Community input to the European Strategy on particle physics: Searches for Permanent Electric Dipole Moments

Searches for electric dipole moments (EDMs) in fundamental particles and quantum systems with spin are pivotal experiments at the intersection of low-energy and high-precision particle physics. These investigations offer a complementary pathway to uncovering new physics beyond the Standard Model, parallel to high-energy collider searches. EDM experiments are among the most sensitive probes for detecting non-standard time-reversal (T) symmetry violations and, via the CPT theorem, CP-violation (CPV). Current EDM measurements test new physics at mass scales in or above the 10TeV to 100TeV range. This community input to the European Particle Physics Strategy Update highlights the status of the field, and describes challenges and opportunities in Europe.

CP-violating axion interactions in effective field theory

Axions are introduced to explain the observed smallness of the $\bar θ$ term of QCD. Standard Model extensions typically contain new sources of CP violation, for instance to account for the baryon asymmetry of the universe. In the presence of additional CP-violating sources a Peccei-Quinn mechanism does not remove all CP violation, leading to CP-odd interactions among axions and Standard Model fields. In this work, we use effective field theory to parametrize generic sources of beyond-the-Standard-Model CP violation. We systematically compute the resulting CP-odd couplings of axions to leptons and hadrons by using chiral perturbation theory. We discuss in detail the phenomenology of the CP-odd axion couplings and compare limits from axion searches, such as fifth force and monopole-dipole searches and astrophysics, to direct limits on the CP-violating operators from electric dipole moment experiments. While limits from electric dipole moment searches are tight, the proposed ARIADNE experiment can potentially improve the existing constraints in a window of axion masses.

Electric dipole moments of baryons with bottom quarks

Triggered by experimental prospects to measure electromagnetic dipole moments of baryons containing a bottom quark, we calculate the CP-odd electric dipole moments (EDMs) of spin-1/2 single-bottom baryons. We consider CP-violating dimension-six operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory that involve bottom quarks, and apply heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to compute the EDMs of several baryons. We discuss the expected size of the EDMs for beyond-the-Standard Model physics appearing at the TeV scale.

Parity- and time-reversal-violating nuclear forces

Parity-violating and time-reversal conserving (PVTC) and parity-violating and time-reversal-violating (PVTV) forces in nuclei form only a tiny component of the total interaction between nucleons. The study of these tiny forces can nevertheless be of extreme interest because they allow to obtain information on fundamental symmetries using nuclear systems. The PVTC interaction derives from the weak interaction between the quarks inside nucleons and nuclei and the study of PVTC effects opens a window on the quark-quark weak interaction. The PVTV interaction is sensitive to more exotic interactions at the fundamental level, in particular to strong CP violation in the Standard Model Lagrangian, or even to exotic phenomena predicted in various beyond-the-Standard-Model scenarios. The presence of these interactions can be revealed either by studying various asymmetries in polarized scattering of nuclear systems, or by measuring the presence of non-vanishing permanent electric dipole moments of nucleons, nuclei and diamagnetic atoms and molecules. In this contribution, we review the derivation of the nuclear PVTC and PVTV interactions within various frameworks. We focus in particular on the application of chiral effective field theory, which allows for a more strict connection with the fundamental interactions at the quark level. We investigate PVTC and PVTV effects induced by these potential on several few-nucleon observables, such as the longitudinal asymmetry in proton-proton scattering and radiative neutron-proton capture, and the electric dipole momentsof the deuteron and the trinucleon system.

Direct and indirect constraints on CP-violating Higgs-quark and Higgs-gluon interactions

We investigate direct and indirect constraints on the complete set of anomalous CP-violating Higgs couplings to quarks and gluons originating from dimension-6 operators, by studying their signatures at the LHC and in electric dipole moments (EDMs). We show that existing uncertainties in hadronic and nuclear matrix elements have a significant impact on the interpretation of EDM experiments, and we quantify the improvements needed to fully exploit the power of EDM searches. Currently, the best bounds on the anomalous CP-violating Higgs interactions come from a combination of EDM measurements and the data from LHC Run 1. We argue that Higgs production cross section and branching ratios measurements at the LHC Run 2 will not improve the constraints significantly. On the other hand, the bounds on the couplings scale roughly linearly with EDM limits, so that future theoretical and experimental EDM developments can have a major impact in pinning down interactions of the Higgs.

Is there room for CP violation in the top-Higgs sector?

We discuss direct and indirect probes of chirality-flipping couplings of the top quark to Higgs and gauge bosons, considering both CP-conserving and CP-violating observables, in the framework of the Standard Model effective field theory. In our analysis we include current and prospective constraints from collider physics, precision electroweak tests, flavor physics, and electric dipole moments (EDMs). We find that low-energy indirect probes are very competitive, even after accounting for long-distance uncertainties. In particular, EDMs put constraints on the electroweak CP-violating dipole moments of the top that are two to three orders of magnitude stronger than existing limits. The new indirect constraint on the top EDM is given by $|d_t| < 5 \cdot 10^{-20}$ e cm at $90\%$ C.L.

Tests of Lorentz and CPT symmetry with hadrons and nuclei

We explore the breaking of Lorentz and CPT invariance in strong interactions at low energy in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Starting from the set of Lorentz-violating operators of mass-dimension five with quark and gluon fields, we construct the effective chiral Lagrangian with hadronic and electromagnetic interactions induced by these operators. We develop the power-counting scheme and discuss loop diagrams and the one-pion-exchange nucleon-nucleon potential. The effective chiral Lagrangian is the basis for calculations of low-energy observables with hadronic degrees of freedom. As examples, we consider clock-comparison experiments with nuclei and spin-precession experiments with nucleons in storage rings. We derive strict limits on the dimension-five tensors that quantify Lorentz and CPT violation.

Violations of discrete space-time symmetries in chiral effective field theory

We review recent progress in the theoretical description of the violation of discrete space-time symmetries in hadronic and nuclear systems. We focus on parity-violating and time-reversal-conserving interactions which are induced by the Standard Model weak interaction, and on parity- and time-reversal-violating interactions which can be caused by a nonzero QCD theta term or by beyond-the-Standard Model physics. We discuss the origins of such interactions and review the development of the chiral effective field theory extension that includes discrete symmetry violations. We discuss the construction of symmetry-violating chiral Lagrangians and nucleon-nucleon potentials and their applications in few-body systems.

Nuclear Electric Dipole Moments in Chiral Effective Field Theory

We provide a consistent and complete calculation of the electric dipole moments of the deuteron, helion, and triton in the framework of chiral effective field theory. The CP-conserving and CP-violating interactions are treated on equal footing and we consider CP-violating one-, two-, and three-nucleon operators up to next-to-leading-order in the chiral power counting. In particular, we calculate for the first time EDM contributions induced by the CP-violating three-pion operator. We find that effects of CP-violating nucleon-nucleon contact interactions are larger than those found in previous studies based on phenomenological models for the CP-conserving nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results which apply to any model of CP violation in the hadronic sector can be used to test various scenarios of CP violation. As examples, we study the implications of our results on the QCD $θ$-term and the minimal left-right symmetric model.

Parity violation in neutron capture on the proton: determining the weak pion-nucleon coupling

We investigate the parity-violating analyzing power in neutron capture on the proton at thermal energies in the framework of chiral effective field theory. By combining this analysis with a previous analysis of parity violation in proton-proton scattering, we are able to extract the size of the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant. The uncertainty is significant and dominated by the experimental error which is expected to be reduced soon.

A study of the parity-odd nucleon-nucleon potential

We investigate the parity-violating nucleon-nucleon potential as obtained in chiral effective field theory. By using resonance saturation we compare the chiral potential to the more traditional one-meson exchange potential. In particular, we show how parameters appearing in the different approaches can be compared with each other and demonstrate that analyses of parity violation in proton-proton scattering within the different approaches are in good agreement. In the second part of this work, we extend the parity-violating potential to next-to-next-to-leading order. We show that generally it includes both one-pion- and two-pion-exchange corrections, but the former play no significant role. The two-pion-exchange corrections depend on five new low-energy constants which only become important if the leading-order weak pion-nucleon constant $h_π$ turns out to be very small.

Beyond-the-Standard-Model matrix elements with the gradient flow

At the Forschungszentrum Juelich (FZJ) we have started a long-term program that aims to determine beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) matrix elements using the gradient flow, and to understand the impact of BSM physics in nucleon and nuclear observables. Using the gradient flow, we propose to calculate the QCD component of key beyond the Standard Model (BSM) matrix elements related to quark and strong theta CP violation and the strange content within the nucleon. The former set of matrix elements impacts our understanding of Electric Dipole Moments (EDMs) of nucleons and nuclei (a key signature of BSM physics), while the latter contributes to elastic recoil of Dark Matter particles off nucleons and nuclei. If successful, these results will lay the foundation for extraction of BSM observables from future low-energy, high-intensity and high-accuracy experimental measurements.

Unraveling models of CP violation through electric dipole moments of light nuclei

We show that the proposed measurements of the electric dipole moments of light nuclei in storage rings would put strong constraints on models of flavor-diagonal CP violation. Our analysis is exemplified by a comparison of the Standard Model including the QCD theta term, the minimal left-right symmetric model, a specific version of the so-called aligned two-Higgs doublet model, and briefly the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. By using effective field theory techniques we demonstrate to what extend measurements of the electric dipole moments of the nucleons, the deuteron, and helion could discriminate between these scenarios. We discuss how measurements of electric dipole moments of other systems relate to the light-nuclear measurements.

Parity violation in proton-proton scattering from chiral effective field theory

We present a calculation of the parity-violating longitudinal asymmetry in proton-proton scattering. The calculation is performed in the framework of chiral effective field theory which is applied systematically to both the parity-conserving and parity-violating interactions. The asymmetry is calculated up to next-to-leading order in the parity-odd nucleon-nucleon potential. At this order the asymmetry depends on two parity-violating low-energy constants: the weak pion-nucleon coupling constant $h_π$ and one four-nucleon contact coupling. By comparison with the existing data, we obtain a rather large range for $h_π= (1.1\pm 2)\cdot 10^{-6}$. This range is consistent with theoretical estimations and experimental limits, but more data are needed to pin down a better constrained value. We conclude that an additional measurement of the asymmetry around 125 MeV lab energy would be beneficial to achieve this goal.

Parity- and Time-Reversal-Violating Moments of Light Nuclei

I present the calculation of parity- and time-reversal-violating moments of the nucleon and light nuclei, originating from the QCD theta term and effective dimension-six operators. By applying chiral effective field theory these calculations are performed in a unified framework. I argue that measurements of a few light-nuclear electric dipole moments would shed light on the mechanism of parity and time-reversal violation.

Renormalization Group Running of Dimension-Six Sources of Parity and Time-Reversal Violation

We perform a systematic study of flavor-diagonal parity- and time-reversal-violating operators of dimension six which could arise from physics beyond the SM. We begin at the unknown high-energy scale where these operators originate. At this scale the operators are constrained by gauge invariance which has important consequences for the form of effective operators at lower energies. In particular for the four-quark operators. We calculate one-loop QCD and, when necessary, electroweak corrections to the operators and evolve them down to the electroweak scale and subsequently to hadronic scales. We find that for most operators QCD corrections are not particularly significant. We derive a set of operators at low energy which is expected to dominate hadronic and nuclear EDMs due to physics beyond the SM and obtain quantitative relations between these operators and the original dimension-six operators at the high-energy scale. We use the limit on the neutron EDM to set bounds on the dimension-six operators.

The Effective Chiral Lagrangian From Dimension-Six Parity and Time-Reversal Violation

We classify the parity- and time-reversal-violating operators involving quark and gluon fields that have effective dimension six: the quark electric dipole moment, the quark and gluon chromo-electric dipole moments, and four four-quark operators. We construct the effective chiral Lagrangian with hadronic and electromagnetic interactions that originate from them, which serves as the basis for calculations of low-energy observables. The form of the effective interactions depends on the chiral properties of these operators. We develop a power-counting scheme and calculate within this scheme, as an example, the parity- and time-reversal-violating pion-nucleon form factor. We also discuss the electric dipole moments of the nucleon and light nuclei.

Toroidal Quadrupole Form Factor of the Deuteron

We calculate the toroidal quadrupole moment and form factor of the deuteron, which violate time-reversal symmetry but conserve parity, at leading order in two-flavor chiral effective field theory with perturbative pion exchange. We take into account time-reversal and parity violation due to the QCD vacuum angle combined with parity violation resulting from the weak interaction in the Standard Model. We also consider time-reversal and parity violation that at the quark-gluon level results from effective dimension-six operators originating from physics beyond the Standard Model.

Deuteron Magnetic Quadrupole Moment From Chiral Effective Field Theory

We calculate the magnetic quadrupole moment (MQM) of the deuteron at leading order in the systematic expansion provided by chiral effective field theory. We take into account parity and time-reversal violation which, at the quark-gluon level, results from the QCD vacuum angle and dimension-six operators that originate from physics beyond the Standard Model. We show that the deuteron MQM can be expressed in terms of five low-energy constants that appear in the parity- and time-reversal-violating nuclear potential and electromagnetic current, four of which also contribute to the electric dipole moments of light nuclei. We conclude that the deuteron MQM has an enhanced sensitivity to the QCD vacuum angle and that its measurement would be complementary to the proposed measurements of light-nuclear EDMs.

Electric Dipole Moments of Light Nuclei From Chiral Effective Field Theory

We set up the framework for the calculation of electric dipole moments (EDMs) of light nuclei using the systematic expansion provided by chiral effective field theory (EFT). We take into account parity (P) and time-reversal (T) violation which, at the quark-gluon level, originates from the QCD vacuum angle and dimension-six operators capturing physics beyond the Standard Model. We argue that EDMs of light nuclei can be expressed in terms of six low-energy constants that appear in the P- and T-violating nuclear potential and electric current. As examples, we calculate the EDMs of the deuteron, the triton, and 3He in leading order in the EFT expansion.

Parity- and Time-Reversal-Violating Form Factors of the Deuteron

We calculate the electric-dipole and magnetic-quadrupole form factors of the deuteron that arise as a low-energy manifestation of parity and time-reversal violation in quark-gluon interactions of effective dimension four and six: the QCD vacuum angle, the quark electric and chromo-electric dipole moments, and the gluon chromo-electric dipole moment. Within the framework of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, we show that the relative sizes of the corresponding moments allow an identification of the symmetry-breaking source.

preprint2011arXiv

The Time-Reversal- and Parity-Violating Nuclear Potential in Chiral Effective Theory

We derive the parity- and time-reversal-violating nuclear interactions stemming from the QCD theta term and quark/gluon operators of effective dimension 6: quark electric dipole moments, quark and gluon chromo-electric dipole moments, and two four-quark operators. We work in the framework of two-flavor chiral perturbation theory, where a systematic expansion is possible. The different chiral-transformation properties of the sources of time-reversal violation lead to different hadronic interactions. For all sources considered the leading-order potential involves known one-pion exchange, but its specific form and the relative importance of short-range interactions depend on the source. For the theta term, the leading potential is solely given by one-pion exchange, which does not contribute to the deuteron electric dipole moment. In subleading order, a new two-pion-exchange potential is obtained. Its short-range component is indistinguishable from one of two undetermined contact interactions that appear at the same order and represent effects of heavier mesons and other short-range QCD dynamics. One-pion-exchange corrections at this order are discussed as well.

The Electric Dipole Form Factor of the Nucleon in Chiral Perturbation Theory to Sub-leading Order

The electric dipole form factor (EDFF) of the nucleon stemming from the QCD theta term and from the quark color-electric dipole moments is calculated in chiral perturbation theory to sub-leading order. This is the lowest order in which the isoscalar EDFF receives a calculable, non-analytic contribution from the pion cloud. In the case of the theta term, the expected lower bound on the deuteron electric dipole moment is |d_d| > 1.4 10^(-4) θe fm. The momentum dependence of the isovector EDFF is proportional to a non-derivative time-reversal-violating pion-nucleon coupling, and the scale for momentum variation ---appearing, in particular, in the radius of the form factor--- is the pion mass.
