Heat Semigroups on Weyl Algebra

We study the algebra of semigroups of Laplacians on the Weyl algebra. We consider first-order partial differential operators $\nabla^\pm_i$ forming the Lie algebra $[\nabla^\pm_j,\nabla^\pm_k]= i\mathcal{R}^\pm_{jk}$ and $[\nabla^+_j,\nabla^-_k] =i\frac{1}{2}(\mathcal{R}^+_{jk}+\mathcal{R}^-_{jk})$ with some anti-symmetric matrices $\mathcal{R}^\pm_{ij}$ and define the corresponding Laplacians $Δ_\pm=g_\pm^{ij}\nabla^\pm_i\nabla^\pm_j$ with some positive matrices $g_\pm^{ij}$. We show that the heat semigroups $\exp(tΔ_\pm)$ can be represented as a Gaussian average of the operators $\exp\left<ξ,\nabla^\pm\right>$ and use these representations to compute the product of the semigroups, $\exp(tΔ_+)\exp(sΔ_-)$ and the corresponding heat kernel.

Thermal Yang-Mills Theory In the Einstein Universe

We study the stability of a non-Abelian chromomagnetic vacuum in Yang-Mills theory in Euclidean Einstein universe $S^1\times S^3$. We assume that the gauge group is a simple compact group $G$ containing the group SU(2) as a subgroup and consider static covariantly constant gauge fields on $S^3$ taking values in the adjoint representation of the group $G$ and forming a representation of the group $SU(2)$. We compute the heat kernel for the Laplacian acting on fields on $S^3$ in an arbitrary representation of SU(2) and use this result to compute the heat kernels for the gluon and the ghost operators and the one-loop effective action. We show that the only configuration of the covariantly constant Yang-Mills background that is stable is the one that contains only spinor (fundamental) representations of the group SU(2); all other configurations contain negative modes and are unstable. For the stable configuration we compute the asymptotics of the effective action, the energy density, the entropy and the heat capacity in the limits of low/high temperature and small/large volume and show that the energy density has a non-trivial minimum at a finite value of the radius of the sphere $S^3$.

Effective Action and Phase Transitions in Thermal Yang-Mills Theory on Spheres

We study the covariantly constant Savvidy-type chromomagnetic vacuum in finite-temperature Yang-Mills theory on the four-dimensional curved spacetime. Motivated by the fact that a positive spatial curvature acts as an effective gluon mass we consider the compact Euclidean spacetime $S^1\times S^1\times S^2$, with the radius of the first circle determined by the temperature $a_1=(2πT)^{-1}$. We show that covariantly constant Yang-Mills fields on $S^2$ cannot be arbitrary but are rather a collection of monopole-antimonopole pairs. We compute the heat kernels of all relevant operators exactly and show that the gluon operator on such a background has negative modes for any compact semi-simple gauge group. We compute the infrared regularized effective action and apply the result for the computation of the entropy and the heat capacity of the quark-gluon gas. We compute the heat capacity for the gauge group SU(2N) for a field configuration of $N$ monopole-antimonopole pairs. We show that in the high-temperature limit the heat capacity is well defined in the infrared limit and exhibits a typical behavior of second-order phase transition $\sim (T-T_c)^{-3/2}$ with the critical temperature $T_c=(2πa)^{-1}$, where $a$ is the radius of the 2-sphere $S^2$.

Non-perturbative Effective Action in Gauge Theories and Quantum Gravity

We use our recently developed algebraic methods for the calculation of the heat kernel on homogeneous bundles over symmetric spaces to evaluate the non-perturbative low-energy effective action in quantum general relativity and Yang-Mills gauge theory in curved space. We obtain an exact integral repesentation for the effective action that generates all terms in the standard asymptotic epxansion of the effective action without derivatives of the curvatures effectively summing up the whole infinite subseries of all quantum corrections with low momenta.

Kinematics in Matrix Gravity

We develop the kinematics in Matrix Gravity, which is a modified theory of gravity obtained by a non-commutative deformation of General Relativity. In this model the usual interpretation of gravity as Riemannian geometry is replaced by a new kind of geometry, which is equivalent to a collection of Finsler geometries with several Finsler metrics depending both on the position and on the velocity. As a result the Riemannian geodesic flow is replaced by a collection of Finsler flows. This naturally leads to a model in which a particle is described by several mass parameters. If these mass parameters are different then the equivalence principle is violated. In the non-relativistic limit this also leads to corrections to the Newton's gravitational potential. We find the first and second order corrections to the usual Riemannian geodesic flow and evaluate the anomalous nongeodesic acceleration in a particular case of static spherically symmetric background.

Mathematical Tools for Calculation of the Effective Action in Quantum Gravity

We review the status of covariant methods in quantum field theory and quantum gravity, in particular, some recent progress in the calculation of the effective action via the heat kernel method. We study the heat kernel associated with an elliptic second-order partial differential operator of Laplace type acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle over a Riemannian manifold without boundary. We develop a manifestly covariant method for computation of the heat kernel asymptotic expansion as well as new algebraic methods for calculation of the heat kernel for covariantly constant background, in particular, on homogeneous bundles over symmetric spaces, which enables one to compute the low-energy non-perturbative effective action.

Heat Kernel Asymptotics on Homogeneous Bundles

We consider Laplacians acting on sections of homogeneous vector bundles over symmetric spaces. By using an integral representation of the heat semi-group we find a formal solution for the heat kernel diagonal that gives a generating function for the whole sequence of heat invariants. We argue that the obtained formal solution correctly reproduces the exact heat kernel diagonal after a suitable regularization and analytical continuation.

Heat Kernel on Homogeneous Bundles over Symmetric Spaces

We consider Laplacians acting on sections of homogeneous vector bundles over symmetric spaces. By using an integral representation of the heat semi-group we find a formal solution for the heat kernel diagonal that gives a generating function for the whole sequence of heat invariants. We show explicitly that the obtained result correctly reproduces the first non-trivial heat kernel coefficient as well as the exact heat kernel diagonals on two-dimensional sphere $S^2$ and the hyperbolic plane $H^2$. We argue that the obtained formal solution correctly reproduces the exact heat kernel diagonal after a suitable regularization and analytical continuation.

Matrix General Relativity: A New Look at Old Problems

We develop a novel approach to gravity that we call `matrix general relativity' (MGR) or `gravitational chromodynamics' (GCD or GQCD for quantum version). Gravity is described in this approach not by one Riemannian metric (i.e. a symmetric two-tensor field) but by a multiplet of such fields, or by a matrix-valued symmetric two-tensor field that satisfies certain conditions. We define the matrix extensions of standard constructions of differential geometry including connections and curvatures, and finally, an invariant functional of the new field that reduces to the standard Einstein action functional in the commutative (diagonal) case. Our main idea is the analogy with Yang-Mills theory (QCD and Standard Model). We call the new degrees of freedom of gravity associated with the matrix structure `gravitational color' or simply `gravicolor' and introduce a new gauge symmetry associated with this degree of freedom. As in the Standard Model there are two possibilities. First of all, it is possible that at high energies (say at Planckian scale) this symmetry is exact (symmetric phase), but at low energies it is badly broken, so that one tensor field remains massless (and gives general relativity) and the other ones become massive with the masses of Planckian scale. Second possibilty is that the additional degrees of freedom of gravitational field are confined within the Planckian scale. What one sees at large distances are singlets (invariants) of the new gauge symmetry.

Heat Kernel Asymptotics of Operators with Non-Laplace Principal Part

We consider second-order elliptic partial differential operators acting on sections of vector bundles over a compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, working without the assumption of Laplace-like principal part $-\N^μ\N_μ$. Our objective is to obtain information on the asymptotic expansions of the corresponding resolvent and the heat kernel. The heat kernel and the Green's function are constructed explicitly in the leading order. The first two coefficients of the heat kernel asymptotic expansion are computed explicitly. A new semi-classical ansatz as well as the complete recursion system for the heat kernel of non-Laplace type operators is constructed. Some particular cases are studied in more detail.

Heat Kernel Asymptotics of the Gilkey-Smith Boundary Value Problem

The formulation of gauge theories on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary leads to partial differential operators with Gilkey--Smith boundary conditions, whose peculiar property is the occurrence of both normal and tangential derivatives on the boundary. Unlike the standard Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions, this boundary-value problem is not automatically elliptic but becomes elliptic under certain conditions on the boundary operator. We study the Gilkey--Smith boundary-value problem for Laplace-type operators and find a simple criterion of ellipticity. The first non-trivial coefficient of the asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel is computed and the local leading asymptotics of the heat-kernel diagonal is also obtained. It is shown that, in the non-elliptic case, the heat-kernel diagonal is non-integrable near the boundary, which reflects the fact that the heat kernel is not of trace class. We apply this analysis to general linear bosonic gauge theories and find an explicit condition of ellipticity.

On Ellipticity and Gauge Invariance in Euclidean Quantum Gravity

Invariance principles determine many key properties in quantum field theory, including, in particular, the appropriate form of the boundary conditions. A crucial consistency check is the proof that the resulting boundary-value problem is strongly elliptic. In Euclidean quantum gravity, the appropriate principle seems to be the invariance of boundary conditions under infinitesimal diffeomorphisms on metric perturbations, and hence their BRST invariance. However, if the operator on metric perturbations is then chosen to be of Laplace type, the boundary-value problem for the quantized gravitational field fails to be strongly elliptic. A detailed proof is presented, and the corresponding open problems are discussed.

Covariant techniques for computation of the heat kernel

The heat kernel associated with an elliptic second-order partial differential operator of Laplace type acting on smooth sections of a vector bundle over a Riemannian manifold, is studied. A general manifestly covariant method for computation of the coefficients of the heat kernel asymptotic expansion is developed. The technique enables one to compute explicitly the diagonal values of the heat kernel coefficients, so called Hadamard-Minackshisundaram-De Witt-Seeley coefficients, as well as their derivatives. The elaborated technique is applicable for a manifold of arbitrary dimension and for a generic Riemannian metric of arbitrary signature. It is very algorithmic, and well suited to automated computation. The fourth heat kernel coefficient is computed explicitly for the first time. The general structure of the heat kernel coefficients is investigated in detail. On the one hand, the leading derivative terms in all heat kernel coefficients are computed. On the other hand, the generating functions in closed covariant form for the covariantly constant terms and some low-derivative terms in the heat kernel coefficients are constructed by means of purely algebraic methods. This gives, in particular, the whole sequence of heat kernel coefficients for an arbitrary locally symmetric space.

A model of stable chromomagnetic vacuum in higher-dimensional Yang-Mills theory

We study the effective action in Euclidean Yang-Mills theory with a compact simple gauge group in one-loop approximation assuming a covariantly constant gauge field strength as a background. For groups of higher rank and spacetimes of higher dimensions such field configurations have many independent color components taking values in Cartan subalgebra and many ``magnetic fields'' in each color component. In our previous investigation it was shown that such background is stable in dimensions higher than four provided the amplitudes of ``magnetic fields'' do not differ much from each other. In present paper we calculate exactly the relevant zeta-functions in the case of equal amplitudes of ``magnetic fields''. For the case of two ``magnetic fields'' with equal amplitudes the behavior of the effective action is studied in detail. It is shown that in dimensions $d=4,5,6,7$ $({\rm mod}\, 8)$, the perturbative vacuum is metastable, i.e., it is stable in perturbation theory but the effective action is not bounded from below, whereas in dimensions $d=9,10,11$ $({\rm mod}\, 8)$ the perturbative vacuum is absolutely stable. In dimensions $d=8$ $({\rm mod}\, 8)$ the perturbative vacuum is stable for small values of coupling constant but becomes unstable for large coupling constant leading to the formation of a non-perturbative stable vacuum with nonvanishing ``magnetic fields''. The critical value of the coupling constant and the amplitudes of the vacuum ``magnetic fields'' are evaluated exactly.
