Nucleation of Al Nanocrystals in Solute-Substituted Al Metallic Glasses I: Structural characterization

Primary crystallization in high Al-content metallic glasses is driven by nanometer-diameter regions with internal structure similar to fcc Al. Comparison of fluctuation electron microscopy (FEM) data to FEM simulations of fcc Al clusters dispersed in a dense-random packed matrix is used to extract the diameter and volume fraction of the ordered regions in a Al88Y7Fe5 base glass and in glasses with 1 at.% Cu substituted for Y or Al. The size and density of nanocrystals were measured as a function of isothermal annealing time for the same alloys. The volume fraction of crystalline material grows under isothermal annealing, so the phase transformation is not purely grain coarsening, but the crystalline volume fraction is lower than the volume fraction of ordered regions in the as-quenched samples, so not all of the ordered regions act as nuclei. Changes in diameter and volume fraction of the ordered regions with alloying are correlated with changes in the crystallization temperature, nucleation rate, and nanocrystal density. No evidence for phase separation is observed, and FEM simulations from a molecular dynamics quenched structural model of similar composition do not show the features observed in experiment.

Microalloying effect in ternary Al-Sm-X (X=Ag, Au, Cu) metallic glasses studied by ab initio molecular dynamics

The icosahedral-like polyhedral fraction (ICO-like fraction) has been studied as a criterion for predicting the glass-forming ability of bulk ternary metallic glasses, Al90Sm8X2 (X = Al (binary), Cu, Ag, Au), using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We found that the ICO-like fraction can be determined with adequate precision to explore correlations with AIMD simulations. We then demonstrated that ICO-like fraction correlates with the critical cooling rate, which is a widely used intrinsic measure of glass forming ability. These results suggest that the ICO-like fraction from AIMD simulations may offer a useful guide for searching and screening for good glass formers.

On the role of Sm in solidification of Al-Sm metallic glasses

During the solidification of Al-Sm metallic glasses the evolution of the supercooled liquid atomic structure has been identified with an increasing population of icosahedral-like clusters with increasing Sm concentration. These clusters exhibit slower kinetics compared to the remaining clusters in the liquid leading to enhanced amorphous phase stability and glass forming ability (GFA). Maximum icosahedral-ordering and atomic packing density have been found for the Al90Sm10 and Al85Sm15 alloys, respectively, whereas minimum cohesive energy has been found for the Al93Sm7 which is consistent with the range of compositions (from Al92Sm8 to Al84Sm16) found experimentally with high GFA.
