A template method to measure the $t \bar t$ polarisation

We develop a template method for the measurement of the polarisation of $t \bar t$ pairs produced in hadron collisions. The method would allow to extract the individual fractions of $t_L \bar t_L$, $t_R \bar t_R$, $t_L \bar t_R$ and $t_R \bar t_L$ pairs with a fit to data, where $L,R$ refer to the polarisation along any axis. These polarisation fractions have not been independently measured at present. Secondarily, the method also provides the net polarisation of $t$ and $\bar t$, as well as their spin correlation for arbitrary axes.

Anomaly detection from mass unspecific jet tagging

We introduce a novel anomaly search method based on (i) jet tagging to select interesting events, which are less likely to be produced by background processes; (ii) comparison of the untagged and tagged samples to single out features (such as bumps produced by the decay of new particles) in the latter. We demonstrate the usefulness of this method by applying it to a final state with two massive boosted jets: for the new physics benchmarks considered, the signal significance increases an order of magnitude, up to a factor of 40. We compare to other anomaly detection methods in the literature and discuss possible generalisations.

Improved tests of entanglement and Bell inequalities with LHC tops

We discuss quantum entanglement in top pair production at the LHC. Near the $t \bar t$ threshold, entanglement observables are enhanced by suppressing the contribution of $q \bar q$ subprocesses, which is achieved by a simple cut on the velocity of the $t \bar t$ system in the laboratory frame. Furthermore, we design new observables that directly measure the relevant combinations of $t\bar t$ spin correlation coefficients involved in the measurement of entanglement and Bell inequalities. As a result, the statistical sensitivity is enhanced, up to a factor of 7 for Bell inequalities near threshold.

Semi-dark Higgs decays: sweeping the Higgs neutrino floor

We study exotic Higgs decays $h \to Z X$, with $X$ an invisible beyond the Standard Model (SM) particle, resulting in a semi-dark final state. Such exotic Higgs decays may occur in theories of axion-like-particles (ALPs), dark photons or pseudoscalar mediators between the SM and dark matter. The SM process $h\to Zν\barν$ represents an irreducible "neutrino floor" background to these new physics searches, providing also a target experimental sensitivity for them. We analyze $h \to Z + \text{invisible}$ searches at the LHC and a future ILC, showing that these exotic Higgs decays can yield sensitivity to unexplored regions of parameter space for ALPs and dark matter models.

Taming modeling uncertainties with Mass Unspecific Supervised Tagging

We address the modeling dependence of jet taggers built using the method of Mass Unspecific Supervised Tagging, by using two different parton showering and hadronisation schemes. We find that the modeling dependence of the results - estimated by using different schemes in the design of the taggers and applying them to the same type of data - is rather small, even if the jet substructure varies significantly between the two schemes. These results add great value to the use of generic supervised taggers for new physics searches.

WIMP Dark Matter in the U$μν$SSM

The U$μν$SSM is a $U(1)'$ extension of the $μν$SSM supersymmetric model, where baryon-number-violating operators as well as explicit mass terms are forbidden, and the potential domain wall problem is avoided. The gauge anomaly-cancellation conditions impose the presence of exotic quark superfields in the spectrum of U$μν$SSM models, and allow the presence of several singlet superfields under the standard model gauge group, in addition to the right-handed neutrino superfields. The gauge structure implies an additional discrete $Z_2$ symmetry in the superpotential, ensuring the stability of a singlet which behaves as WIMP dark matter without invoking $R$-parity. We analyze this novel possibility in detail, using the fermionic component of the singlet as the dark matter candidate. In particular, we compute its amount of relic density via $Z'$, Higgs-right sneutrino and dark matter mediated annihilations, and its potential signals in dark matter direct detection experiments. The constraints on the parameter space due to $Z'$ direct searches at the LHC are imposed in the analysis, as well as those from the hadronization inside the detector of the exotic quarks. Large regions of the parameter space turn out to be in the reach of the upcoming Darwin experiment.

$U(1)'$ extensions of the $μν$SSM

In the $μν$SSM, the presence of $R$-parity violating couplings involving right-handed (RH) neutrinos solves simultaneously the $μ$- and $ν$-problems. We explore extensions of the $μν$SSM adding a $U(1)'$ gauge group, which provides the RH neutrinos with a non-vanishing charge. In these models, dubbed U$μν$SSM, the anomaly cancellation conditions impose the presence of exotic quarks in the spectrum that are vector-like under the standard model (SM) gauge group: either three pairs $SU(2)$ quark singlets, or a pair of quark singlets together with a pair of quark doublets. Several extra singlets under the SM group can also be present, with the $U(1)'$ charges making distinctions among them, and therefore allowing different types of couplings. Some of these singlets dynamically generate Majorana masses for the RH neutrinos, and others can be candidates for dark matter. The useful characteristics of models with $U(1)'$s are also present in U$μν$SSM models: baryon-number-violating operators as well as explicit Majorana masses and $μ$ terms are forbidden, and the domain wall problem is avoided. The phenomenology of U$μν$SSM models is very rich. We analyze the experimental constraints on their parameter space, specially on the mass and mixing of the new $Z'$ boson. In addition to the exotic quarks, which can hadronize inside the detector or decay producing SM particles, the U$μν$SSM models can also have new signals such as decays of the $Z'$ to sparticle pairs like right sneutrinos, charginos or neutralinos. Besides, $Z'$ and Higgs mediated annihilations and interactions with the visible sector of WIMP dark matter particles, can also be present.

Jet tagging made easy

We develop taggers for multi-pronged jets that are simple functions of jet substructure (so-called `subjettiness') variables. These taggers can be approximately decorrelated from the jet mass in a quite simple way. Specifically, we use a Logistic Regression Design (LoRD) which, even being one of the simplest machine learning classifiers, shows a performance which surpasses that of simple variables used by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations and is not far from more complex models based on neural networks. Contrary to the latter, our method allows for an easy implementation of tagging tasks by providing a simple and interpretable analytical formula with already optimised parameters.

Multilepton dark matter signals

The signatures of dark matter at the LHC commonly involve, in simplified scenarios, the production of a single particle plus large missing energy, from the undetected dark matter. However, in $Z'$-portal scenarios anomaly cancellation requires the presence of extra dark leptons in the dark sector. We investigate the signatures of the minimal scenarios of this kind, which involve cascade decays of the extra $Z'$ boson into the dark leptons, identifying a four-lepton signal as the most promising one. We estimate the sensitivity to this signal at the LHC, the high-luminosity LHC upgrade, a possible high-energy upgrade, as well as a future circular collider. For $Z'$ couplings compatible with current dijet constraints the multilepton signals can reach the $5σ$ level already at Run 2 of the LHC. At future colliders, couplings two orders of magnitude smaller than the electroweak coupling can be probed with $5σ$ sensitivity.

Multiphoton signals of a (96 GeV?) stealth boson

Cascade decays of new scalars into final states with multiple photons and possibly quarks may lead to distinctive experimental signatures at high-energy colliders. Such signals are even more striking if the scalars are highly boosted, as when produced from the decay of a much heavier resonance. We study this type of events within the framework of the minimal stealth boson model, an anomaly-free $\text{U}(1)_{Y'}$ extension of the Standard Model with two complex scalar singlets. It is shown that, while those signals may have cross sections that might render them observable with LHC Run 2 data, they have little experimental coverage. We also establish a connection with a CMS excess observed in searches for new scalars decaying into diphoton final states near 96 GeV. In particular, we conclude that the predicted multiphoton signatures are compatible with such excess.

Exotic Vector-Like Quark Phenomenology in the Minimal Linear $σ$ Model

Extensions of the Standard Model that include vector-like quarks commonly also include additional particles that may mediate new production or decay modes. Using as example the minimal linear $σ$ model, that reduces to the minimal $SO(5)/SO(4)$ composite Higgs model in a specific limit, we consider the phenomenology of vector-like quarks when a scalar singlet $σ$ is present. This new particle may be produced in the decays $T \to t σ$, $B \to b σ$, where $T$ and $B$ are vector-like quarks of charges $2/3$ and $-1/3$, respectively, with subsequent decay $σ\to W^+ W^-, ZZ, hh$. By scanning over the allowed parameter space we find that these decays may be dominant. In addition, we find that the presence of several new particles allows for single $T$ production cross sections larger than those expected in minimal models. We discuss the observability of these new signatures in existing searches.

New physics with boosted single top production at the LHC and future colliders

We address the potential of measurements with boosted single-top final states at the high-luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) and possible future hadron colliders: the high-energy LHC (HE-LHC), and the future circular collider (FCC). As new physics examples to assess the potential, we consider the search for $tbW$ anomalous couplings and for a weakly-coupled $W'$ boson. The FCC would improve by a factor of two the sensitivity to anomalous couplings of the HL-LHC. For $W'$ bosons, the FCC is sensitive to $W'$ couplings $2-5$ times smaller than the HL-LHC in the mass range 2-4 TeV, and to masses up to 30 TeV in the case of Standard Model-like couplings.

The minimal stealth boson: models and benchmarks

Stealth bosons are relatively light boosted particles with a cascade decay $S \to A_1 A_2 \to q \bar q q \bar q$, reconstructed as a single fat jet. In this work, we establish minimal extensions of the Standard Model that allow for such processes. Namely, we consider models containing a new (leptophobic) neutral gauge boson $Z'$ and two scalar singlets, plus extra matter required to cancel the $\text{U}(1)'$ anomalies. Our analysis shows that, depending on the model and benchmark scenario, the expected statistical significance of stealth boson signals (yet uncovered by current searches at the Large Hadron Collider) is up to nine times larger than for the most sensitive of the standard leptophobic $Z'$ signals such as dijets, $t \bar t$ pairs or dibosons. These results provide strong motivation for model-independent searches that cover these complex signals.

Breaking down the entire W boson spin observables from its decay

We discuss the eight independent spin observables for the $W$ boson in terms of its vector and tensor polarizations and identify the angular distributions and asymmetries able to separate them in collider experiments. The results are applied to the study of polarized top quark decays and diboson resonances. These novel observables are of great value for disentangling new physics mechanisms in $W$ boson production.

preprint2016arXiv

Multiboson production in W' decays

In models with an extra $\text{SU}(2)_R$ gauge group and an extended scalar sector, the cascade decays of the $W'$ boson can provide various multiboson signals. In particular, diboson decays $W' \to WZ$ can be suppressed while $W' \to WZX$, with $X$ one of the scalars present in the model, can reach branching ratios around 4%. We discuss these multiboson signals focusing on possible interpretations of the ATLAS excess in fat jet pair production.

Traces of a triboson resonance

We show that the relatively small but coincident excesses observed around 2 TeV in the ATLAS Run 1 and Run 2 hadronic diboson searches --- when a cut on the number of tracks in the fat jets is not applied --- and the null results of all remaining high-mass diboson searches are compatible with the decay of a triboson resonance $R$ into $WZ$ plus an extra particle $X$. These decays can take place via new neutral ($Y^0$) or charged ($Y^\pm$) particles, namely $R \to Y^0 \, W$, with $Y^0 \to Z X$, or $R \to Y^\pm Z$, with $Y^\pm \to W X$. An obvious candidate for such intermediate particle is a neutral one $Y^0$, given a $3.9σ$ excess found at 650 GeV by the CMS Collaboration in searches for intermediate mass diboson resonances decaying to $ZV$, with $V=W,Z$. We discuss discovery strategies for triboson resonances with small modifications of existing hadronic searches.

Pinning down top dipole moments with ultra-boosted tops

We investigate existing and future hadron-collider constraints on the top dipole chromomagnetic and chromoelectric moments, two quantities that are expected to be modified in the presence of new physics. We focus first on recent measurements of the inclusive top pair production cross section at the Tevatron and at the Large Hadron Collider. We then analyse the role of top-antitop events produced at very large invariant masses, in the context of the forthcoming 13-14 TeV runs of the LHC, and at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. In this latter case, the selection of semileptonic decays to hard muons allows to tag top quarks boosted to the multi-TeV regime, strongly reducing the QCD backgrounds and leading to a significant improvement in the sensitivity to anomalous top couplings.

preprint2015arXiv

Triboson interpretations of the ATLAS diboson excess

The ATLAS excess in fat jet pair production is kinematically compatible with the decay of a heavy resonance into two gauge bosons plus an extra particle. This hypothesis would explain the absence of such a large excess in the analogous CMS analysis of fat dijet final states, as well as the negative results of diboson resonance searches in the semi-leptonic decay modes. If the extra particle is the Higgs boson, this hypothesis might also explain -statistical fluctuations aside- why the CMS search for WH resonances in the semi-leptonic channel finds some excess while in the fully hadronic one it does not have a significant deviation.

New directions for top quark polarization in the $t$-channel process

We define three orthogonal axes to investigate the top quark polarization in the $t$-channel single top process. We provide expressions for the polarization in these axes in terms of anomalous $Wtb$ couplings. It is found that the polarizations in the two axes orthogonal to the spectator quark axis are very sensitive to an anomalous coupling involving a $\bar b_L σ^{μν} t_R$ dipole term. In particular, an asymmetry based on the polarization normal to the production plane is more sensitive to the imaginary part of this coupling than previously studied observables.

Portrait of a colour octet

New colour octets stand out among the new physics proposals to explain the anomalous forward-backward asymmetry measured in $t \bar t$ production by the CDF experiment at the Tevatron. We perform a fit to $t \bar t$ observables at the Tevatron and the LHC, including total cross sections, various asymmetries and the top polarisation and spin correlations, to find the most likely parameters of a light colour octet to be consistent with data. In particular, an octet coupling only to right-handed quarks gives a good fit to all measurements. The implications from the general fit are drawn in terms of predictions for top polarisation observables whose measurements are yet not very precise, and observables which simply have not been measured.

Quantum coherence, top transverse polarisation and the Tevatron asymmetry $A_{FB}^\ell$

We revisit the relation between the asymmetries $A_{FB}$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$ in $t \bar t$ production at the Tevatron, using as new physics benchmark a colour octet. We find that $A_{FB}^\ell$ receives large contributions from the interference between $λ= \pm 1/2$ top helicity states, which has been ignored in some of the previous literature on the subject. The omission of these contributions results in a severe underestimation of the asymmetry, around $1/2$ and $1/50$ of the true value for right-handed and left-handed top couplings to the octet, respectively. Interference effects are closely related to a $\mathcal{O}(1)$ transverse top polarisation, as yet not considered in this context.

Shedding light on the $t \bar t$ asymmetry: the photon handle

We investigate a charge asymmetry in $t \bar t γ$ production at the LHC that provides complementary information to the measured asymmetries in $t \bar t$ production. We estimate the experimental uncertainty in its measurement at the LHC with 8 and 14 TeV. For new physics models that simultaneously reproduce the asymmetry excess in $t \bar t$ at the Tevatron and the SM-like asymmetry at the LHC, the measurement in $t \bar t γ$ at the LHC could exhibit significant deviations with respect to the SM prediction.

Flavoured searches for type-III seesaw at the LHC

We present a reinterpretation of CMS searches for type-III seesaw lepton triplets at the LHC, both for the normal and the inverse seesaw. We find that, in contrast with previous expectations, these searches in the trilepton final state have a good sensitivity to triplets with predominant coupling to the tau lepton. We also show that the limits resulting from direct searches can be neatly presented for arbitrary masses and general flavour mixings. Thus, it turns out that the common (and often unrealistic) simplifying assumptions about the flavour couplings of the triplets used by experimental collaborations to present their results are unnecessary and should be dropped.

Collider-independent t tbar forward-backward asymmetries

We introduce the forward-backward asymmetries A_u, A_d corresponding to u ubar, d dbar -> t tbar production, respectively, at hadron colliders. These are collider- and center-of-mass-independent observables, directly related to the forward-backward and charge asymmetries measured at the Tevatron and the LHC, respectively. We discuss how to extract these asymmetries from data. Because these asymmetries are collider-independent, their measurement at these two colliders could elucidate the nature of the anomalous forward-backward asymmetry measured at the Tevatron. Our framework also shows in a model-independent fashion that a positive Tevatron asymmetry exceeding the standard model expectation is compatible with the small asymmetry measured at the LHC.

preprint2012arXiv

Four tops and the t tbar forward-backward asymmetry

New colour octet vectors below the TeV scale could explain the anomalous t tbar forward-backward asymmetry observed at the Tevatron experiments, while being consistent with the current LHC data. These models generally lead to four-top final states at the LHC at observable levels. We compute the four-top production cross section at the LHC in a model with a massive colour octet vector as a function its mass, its width and its coupling to the top quark. Octet masses in the vicinity of the t tbar threshold are generally excluded by present limits on the production of same-sign dileptons and trileptons. Masses above 650 GeV are allowed, quite independently of the couplings, but they can be probed with the luminosity of 5 fb^-1 already collected at the LHC, up to around 800 GeV. The four-top production cross section is increased by a factor ~ 2 with sqrt{s}=8 TeV and by up to almost two orders of magnitude with sqrt{s}=14 TeV, thus greatly increasing the reach for massive gluons after the LHC energy upgrade.

Measuring heavy neutrino couplings at the LHC

The existence of heavy neutrinos mediating neutrino masses via a type-I seesaw can be directly probed at the LHC, or indirectly in rare lepton flavor-violating processes. The synergy between these two approaches requires a direct measurement of the heavy neutrino couplings. We discuss a strategy to perform such measurements at the LHC in the context of left-right symmetric models, which is also applicable to other models implementing a type-I or type-III seesaw. We demonstrate that the ambiguities in the determination of the heavy neutrino mixing parameters can be resolved by performing an exclusive analysis of dilepton final states, discriminated by flavor and missing energy.

preprint2012arXiv

Model-independent measurement of the top quark polarisation

We introduce a new asymmetry in the decay t -> W b -> l nu b, which is shown to be directly proportional to the polarisation of the top quark along a chosen axis, times a sum of W helicity fractions. The latter have already been precisely measured at the Tevatron and the Large Hadron Collider. Therefore, this new asymmetry can be used to obtain a model-independent measurement of the polarisation of top quarks produced in any process at hadron or lepton colliders.

Asymmetries in t tbar production: LHC versus Tevatron

The measurement of a charge asymmetry in t tbar production at LHC constitutes more than an independent confirmation of the forward-backward asymmetry found at Tevatron. Indeed, both measurements together can be used to identify the source of the asymmetry. This is demonstrated for the case of new Z', W' vector bosons and colour-sextet and triplet scalars, exchanged in t, u channels respectively, and a very heavy axigluon in the s channel.

Constraints on the Wtb vertex from early LHC data

We use the recent measurements of top quark decay asymmetries in ATLAS and the t-channel single top cross section in CMS to set the first combined LHC limits on the Wtb vertex. This combination allows to obtain much better limits than the separate measurements. The resulting constraints are comparable, although still weaker, than the ones obtained using Tevatron data with much more statistics.

Effective four-fermion operators in top physics: a roadmap

We write down a minimal basis for dimension-six gauge-invariant four-fermion operators, with some operator replacements with respect to previous ones which make it simpler for calculations. Using this basis we classify all four-fermion operator contributions involving one or two top quarks. Taking into account the different fermion chiralities, possible colour contractions and independent flavour combinations, a total number of 572 gauge-invariant operators are involved. We apply this to calculate all three-body top decay widths t -> d_k u_i dbar_j, t -> d_k e_i+ nu_j, t -> u_k u_i ubar_j, t -> u_k e_j+ e_i-, t -> u_k nu_j nu_i (with i,j,k generation indices) mediated by dimension-six four-fermion operators, including the interference with the Standard Model amplitudes when present. All single top production cross sections in pp, p pbar and e+ e- collisions are calculated as well, namely u_i d_k -> d_j t, dbar_j d_k -> ubar_i t, u_i dbar_j -> dbar_k t, u_i u_k -> u_j t, u_i ubar_j -> ubar_k t, e+ e- -> ubar_k t and the charge conjugate processes. We also compute all top pair production cross sections, ubar_i u_j -> t tbar, dbar_i d_j -> t tbar, u_i u_j -> t t and e+ e- -> t tbar. Our results are completely general, without assuming any particular relation among effective operator coefficients.

No like-sign tops at Tevatron: Constraints on extended models and implications for the t tbar asymmetry

We use a recent upper limit from CDF on like-sign top pair production to place constraints on general new vector bosons and scalars mediating u u -> t t. The possible vector bosons comprise neutral colour singlets or octets, and charge 4/3 colour triplets or sextets, whereas the new scalars can be neutral colour singlets or octets and charge 4/3 colour sextets. We also estimate the expected bounds from like-sign top pair production at LHC in the near future. Then, we address the implications of these limits for the forward-backward asymmetry in t tbar production measured at Tevatron. In particular, we find that models explaining the observed asymmetry by the exchange of a single t-channel heavy Z' boson are already excluded. On the other hand, light Z' bosons with a mass M_Z' ~ 150 GeV, which could also account for a recent CDF dijet excess in W+jet production, are barely allowed.

Probing the Tevatron t tbar asymmetry at LHC

We use an effective operator framework to study the contributions to the Tevatron t tbar asymmetry from arbitrary vector bosons and scalars, and compare with their effect on the t tbar tail at LHC. Our study shows, for example, that models reproducing the t tbar asymmetry by exchange of Z' and W' bosons or colour-triplet scalars lead to a large enhancement in the t tbar tail at LHC. This fact can be used to exclude these models as the sole explanation for the asymmetry, using the data already collected by CMS and ATLAS. Our analysis is model independent in the sense that we scan over all possible extra particles contributing to the asymmetry, and allow for general couplings. We also explore a class of Standard Model extensions which can accommodate the Tevatron asymmetry without contributing to the total t tbar cross section at first order, so that the enhancement of the tail at Tevatron and LHC is moderate.

Simple models for the top asymmetry: constraints and predictions

We perform a comprehensive study of the allowed range for the Tevatron t tbar forward-backward asymmetries in six representative new physics models: a flavour-changing Z' boson, a scalar isodoublet, a W' boson, a heavy axigluon, a colour-triplet and a colour-sextet scalar. We devote special attention to the constraints from the t tbar tail at LHC on the parameter space, which will be dramatic if the measurements agree with the SM prediction, specially for Z' and W' bosons. We also study the predictions for the charge asymmetries at LHC and compare several proposed definitions.

Using single top rapidity to measure V_td, V_ts, V_tb at hadron colliders

Single top production processes are usually regarded as the ones in which V_tb can be directly measured at hadron colliders. We show that the analysis of the single top rapidity distribution in t-channel and tW production can also set direct limits on V_td. At LHC with 10 fb^-1 at 14 TeV the combined limits on V_td may be reduced by almost a factor of two when the top rapidity distribution is used. This also implies that the limits on V_tb can also be reduced by 15%, since both parameters as well as V_ts must be simultaneously obtained from a global fit to data. At Tevatron the explotation of this distribution would require very high statistics.

Effective operators in top physics

Top interactions beyond the Standard Model can be conveniently described in the framework of gauge-invariant effective operators. We briefly review the general form of the fermion-fermion-gauge boson and fermion-fermion-Higgs interactions arising from dimension-6 operators, focusing on the top quark. We discuss in detail an expansion in powers of 1/Lambda^2, where Lambda is the new physics scale, to consistently calculate observables in terms of top anomalous couplings.

The Hunt for New Physics at the Large Hadron Collider

The Large Hadron Collider presents an unprecedented opportunity to probe the realm of new physics in the TeV region and shed light on some of the core unresolved issues of particle physics. These include the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin of mass, the possible constituent of cold dark matter, new sources of CP violation needed to explain the baryon excess in the universe, the possible existence of extra gauge groups and extra matter, and importantly the path Nature chooses to resolve the hierarchy problem - is it supersymmetry or extra dimensions. Many models of new physics beyond the standard model contain a hidden sector which can be probed at the LHC. Additionally, the LHC will be a top factory and accurate measurements of the properties of the top and its rare decays will provide a window to new physics. Further, the LHC could shed light on the origin of neutralino masses if the new physics associated with their generation lies in the TeV region. Finally, the LHC is also a laboratory to test the hypothesis of TeV scale strings and D-brane models. An overview of these possibilities is presented in the spirit that it will serve as a companion to the Technical Design Reports (TDRs) by the particle detector groups ATLAS and CMS to facilitate the test of the new theoretical ideas at the LHC. Which of these ideas stands the test of the LHC data will govern the course of particle physics in the subsequent decades.

W polarisation beyond helicity fractions in top quark decays

We calculate the density matrix for the decay of a polarised top quark into a polarised W boson and a massive b quark, for the most general Wtb vertex arising from dimension-six gauge-invariant effective operators. We show that, in addition to the well-known W helicity fractions, for polarised top decays it is worth to define and study the transverse and normal W polarisation fractions, that is, the W polarisation along two directions orthogonal to its momentum. In particular, a rather simple forward-backward asymmetry in the normal direction is found to be very sensitive to complex phases in one of the Wtb anomalous couplings. This asymmetry, which indicates a normal W polarisation, can be generated for example by a P-odd, T-odd transition electric dipole moment. We also investigate the angular distribution of decay products in the top quark rest frame, calculating the spin analysing powers for a general Wtb vertex. Finally we show that, using a combined fit to top decay observables and the tW cross section, at LHC it will be possible to obtain model-independent measurements of all the (complex) Wtb couplings as well as the single top polarisation. Implications for spin correlations in top pair production are also discussed.

Zt, gamma t and t production at hadron colliders via strong flavour-changing neutral couplings

We consider gq -> Zt, gq -> gamma t and gq -> t production (q=u,c) mediated by strong flavour-changing neutral interactions within an effective operator framework. We provide total cross sections for Tevatron and LHC, showing explicitly that the six processes can be described in full generality in terms of only two parameters (anomalous couplings) for q=u plus two for q=c. In our work we take into account and study in detail the effects of top quark decay. For gamma t, the inclusion of the top quark decay in the matrix element reveals an striking result: the largest contribution to the final state, e.g. gamma l nu b, with l = e, mu, tau, does not result from gq -> gamma t -> gamma l nu b but from on-shell gq -> t production with t -> gamma l nu b, being the photon radiated off the top decay products. This contribution, missed in previous literature, increases the signal cross sections by factors ranging between 3 and 6.5.

Combined analysis of Z' -> t tbar and Z' -> t tbar j production for vector resonance searches at LHC

We have implemented a code for Z' + n jets production in ALPGEN, with Z' decays into several final states, including l+ l- and t tbar. The MLM prescription is used for matching the matrix element with the parton shower, including in this way the leading soft and collinear corrections. In order to demonstrate its capabilities, we perform a combined analysis of Z' -> t tbar and Z' -> t tbar j production for a heavy leptophobic gauge boson. It is found that the effect of the extra jet cannot only be accounted for by a K factor multiplying the leading-order cross section. In fact, the combined analysis for Z' -> t tbar and Z' -> t tbar j presented improves the statistical significance of the signal by 25% (8.55 sigma versus 6.77 sigma for a Z' mass of 1 TeV), compared with the results of an inclusive analysis carried out on the same sample of t tbar + t tbar j events.

Identifying top partners at LHC

We systematically study the possible signals at LHC of new vector-like quarks mainly coupled to the third generation. We consider heavy quarks T, B, X, Y of charges 2/3, -1/3, 5/3 and -4/3, respectively, in SU(2)_L isosinglets T_{L,R}, B_{L,R}, or isodoublets (T B)_{L,R}, (X T)_{L,R} or (B Y)_{L,R}. Analyses based on a fast detector simulation are presented for twelve different final states containing one, two, three or four charged leptons in several invariant mass regions, also considering various b quark multiplicities. It is shown that with the combination of the different channels the new quarks can be identified and their charged and neutral decays established. The comparison among final states also shows that the single lepton one offers the best discovery potential at LHC. For heavy quark masses of 500 GeV, the 5 sigma discovery luminosities range from 0.16 fb^-1 for a (X T)_{L,R} doublet to 1.9 fb^-1 for a B_{L,R} singlet.

Trilepton signals: the golden channel for seesaw searches at LHC

The comparison of samples with different number of charged leptons shows that trilepton signals are the most significant ones for seesaw mediators. As previously pointed out, this is indeed the case for scalar (type II) and fermion (type III) triplets at LHC, which can be discovered in this channel for masses up to 500-700 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 30 fb^-1; whereas fermion singlets (type I) are marginally observable if there are no further new physics near the TeV scale. However, if there are new gauge interactions at this scale coupling to right-handed neutrinos, as in left-right models, heavy neutrinos are observable up to masses ~ 2 TeV for new gauge boson masses up to ~ 4 TeV, as we discuss in some detail.

A minimal set of top anomalous couplings

We simplify the general form of the fermion-fermion-gauge boson interactions generated by dimension-six gauge-invariant effective operators by using the equations of motion to remove redundant operators. It is found that the most general vertex for off-shell fermions fi, fj and an off-shell boson V=W,Z,gamma,g only involves gamma^mu and sigma^{mu nu} q_nu terms, with q=p_i-p_j. Examples are given for the Wtb, Ztt, gamma tt and gtt interactions, whose general expression is greatly simplified with respect to previous results in the literature. The same arguments apply to top flavour-changing neutral interactions with the Z boson, the photon or the gluon, which can also be parameterised in full generality with only gamma^mu and sigma^{mu nu} q_nu couplings. Explicit expressions are given for these vertices in terms of dimension-six gauge-invariant operators. We also discuss how effective operator coefficients might be determined from eventual measurements of anomalous couplings.

Flavour and polarisation in heavy neutrino production at e+ e- colliders

We analyse l W nu production at ILC, paying special attention to the role of the final lepton flavour and beam polarisation in the search for a new heavy neutrino N. We show that a sizeable coupling to the electron V_eN ~ 10^-2 is necessary to have an observable signal in any of the channels, despite the fact that the signal may be more visible in muon or tau final states. The non-observation of a heavy neutrino at ILC will improve the present upper bound on its mixing with the electron by more than one order of magnitude, V_eN < 0.007 for m_N between 200 and 400 GeV.

l W nu production at CLIC: a window to TeV scale non-decoupled neutrinos

We discuss single heavy neutrino production e+ e- -> N nu -> l W nu, l = e, mu, tau, at a future high energy collider like CLIC, with a centre of mass energy of 3 TeV. This process could allow to detect heavy neutrinos with masses of 1-2 TeV if their coupling to the electron V_eN is in the range 0.004-0.01. We study the dependence of the limits on the heavy neutrino mass and emphasise the crucial role of lepton flavour in the discovery of a positive signal at CLIC energy. We present strategies to determine heavy neutrino properties once they are discovered, namely their Dirac or Majorana character and the size and chirality of their charged current couplings. Conversely, if no signal is found, the bound V_eN < 0.002-0.006 would be set for masses of 1-2 TeV, improving the present limit up to a factor of 30. We also extend previous work examining in detail the flavour and mass dependence of the corresponding limits at ILC, as well as the determination of heavy neutrino properties if they are discovered at this collider.

Pair production of heavy Q=2/3 singlets at LHC

We examine the LHC discovery potential for new Q=2/3 quark singlets T in the process gg,qq -> T Tbar -> W+ b W- bbar, with one W boson decaying hadronically and the other one leptonically. A particle-level simulation of this signal and its main backgrounds is performed, showing that heavy quarks with masses of 500 GeV or lighter can be discovered at the 5 sigma level after a few months of running, when an integrated luminosity of 3 fb^-1 is collected. With a luminosity of 100 fb^-1, this process can signal the presence of heavy quarks with masses up to approximately 1 TeV. Finally, we discuss the complementarity among T Tbar, Tj production and indirect constraints from precise electroweak data in order to discover a new quark or set bounds on its mass.

Sneutrino cascade decays ~nu_e -> e- ~X_1^+ -> e- f f' ~X_1^0 as a probe of chargino spin properties and CP violation

The decays ~nu_e -> e- ~X_1^+, ~nu_e* -> e+ ~X_1^-, when kinematically allowed, constitute a source of 100% polarised charginos. We study the process e+ e- -> ~nu_e* ~nu_e -> e+ ~X_1^- e- ~X_1^+, with subsequent chargino decays X_1^- -> nu_mu mu- ~X_1^0, X_1^+ -> q qbar' ~X_1^0 or their charge conjugate X_1^- -> qbar q' ~X_1^0, ~X_1^+ -> nu_mu mu+ ~X_1^0. The kinematics of this process allows the reconstruction of the sneutrino and chargino rest frames, and thus a clean analysis of the angular distributions of the visible final state products in these reference systems. Furthermore, a triple product CP asymmetry can be built in ~X_1^+- hadronic decays, involving the chargino spins and the momenta of the quark and antiquark. With a good c tagging efficiency, this CP asymmetry is quite sensitive to the phase of the bino mass term M_1 and can test CP violation in the neutralino sector.

Top flavour-changing neutral interactions: theoretical expectations and experimental detection

Top flavour-changing neutral interactions with a light quark q=u,c and a gauge or Higgs boson are very suppressed within the Standard Model (SM), but can reach observable levels in many of its extensions. We review the possible size of the effective vertices Ztq, gamma tq, gtq and Htq in several SM extensions, and discuss the processes in which these interactions might show up at LHC and at a high energy e+ e- linear collider.

Effects of mixing with quark singlets

The mixing of the known quarks with new heavy singlets can modify significantly some observables with respect to the Standard Model predictions. We analyse the range of deviations permitted by the constraints from precision electroweak data and flavour-changing neutral processes at low energies. We study top charged current and neutral current couplings, which will be directly tested at top factories, like LHC and TESLA. We discuss some examples of observables from K and B physics, as the branching ratio of K_L -> pi^0 nu nu, the B^0_s mass difference or the time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0 -> D_s^+ D_s^-, which can also show large new effects.

The size of chi = arg (-Vts Vtb* Vcs* Vcb) and physics beyond the Standard Model

We analyse the allowed range of values of chi, both in the Standard Model and in models with New Physics, pointing out that a relatively large value of chi, e.g. of order lambda, is only possible in models where the unitarity of the 3x3 Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is violated through the introduction of extra Q=2/3 quarks. We study the interesting case where the extra quark is an isosinglet, determining the allowed range for chi and the effect of a large chi on various low-energy observables, such as CP asymmetries in B meson decays. We also discuss the correlated effects which would be observable at high energy colliders, like decays t -> cZ, modifications of the cross section and forward-backward asymmetry in e+ e- -> ttbar and the direct production of a new quark.

Testing the Majorana nature of neutralinos in supersymmetric theories

We discuss selectron pair production in e- e- scattering. These processes can only occur via t-channel neutralino exchange, provided that the neutralinos are Majorana fermions. We concentrate on the processes e- e- -> e^~_L e^~_L,e^~_R e^~_R -> e- X^~_1^0 e- X^~_2^0 -> e- X^~_1^0 e- X^~_1^0 f f, in which a complete determination of the final state momenta is possible without using the selectron masses as input. The experimental reconstruction of the selectron masses in this decay channel provides clear evidence of the Majorana character of the neutralinos, which is confirmed by the analysis of the electron energy spectrum.

Rare top decays t -> c gamma, t -> c g and CKM unitarity

Top flavour-changing neutral decays are extremely suppressed within the Standard Model (SM) by the GIM mechanism, but can reach observable rates in some of its extensions. We compute the branching ratios for t -> c gamma and t -> c g in minimal SM extensions where the addition of a vector-like up or down quark singlet breaks the unitarity of the 3 x 3 Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix. The maximum rates obtained indicate to what extent present experimental data allow 3 x 3 CKM unitarity to be broken in these models, and are too small to be observed in the near future. As a by-product, we reproduce the calculation of these branching ratios in the SM, and with an improved set of parameters we obtain values one order of magnitude smaller than the ones usually quoted in the literature. We study the CP asymmetries between the decay rates of the top quark and antiquark, which can be much larger than in the SM, also as a consequence of the partial breaking of 3 x 3 CKM unitarity.

Top flavour-changing neutral coupling signals at a linear collider

We present an analysis of the sensitivity of the TESLA e+ e- collider to top flavour-changing neutral couplings to the Z boson and photon. We consider the cases without beam polarization, with only e- polarization and with e- and e+ polarization, showing that the use of the latter substantially enhances the sensitivity to discover or bound these vertices. For some of the couplings the expected LHC limits could be improved up to an order of magnitude for equal running times.

CP violation from new quarks in the chiral limit

We characterize CP violation in the SU(2)xU(1) model due to an extra vector-like quark or sequential family, giving special emphasis to the chiral limit m_{u,d,s}=0. In this limit, CP is conserved in the three generation Standard Model (SM), thus implying that all CP violation is due to the two new CP violating phases whose effects may manifest either at high energy in processes involving the new quark or as deviations from SM unitarity equalities among imaginary parts of invariant quartets (or, equivalently, areas of unitarity triangles). In our analysis we use an invariant formulation, independent of the choice of weak quark basis or the phase convention in the generalized Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. We identify the three weak-basis invariants, as well as the three imaginary parts of quartets B_{1-3} which, in the chiral limit, give the strength of CP violation beyond the SM. We find that for an extra vector-like quark |B_i| <= 10^{-4}, whereas for an extra sequential family |B_i| <= 10^{-2}.
