Heptagon Amplitude in the Multi-Regge Regime

As we have shown in previous work, the high energy limit of scattering amplitudes in N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory corresponds to the infrared limit of the 1-dimensional quantum integrable system that solves minimal area problems in AdS5. This insight can be developed into a systematic algorithm to compute the strong coupling limit of amplitudes in the multi-Regge regime through the solution of auxiliary Bethe Ansatz equations. We apply this procedure to compute the scattering amplitude for n=7 external gluons in different multi-Regge regions at infinite 't Hooft coupling. Our formulas are remarkably consistent with the expected form of 7-gluon Regge cut contributions in perturbative gauge theory. A full description of the general algorithm and a derivation of results will be given in a forthcoming paper.

The Bethe Roots of Regge Cuts in Strongly Coupled N=4 SYM Theory

We describe a general algorithm for the computation of the remainder function for n-gluon scattering in multi-Regge kinematics for strongly coupled planar N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. This regime is accessible through the infrared physics of an auxiliary quantum integrable system describing strings in AdS5xS5. Explicit formulas are presented for n=6 and n=7 external gluons. Our results are consistent with expectations from perturbative gauge theory. This paper comprises the technical details for the results announced in arXiv:1405.3658 .

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN

This document provides a brief overview of the recently published report on the design of the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), which comprises its physics programme, accelerator physics, technology and main detector concepts. The LHeC exploits and develops challenging, though principally existing, accelerator and detector technologies. This summary is complemented by brief illustrations of some of the highlights of the physics programme, which relies on a vastly extended kinematic range, luminosity and unprecedented precision in deep inelastic scattering. Illustrations are provided regarding high precision QCD, new physics (Higgs, SUSY) and electron-ion physics. The LHeC is designed to run synchronously with the LHC in the twenties and to achieve an integrated luminosity of O(100) fb$^{-1}$. It will become the cleanest high resolution microscope of mankind and will substantially extend as well as complement the investigation of the physics of the TeV energy scale, which has been enabled by the LHC.

Generalized Bootstrap Equations and possible implications for the NLO Odderon

We formulate and discuss generalized bootstrap equations in nonabelian gauge theories. They are shown to hold in the leading logarithmic approximation. Since their validity is related to the self-consistency of the Steinmann relations for inelastic production amplitudes they can be expected to be valid also in NLO. Specializing to the N=4 SYM, we show that the validity in NLO of these generalized bootstrap equations allows to find the NLO Odderon solution with intercept exactly at one, a result which is valid also for the planar limit of QCD.

On the Relation of the LHeC and the LHC

The present note relies on the recently published conceptual design report of the LHeC and extends the first contribution to the European strategy debate in emphasising the role of the LHeC to complement and complete the high luminosity LHC programme. The brief discussion therefore focuses on the importance of high precision PDF and $α_s$ determinations for the physics beyond the Standard Model (GUTs, SUSY, Higgs). Emphasis is also given to the importance of high parton density phenomena in nuclei and their relevance to the heavy ion physics programme at the LHC.

The Excited Hexagon Reloaded

This work revisits the computation of six-gluon scattering amplitudes in the high energy limit of strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. It is based on previous studies in which we showed that the amplitude simplifies in the Regge regime and outlined an efficient computational scheme. By exploiting a symmetry of the underlying equations we are now able to argue that a term we had seen in preliminary numerical studies must vanish identically. The derived formula for the Regge limit of the 6-gluon scattering amplitude at strong coupling differs from the one we had conjectured previously.

A Large Hadron Electron Collider at CERN: Report on the Physics and Design Concepts for Machine and Detector

The physics programme and the design are described of a new collider for particle and nuclear physics, the Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC), in which a newly built electron beam of 60 GeV, up to possibly 140 GeV, energy collides with the intense hadron beams of the LHC. Compared to HERA, the kinematic range covered is extended by a factor of twenty in the negative four-momentum squared, $Q^2$, and in the inverse Bjorken $x$, while with the design luminosity of $10^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ the LHeC is projected to exceed the integrated HERA luminosity by two orders of magnitude. The physics programme is devoted to an exploration of the energy frontier, complementing the LHC and its discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model with high precision deep inelastic scattering measurements. These are designed to investigate a variety of fundamental questions in strong and electroweak interactions. The physics programme also includes electron-deuteron and electron-ion scattering in a $(Q^2, 1/x)$ range extended by four orders of magnitude as compared to previous lepton-nucleus DIS experiments for novel investigations of neutron's and nuclear structure, the initial conditions of Quark-Gluon Plasma formation and further quantum chromodynamic phenomena. The LHeC may be realised either as a ring-ring or as a linac-ring collider. Optics and beam dynamics studies are presented for both versions, along with technical design considerations on the interaction region, magnets and further components, together with a design study for a high acceptance detector. Civil engineering and installation studies are presented for the accelerator and the detector. The LHeC can be built within a decade and thus be operated while the LHC runs in its high-luminosity phase. It thus represents a major opportunity for progress in particle physics exploiting the investment made in the LHC.

BFKL approach and 2->5 MHV amplitude

We study MHV amplitude for the 2 -> 5 scattering in the multi-Regge kinematics. The Mandelstam cut correction to the BDS amplitude is calculated in the leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) and the corresponding remainder function is given to any loop order in a closed integral form. We show that the LLA remainder function at two loops for 2 -> 5 amplitude can be written as a sum of two 2 -> 4 remainder functions due to recursive properties of the leading order impact factors. We also make some generalizations for the MHV amplitudes with more external particles. The results of the present study are in agreement with all leg two loop symbol derived by Caron-Huot as shown in a parallel paper of one of the authors with collaborators.

Multi-Regge Limit of the n-Gluon Bubble Ansatz

We investigate n-gluon scattering amplitudes in the multi-Regge region of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory at strong coupling. Through a careful analysis of the thermodynamic bubble ansatz (TBA) for surfaces in AdS5 with n-g(lu)on boundary conditions we demonstrate that the multi-Regge limit probes the large volume regime of the TBA. In reaching the multi-Regge regime we encounter wall-crossing in the TBA for all n>6. Our results imply that there exists an auxiliary system of algebraic Bethe ansatz equations which encode valuable information on the analytical structure of amplitudes at strong coupling.

Ward Identities for Amplitudes with Reggeized Gluons

Starting from the effective action of high energy QCD we derive Ward identities for Green's functions of reggeized gluons. They follow from the gauge invariance of the effective action, and allow to derive new representations of amplitudes containing physical particles as well as reggeized gluons. We explicitly demonstrate their validity for the BFKL kernel, and we present a new derivation of the kernel.

Collinear and Regge behavior of 2 -> 4 MHV amplitude in N = 4 super Yang-Mills theory

We investigate the collinear and Regge behavior of the 2 -> 4 MHV amplitude in N = 4super Yang-Mills theory in the BFKL approach. The expression for the remainder function in the collinear kinematics proposed by Alday, Gaiotto, Maldacena, Sever and Vieira is analytically continued to the Mandelstam region. The result of the continuation in the Regge kinematics shows an agreement with the BFKL approach up to to five-loop level. We present the Regge theory interpretation of the obtained results and discuss some issues related to a possible non-multiplicative renormalization of the remainder function in the collinear limit.

Excited Hexagon Wilson Loops for Strongly Coupled N=4 SYM

This work is devoted to the six-gluon scattering amplitude in strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. At weak coupling, an appropriate high energy limit of the so-called remainder function, i.e. of the deviation from the BDS formula, may be understood in terms of the lowest eigenvalue of the BFKL hamiltonian. According to Alday et al., amplitudes in the strongly coupled theory can be constructed through an auxiliary 1-dimensional quantum system. We argue that certain excitations of this quantum system determine the Regge limit of the remainder function at strong coupling and we compute its precise value.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Integrable spin chains and scattering amplitudes

In this review we show that the multi-particle scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM at large Nc and in the multi-Regge kinematics for some physical regions have the high energy behavior appearing from the contribution of the Mandelstam cuts in the complex angular momentum plane of the corresponding t-channel partial waves. These Mandelstam cuts or Regge cuts are resulting from gluon composite states in the adjoint representation of the gauge group SU(Nc). In the leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) their contribution to the six point amplitude is in full agreement with the known two-loop result. The Hamiltonian for the Mandelstam states constructed from n gluons in LLA coincides with the local Hamiltonian of an integrable open spin chain. We construct the corresponding wave functions using the integrals of motion and the Baxter-Sklyanin approach.

MHV amplitude for 3->3 gluon scattering in Regge limit

We calculate corrections to the BDS formula for the six-particle planar MHV amplitude for the gluon transition 3->3 in the multi-Regge kinematics for the physical region, in which the Regge pole ansatz is not valid. The remainder function at two loops is obtained by an analytic continuation of the expression derived by Goncharov, Spradlin, Vergu and Volovich to the kinematic region described by the Mandelstam singularity exchange in the crossing channel. It contains both the imaginary and real contributions being in agreement with the BFKL predictions. The real part of the three loop expression is found from a dispersion-like all-loop formula for the remainder function in the multi-Regge kinematics derived by one of the authors. We also make a prediction for the all-loop real part of the remainder function multiplied by the BDS phase, which can be accessible through calculations in the regime of the strong coupling constant.

R-current six-point correlators in AdS_5 Supergravity

Within the conjectured duality between N=4 super Yang-Mills and Anti-deSitter string theory, the BFKL Pomeron of the gauge theory corresponds to the graviton mode of the dual string. As a first step towards analyzing multigraviton exchange, we investigate R-current six-point functions within the supergravity approximation. We compute the analogue of diffractive scattering, and we analyze the triple Regge limit. In the supergravity approximation the triple graviton vertex is found to vanish.

N=4 supersymmetric Yang Mills scattering amplitudes at high energies: the Regge cut contribution

We further investigate, in the planar limit of N=4 supersymmetric Yang Mills theories, the high energy Regge behavior of six-point MHV scattering amplitudes. In particular, for the new Regge cut contribution found in our previous paper, we compute in the leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) the energy spectrum of the BFKL equation in the color octet channel, and we calculate explicitly the two loop corrections to the discontinuities of the amplitudes for the transitions 2 to 4 and 3 to 3. We find an explicit solution of the BFKL equation for the octet channel for arbitrary momentum transfers and investigate the intercepts of the Regge singularities in this channel. As an important result we find that the universal collinear and infrared singularities of the BDS formula are not affected by this Regge-cut contribution. Any improvement of the BDS formula should reproduce this cut to all orders in the coupling.

Baryon scattering at high energies: wave function, impact factor, and gluon radiation

The scattering of a baryon consisting of three massive quarks is investigated in the high energy limit of perturbative QCD. A model of a relativistic proton-like wave function, dependent on valence quark longitudinal and transverse momenta and on quark helicities, is proposed, and we derive the baryon impact factors for two, three and four t-channel gluons. We find that the baryonic impact factor can be written as a sum of three pieces: in the first one a subsystem consisting of two of the three quarks behaves very much like the quark-antiquark pair in gamma* scattering, whereas the third quark acts as a spectator. The second term belongs to the odderon, whereas in the third (C-even) piece all three quarks participate in the scattering. This term is new and has no analogue in gamma* scattering. We also study the small x evolution of gluon radiation for each of these three terms. The first term follows the same pattern of gluon radiation as the gamma*-initiated quark-antiquark dipole, and, in particular, it contains the BFKL evolution followed by the 2-->4 transition vertex (triple Pomeron vertex). The odderon-term is described by the standard BKP evolution, and the baryon couples to both known odderon solutions, the Janik-Wosiek solution and the BLV solution. Finally, the t-channel evolution of the third term starts with a three reggeized gluon state which then, via a new 3-->4 transition vertex, couples to the four gluon (two-Pomeron) state. We briefly discuss a few consequences of these findings, in particular the pattern of unitarization of high energy baryon scattering amplitudes.

NLO inclusive jet production in $k_T$--factorization

The inclusive production of jets in the central region of rapidity is studied in $k_T$-factorization at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD perturbation theory. Calculations are performed in the Regge limit making use of the NLO BFKL results. A jet cone definition is introduced and a proper phase--space separation into multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematic regions is carried out. Two situations are discussed: scattering of highly virtual photons, which requires a symmetric energy scale to separate the impact factors from the gluon Green's function, and hadron-hadron collisions, where a non--symmetric scale choice is needed.

NLO jet production at central rapidities in $k_T$ factorization

In this contribution we discuss the inclusive production of jets in central regions of rapidity in the context of $k_T$-factorization at next-to-leading order (NLO). We work in the Regge limit of QCD and use the NLO BFKL results. A jet cone definition is proposed together with a phase-space separation into multi-Regge and quasi-multi-Regge kinematics. We discuss scattering of highly virtual photons, with a symmetric energy scale to separate the impact factors from the gluon Green's function, and hadron-hadron collisions, with a non-symmetric scale choice.

Off-Shell Scattering Amplitudes for WW Scattering and the Role of the Photon Pole

We derive analytic expressions for high energy $2 \to 2$ off-shell scattering amplitudes of weak vector bosons. They are obtained from six fermion final states in processes of the type $e^+ e^- \to \barν_e + (WW) + ν_e \to \barν_e + (lν)(lν) + ν_e$. As an application we reconsider the unitarity bounds on the Higgs mass. Particular attention is given to the role of the photon exchange which has not been considered in earlier investigations; we find that the photon weakens the bound of the Higgs mass.

Pomeron Vertices in Perturbative QCD in Diffractive Scattering

We analyse the momentum space triple Pomeron vertex in perturbative QCD. In addition to the standard form of this vertex which is used in the context of total cross-sections at high energies and in the QCD reggeon field theory, there exists an alternative form which has to be used in the study of high-mass diffraction. We review and analyse the relation between these two versions. We discuss some implications for the BK-equation. In the second part of our paper we extend this analysis to the Pomeron-Odderon-Odderon vertex.

Quark-Antiquark Exchange in $γ^* γ^*$ Scattering

We calculate the high energy behavior of quark-antiquark exchange in $γ^* γ^*$ elastic scattering by summing, to all orders, the leading double logarithmic contributions of the QCD ladder diagrams. Motivation comes from the LEP data for $σ_{tot}^{γ^* γ^*}$ which indicate the need for secondary reggeon exchange. We show that, for large photon virtualities, this exchange is calculable in pQCD. This applies, in particular, to parts of the LEP kinematic region.

The Bootstrap Conditions for the Gluon Reggeization

Compatibility of gluon Reggeization with s-channel unitarity requires the vertices of the Reggeon interactions to satisfy a series of bootstrap conditions. In order to derive, in the next-to-leading order (NLO), conditions related to the gluon production amplitudes, we calculate the s-channel discontinuities of these amplitudes and compare them with those required by the Reggeization. It turns out that these conditions include the so called strong bootstrap conditions for the kernel and for the impact factors of scattering particles, which were proposed earlier without derivation, and recently were proved to be satisfied. Besides this, there is a new bootstrap condition, which relates a number of Reggeon vertices and the gluon trajectory.

Massive c\bar c g - Calculation in Diffractive DIS and Diffractive D^* - Production at HERA

We calculate the cross section for $c\bar{c}g$-production in diffractive DIS with finite quark masses at zero momentum transfer $t$. The calculation is done in the leading log(1/$x_{P}$) approximation and is valid in the region of high diffractive masses $M$ (small $β$). We apply our cross section formula including both $c{\bar c}$- and $c\bar{c}g$ in a Monte Carlo simulation to diffractive $D^{*\pm}$ meson production at HERA. We compare our predictions to results of H1 using three parameterizations for the unintegrated gluon density.

The (gamma^*-q\bar q)-Reggeon Vertex in Next-to-Leading Order QCD

As a first step towards the computation of the NLO corrections to the photon impact factor in the $γ^*γ^* \to γ^* γ^*$ scattering process, we calculate the one loop corrections to the coupling of the reggeized gluon to the $γ^*\to q\bar{q}$ vertex. We list the results for the Feynman diagrams which contribute: all loop integrations are carried out, and the results are presented in the helicity basis of photon, quark, and antiquark.

The NLO Jet Vertex for Mueller-Navelet and Forward Jets: the Quark Part

We calculate the next-to-leading corrections to the jet vertex which is relevant for the Mueller-Navelet-jets production in p-pbar collisions and for the forward jet cross section in e-p collisions. In this first part we present the results of the vertex for an incoming quark. Particular emphasis is given to the separation of the collinear divergent part and the central region of the produced gluon.

The Process γ^{*}_L+ q \to q\bar{q}g + q: Real Corrections to the Virtual Photon Impact Factor

We calculate, for the longitudinally polarized virtual photon, the cross section of the process γ^{*}+q\to (q\bar{q}g)+q at high energies with a large rapidity gap between the fragmentation system q\bar{q}g and the other quark. This process provides the real corrections of the virtual photon impact factor in the next-to leading order. Evidence is given for the appearance of a new q\bar{q}g Fock-component of the photon state.

QCD analysis of the diffractive structure function F_2^{D(3)}

The proton diffractive structure function $F_2^{D(3)}$ measured in the H1 and ZEUS experiments at HERA is analyzed in terms of both Regge phenomenology and perturbative QCD evolution. A new method determines the values of the Regge intercepts in ``hard'' diffraction, confirming a higher value of the Pomeron intercept than for soft physics. The data are well described by a QCD analysis in which point-like parton distributions, evolving according to the DGLAP equations, are assigned to the leading and sub-leading Regge exchanges. The gluon distributions are found to be quite different for H1 and ZEUS. A {\it global fit} analysis, where a higher twist component is taken from models, allows us to use data in the whole available range in diffractive mass and gives a stable answer for the leading twist contribution. We give sets of quark and gluon parton distributions for the Pomeron, and predictions for the charm and the longitudinal proton diffractive structure function from the QCD fit. An extrapolation to the Tevatron range is compared with CDF data on single diffraction. Conclusions on factorization breaking depend critically whether H1 (strong violation) or ZEUS (compatibility at low $β$) fits are taken into account.

Spin Dependence of Deep Inelastic Diffraction

Using a perturbative model for diffractive interactions, we derive an expression for the polarized diffractive structure function $g_1^D$ in the high energy limit. This structure function is given by the interference of diffractive amplitudes with polarized and unpolarized exchanges. For the polarized exchange we consider both two-gluon and quark-antiquark amplitudes. The polarized diffractive amplitude receives sizable contributions from non-strongly ordered regions in phase space, resulting in a double logarithmic enhancement at small $x$. The resummation of these double logarithmic terms is outlined. We also discuss the transition from our perturbative expression to the nonperturbative region. A first numerical estimate indicates that the perturbative contribution to the spin asymmetry is substantially larger than the nonperturbative one.

A Numerical Estimate of the Small-$k_T$ Region in the BFKL Pomeron

A computer study is performed to estimate the influence of the small-$k_T$ region in the BFKL evolution equation. We consider the small-x region of the deep inelastic structure function $F_2$ and show that the magnitude of the small-$k_T$ region depends on $Q^2$ and $x_B$. We suggest that the width of the $\log k_T^2$-distribution in the final state may serve as an additional footprint of BFKL dynamics. For diffractive dissociation it is shown that the contribution of the infrared region is large - even for large $Q^2$. This contribution becomes smaller only if restrictions on the final state are imposed.

Azimuthal Dependence of Forward-Jet Production in DIS in the High-Energy Limit

As a signal for the BFKL Pomeron in small-x deep inelastic $ep$ scattering, we calculate the azimuthal dependence of the inclusive cross section of forward jets relative to the outgoing electron. For not very large differences in rapidity between the current jet and the forward jet the cross section peaks at $π/2$. For increasing rapidity BFKL dynamics predicts a decorrelation in the azimuthal dependence between the electron and the forward jet.

Azimuthal Distribution of Quark-Antiquark Jets in DIS Diffractive Dissociation

We investigate the azimuthal distribution of quark-antiquark jets in DIS diffractive dissociation with large transverse momentum. In this kinematical region the matrix element is expressed in terms of the gluon structure function. For the transverse part of the cross section we find a $\cos(2 ϕ)$-distribution with the maximum at $ϕ= \pm π/2$, i.e.\ the jets prefer a direction perpendicular to the electron plane. This is in contrast to boson gluon fusion where the $q\bar{q}$ jet cross section for transversely polarized bosons peaks at $ϕ=0$ and $ϕ=π$. We discuss the origin of this striking difference and present numerical results relevant for the diffractive dissociation at HERA.

Flavor Singlet Contribution to the Structure Function $g_1$ at Small-x

The singlet contribution to the $g_1(x,Q^2)$ structure function is calculated in the double-logarithmic approximation of perturbative QCD in the region $x \ll 1$. Double logarithmic contributions of the type $(α_s \ln ^2 (1/x))^k$ which are not included in the GLAP evolution equations are shown to give a power-like rise at small-x which is much stronger than the extrapolation of the GLAP expressions. The dominant contribution is due to the gluons which, in contrast to the unpolarized case, mix with the fermions also in the region $x \ll 1$. The two main reasons why the small-x behavior of the double logarithmic approximation is so much stronger than the usual GLAP evolution are: the larger kinematical region of integration (in particular, no ordering in transverse momentum) and the contributions from non-ladder diagrams.

Quark-Antiquark Production in DIS Diffractive Dissociation

We calculate the cross section for the production of two jets with large transverse momenta $\kf^2$ in DIS diffractive dissociation for both transverse and longitudinally polarized photons. The scale which defines the hardness of the pomeron is found to be $\kf^2\frac{Q^2+M^2}{M^2}$. We present analytic expressions and discuss numerical results relevant for the diffractive dissociation at HERA.

Nonsinglet Contributions to the Structure Function g1 at Small-x

Nonsinglet contributions to the $g_1(x,Q^2)$ structure function are calculated in the double-logarithmic approximation of perturbative QCD in the region $x \ll 1$. Double logarithmic contributions of the type $(α_s \ln ^2 (1/x))^k$ which are not included in the GLAP evolution equations are shown to give a stronger rise at small-x than the extrapolation of the GLAP expressions. Further enhancement in the small-x region is due to non-ladder Feynman graphs which in the DLA of the unpolarized structure functions do not contribute. Compared to the conventional GLAP method (where neither the whole kinematical region which gives the double logs nor the non-ladder graphs are taken into account) our results lead to a growth at small-x which, for HERA parameters, can be larger by up to factor of 10 or more.
