First measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay

This Letter reports the first measurement of high-energy reactor antineutrinos at Daya Bay, with nearly 9000 inverse beta decay candidates in the prompt energy region of 8-12~MeV observed over 1958 days of data collection. A multivariate analysis is used to separate 2500 signal events from background statistically. The hypothesis of no reactor antineutrinos with neutrino energy above 10~MeV is rejected with a significance of 6.2 standard deviations. A 29\% antineutrino flux deficit in the prompt energy region of 8-11~MeV is observed compared to a recent model prediction. We provide the unfolded antineutrino spectrum above 7 MeV as a data-based reference for other experiments. This result provides the first direct observation of the production of antineutrinos from several high-$Q_β$ isotopes in commercial reactors.

Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of $^{235}$U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the $^{235}$U spectral shape to about 3\%. The ${}^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the $^{235}$U and $^{239}$Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

Observation of the $π^2σ^2$-bond linear-chain molecular structure in $^{16}$C

Measurements of the $^2$H($^{16}$C,$^{16}$C$^{*}$$\rightarrow^4$He+$^{12}$Be or $^6$He+$^{10}$Be)$^2$H inelastic excitation and cluster-decay reactions have been carried out at a beam energy of about 23.5 MeV/u. A specially designed detection system, including one multi-layer silicon-strip telescope at around zero degrees, has allowed the high-efficiency three-fold coincident detection and therefore the event-by-event determination of the energy of the unstable nucleus beam. The decay paths from the $^{16}$C resonances to various states of the final $^{10}$Be or $^{12}$Be nucleus are recognized thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra. The reconstructed resonances at 16.5(1), 17.3(2), 19.4(1) and 21.6(2) MeV are assigned as the $0^+$, $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ members, respectively, of the positive-parity $(3/2_π^-)^2(1/2_σ^-)^2$-bond linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C, based on the angular correlation analysis for the 16.5 MeV state and the excellent agreement of decay patterns between the measurements and theoretical predictions. Moreover, another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2(1) MeV which decays almost exclusively to the $\sim$6 MeV states of $^{10}$Be, in line with the newly predicted pure $σ$-bond linear-chain configuration.

Local spiral structure based on the Gaia EDR3 parallaxes

Context. The astrometric satellite Gaia is expected to significantly increase our knowledge as to the properties of the Milky Way. The Gaia Early Data Release 3 (Gaia EDR3) provides the most precise parallaxes for many OB stars, which can be used to delineate the Galactic spiral structure. Aims. We investigate the local spiral structure with the largest sample of spectroscopically confirmed young OB stars available to date, and we compare it with what was traced by the parallax measurements of masers. Methods. A sample consisting of three different groups of massive young stars, including O-B2 stars, O-B0 stars and O-type stars with parallax accuracies better than 10% was compiled and used in our analysis. Results. The local spiral structures in all four Galactic quadrants within $\approx$5 kpc of the Sun are clearly delineated in detail. The revealed Galactic spiral pattern outlines a clear sketch of nearby spiral arms, especially in the third and fourth quadrants where the maser parallax data are still absent. These O-type stars densify and extend the spiral structure constructed by using the Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) maser data alone. The clumped distribution of O-type stars also indicates that the Galaxy spiral structure is inhomogeneous.

Trigonometric Parallaxes of Four Star-forming Regions in the Distant Inner Galaxy

We have measured trigonometric parallaxes for four water masers associated with distant massive young stars in the inner regions of the Galaxy using the VLBA as part of the BeSSeL Survey. G026.50$+$0.28. is located at the near end of the Galactic bar, perhaps at the origin of the Norma spiral arm. G020.77$-$0.05 is in the Galactic Center region and is likely associated with a far-side extension of the Scutum arm. G019.60$-$0.23 and G020.08$-$0.13 are likely associated and lie well past the Galactic Center. These sources appear to be in the Sagittarius spiral arm, but an association with the Perseus arm cannot be ruled out.

Improved Constraints on Sterile Neutrino Mixing from Disappearance Searches in the MINOS, MINOS+, Daya Bay, and Bugey-3 Experiments

Searches for electron antineutrino, muon neutrino, and muon antineutrino disappearance driven by sterile neutrino mixing have been carried out by the Daya Bay and MINOS+ collaborations. This Letter presents the combined results of these searches, along with exclusion results from the Bugey-3 reactor experiment, framed in a minimally extended four-neutrino scenario. Significantly improved constraints on the $θ_{μe}$ mixing angle are derived that constitute the most stringent limits to date over five orders of magnitude in the sterile mass-squared splitting $Δm^2_{41}$, excluding the 90% C.L. sterile-neutrino parameter space allowed by the LSND and MiniBooNE observations at 90% CL$_s$ for $Δm^2_{41}<5\,$eV$^2$.Furthermore, the LSND and MiniBooNE 99% C.L. allowed regions are excluded at 99% CL$_s$ for $Δm^2_{41}$ $<$ 1.2 eV$^2$.

Optimization of the JUNO liquid scintillator composition using a Daya Bay antineutrino detector

To maximize the light yield of the liquid scintillator (LS) for the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 t LS sample was produced in a pilot plant at Daya Bay. The optical properties of the new LS in various compositions were studied by replacing the gadolinium-loaded LS in one antineutrino detector. The concentrations of the fluor, PPO, and the wavelength shifter, bis-MSB, were increased in 12 steps from 0.5 g/L and <0.01 mg/L to 4 g/L and 13 mg/L, respectively. The numbers of total detected photoelectrons suggest that, with the optically purified solvent, the bis-MSB concentration does not need to be more than 4 mg/L. To bridge the one order of magnitude in the detector size difference between Daya Bay and JUNO, the Daya Bay data were used to tune the parameters of a newly developed optical model. Then, the model and tuned parameters were used in the JUNO simulation. This enabled to determine the optimal composition for the JUNO LS: purified solvent LAB with 2.5 g/L PPO, and 1 to 4 mg/L bis-MSB.

Positive-parity linear-chain molecular band in $^{16}$C

An inelastic excitation and cluster-decay experiment $\rm {^2H}(^{16}C,~{^{4}He}+{^{12}Be}~or~{^{6}He}+{^{10}Be}){^2H}$ was carried out to investigate the linear-chain clustering structure in neutron-rich $\rm {^{16}C}$. For the first time, decay-paths from the $\rm {^{16}C}$ resonances to various states of the final nuclei were determined, thanks to the well-resolved $Q$-value spectra obtained from the three-fold coincident measurement. The close-threshold resonance at 16.5 MeV is assigned as the ${J^π}={0^+}$ band head of the predicted positive-parity linear-chain molecular band with ${(3/2_π^-)^2}{(1/2_σ^-)^2}$ configuration, according to the associated angular correlation and decay analysis. Other members of this band were found at 17.3, 19.4, and 21.6 MeV based on their selective decay properties, being consistent with the theoretical predictions. Another intriguing high-lying state was observed at 27.2 MeV which decays almost exclusively to $\rm {^{6}He}+{^{10}Be{(\sim6~ MeV)}}$ final channel, corresponding well to another predicted linear-chain structure with the pure $σ$-bond configuration.

ON the Nature of the Local Spiral Arm of the Milky Way

Trigonometric parallax measurements of nine water masers associated with the Local arm of the Milky Way were carried out as part of the BeSSeL Survey using the VLBA. When combined with 21 other parallax measurements from the literature, the data allow us to study the distribution and 3-dimensional motions of star forming regions in the spiral arm over the entire northern sky. Our results suggest that the Local arm does not have the large pitch angle characteristic of a short spur. Instead its active star formation, overall length (>5 kpc), and shallow pitch angle (~10 degrees) suggest that it is more like the adjacent Perseus and Sagittarius arms; perhaps it is a branch of one of these arms. Contrary to previous results, we find the Local arm to be closer to the Perseus than to the Sagittarius arm, suggesting that a branching from the former may be more likely. An average peculiar motion of near-zero toward both the Galactic center and north Galactic pole, and counter rotation of ~ 5 km/s were observed, indicating that the Local arm has similar kinematic properties as found for other major spiral arms.

Optical Properties of Quantum-Dot-Doped Liquid Scintillators

Semiconductor nanoparticles (quantum dots) were studied in the context of liquid scintillator development for upcoming neutrino experiments. The unique optical and chemical properties of quantum dots are particularly promising for the use in neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. Liquid scintillators for large scale neutrino detectors have to meet specific requirements which are reviewed, highlighting the peculiarities of quantum-dot-doping. In this paper, we report results on laboratory-scale measurements of the attenuation length and the fluorescence properties of three commercial quantum dot samples. The results include absorbance and emission stability measurements, improvement in transparency due to filtering of the quantum dot samples, precipitation tests to isolate the quantum dots from solution and energy transfer studies with quantum dots and the fluorophore PPO.

Massive star-formation toward G28.87+0.07 (IRAS 18411-0338) investigated by means of maser kinematics and radio to infrared, continuum observations

We used the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and the European VLBI Network (EVN) to perform phase-referenced VLBI observations of the three most powerful maser transitions associated with the high-mass star-forming region G28.87+0.07: the 22.2 GHz H$_{2}$O, 6.7 GHz CH$_{3}$OH, and 1.665 GHz OH lines. We also performed VLA observations of the radio continuum emission at 1.3 and 3.6 cm and Subaru observations of the continuum emission at 24.5 $μ$m. Two centimeter continuum sources are detected and one of them (named "HMC") is compact and placed at the center of the observed distribution of H$_{2}$O, CH$_{3}$OH and OH masers. The bipolar distribution of line-of-sight (l.o.s) velocities and the pattern of the proper motions suggest that the water masers are driven by a (proto)stellar jet interacting with the dense circumstellar gas. The same jet could both excite the centimeter continuum source named "HMC" (interpreted as free-free emission from shocked gas) and power the molecular outflow observed at larger scales -- although one cannot exclude that the free-free continuum is rather originating from a hypercompact \ion{H}{2} region. At 24.5 $μ$m, we identify two objects separated along the north-south direction, whose absolute positions agree with those of the two VLA continuum sources. We establish that $\sim$90% of the luminosity of the region ($\sim$\times10^{5} L_\sun$) is coming from the radio source "HMC", which confirms the existence of an embedded massive young stellar object (MYSO) exciting the masers and possibly still undergoing heavy accretion from the surrounding envelope.

Integer spin-chain antiferromagnetism of the 4d oxide CaRuO3 with post-perovskite structure

A quasi-one dimensional magnetism was discovered in the post-perovskite CaRuO3 (Ru4+: 4d4, Cmcm), which is iso-compositional with the perovskite CaRuO3 (Pbnm). An antiferromagnetic spin-chain function with -J/kB = 350 K well reproduces the experimental curve of the magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature, suggesting long-range antiferromagnetic correlations. The anisotropic magnetism is probably owing to the dyz - 2p- dzx and dzx - 2p- dyz superexchange bonds along a-axis. The Sommerfeld coefficient of the specific heat is fairly small, 0.16(2) mJ mol-1 K-2, indicating that the magnetism reflects localized nature of the 4d electrons. As far as we know, this is the first observation of an integer (S = 1) spin-chain antiferromagnetism in the 4d electron system.

Sr3Co2O6: a possible frustrated spin-chain material

A dense phase of a post-layered perovskite Sr3Co2O6 was created by a high-pressure and high-temperature synthetic route and quenched to ambient conditions. The structure of Sr3Co2O6 was determined by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Sr3Co2O6 crystallizes in the K4CdCl6-type structure (an infinite chain-type structure), which is 6% denser than the known, iso-compositional layered perovskite Sr3Co2O7-d (d~1). The K4CdCl6-type Sr3Co2O6 shows complex magnetic behavior reflecting the spin-chain nature as well as the analogue oxides Ca3Co2O6 and Ca3CoRhO6, whose microscopic magnetic origin is still highly debated.

Magnetic and electrical properties and carrier doping effects on the Fe-based host compound Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6

Additional charge carriers were introduced to the iron oxyarsenide Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 under a high-pressure condition, followed by measurements of electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, and magnetic susceptibility. The host compound Sr4Sc2Fe2As2O6 shows metallic conductivity down to ~200 K and turns to show a semiconducting-like conductivity accompanied by a positive magneto-resistance (22% at 70 kOe). Although the carrier density is comparable at 300 K (5.9x1021 cm-3) with that of the other Fe-based superconductors, no superconductivity appears down to 2 K. This is primarily because the net carrier density decreases over 3 orders of magnitude on cooling and additionally a possible magnetic order at ~120 K prevents carriers from pairing. The properties were altered largely by introducing the additional carriers.

Absolute positions of 6.7-GHz methanol masers

The ATCA, MERLIN and VLA interferometers were used to measure the absolute positions of 35 6.7 GHz methanol masers to subarcsecond or higher accuracy. Our measurements represent essential preparatory data for Very Long Baseline Interferometry, which can provide accurate parallax and proper motion determinations of the star-forming regions harboring the masers. Our data also allow associations to be established with infrared sources at different wavelengths. Our findings support the view that the 6.7 GHz masers are associated with the earliest phases of high-mass star formation.

A high-sensitivity 6.7 GHz methanol maser survey toward H2O sources

We present the results of a high sensitivity survey for 6.7 GHz methanol masers towards 22 GHz water maser using the 100 m Efflesberg telescope. A total of 89 sources were observed and 10 new methanol masers were detected. The new detections are relatively faint with peak flux densities between 0.5 and 4.0 Jy. A nil detection rate from low-mass star forming regions enhances the conclusion that the masers are only associated with massive star formation. Even the faintest methanol maser in our survey, with a luminosity of 1.1 $10^{-9} L_\odot$ is associated with massive stars as inferred from its infrared luminosity.
