On the Hilbert-Samuel coefficients of Frobenius powers of an ideal

We provide suitable conditions under which the asymptotic limit of the Hilbert-Samuel coefficients of the Frobenius powers of an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal exists in a Noetherian local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$ with prime characteristic $p>0.$ This, in turn, gives an expression of the Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of powers of the ideal. We also prove that for a face ring $R$ of a simplicial complex and an ideal $J$ generated by pure powers of the variables, the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function $\ell(R/(J^{[q]})^k)$ is a polynomial for all $q,k$ and also give an expression of the generalized Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of powers of $J$ in terms of Hilbert-Samuel multiplicity of $J.$ We conclude by giving a counter-example to a conjecture proposed by I. Smirnov which connects the stability of an ideal with the asymptotic limit of the first Hilbert coefficient of the Frobenius power of the ideal.

Generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of the Rees algebra of the face ring of a simplicial complex

Let $R$ be the face ring of a simplicial complex of dimension $d-1$ and ${\mathcal R}(\mathfrak{n})$ be the Rees algebra of the maximal homogeneous ideal $\mathfrak{n}$ of $R.$ We show that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function $HK(s)=\ell({\mathcal R}(\mathfrak n)/(\mathfrak n, \mathfrak n t)^{[s]})$ is given by a polynomial for all large $s.$ We calculate it in many examples and also provide a Macaulay2 code for computing $HK(s).$

Hilbert-Kunz function and Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity of some ideals of the Rees algebra

We prove that the Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)$ of the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$, where $I$ is an $\mathfrak{m}$-primary ideal of a $1$-dimensional local ring $(R,\mathfrak{m})$, is a quasi-polynomial in $e$, for large $e.$ For $s \in \mathbb{N}$, we calculate the Hilbert-Samuel function of the $R$-module $I^{[s]}$ and obtain an explicit description of the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function of the ideal $(I,It)\mathcal{R}(I)$ when $I$ is a parameter ideal in a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension $d \geq 2$, proving that the generalized Hilbert-Kunz function is a piecewise polynomial in this case.

Interaction between two modes of field mediated by two quantum dots in a photonic crystal cavity

We show unusual cooperative two-photon resonance between two-modes of field inside a photonic crystal cavity. The two-photon resonance occurs when two off resonant quantum dots emit one photon in each cavity mode and de-excite simultaneously. In the presence of phonon coupling the conditions for two-photon resonance change significantly. Using such two-photon two-mode interaction we propose to generate entangled state of two qutrits. The basis of a qutrit are formed by the state of the cavity mode containing $0$, $1$ and $2$ photons. We also discuss effect of phonon coupling on negativity of the generated entangled state.

Tight Closure of powers of ideals and tight Hilbert polynomials

Let $(R,\mathfrak m)$ be an analytically unramified local ring of positive prime characteristic $p.$ For an ideal $I$, let $I^*$ denote its tight closure. We introduce the tight Hilbert function $H^*_I(n)=\ell(R/(I^n)^*)$ and the corresponding tight Hilbert polynomial $P_I^*(n)$ where $I$ is an $\mathfrak m$-primary ideal. It is proved that $F$-rationality can be detected by the vanishing of the first coefficient of $P_I^*(n).$ We find the tight Hilbert polynomial of certain parameter ideals in hypersurface rings and Stanley-Reisner rings of simplicial complexes.

Local cohomology of multi-Rees algebras, Joint reduction numbers and product of complete ideals

We find conditions on the local cohomology modules of multi-Rees algebras of admissible filtrations which enable us to predict joint reduction numbers. As a consequence we are able to prove a generalisation of a result of Reid-Roberts-Vitulli in the setting of analytically unramified local rings for completeness of power products of complete ideals.

Postulation and reduction vectors of multigraded filtrations of ideals

We study relationship between postulation and reduction vectors of admissible multigraded filtrations $\mathcal F= \{\mathcal F (\underline n)\}_{\underline n\in\mathbb Z^s}$ of ideals in Cohen-Macaulay local rings of dimension at most two. This is enabled by a suitable generalisation of the Kirby-Mehran Complex. An analysis of its homology leads to an analogue of Huneke's Fundamental Lemma which plays a crucial role in our investigations. We also clarify the relationship between the Cohen-Macaulay property of the multigraded Rees algebra of $\mathcal F$ and reduction vectors with respect to complete reductions of $\mathcal F.$

Variations on the Grothendieck-Serre Formula for Hilbert functions and their applications

In this expository paper we present proofs of Grothendieck-Serre Formula for multi-graded algebras and Rees algebras for admissible multi-graded filtrations. As applications, we derive formulas of Sally for postulation number of admissible filtrations and Hilbert coefficients. We also discuss a partial solution of Itoh's conjecture by Kummini and Masuti. We present an alternate proof of Huneke-Ooishi Theorem and a generalisation for multi-graded filtrations.

Local Cohomology of Multi-Rees Algebras with Applications to Joint Reductions and Complete Ideals

In this paper, we obtain a generalization, in dimension $3$, of a theorem of David Rees about joint reductions of the bigraded filtration $\{ \overline{I^rJ^s}\}$ of complete ${\mathfrak m}$-primary ideals and vanishing of the second normal Hilbert coefficient $\overline{e}_2(IJ)$ where $R$ is a two-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified local ring with maximal ideal $\mathfrak m.$ This generalization is obtained as a consequence of a formula for the third local cohomology module of the extended Rees algebras of the $\mathbb Z^3$-graded filtration $\{\overline{I^rJ^sK^t}\}$ with support in the ideal $(x_1t_1,x_2t_2,x_3t_3)$ where $(x_1,x_2,x_3)$ is a good joint reduction of $\{\overline{I^rJ^sK^t}\}.$

Local Cohomology of Bigraded Rees Algebras and Normal Hilbert Coefficients

Let $(R,\m)$ be an analytically unramified Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension 2 with infinite residue field and $\ov{I}$ be the integral closure of an ideal $I$ in $R$. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for $\ov{I^{r+1}J^{s+1}}=a\ov{I^rJ^{s+1}}+b\ov{I^{r+1}J^s}$ to hold ${for all}r \geq r_0{and}s \geq s_0$ in terms of vanishing of $[H^2_{(at_1,bt_2)}(\ov{\mathcal{R}^\prime}(I,J))]_{(r_0,s_0)}$, where $a \in I,b \in J$ is a good joint reduction of the filtration $\{\ov{I^rJ^s}\}.$ This is used to derive a theorem due to Rees on normal joint reduction number zero. The vanishing of $\ov{e}_2(IJ)$ is shown to be equivalent to Cohen-Macaulayness of $\ov{\mathcal{R}}(I,J)$.

Normal Hilbert Polynomials : A survey

We survey some of the major results about normal Hilbert polynomials of ideals. We discuss a formula due to Lipman for complete ideals in regular local rings of dimension two, theorems of Huneke, Itoh, Huckaba, Marley and Rees in Cohen-Macaulay analytically unramified local rings. We also discuss recent works of Goto-Hong-Mandal and Mandal-Singh-Verma concerning the positivity of the first coefficient of the normal Hilbert polynomial in unmixed analytically unramified local rings. Results of Moral{é}s and Villarreal linking normal Hilbert polynomial of monomial ideals with Ehrhart polynomials of polytopes are also presented.

On the Chern number of $I$-admissible filtrations of ideals

Let $I$ be an $\m$-primary ideal of a Noetherian local ring $(R, \m)$ of positive dimension. The coefficient $e_1(\mathcal I)$ of the Hilbert polynomial of an $I$-admissible filtration $\mathcal I$ is called the Chern number of $\mathcal I$. A formula for the Chern number has been derived involving Euler characteristic of subcomplexes of a Koszul complex. Specific formulas for the Chern number have been given in local rings of dimension at most two. These have been used to provide new and unified proofs of several results about $e_1(\mathcal I)$.

On some cconjectures about the Chern numbers of filtrations

Let I be an m-primary ideal of a Noetherian local ring (R,m) of positive dimension. The coefficient $e_1(A)$ of the Hilbert polynomial of an I-admissible filtration A is called the Chern number of A. The Positivity Conjecture of Vasconcelos for the Chern number of the integral closure filtration ${\bar{I^n}}$ is proved for a 2-dimensional complete local domain and more generally for any analytically unramified local ring R whose integral closure in its total ring of fractions is Cohen-Macaulay as an R-module. It is proved that if I is a parameter ideal then the Chern number of the I-adic filtration is non-negative. Several other results on the Chern number of the integral closure filtration are established, especially in the case when R is not necessarily Cohen-Macaulay.
