Determining the output port from the distance

In this paper we discuss the following scenario. Suppose that two distant observers share an entangled state of two $D$-level systems. The two observers, Alice and Bob, have to send randomly their particles through a multi-input multi-output device. The task is to determine the nature of this device or black-box, such that Alice will be able to determine with certainty the output port of Bob's particle. We prove that this black-box is the multi-input-port quantum sorter. Further, we investigate if it is possible to determine the output port in the case when three observers are involved by analyzing the cases when the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and the W state are used.

Dynamics of quantum discord of two coupled spin-1/2 subjected to time-dependent magnetic fields

We describe the dynamics of quantum discord of two interacting spin-1/2 subjected to controllable time-dependent magnetic fields. The exact time evolution of discord is given for various input mixed states consisting of classical mixtures of two Bell states. The quantum discord manifests a complex oscillatory behaviour in time and is compared with that of quantum entanglement, measured by concurrence. The interplay of the action of the time-dependent magnetic fields and the spin-coupling mechanism in the occurrence and evolution of quantum correlations is examined in detail.

Decay of Gaussian correlations in local thermal reservoirs

In this paper we examine the decay of quantum correlations for the radiation field in a two-mode squeezed thermal state in contact with local thermal reservoirs. Two measures of the evolving quantum correlations are compared: the entanglement of formation and the quantum discord. We derive analytic expressions of the entanglement-death time in two special cases: when the reservoirs for each mode are identical, as well as when a single reservoir acts on the first mode only. In the latter configuration, we show that all the pure Gaussian states lose their entanglement at the same time determined solely by the field-reservoir coupling. Also investigated is the evolution of the Gaussian quantum discord for the same choices of thermal baths. We notice that the discord can increase in time above its initial value in a special situation, namely, when it is defined by local measurements on the attenuated mode and the input state is mixed. This enhancement of discord is stronger for zero-temperature reservoirs and increases with the input degree of mixing.

Quantum Chernoff bound as a measure of efficiency of quantum cloning for mixed states

In this paper we investigate the efficiency of quantum cloning of $N$ identical mixed qubits. We employ a recently introduced measure of distinguishability of quantum states called quantum Chernoff bound. We evaluate the quantum Chernoff bound between the output clones generated by the cloning machine and the initial mixed qubit state. Our analysis is illustrated by performing numerical calculation of the quantum Chernoff bound for different scenarios that involves the number of initial qubits $N$ and the number of output imperfect copies $M$.

The correspondence between mutually unbiased bases and mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares

We study the connection between mutually unbiased bases and mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares, a wider class of squares which does not contain only the Latin squares. We show that there are four types of complete sets of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares for the dimension $d=8$. We introduce the concept of physical striation and show that this is equivalent to the extraordinary supersquare. The general algorithm for obtaining the mutually unbiased bases and the physical striations is constructed and it is shown that the complete set of mutually unbiased physical striations is equivalent to the complete set of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares. We apply the algorithm to two examples: one for two-qubit systems ($d=4$) and one for three-qubit systems ($d=8$), by using the Type II complete sets of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares of order 8.

A new method of construction of all sets of mutually unbiased bases for two-qubit systems

Mutually unbiased bases are an important tool in many applications of quantum information theory. We present a new algorithm for finding the mutually unbiased bases for two-qubit systems. We derive a system of four equations in the Galois field GF(4) and show that the solutions of this system are sufficient for obtaining the most general set of mutually unbiased bases. Further, our algorithm is applied to an example and we show that there are three possible solutions of the system of four equations, each solution leading to a different set of mutually unbiased bases.

Construction of the mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares

Our purpose is to determine the complete set of mutually orthogonal squares of order $d$, which are not necessary Latin. In this article, we introduce the concept of supersquare of order $d$, which is defined with the help of its generating subgroup in $\mathbb{F}_d\times \mathbb{F}_d$. We present a method of construction of the mutually orthogonal supersquares. Further, we investigate the orthogonality of extraordinary supersquares, a special family of squares, whose generating subgroups are extraordinary. The extraordinary subgroups in $\mathbb{F}_d\times \mathbb{F}_d$ are of great importance in the field of quantum information processing, especially for the study of mutually unbiased bases. We determine the most general complete sets of mutually orthogonal extraordinary supersquares of order 4, which consist in the so-called Type I and Type II. The well-known case of $d-1$ mutually orthogonal Latin squares is only a special case, namely Type I.

Gaussification through decoherence

We investigate the loss of nonclassicality and non-Gaussianity of a single-mode state of the radiation field in contact with a thermal reservoir. The damped density matrix for a Fock-diagonal input is written using the Weyl expansion of the density operator. Analysis of the evolution of the quasiprobability densities reveals the existence of two successive characteristic times of the reservoir which are sufficient to assure the positivity of the Wigner function and, respectively, of the $P$ representation. We examine the time evolution of non-Gaussianity using three recently introduced distance-type measures. They are based on the Hilbert-Schmidt metric, the relative entropy, and the Bures metric. Specifically, for an $M$-photon-added thermal state, we obtain a compact analytic formula of the time-dependent density matrix that is used to evaluate and compare the three non-Gaussianity measures. We find a good consistency of these measures on the sets of damped states. The explicit damped quasiprobability densities are shown to support our general findings regarding the loss of negativities of Wigner and $P$ functions during decoherence. Finally, we point out that Gaussification of the attenuated field mode is accompanied by a nonmonotonic evolution of the von Neumann entropy of its state conditioned by the initial value of the mean photon number.

Generation of all sets of mutually unbiased bases for three-qubit systems

We propose a new method of finding the mutually unbiased bases for three qubits. The key element is the construction of the table of striation-generating curves in the discrete phase space. We derive a system of equations in the Galois field GF(8) and show that the solutions of these equations are sufficient for the construction of the general sets of complete mutually unbiased bases. A few examples are presented in order to show how our algorithm works in the cases: striation table with three, two axes, and one and no axis in the discrete phase space.

Loss of non-Gaussianity for damped photon-subtracted thermal states

We investigate non-Gaussianity properties for a set of classical one-mode states obtained by subtracting photons from a thermal state. Three distance-type degrees of non-Gaussianity used for these states are shown to have a monotonic behaviour with respect to their mean photon number. Decaying of their non-Gaussianity under damping is found to be consistently described by the distance-type measures considered here. We also compare the dissipative evolution of non-Gaussianity when starting from $M$-photon-subtracted and $M$-photon-added thermal states

Measures of non-Gaussianity for one-mode field states

We introduce and investigate a distance-type measure of non-Gaussianity based on the quantum fidelity. This new measure can readily be evaluated for all pure states and mixed states that are diagonal in the Fock basis. In particular, for an $M$-photon added thermal state, an analysis of the Bures degree of non-Gaussianity is made in comparison with two previous measures built with the Hilbert-Schmidt metric and the relative entropy. We obtain a compact analytic formula for the Hilbert-Schmidt non-Gaussianity measure and find a good consistency of the three examined measures.

Comment on "Entanglement transformation between two-qubit mixed states by LOCC" [Phys. Lett. A 373 (2009) 3610]

The paper [Phys. Lett. A 373 (2009) 3610] by D.-C. Li analyzes the transformation between two-qubit mixed states by local operations and classical communication. We show that the proof of the main theorem, Theorem 2.6 in [Phys. Lett. A 373 (2009) 3610] is not complete. Therefore the generalization of Nielsen's theorem to mixed states still remains an open problem.

Probing light polarization with the quantum Chernoff bound

We recall the framework of a consistent quantum description of polarization of light. Accordingly, the degree of polarization of a two-mode state $\hat ρ$ of the quantum radiation field can be defined as a distance of a related state ${\hat ρ}_b$ to the convex set of all SU(2) invariant two-mode states. We explore a distance-type polarization measure in terms of the quantum Chernoff bound and derive its explicit expression. A comparison between the Chernoff and Bures degrees of polarization leads to interesting conclusions for some particular states chosen as illustrative examples.

Asymmetric two-output quantum processor in any dimension

We propose two different implementations of an asymmetric two-output probabilistic quantum processor, which can implement a restricted set of one-qubit operations. One of them is constructed by combining asymmetric telecloning with a quantum gate array. We analyze the efficiency of this processor by evaluating the fidelities between the desired operation and the one generated by the processor and show that the two output states are the same as the ones produced by the optimal universal asymmetric Pauli cloning machine. The schemes require only local operations and classical communication, they have the advantage of transmitting the two output states directly to two spatially separated receivers but they have a success probability of 1/2. We show further that we can perform the same one-qubit operation with unity probability at the cost of using nonlocal operations. We finally generalize the two schemes for D-level systems and find that the local ones are successful with a probability of 1/D and the nonlocal generalized scheme is always successful.
