Long rotational coherence times of molecules in a magnetic trap

Polar molecules in superpositions of rotational states exhibit long-range dipolar interactions, but maintaining their coherence in a trapped sample is a challenge. We present calculations that show many laser-coolable molecules have convenient rotational transitions that are exceptionally insensitive to magnetic fields. We verify this experimentally for CaF where we find a transition with sensitivity below 5 Hz G$^{-1}$ and use it to demonstrate a rotational coherence time of 6.4(8) ms in a magnetic trap. Simulations suggest it is feasible to extend this to more than 1 s using a smaller cloud in a biased magnetic trap.

Product lambda-doublet ratios for the O(3P) + D2 reaction: A mechanistic imprint

In the last decade, the development of theoretical methods have allowed chemists to reproduce and explain almost all of the experimental data associated with elementary atom plus diatom collisions. However, there are still a few examples where theory cannot account yet for experimental results. This is the case for the preferential population of one of the $Λ$-doublet states produced by chemical reactions. In particular, recent measurements of the OD($^2Π$) product of the O($^3$P) + D$_2$ reaction have shown a clear preference for the $Π(A')$ $Λ$-doublet states, in apparent contradiction with {\em ab initio} calculations, which predict a larger reactivity on the $A"$ potential energy surface. Here we present a method to calculate the $Λ$-doublet ratio when concurrent potential energy surfaces participate in the reaction. It accounts for the experimental $Λ$-doublet populations via explicit consideration of the stereodynamics of the process. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the propensity of the $Π(A')$ state is a consequence of the different mechanisms of the reaction on the two concurrent potential energy surfaces.

Ultracold RbSr molecules can be formed by magnetoassociation

We investigate the interactions between ultracold alkali metal atoms and closed-shell atoms using electronic structure calculations on the prototype system Rb+Sr. There are molecular bound states that can be tuned across atomic thresholds with magnetic field, and there are previously neglected terms in the collision Hamiltonian that can produce zero-energy Feshbach resonances with significant widths. The largest effect comes from the interaction-induced variation of the Rb hyperfine coupling. The resonances may be used to form paramagnetic polar molecules if the magnetic field can be controlled precisely enough.

Hyperfine structure in the microwave spectra of ultracold polar molecules

We investigate the microwave spectra of ultracold alkali metal dimers in magnetic, electric and combined fields, taking account of the hyperfine structure due to the nuclear spins. We consider the molecules 41K87Rb and 7Li133Cs, which are the targets of current experiments and demonstrate two extremes of large and small nuclear quadrupole coupling. We calculate the frequencies and intensities of transitions that may be used to transfer ultracold molecules between hyperfine states in a magnetic field, employing different polarizations of microwave radiation. In an electric field, the hyperfine levels display narrow avoided crossings at specific fields that we explain in terms of molecular alignment. The hyperfine splittings that arise in electric fields may hinder individual addressing in schemes to use ultracold molecules in quantum computation, but the structure of the spectra is suppressed in combined fields.

Manipulating ultracold polar molecules with microwave radiation: the influence of hyperfine structure

We calculate the microwave spectra of ultracold KRb alkali metal dimers, including hyperfine interactions and in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. We show that microwave transitions may be used to transfer molecules between different hyperfine states, but only because of the presence of nuclear quadrupole interactions. Hyperfine splittings may also complicate the use of ultracold molecules for quantum computing. The spectrum of molecules oriented in electric fields may be simplified dramatically by applying a simultaneous magnetic field.

The hyperfine energy levels of alkali metal dimers: ground-state homonuclear molecules in magnetic fields

We investigate the hyperfine energy levels and Zeeman splittings for homonuclear alkali-metal dimers in low-lying rotational and vibrational states, which are important for experiments designed to produce quantum gases of deeply bound molecules. We carry out density-functional theory (DFT) calculations of the nuclear hyperfine coupling constants. For nonrotating states, the zero-field splittings are determined almost entirely by the scalar nuclear spin-spin coupling constant. By contrast with the heteronuclear case, the total nuclear spin remains a good quantum number in a magnetic field. We also investigate levels with rotational quantum number N = 1, which have long-range anisotropic quadrupole-quadrupole interactions and may be collisionally stable. For these states the splitting is dominated by nuclear quadrupole coupling for most of the alkali-metal dimers and the Zeeman splittings are considerably more complicated.
