Scaling of the local quantum uncertainty at quantum phase transitions

We investigate the local quantum uncertainty (LQU) between a block of L qubits and one single qubit in a composite system of n qubits driven through a quantum phase transition (QPT). A first-order QPT is analytically considered through a Hamiltonian implementation of the quantum search. In the case of second-order QPTs, we consider the transverse-field Ising chain via a numerical analysis through density matrix renormalization group. For both cases, we compute the LQU for finite-sizes as a function of L and of the coupling parameter, analyzing its pronounced behavior at the QPT.

Edge magnetization and local density of states in chiral nanoribbons

We study the edge magnetization and the local density of states of chiral graphene nanoribbons using a π-orbital Hubbard model in the mean-field approximation. We show that the inclusion of a realistic next-nearest hopping term in the tight-binding Hamiltonian changes the graphene nanoribbons band structure significantly and affects its magnetic properties. We study the behavior of the edge magnetization upon departing from half filling as a function of the nanoribbon chirality and width. We find that the edge magnetization depends very weakly in the nanoribbon width, regardless of chirality as long as the ribbon is sufficiently wide. We compare our results to recent scanning tunneling microscopy experiments reporting signatures of magnetic ordering in chiral nanoribbons and provide an interpretation for the observed peaks in the local density of states, that does not depend on the antiferromagnetic interedge interaction.

Symmetry breaking and physical properties of the bosonic single-impurity Anderson model

We show how exact diagonalization of small clusters can be used as a fast and reliable impurity solver by determining the phase diagram and physical properties of the bosonic single-impurity Anderson model. This is specially important for applications which require the solution of a large number of different single-impurity problems, such as the bosonic dynamical mean field theory of disordered systems. In particular, we investigate the connection between spontaneous global gauge symmetry breaking and the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC). We show how BEC is accurately signaled by the appearance of broken symmetry, even when a fairly modest number of states is retained. The occurrence of symmetry breaking can be detected both by adding a small conjugate field or, as in generic quantum critical points, by the divergence of the associated phase susceptibility. Our results show excellent agreement with the considerably more demanding numerical renormalization group (NRG) method. We also investigate the mean impurity occupancy and its fluctuations, identifying an asymmetry in their critical behavior across the quantum phase transitions between BEC and `Mott' phases.
