The Veneziano Amplitude via Mostly BRST Exact Operator

The Veneziano amplitude is derived from fixing one degree of freedom of $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})$ symmetry by the insertion of a mostly BRST exact operator. Evaluating the five-point function which consists of four open string tachyons and this gauge fixing operator, we find it equals the Veneziano amplitude up to a sign factor. The sign factor is interpreted as a signed intersection number. The result implies that the mostly BRST exact operator, which is originally used to provide two-point string amplitudes, correctly fixes the $PSL(2,\mathbb{R})$ gauge symmetry for general amplitudes. We conjecture an expression for general $n$-point tree amplitudes with an insertion of this gauge fixing operator.

Comments on Observables for Identity-Based Marginal Solutions in Berkovits' Superstring Field Theory

We construct an analytic solution for tachyon condensation around identity-based marginal solutions in Berkovits' WZW-like open superstring field theory. Using this, which is a kind of wedge-based solution, the gauge invariant overlaps for the identity-based marginal solutions can be calculated analytically. This is a straightforward extension of a method in bosonic string field theory, which has been elaborated by the authors, to superstring. We also comment on a gauge equivalence relation between the tachyon vacuum solution and its marginally deformed one. From this viewpoint, we can find the vacuum energy of the identity-based marginal solutions to be zero, which agrees with the previous result as a consequence of $ξ$ zero mode counting.

Observables for identity-based tachyon vacuum solutions

We consider a modified KBc algebra in bosonic open string field theory expanded around identity-based scalar solutions. By use of the algebra, classical solutions on the background are constructed and observables for them, including energy densities and gauge invariant overlaps, are calculable. These results are applied to evaluate observables analytically for both of the identity-based trivial pure gauge solution and the identity-based tachyon vacuum solution.

Gauge Invariant Overlaps for Identity-Based Marginal Solutions

We investigate identity-based solutions associated with marginal deformations in open string field theory. We find that the identity-based marginal solutions can be represented as a difference of wedge-based solutions plus an integration of a deformed BRST exact state. Using this expression, the gauge invariant overlap can be calculated analytically for the identity-based solutions. Moreover, we show that, by gauge transformation, the overlap is transformed into a disk correlation function with the integrations of currents at the boundary.

Numerical Solutions of Open String Field Theory in Marginally Deformed Backgrounds

We investigate numerical solutions of bosonic open string field theory in some marginally deformed backgrounds, which are obtained by expanding the action around an identity-based marginal solution with one parameter. We construct numerical solutions in the Siegel gauge and the Landau gauge corresponding to the tachyon vacuum. Their vacuum energy approximately cancels the D-brane tension for larger intervals of the parameter with increasing truncation level. The result is consistent with the previous expectation that the identity-based marginal solution has vanishing energy regardless of the values of the parameter. We also study the marginal branch (M-branch) and the vacuum branch (V-branch) and evaluate not only the vacuum energy but also the gauge invariant overlaps with the graviton and the closed tachyon. We observe that there is a finite bound for the value of the massless field of numerical solutions even in the marginally deformed background.

Tachyon Vacuum of Bosonic Open String Field Theory in Marginally Deformed Backgrounds

We consider bosonic open string field theory in marginally deformed backgrounds, which is obtained by expanding the string field around the identity-based solutions associated with marginal deformations. We find a new set of string fields which satisfies the KBc algebra, but the nilpotent kinetic operator is that of the theory expanded around the identity-based marginal solution. By use of these string fields, we construct the tachyon vaccum solution in marginally deformed backgrounds. The vacuum energy density is equivalent to that of the tachyon vacuum without marginal deformations. The gauge invariant overlap is changed according to the effect of marginal deformations, as expected from known results in CFT. These results suggest that the vacuum energy is zero for the identity-based marginal solutions in the original theory.

Homotopy Operators and One-Loop Vacuum Energy at the Tachyon Vacuum

We construct the homotopy operators for the BRST operator in the theory around the identity-based solutions, which are believed to represent the tachyon vacuum in cubic bosonic open string field theory. Using the homotopy operators, we find that the one-loop vacuum energy at the tachyon vacuum is independent of moduli such as interbrane distances, which are included in the BRST operator. We also revisit the cohomology problem, which was solved earlier without the homotopy operators.

On Nontrivial Solutions around a Marginal Solution in Cubic Superstring Field Theory

We construct tachyon vacuum and half-brane solutions, using an extension of KBc algebra, in the theory around a type of identity-based marginal solutions in modified cubic superstring field theory. With explicit computations, we find that their vacuum energies are the same as those of corresponding solutions around the original theory. It implies that the vacuum energy for the identity-based marginal solution vanishes although straightforward computation of it is subtle. We also evaluate the gauge invariant overlaps for those nontrivial solutions. The values for them are deformed according to the marginal solution in the same way as the case of bosonic string field theory.

Homotopy Operators and Identity-Based Solutions in Cubic Superstring Field Theory

We construct a class of nilpotent operators using the BRST current and ghost fields in superstring theory. The operator can be realized in cubic superstring field theory as a kinetic operator in the background of an identity-based solution. For a particular type of the deformed BRST operators, we find a homotopy operator and discuss its relationship to the cohomology in a similar way to the bosonic case, which has been elaborated by the authors.

An Algebraic Model for the su(2|2) Light-Cone String Field Theory

We investigate algebraic structure of light-cone string field theory which respects the spacetime supersymmetry su(2|2). Extracting building blocks from the explicit oscillator expressions of light-cone superstring field theory on the pp-wave and the flat background, we propose a model for more generic backgrounds by giving an algebraic procedure to construct supercharges and Hamiltonian without referring to explicit oscillator expressions. Based on this strategy, we systematically construct interaction terms of light-cone string field theory on the pp-wave background and some examples of its generalization. We also study the supergravity limit of the interaction terms on the pp-wave background.

Exploring Vacuum Structure around Identity-Based Solutions

We explore the vacuum structure in bosonic open string field theory expanded around an identity-based solution parameterized by $a(>=-1/2)$. Analyzing the expanded theory using level truncation approximation up to level 20, we find that the theory has the tachyon vacuum solution for $a>-1/2$. We also find that, at $a=-1/2$, there exists an unstable vacuum solution in the expanded theory and the solution is expected to be the perturbative open string vacuum. These results reasonably support the expectation that the identity-based solution is a trivial pure gauge configuration for $a>-1/2$, but it can be regarded as the tachyon vacuum solution at $a=-1/2$.

Numerical Evaluation of Gauge Invariants for a-gauge Solutions in Open String Field Theory

We evaluate gauge invariants, action and gauge invariant overlap, for numerical solutions which satisfy the "a-gauge" condition with various values of $a$ in cubic open bosonic string field theory. We use the level truncation approximation and an iterative procedure to construct numerical solutions in the twist even universal space. The resulting gauge invariants are numerically stable and almost equal to those of Schnabl's solution for tachyon condensation. Our result provides further evidence that these numerical and analytical solutions are gauge equivalent.

On LCSFT/MST Correspondence

It was suggested that light-cone superstring field theory (LCSFT) and matrix string theory (MST) are closely related. Especially the bosonic twist fields and the fermionic spin fields in MST correspond to the string interaction vertices in LCSFT. Since CFT operators are characterized by their OPEs, in our previous work we realized the most important OPE of the twist fields by computing contractions of the interaction vertices using the bosonic cousin of LCSFT. Here using the full LCSFT we generalize our previous work into the realization of OPEs for a vast class of operators.

Cardy states as idempotents of fusion ring in string field theory

With some assumptions, the algebra between Ishibashi states in string field theory can be reduced to a commutative ring. From this viewpoint, Cardy states can be identified with its idempotents. The algebra can be identified with a fusion ring for the rational conformal field theory and a group ring for the orbifold. This observation supports our previous observation that boundary states satisfy a universal idempotency relation under closed string star product.

Cardy states, factorization and idempotency in closed string field theory

We show that boundary states in the generic on-shell background satisfy a universal nonlinear equation of closed string field theory. It generalizes our previous claim for the flat background. The origin of the equation is factorization relation of boundary conformal field theory which is always true as an axiom. The equation necessarily incorporates the information of open string sector through a regularization, which implies the equivalence with Cardy condition. We also give a more direct proof by oscillator representations for some nontrivial backgrounds (torus and orbifolds). Finally we discuss some properties of the closed string star product for non-vanishing $B$ field and find that a commutative and non-associative product (Strachan product) appears naturally in Seiberg-Witten limit.

Boundary states as exact solutions of (vacuum) closed string field theory

We show that the boundary states are idempotent B*B=B with respect to the star product of HIKKO type closed string field theory. Variations around the boundary state correctly reproduce the open string spectrum with the gauge symmetry. We explicitly demonstrate it for the tachyonic and massless vector modes. The idempotency relation may be regarded as the equation of motion of closed string field theory at a possible vacuum.

Fuzzy Sphere and Hyperbolic Space from Deformation Quantization

We explicitly construct noncommutative * products on circularly symmetric two dimensional space by using the technique of Fedosov's deformation quantization. Especially, on constant curvature spaces i.e., S^2 and H^2, we get su(2) and su(1,1) algebra respectively. These are candidates of * products applicable to noncommutative field theories or noncommutative gauge theories on spaces with nontrivial symplectic structure.

Some Properties of String Field Algebra

We examine string field algebra which is generated by star product in Witten's string field theory including ghost part. We perform calculations using oscillator representation consistently. We construct wedge like states in ghost part and investigate algebras among them. As a by-product we have obtained some solutions of vacuum string field theory. We also discuss some problems about identity state. We hope these calculations will be useful for further investigation of Witten type string field theory.
