Detailed analysis of two-boson exchange in parity-violating e-p scattering

We present a comprehensive study of two-boson exchange (TBE) corrections in parity-violating electron-proton elastic scattering. Within a hadronic framework, we compute contributions from box (and crossed box) diagrams in which the intermediate states are described by nucleons and Delta baryons. The Delta contribution is found to be much smaller than the nucleon one at backward angles (small epsilon), but becomes dominant in the forward scattering limit (epsilon -> 1), where the nucleon contribution vanishes. The dependence of the corrections on the input hadronic form factors is small for Q^2 < 1 GeV^2, but becomes significant at larger Q^2. We compute the nucleon and Delta TBE corrections relevant for recent and planned parity-violating experiments, with the total corrections ranging from -1% for forward angles to 1-2% at backward kinematics.

Two-photon exchange corrections to the pion form factor

We compute two-photon exchange corrections to the electromagnetic form factor of the pion, taking into account the finite size of the pion. Compared to the soft-photon approximation for the infrared divergent contribution which neglects hadron structure effects, the corrections are found to be < 1% for small Q^2 (Q^2 < 0.1 GeV^2), but increase to several percent for Q^2 > 1 GeV^2 at extreme backward angles.

Effect of two-boson exchange on parity-violating e-p scattering

We compute the corrections from two-photon and photon-Z exchange in parity-violating elastic electron-proton scattering, used to extract the strange form factors of the proton. We use a hadronic formalism that successfully reconciled the earlier discrepancy in the proton's electron to magnetic form factor ratio, suitably extended to the weak sector. Implementing realistic electroweak form factors, we find effects of the order 2-3% at Q^2 < 0.1 GeV^2, which are largest at backward angles, and have a strong Q^2 dependence at low Q^2. Two-boson contributions to the weak axial current are found to be enhanced at low Q^2 and for forward angles. We provide corrections at kinematics relevant for recent and upcoming parity-violating experiments.

Eikonal analysis of Coulomb distortion in quasi-elastic electron scattering

An eikonal expansion is used to provide systematic corrections to the eikonal approximation through order $1/k^2$, where $k$ is the wave number. Electron wave functions are obtained for the Dirac equation with a Coulomb potential. They are used to investigate distorted-wave matrix elements for quasi-elastic electron scattering from a nucleus. A form of effective-momentum approximation is obtained using trajectory-dependent eikonal phases and focusing factors. Fixing the Coulomb distortion effects at the center of the nucleus, the often-used ema approximation is recovered. Comparisons of these approximations are made with full calculations using the electron eikonal wave functions. The ema results are found to agree well with the full calculations.

Coulomb corrections in quasi-elastic scattering based on the eikonal expansion for electron wave functions

An eikonal expansion is developed in order to provide systematic corrections to the eikonal approximation through order 1/k^2, where k is the wave number. The expansion is applied to wave functions for the Klein-Gordon equation and for the Dirac equation with a Coulomb potential. Convergence is rapid at energies above about 250 MeV. Analytical results for the eikonal wave functions are obtained for a simple analytical form of the Coulomb potential of a nucleus. They are used to investigate distorted-wave matrix elements for quasi-elastic electron scattering from a nucleus. Focusing factors are shown to arise from the corrections to the eikonal approximation. A precise form of the effective-momentum approximation is developed by use of a momentum shift that depends on the electron's energy loss.

$Δ$ resonance contribution to two-photon exchange in electron-proton scattering

We calculate the effects on the elastic electron-proton scattering cross section of the two-photon exchange contribution with an intermediate $Δ$ resonance. The $Δ$ two-photon exchange contribution is found to be smaller in magnitude than the previously evaluated nucleon contribution, with an opposite sign at backward scattering angles. The sum of the nucleon and $Δ$ two-photon exchange corrections has an angular dependence compatible with both the polarisation transfer and the Rosenbluth methods of measuring the nucleon electromagnetic form factors.

Two-photon exchange in elastic electron-nucleon scattering

A detailed study of two-photon exchange in unpolarized and polarized elastic electron--nucleon scattering is presented, taking particular account of nucleon finite size effects. Contributions from nucleon elastic intermediate states are found to have a strong angular dependence, which leads to a partial resolution of the discrepancy between the Rosenbluth and polarization transfer measurements of the proton electric to magnetic form factor ratio, G_E/G_M. The two-photon exchange contribution to the longitudinal polarization transfer P_L is small, whereas the contribution to the transverse polarization transfer P_T is enhanced at backward angles by several percent, increasing with Q^2. This gives rise to a small, ~3% suppression of G_E/G_M obtained from the polarization transfer ratio P_T/P_L at large Q^2. We also compare the two-photon exchange effects with data on the ratio of e^+ p to e^- p cross sections, which is predicted to be enhanced at backward angles. Finally, we evaluate the corrections to the form factors of the neutron, and estimate the elastic intermediate state contribution to the ^3He form factors.

$γ^{*}NΔ$ Form Factors from a Relativistic Dynamical Model of Pion Electroproduction

We obtain the electromagnetic form factors of the $γNΔ$ transition by analyzing recent pion-electroproduction data using a fully relativistic dynamical model. Special care is taken to satisfy Ward-Takahashi identities for the Born term in the presence of form factors thereby allowing the use of realistic electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon and pion. We parametrize the $Q^2$ dependence of the {\it bare} $γN Δ$ form factors by a three-parameter form which is consistent with the asymptotic behavior inferred from QCD. The parameters of the bare $γN Δ$ form factors are the only free parameters of the model and are fitted to the differential cross-section and multipole-analysis data up to $Q^2=4$ (GeV/c)$^2$ in the $Δ(1232)$-resonance region. This analysis emphasizes the significance of the pion-cloud effects in the extraction of the resonance parameters.

Effects of perturbative exchanges in a QCD-string model

The QCD-string model for baryons derived by Simonov and used for the calculation of baryon magnetic moments in a previous paper is extended to include also perturbative gluon and meson exchanges. The mass spectrum of the baryon multiplet is studied. For the meson interaction either the pseudoscalar or pseudovector coupling is used. Predictions are compared with the experimental data. Besides these exchanges the influence of excited quark orbitals on the baryon ground state are considered by performing a multichannel calculation. The nucleon-Delta splitting increases due to the mixing of higher quark states while the baryon magnetic momenta decrease. The multichannel calculation with perturbative exchanges is shown to yield reasonable magnetic moments while the mass spectrum is close to experiment.

The Feynman-Schwinger (world-line) representation in perturbative QCD

The proper time path integral representation is derived explicitly for an arbitrary $n$-point amplitude in QCD. In the standard perturbation theory the formalism allows to sum up the leading subseries, e.g. yielding double-logarithm Sudakov asymptotics for form factors. Correspondence with the standard perturbation theory is established and connection to the Bern-Kosower-Strassler method is illustrated.

The Feynman-Schwinger representation in QCD

The proper time path integral representation is derived explicitly for Green's functions in QCD. After an introductory analysis of perturbative properties, the total gluonic field is separated in a rigorous way into a nonperturbative background and valence gluon part. For nonperturbative contributions the background perturbation theory is used systematically, yielding two types of expansions, illustrated by direct physical applications. As an application, we discuss the collinear singularities in the Feynman-Schwinger representation formalism. Moreover, the generalization to nonzero temperature is made and expressions for partition functions in perturbation theory and nonperturbative background are explicitly written down.

Relativistic and non-relativistic studies of nuclear matter

Recently we showed that while the tensor force plays an important role in nuclear matter saturation in non-relativistic studies, it does not do so in relativistic studies. The reason behind this is the role of $M^*$, the sum of nucleon mass and its attractive self-energy in nuclear matter. Yet nonrelativistic calculations at a certain level of approximation are far less difficult than comparative relativistic calculation. Naturally the question arises if one can modify a nonrelativistic method, say, the lowest order Brueckner theory (LOBT), to reproduce approximately the results of a relativistic calculation. While a many body effect, the role of $M^*$ is intrinsically relativistic. It cannot be simulated by adding multi-body forces in a nonrelativistic calculation. Instead, we examine if adding a set of recipes to LOBT can be useful for the purpose. We point out that the differences in the results arise principally from two reasons - first, the role of $M^*$ and second, the disappearance in a relativistic treatment of the gap in the hole and particle energy spectra, present in LOBT. In this paper we show that LOBT, modified by {\it recipes} to remove these two reasons, generates results quite close to those of Dirac-Brueckner theory.

Lorentz covariance of three-dimensional equations

We show how the invariance under the charge conjugation and CPT symmetry, present in the Bethe-Salpeter equation, is lost in the reduction to certain relativistic three-dimensional equations. This in particular leads to the breakdown of the standard Lorentz structure and renormalization procedures for the resulting single-particle propagators. We formulate the equal-time approximation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the form which manifestly satisfies the above symmetries, and apply it to the description of the pion-nucleon interaction in a dynamical model based on hadron exchanges. We also consider the one-body limit of various three-dimensional equations for the case of $t$- and $u$-channel one-particle-exchange potential.

Nuclear Matter Studies with Density-dependent Meson-Nucleon Coupling Constants

Due to the internal structure of the nucleon, we should expect, in general, that the effective meson nucleon parameters may change in nuclear medium. We study such changes by using a chiral confining model of the nucleon. We use density-dependent masses for all mesons except the pion. Within a Dirac-Brueckner analysis, based on the relativistic covariant structure of the NN amplitude, we show that the effect of such a density dependence in the NN interaction on the saturation properties of nuclear matter, while not large, is quite significant. Due to the density dependence of the $g_{σNN}$, as predicted by the chiral confining model, we find, in particular, a looping behavior of the binding energy at saturation as a function of the saturation density. A simple model is described, which exhibits looping and which is shown to be mainly caused by the presence of a peak in the density dependence of the medium modified $σN$ coupling constant at low density. The effect of density dependence of the coupling constants and the meson masses tends to improve the results for $E/A$ and density of nuclear matter at saturation. From the present study we see that the relationship between binding energy and saturation density may not be as universal as found in nonrelativistic studies and that more model dependence is exhibited once medium modifications of the basic nuclear interactions are considered.

O(4) Expansion of the ladder Bethe-Salpeter equation

The Bethe-Salpeter amplitude is expanded on a hyperspherical basis, thereby reducing the original 4-dimensional integral equation into an infinite set of coupled 1-dimensional ones. It is shown that this representation offers a highly accurate method to determine numerically the bound state solutions. For generic cases only a few hyperspherical waves are needed to achieve convergence, both for the ground state as well as for radially or orbitally excited states. The wave function is reconstructed for several cases and in particular it is shown that it becomes independent of the relative time in the nonrelativistic regime.

Low energy theorem for scalar and vector interactions of a composite spin-1/2 system

Scalar and vector interactions, with the scalar interaction coupled to a composite spin-1/2 system so as to cause a shift of its mass, are shown to obey a low-energy theorem which guarantees that the second order interaction due to z-graphs is the same as for a point Dirac particle. Off-shell and contact interactions appropriate to the composite system cancel and this is verified in a model of a composite fermion. The result provides a justification for the use of the Dirac equation as it has been in relativistic nuclear scattering and mean field theories.
