral Field Unit, and a diffraction-limited spectrograph (R=140.000, lambda=620-840 nm). We present the status of our studies regarding the coronagraphic IFU and the XAO system. The first in particular is based on a modified version of the PIAA apodizer, allowing nulling on the first diffraction ring. Our proposed design has the potential to reach > 50% coupling and <1E-4 contrast at 2lambda/D in median seeing conditions.

High-precision $α_s$ measurements from LHC to FCC-ee

This document provides a writeup of all contributions to the workshop on "High precision measurements of $α_s$: From LHC to FCC-ee" held at CERN, Oct. 12--13, 2015. The workshop explored in depth the latest developments on the determination of the QCD coupling $α_s$ from 15 methods where high precision measurements are (or will be) available. Those include low-energy observables: (i) lattice QCD, (ii) pion decay factor, (iii) quarkonia and (iv) $τ$ decays, (v) soft parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, as well as high-energy observables: (vi) global fits of parton distribution functions, (vii) hard parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, (viii) jets in $e^\pm$p DIS and $γ$-p photoproduction, (ix) photon structure function in $γ$-$γ$, (x) event shapes and (xi) jet cross sections in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (xii) W boson and (xiii) Z boson decays, and (xiv) jets and (xv) top-quark cross sections in proton-(anti)proton collisions. The current status of the theoretical and experimental uncertainties associated to each extraction method, the improvements expected from LHC data in the coming years, and future perspectives achievable in $e^+e^-$ collisions at the Future Circular Collider (FCC-ee) with $\cal{O}$(1--100 ab$^{-1}$) integrated luminosities yielding 10$^{12}$ Z bosons and jets, and 10$^{8}$ W bosons and $τ$ leptons, are thoroughly reviewed. The current uncertainty of the (preliminary) 2015 strong coupling world-average value, $α_s(m_Z)$ = 0.1177 $\pm$ 0.0013, is about 1\%. Some participants believed this may be reduced by a factor of three in the near future by including novel high-precision observables, although this opinion was not universally shared. At the FCC-ee facility, a factor of ten reduction in the $α_s$ uncertainty should be possible, mostly thanks to the huge Z and W data samples available.
