Mean Field and the Single Homopolymer

We develop a statistical model for a confined chain molecule based on a monomer grand canonical ensemble. The molecule is subject to an external chemical potential, a backbone interaction, and an attractive interaction between all monomers. Using a Gaussian variable formalism and a mean field approximation, we analytically derive a minimum principle from which we can obtain relevant physical quantities, such as the monomer density, and we explore the limit in which the chain is subject to a tight confinement. Through a numerical implementation of the minimization process we show how we can obtain density profiles in three dimensions for arbitraty potentials, and we test the limits of validity of the theory.

Universal behavior of quantum Green's functions

We consider a general one-particle Hamiltonian H = - Δ_r + u(r) defined in a d-dimensional domain. The object of interest is the time-independent Green function G_z(r,r') = < r | (z-H)^{-1} | r' >. Recently, in one dimension (1D), the Green's function problem was solved explicitly in inverse form, with diagonal elements of Green's function as prescribed variables. The first aim of this paper is to extract from the 1D inverse solution such information about Green's function which cannot be deduced directly from its definition. Among others, this information involves universal, i.e. u(r)-independent, behavior of Green's function close to the domain boundary. The second aim is to extend the inverse formalism to higher dimensions, especially to 3D, and to derive the universal form of Green's function for various shapes of the confining domain boundary.

Stiff polymer in monomer ensemble

We make use of the previously developed formalism for a monomer ensemble and include angular dependence of the segments of the polymer chains thus described. In particular we show how to deal with stiffness when the polymer chain is confined to certain regions. We investigate the stiffness from the perspectives of a differential equation, integral equations, or recursive relations for both continuum and lattice models. Exact analytical solutions are presented for two cases, whereas numerical results are shown for a third case.
