57^{57}Zn ββ-delayed proton emission establishes the 56^{56}Ni rprp-process waiting point bypass

We measured the 57^{57}Zn ββ-delayed proton (ββp) and γγ emission at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. We find a 57^{57}Zn half-life of 43.6 ±\pm 0.2 ms, ββp branching ratio of (84.7 ±\pm 1.4)%, and identify four transitions corresponding to the exotic ββ-γγ-pp decay mode, the second such identification in the fpf p-shell. The p/γp/γ ratio was used to correct for isospin mixing while determining the 57^{57}Zn mass via the isobaric multiplet mass equation. Previously, it was uncertain as to whether the rp-process flow could bypass the textbook waiting point 56^{56}Ni for astrophysical conditions relevant to Type-I X-ray bursts. Our results definitively establish the existence of the 56^{56}Ni bypass, with 14-17% of the rprp-process flow taking this route.

Reexamination of 6^{6}Li scattering as a Probe to Investigate the Isoscalar Giant Resonances in Nuclei

Inelastic 6{}^{6}Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on 12{}^{12}C and 93{}^{93}Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range 0∘<θlab.<2∘0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of 6{}^{6}Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the E0E0 strengths in 12{}^{12}C and 93{}^{93}Nb. It was found that the monopole strength in 12{}^{12}C exhausts 52±3(stat.)±8(sys.)52 \pm 3^\text{(stat.)} \pm 8 ^\text{(sys.)}\% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous αα-scattering experiments. The monopole strength in 93{}^{93}Nb exhausts 92±4(stat.)±10(sys.)92 \pm 4^\text{(stat.)} \pm 10 ^\text{(sys.)}\% of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of A≈90A\approx90. Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

Direct observation of long-lived isomers in 212^{212}Bi

Long-lived isomers in 212Bi have been studied following 238U projectile fragmentation at 670 MeV per nucleon. The fragmentation products were injected as highly charged ions into the GSI storage ring, giving access to masses and half-lives. While the excitation energy of the first isomer of 212Bi was confirmed, the second isomer was observed at 1478(30) keV, in contrast to the previously accepted value of >1910 keV. It was also found to have an extended Lorentz-corrected in-ring halflife >30 min, compared to 7.0(3) min for the neutral atom. Both the energy and half-life differences can be understood as being due a substantial, though previously unrecognised, internal decay branch for neutral atoms. Earlier shell-model calculations are now found to give good agreement with the isomer excitation energy. Furthermore, these and new calculations predict the existence of states at slightly higher energy that could facilitate isomer de-excitation studies.

Schottky mass measurements of heavy neutron-rich nuclides in the element range $70\leZ \le79$ at the ESR

Storage-ring mass spectrometry was applied to neutron-rich 197^{197}Au projectile fragments. Masses of 181,183^{181,183}Lu, 185,186^{185,186}Hf, 187,188^{187,188}Ta, 191^{191}W, and 192,193^{192,193}Re nuclei were measured for the first time. The uncertainty of previously known masses of 189,190^{189,190}W and 195^{195}Os nuclei was improved. Observed irregularities on the smooth two-neutron separation energies for Hf and W isotopes are linked to the collectivity phenomena in the corresponding nuclei.
