Alternative Self-dual Gravity in Eight Dimensions

We develop an alternative Ashtekar formalism in eight dimensions. In fact, using a MacDowell-Mansouri physical framework and a self-dual curvature symmetry we propose an action in eight dimensions in which the Levi-Civita tenor with eight indices plays a key role. We explicitly show that such an action contains number of linear, quadratic and cubic terms in the Riemann tensor, Ricci tensor and scalar curvature. In particular, the linear term is reduced to the Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant in eight dimensions. We prove that such a reduced action is equivalent to the Lovelock action in eight dimensions.

Dirac Equation in Four Time and Four Space Dimensions

The Dirac equation in four time and four space dimensions (or (4+4)-dimensions) is considered. Step by step we show that such an equation admits Majorana and Weyl solutions. In order to obtain the Majorana or Weyl spinors we used a method based on the construction of Clifford algebra in terms of 2x2-matrices. We argue that our approach can be useful in supergravity, superstrings and qubit theory.

Some Mathematical and Physical Remarks on Surreal Numbers

We make a number of observations on Conway surreal number theory which may be useful, for further developments, in both in mathematics and theoretical physics. In particular, we argue that the concepts of surreal numbers and matroids can be linked. Moreover, we established a relation between the Gonshor approach on surreal numbers and tensors. We also comment about the possibility to connect surreal numbers with supesymmetry. In addition, we comment about possible relation between surreal numbers and fractal theory. Finally, we argue that the surreal structure may provide a different mathematical tools in the understanding of singularities in both high energy physics and gravitation.

Phirotopes, Super p-branes and Qubit Theory

The phirotope is a complex generalization of the concept of chirotope in oriented matroid theory. Our main goal in this work is to establish a link between phirotopes, super p-branes and qubit theory. For this purpose we first discuss maximally supersymmetric solutions of 11-dimensional supergravity from the point of view of the oriented matroid theory. We also clarify a possible connection between oriented matroid theory and supersymmetry via the Grassmann-Plücker relations. These links are in turn useful for explaining how our approach can be connected with qubit theory.

Towards an Alternative Gravitational Theory

In 1680 Cassini proposed oval curves as alternative trajectories for the visible planets around the sun. The Cassini ovals were of course overshadow by the Kepler's first law (1609), namely the planets move around the sun describing conic orbits. Here we describe the possibility that the Cassini's idea works at larger or smaller scales. Indeed, we consider the Spiric curves (which are a generalization of the Cassini oval) and present the first steps towards a Spiric gravitational theory. We show that from our formalism an ellipse associated with a planet can be obtained as a particular case.

Geometric Structure of Higher-Dimensional Spheres

We explain in some detail the geometric structure of spheres in any dimension. Our approach may be helpful for other homogeneous spaces (with other signatures) such as the de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces. We apply the procedure to the recently proposed division-algebras/Poincaré-conjecture correspondence. Moreover, we explore the possibility of a connection between N-qubit system and the Hopf maps. We also discuss the possible links of our work with squashed-spheres in supergravity and pseudo-spheres in oriented matroid theory.

Higher dimensional black holes as constrained systems

We construct a Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulation for charged black holes in a d-dimensional maximally symmetric spherical space. By considering first new variables that give raise to an interesting dimensional reduction of the problem, we show that the introduction of a charge term is compatible with classical solutions to Einstein equations. In fact, we derive the well-known solutions for charged black holes, specially in the case of d=4, where the Reissner-Nordström solution holds, without reference to Einstein field equations. We argue that our procedure may be of help for clarifying symmetries and dynamics of black holes, as well as some quantum aspects.

SL(2,R)-geometric phase space and (2+2)-dimensions

We propose an alternative geometric mathematical structure for arbitrary phase space. The main guide in our approach is the hidden SL(2,R)-symmetry which acts on the phase space changing coordinates by momenta and vice versa. We show that the SL(2,R)-symmetry is implicit in any symplectic structure. We also prove that in any sensible physical theory based on the SL(2,R)-symmetry the signature of the flat target "spacetime" must be associated with either one-time and one-space or at least two-time and two-space coordinates. We discuss the consequences as well as possible applications of our approach on different physical scenarios.

Qubits and oriented matroids in four time and four space dimensions

We establish a connection between 4-rebits (real qubits) and the Nambu-Goto action with target `spacetime' of four time and four space dimensions ((4+4)-dimensions)). We motivate the subject with three observations. The first one is that a 4-rebit contains exactly the same number of degree of freedom as a complex 3-qubit and therefore 4-rebits are special in the sense of division algebras. Secondly, the (4+4)-dimensions can be splitted as (4+4)=(3+1)+(1+3) and therefore they are connected with an ordinary (1+3)-spacetime and with changed signature (3+1)-spacetime. Finally, we show how geometric aspects of 4-rebits can be related to the chirotope concept of oriented matroid theory.

Scale-Free Growing Networks and Gravity

We propose a possible relation between complex networks and gravity. Our guide in our proposal is the power-law distribution of the node degree in network theory and the information approach to gravity. The established bridge may allow us to carry geometric mathematical structures, which are considered in gravitational theories, to probabilistic aspects studied in the framework of complex networks and vice versa.

A Spinning Particle in a Mobius Strip

We develop the classical and quantum theory of a spinning particle moving in a Mobius strip. We first propose a Lagrangian for such a system and then we proceed to quantize the system via the constraint Hamiltonian system formalism. Our results may be of particular interest in several physical scenarios, including solid state physics and optics. In fact, the present work may shed some new light on the recent discoveries on condensed matter concerning topological insulators.

Complexified sigma model and duality

We show that the equations of motion associated with a complexified sigma-model action do not admit manifest dual SO(n,n) symmetry. In the process we discover new type of numbers which we called `complexoids' in order to emphasize their close relation with both complex numbers and matroids. It turns out that the complexoids allow to consider the analogue of the complexified sigma-model action but with (1+1)-worldsheet metric, instead of Euclidean-worldsheet metric. Our observations can be useful for further developments of complexified quantum mechanics.

Higher Dimensional Cosmology: Relations among the radii of two homogeneous spaces

We study a cosmological model in 1+D+d dimensions where D dimensions are associated with the usual Friedman-Robertson-Walker type metric with radio a(t) and d dimensions corresponds to an additional homogeneous space with radio b(t). We make a general analysis of the field equations and then we obtain solutions involving the two cosmological radii, a(t) and b(t). The particular case D=3, d=1 is studied in some detail.

Some Exceptional Cases in Mathematics: Euler Characteristic, Division Algebras, Cross Vector Product and Fano Matroid

We review remarkable results in several mathematical scenarios, including graph theory, division algebras, cross product formalism and matroid theory. Specifically, we mention the following subjects: (1) the Euler relation in graph theory, and its higher-dimensional generalization, (2) the dimensional theorem for division algebras and in particular the Hurwitz theorem for normed division algebras, (3) the vector cross product dimensional possibilities, (4) some theorems for graphs and matroids. Our main goal is to motivate a possible research work in these four topics, putting special interest in their possible links.

Higher Dimensional Gravity and Farkas Property in Oriented Matroid Theory

We assume gravity in a $d$-dimensional manifold $M$ and consider a splitting of the form $M=M_{p}\times M_{q}$, with $d=p+q$. The most general two-block metric associated with $M_{p}$ and $M_{q}$ is used to derive the corresponding Einstein-Hilbert action $\mathcal{S}$. We focus on the special case of two distinct conformal factors $ψ$ and $ϕ$ ($ψ$ for the metric in $M_{p}$ and $ϕ$ for the metric in $M_{q}$), and we write the action $\mathcal{S}$ in the form $\mathcal{S=S}_{p}\mathcal{+S}%_{q} $, where $\mathcal{S}_{p}$ and $\mathcal{S}_{q}$ are actions associated with $M_{p}$ and $M_{q}$, respectively. We show that a simplified action is obtained precisely when $ψ=ϕ^{-1}$. In this case, we find that under the duality transformation $ϕ\leftrightarrow ϕ^{-1}$, the action $\mathcal{S}_{p}$ for the $M_{p}$-space or the action $\mathcal{S}%_{q}$ for the $M_{q}$-space remain invariant, but not both. This result establishes an analogy between Farkas property in oriented matroid theory and duality in general relativity. Furthermore, we argue that our approach can be used in several physical scenarios such as 2t physics and cosmology.

Oriented matroid theory and loop quantum gravity in (2+2) and eight dimensions

We establish a connection between oriented matroid theory and loop quantum gravity in (2+2) (two time and two space dimensions) and 8-dimensions. We start by observing that supersymmetry implies that the structure constants of the real numbers, complex numbers, quaternions and octonions can be identified with the chirotope concept. This means, among other things, that normed divisions algebras, which are only possible in 1,2, 4 or 8-dimensions, are linked to oriented matroid theory. Therefore, we argue that the possibility for developing loop quantum gravity in 8-dimensions must be taken as important alternative. Moreover, we show that in 4-dimensions, loop quantum gravity theories in the (1+3) or (0+4) signatures are not the only possibilities. In fact, we show that loop quantum gravity associated with the (2+2)-signature may also be an interesting physical structure.

Qubits and chirotopes

We show that qubit and chirotope concepts are closely related. In fact, we prove that the qubit concept leads to a generalization of the chirotope concept, which we call qubitope. Moreover, we argue that a possible qubitope theory may suggest interesting applications of oriented matroid theory in at least three physical contexts, in which qubits make their appearance, namely string theory, black holes and quantum information.

Issues of duality in Abelian Gauge Theory and in Linearized Gravity

We start by describing two of the main proposals for duality in Abelian gauge theories, namely $F$(ield strength)-duality approach and the $S$% -duality formalism. We then discuss how $F$-duality and $S$-duality can be applied to the case of linearized gravity. By emphasizing the similarities and differences between these two type of dualities we explore the possibility of combining them in just one duality formalism.

Are 1+1 and 2+2 exceptional signatures?

We prove that 1+1 and 2+2 target `spacetimes' of a 0-brane are exceptional signatures. Our proof is based on the requirement of SL(2,R) and `Lorentz' symmetries of a first order lagrangian. Using a special kind of 0-brane called `quatl', we also show that the exceptional signatures 1+1 and 2+2 are closely related. Moreover, we argue that the 2+2 target `spacetime' can be understood either as 2+2 worldvolume `spacetime' or as `1+1-matrix-brane'. The possibility that the exceptional 2+2-signature implies an exceptional chirotope is briefly outlined.

Relativistic Top Deviation Equation and Gravitational Waves

By using the relativistic top theory, we derive a relativistic top deviation equation. This equation turns out to be a generalization of the geodesic deviation equation for a pair of nearby point particles. In fact, we show that when the spin angular momentum tensor associated to the top vanishes, such a relativistic top deviation equation reduces to the geodesic deviation equation for spinless point particles. Just as the geodesic deviation equation for spinless particles can be used to investigate the detection of gravitational waves, our generalized formula for a relativistic top can be used to study the gravitational wave background. Our formulation may be of special interest to detect the inflationary gravitational waves via the polarization of the cosmic background radiation.

Matroid Theory and Chern-Simons

It is shown that matroid theory may provide a natural mathematical framework for a duality symmetries not only for quantum Yang-Mills physics, but also for M-theory. Our discussion is focused in an action consisting purely of the Chern-Simons term, but in principle the main ideas can be applied beyond such an action. In our treatment the theorem due to Thistlethwaite, which gives a relationship between the Tutte polynomial for graphs and Jones polynomial for alternating knots and links, plays a central role. Before addressing this question we briefly mention some important aspects of matroid theory and we point out a connection between the Fano matroid and D=11 supergravity. Our approach also seems to be related to loop solutions of quantum gravity based in Ashtekar formalism.

Matroid Theory and Supergravity

In this work, we consider matroid theory. After presenting three different (but equivalent) definitions of matroids, we mention some of the most important theorems of such theory. In particular, we note that every matroid has a dual matroid and that a matroid is regular if and only if it is binary and includes no Fano matroid or its dual. We show a connection between this last theorem and octonions which at the same time, as it is known, are related to the Englert's solution of D = 11 supergravity. Specifically, we find a relation between the dual of Fano matroid and D = 11 supergravity. Possible applications to M-theory are speculated upon.

Is nonsymmetric gravity related to string theory?

In this work we raise the question whether nonsymmetric gravity and string theory are related. We start making the observation, that the gravitational field $ g_{μν}$ and the nonsymmetric gauge field $ A_{μν}$ arising in the low energy limit in the string theory are exactly the same two basic fields used in four dimensions in nonsymmetric gravity. We argue, that this connection between nonsymmetric gravity and string theory at the level of the gauge fields $ g_{μν}$ and $ A_{μν}$ is not, however, reflected at the level of the corresponding associated actions. In an effort to find a connection between such an actions we discover a new gravitational action, which suggests an alternative version of the bosonic string in which the target and the world-volume metrics are unified.

From a Relativistic Point Particle to String Theory

Using a classical action associated to a point-particle in (1+1)-dimensions the classical string theory is derived. In connection with this result two aspects are clarified: First, the point particle in (1+1)-dimensions is not an ordinary relativistic system, but rather a some kind of a relativistic top; and second, through the quantization of such a kind of top the ordinary string theory is not obtained, but rather a $σ$-model associated to a non-compact group which may be understood as an extended string theory.
