Broadened profiles of Diffuse Interstellar Bands

The paper describes profile broadening and peak wavelength variation of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) measured for 46 lines of sight, probably caused by physical properties of intervening clouds. Full width at half maximum of four studied diffuse bands (5780, 5797, 6196 and 6614 Å) demonstrate strong variability sometimes doubling the features' width. Despite the high magnitude of the effect, our current analysis is restricted to the strongest diffuse bands because the weaker ones require a much higher S/N ratio. The profile broadening in the studied DIBs moves the profile's centers towards longer wavelengths, probably due to the excitation of higher levels of the P branch of the unknown molecular carrier. Moreover, diffuse bands are broader in clouds with abundantly populated vibrationally excited states of the hydrogen molecules, i.e. DIB's broadening correlates with the rotational temperature estimated on H$_2$ $ν$=2 vibrational level. However, objects demonstrating extremely broadened profiles of DIBs are scarce. The extreme peculiarity of DIBs' profiles was detected in Herschel~36. Here we show the gradual growths of the widths of diffuse bands, confirmed in spectra from different instruments.

Central wavelengths and profile shapes of diffuse interstellar bands vs. physical parameters of intervening clouds

This paper tries to establish whether there are variations of the central wavelengths or the profile shapes of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) and whether these variations are caused by different physical parameters of translucent clouds. For this purpose we used spectra of two stars seen through two different single clouds: HD34078 (AE Aur) \& HD73882 acquired using two different instruments: the MIKE spectrograph, fed with the 6.5 m Magellan telescope at Las Campanas Observatory, and the UVES, fed with the 8 m Kueyen telescope at the Paranal observatory. The wavelength displacements of the DIBs at 6196, 6203, 6376, 6379 and 6614 Å with respect to the well known interstellar atomic and molecular lines (K{\sc i} and CH) have been measured. The mentioned shift is seemingly absent in the DIBs at 4726, 4964, 4763, and 4780 Å. In addition the considered profiles may show (in HD34078) extended red wings. The observed phenomena are likely related to physical parameters of intervening clouds (rotational temperatures of molecular species) and may help in the identification of the DIB carriers.

Dark Dust and single-cloud sightlines in the ISM

The precise characteristics of clouds and the nature of dust in the diffuse interstellar medium can only be extracted by inspecting the rare cases of single-cloud sightlines. In our nomenclature such objects are identified by interstellar lines, such as K I, that show at a resolving power of $λ/Δλ\sim 75,000$ one dominating Doppler component that accounts for more than half of the observed column density. We searched for such sightlines using high-resolution spectroscopy towards reddened OB stars for which far-UV extinction curves are known. We compiled a sample of 186 spectra, 100 of which were obtained specifically for this project with UVES. In our sample we identified 65 single-cloud sightlines, about half of which were previously unknown. We used the CH/CH$^+$ line ratio of our targets to establish whether the sightlines are dominated by warm or cold clouds. We found that CN is detected in all cold (CH/CH$^+ >1$) clouds, but is frequently absent in warm clouds. We inspected the WISE ($3-22\, μ$m) observed emission morphology around our sightlines and excluded a circumstellar nature for the observed dust extinction. We found that most sightlines are dominated by cold clouds that are located far away from the heating source. For 132 stars, we derived the spectral type and the associated spectral type-luminosity distance. We also applied the interstellar Ca II distance scale, and compared these two distance estimates with GAIA parallaxes. These distance estimates scatter by 40%. By comparing spectral type-luminosity distances with those of GAIA, we detected a hidden dust component that amounts to a few mag of extinction for eight sightlines. This Dark Dust is populated by $\ge 1 μ$m large grains and predominately appears in the field of the cold interstellar medium.

Survey of very broad Diffuse Interstellar Bands

This paper considers a very special set of a few interstellar features --- broad diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) at 4430, 4882, 5450, 5779 and 6175 ÅÅ. The set is small, and measurements of equivalent widths of these DIBs are challenging because of severe stellar, interstellar, and sometimes, also telluric contaminations inside their broad profiles. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that they do correlate pretty tightly (DIBs 4882 and 5450 to a lesser extent though) with other narrower diffuse bands, as well as with the color excess E(B$-$V). The studied broad DIBs correlate well with both interstellar molecule CH and interstellar K{\sc i}, i.e. it is hardly possible to verify whether the environments, facilitating the formation of very broad DIB carriers, are dominated by either molecular or atomic gas as both these species likely occupy the same volume.

Redshifted Diffuse Interstellar Bands in Orion OB1 association

The wavelength displacement of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands at 4502, 5705, 5780, 6284, and 7224 Å with respect to the well known, narrow atomic/molecular interstellar lines (of Ca{\sc ii} and Na{\sc i}) have been measured in the spectra of the 2 Orion Trapezium stars HD 37022 and HD 37020, using the HARPS\textendash N spectrograph, fed with the 3.5 m Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, and the BOES spectrograph, fed with the 1.8m Korean telescope. The red shift is $\sim$25 km/s for all these DIBs. We discuss the various possible origins of this very peculiar wavelength shift in the light of the particular physical conditions in the Orion Trapezium. The above mentioned shift is seemingly absent in the DIBs at 6196 and 6993 Å.

Carriers of 4964 and 6196 diffuse interstellar bands and environments dominated by either CH or CH$^{+}$ molecules

The analysis of radial velocities of interstellar spectral features: CH, CH$^{+}$ as well as 4964 and 6196 diffuse interstellar bands, seen in spectra of HD 151932 and 152233, suggests that carrier of the former is spatially correlated with CH while that of the latter -- with CH$^{+}$. A further analysis, done in this paper and based on the sample of 106 reddened OB stars, partly confirms this suggestion, showing that the CH column density correlates indeed much better with the equivalent width of the 4964 DIB than with that of the 6196 DIB. However, the strengths of the 6196 DIB correlate only marginally better with CH$^+$ than with CH.

Consistent system of oscillator strengths of A$^{2}Δ$ -- X$^{2}Π$ (0, 0) and B$^{2}Σ^{-}$ -- X$^{2}Π$ (0, 0) bands of CH molecule

Detailed analysis of intensity ratios of unsaturated methylidyne (CH) A--X and B--X bands suggests consistency of the recently published oscillator strengths of A$^{2}Δ$ -- X$^{2}Π$ (0, 0) -- 4300 Å and B$^{2}Σ^{-}$ -- X$^{2}Π$ (0, 0) -- (3878, 3886 and 3890 Å) bands (ie. 506, 107, 320 and 213$\times$10$^{-5}$ respectively). This result is based on extremely high S/N ratio spectra of 45 stars, acquired with three high-resolution spectrographs, situated in Chile: ESO LaSilla (HARPS), ESO Paranal (UVES) and Las Campanas (MIKE) and MAESTRO instrument situated in Northern Caucasus (Russia). The calculated methylidyne column densities, obtained using the consistent system of the oscillator strengths toward the observed targets, are given as well. We verify oscillator strengths of the CH+ A-X (0, 0) and (0, 1) bands at 4232 Å and 3957 Å equal to 545 and 342$\times$10$^{-5}$ respectively. We also confirm the lack of correlation between abundances of neutral CH and CH$^{+}$ which the fact demonstrates that they are originated in different environments.

Detection of vibronic bands of C$_3$ in a translucent cloud towards HD 169454

We report the detection of eight vibronic bands of C$_3$, seven of which have been hitherto unobserved in astrophysical objects, in the translucent cloud towards HD~169454. Four of these bands are also found towards two additional objects: HD~73882 and HD~154368. Very high signal-to-noise ratio ($\sim$1000 and higher) and high resolving power ($R=80,000$) UVES-VLT spectra (Paranal, Chile) allow for detecting novel spectral features of C$_3$, even revealing weak perturbed features in the strongest bands. The work presented here provides the most complete spectroscopic survey of the so far largest carbon chain detected in translucent interstellar clouds. High-quality laboratory spectra of C$_3$ are measured using cavity ring-down absorption spectroscopy in a supersonically expanding hydrocarbon plasma, to support the analysis of the identified bands towards HD~169454. A column density of N(C$_3$) = $(6.6 \pm 0.2) \times 10^{12}$ cm$^{-2}$ is inferred and the excitation of the molecule exhibits two temperature components; $T_{exc}= 22 \pm 1$ K for the low-$J$ states and $T_{exc}= 187 \pm 25$ K for the high-$J$ tail. The rotational excitation of C$_3$ is reasonably well explained by models involving a mechanism including inelastic collisions, formation and destruction of the molecule, and radiative pumping in the far-infrared. These models yield gas kinetic temperatures comparable to those found for $T_{exc}$. The assignment of spectral features in the UV-blue range 3793-4054 Å may be of relevance for future studies aiming at unravelling spectra to identify interstellar molecules associated with the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs).

Interstellar extinction and abundances of simple diatomic molecules

We analyze mutual relations between interstellar extinction E(B-V) and column densities of diatomic molecules such as CN, CH and CH cation observed along translucent sightlines. Observational material acquired using five echelle spectrographs, situated in both northern and southern hemispheres, was used in this study. While column densities of CH, CH+ correlate reasonably tightly with E(B-V) the similar relation built for CN shows a large scatter. This result suggests that CH and CH+ molecules are quite well spatially correlated to interstellar dust while CN requires another conditions to be formed. The CH molecule is closely related to H_2 as it was demonstrated already; the fact is interesting since H_2 is believed to be formed on grain surfaces rather than in the gas phase.

Excitation and Abundance of C3 in star forming cores:Herschel/HIFI observations of the sight-lines to W31C and W49N

We present spectrally resolved observations of triatomic carbon (C3) in several ro-vibrational transitions between the vibrational ground state and the low-energy nu2 bending mode at frequencies between 1654-1897 GHz along the sight-lines to the submillimeter continuum sources W31C and W49N, using Herschel's HIFI instrument. We detect C3 in absorption arising from the warm envelope surrounding the hot core, as indicated by the velocity peak position and shape of the line profile. The sensitivity does not allow to detect C3 absorption due to diffuse foreground clouds. From the column densities of the rotational levels in the vibrational ground state probed by the absorption we derive a rotation temperature (T_rot) of ~50--70 K, which is a good measure of the kinetic temperature of the absorbing gas, as radiative transitions within the vibrational ground state are forbidden. It is also in good agreement with the dust temperatures for W31C and W49N. Applying the partition function correction based on the derived T_rot, we get column densities N(C3) ~7-9x10^{14} cm^{-2} and abundance x(C3)~10^{-8} with respect to H2. For W31C, using a radiative transfer model including far-infrared pumping by the dust continuum and a temperature gradient within the source along the line of sight we find that a model with x(C3)=10^{-8}, T_kin=30-50 K, N(C3)=1.5 10^{15} cm^{-2} fits the observations reasonably well and provides parameters in very good agreement with the simple excitation analysis.

Herschel/HIFI observations of interstellar OH+ and H2O+ towards W49N: a probe of diffuse clouds with a small molecular fraction

We report the detection of absorption by interstellar hydroxyl cations and water cations, along the sight-line to the bright continuum source W49N. We have used Herschel's HIFI instrument, in dual beam switch mode, to observe the 972 GHz N = 1 - 0 transition of OH+ and the 1115 GHz 1(11) - 0(00) transition of ortho-H2O+. The resultant spectra show absorption by ortho-H2O+, and strong absorption by OH+, in foreground material at velocities in the range 0 to 70 km/s with respect to the local standard of rest. The inferred OH+/H2O+ abundance ratio ranges from ~ 3 to ~ 15, implying that the observed OH+ arises in clouds of small molecular fraction, in the 2 - 8% range. This conclusion is confirmed by the distribution of OH+ and H2O+ in Doppler velocity space, which is similar to that of atomic hydrogen, as observed by means of 21 cm absorption measurements, and dissimilar from that typical of other molecular tracers. The observed OH+/H abundance ratio of a few E-8 suggests a cosmic ray ionization rate for atomic hydrogen of (0.6 - 2.4) E-16 s-1, in good agreement with estimates inferred previously for diffuse clouds in the Galactic disk from observations of interstellar H3+ and other species.

The relation between column densities of interstellar OH and CH molecules

We present a new, close relation between column densities of OH and CH molecules based on 16 translucent sightlines (six of them new) and confirm the theoretical oscillator strengths of the OH A--X transitions at 3078 and 3082 Å(0.00105, 0.000648) and CH B--X transitions at 3886 and 3890 Å, (0.00320, 0.00210), respectively. We also report no difference between observed and previously modelled abundances of the OH molecule.
