Phase estimation with limited coherence

We investigate the ultimate precision limits for quantum phase estimation in terms of the coherence, $C$, of the probe. For pure states, we give the minimum estimation variance attainable, $V(C)$, and the optimal state, in the asymptotic limit when the probe system size, $n$, is large. We prove that pure states are optimal only if $C$ scales as $n$ with a sufficiently large proportionality factor, and that the rank of the optimal state increases with decreasing $C$, eventually becoming full-rank. We show that the variance exhibits a Heisenberg-like scaling, $V(C) \sim a_n/C^2$, where $a_n$ decreases to $π^2/3$ as $n$ increases, leading to a dimension-independent relation.

Optimal Cloning of Quantum States with a Fixed Failure Rate

Perfect cloning of a known set of states with arbitrary prior probabilities is possible if we allow the cloner to sometimes fail completely. In the optimal case the probability of failure is at its minimum allowed by the laws of quantum mechanics. Here we show that it is possible to lower the failure rate below that of the perfect probabilistic cloner but the price to pay is that the clones are not perfect; the global fidelity is less than one. We determine the optimal fidelity of a cloner with a Fixed Failure Rate (FFR cloner) in the case of a pair of known states. Optimality is shown to be attainable by a measure-and-prepare protocol in the limit of infinitely many clones. The optimal protocol consists of discrimination with a fixed rate of inconclusive outcome followed by preparation of the appropriate clones. The convergence shows a symmetry-breaking second-order phase transition in the fidelity of the approximate infinite clones.

Optimal discrimination of quantum states with a fixed rate of inconclusive outcomes

In this paper we present the solution to the problem of optimally discriminating among quantum states, i.e., identifying the states with maximum probability of success when a certain fixed rate of inconclusive answers is allowed. By varying the inconclusive rate, the scheme optimally interpolates between Unambiguous and Minimum Error discrimination, the two standard approaches to quantum state discrimination. We introduce a very general method that enables us to obtain the solution in a wide range of cases and give a complete characterization of the minimum discrimination error as a function of the rate of inconclusive answers. A critical value of this rate is identified that coincides with the minimum failure probability in the cases where unambiguous discrimination is possible and provides a natural generalization of it when states cannot be unambiguously discriminated. The method is illustrated on two explicit examples: discrimination of two pure states with arbitrary prior probabilities and discrimination of trine states.
