Light Sterile Neutrinos, Lepton Number Violating Interactions and the LSND Anomaly

We develop the consequences of introducing a purely leptonic, lepton number violating non-standard interaction (NSI) and standard model neutrino mixing with a fourth, sterile neutrino in the analysis of short-baseline, neutrino experiments. We focus on the muon decay at rest (DAR) result from the Liquid Scintillation Neutrino Experiment (LSND) and the Karlsruhe and Rutherford Medium Energy Neutrino Experiment (KARMEN). We make a comprehensive analysis of lepton number violating, NSI effective operators and find nine that affect muon decay relevant to LSND results. Two of these preserve the standard model (SM) value 3/4 for the Michel rho and delta parameters and, overall, show favorable agreement with precision data and the electron anti-neutrino signal from LSND data. We display theoretical models that lead to these two effective operators. In the model we choose to apply to DAR data, both electron anti-neutrino appearance from muon anti-neutrino oscillation and electron anti-neutrino survival after production from NSI decay of the positive muon contribute to the expected signal. This is a unique feature of our scheme. We find a range of parameters where both experiments can be accommodated consistently with recent global, sterile neutrino fits to short baseline data. We comment on implications of the models for new physics searches at colliders and comment on further implications of the lepton number violating interactions plus sterile neutrino-standard model neutrino mixing.

Minimal 3+2 sterile neutrino model at LBNE

In this paper we examine the sensitivity of the Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiment to the inclusion of two new sterile neutrino flavors with masses in the eV range. We implement a model with a modified Casas-Ibarra parametrization which can accommodate medium scale mass eigenstates and introduces a new complex mixing angle. We explore the new mixing angle parameter space and demonstrate how LBNE can be used to either provide evidence for or rule out a particular model of sterile neutrinos. Certain three-flavor CP-violation scenarios cannot be distinguished from the sterile neutrinos. Constraints from the Daya Bay reactor experiment and T2K are used to help lift this degeneracy.

Non-Standard Neutrino Interactions in the mu-tau sector

We discuss the effects of non-standard neutrino interactions on muon rates in high statistics atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments like IceCube DeepCore. We concentrate on the mu-tau sector, which is presently the least constrained. It is shown that the magnitude of the effects depends strongly on the sign of the Epsilon_MuTau parameter describing this non-standard interactions. A simple analytic model is used to understand the parameter space where differences between the two signs are maximized. We discuss how this effect is partially degenerate with changing the neutrino mass hierarchy, as well as how this degeneracy could be lifted.

Opportunities in Neutrino Theory -- a Snowmass White Paper

Neutrino masses are clear evidence for physics beyond the standard model and much more remains to be understood about the neutrino sector. We highlight some of the outstanding questions and research opportunities in neutrino theory. We show that most of these questions are directly connected to the very rich experimental program currently being pursued (or at least under serious consideration) in the United States and worldwide. Finally, we also comment on the state of the theoretical neutrino physics community in the U.S.

Atmospheric neutrino oscillations and tau neutrinos in ice

The main goal of the IceCube Deep Core Array is to search for neutrinos of astrophysical origins. Atmospheric neutrinos are commonly considered as a background for these searches. We show here that cascade measurements in the Ice Cube Deep Core Array can provide strong evidence for tau neutrino appearance in atmospheric neutrino oscillations. A careful study of these tau neutrinos is crucial, since they constitute an irreducible background for astrophysical neutrino detection.

Neutrino Oscillations, Lorentz/CPT Violation, and Dark Energy

If dark energy (DE) couples to neutrinos, then there may be apparent violations of Lorentz/CPT invariance in neutrino oscillations. The DE-induced Lorentz/CPT violation takes a specific form that introduces neutrino oscillations that are energy independent, differ for particles and antiparticles, and can lead to novel effects for neutrinos propagating through matter. We show that ultra-high-energy neutrinos may provide one avenue to seek this type of Lorentz/CPT violation in ν_μ-ν_τoscillations, improving the current sensitivity to such effects by seven orders of magnitude. Lorentz/CPT violation in electron-neutrino oscillations may be probed with the zenith-angle dependence for high-energy atmospheric neutrinos. The ``smoking gun,'' for DE-neutrino coupling would, however, be a dependence of neutrino oscillations on the direction of the neutrino momentum relative to our peculiar velocity with respect to the CMB rest frame. While the amplitude of this directional dependence is expected to be small, it may nevertheless be worth seeking in current data and may be a target for future neutrino experiments.

Hadrons as Signature of Black Hole Production at the LHC

In models with several large extra dimensions and fundamental Planck scale of the order of 1 TeV, black holes can be produced in large numbers at LHC energies. We compute the charged hadron spectra obtained from the decay of black holes created in p-p and Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. We show that hadrons from black hole decay dominate at transverse momenta p_T>30-100 GeV/c compared to usual QCD processes and black hole production signals are easy to identify in hadron transverse momentum spectra. Furthermore we show that a measurement of the charged hadron spectra probes Planck scales up to ~5 TeV for any number of extra dimensions.

Neutrino Oscillations with Two $Δm^2$ Scales

An approximation that is often used in fits to reactor and atmospheric neutrino data and in some studies of future neutrino oscillation experiments is to assume one dominant scale, $Δm^2$, of neutrino mass squared differences, in particular, $Δm^2_{atm} \sim 3 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$. Here we investigate the corrections to this approximation arising from the quantity $Δm^2_{sol}$ relevant for solar neutrino oscillations, assuming the large mixing angle solution. We show that for values of $\sin^2(2θ_{13}) \sim 10^{-2}$ (in the range of interest for long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments with either intense conventional neutrino beams such as JHF-SuperK or a possible future neutrino factory) and for $Δm^2_{sol} \sim 10^{-4}$ eV$^2$, the contributions to $ν_μ\toν_e$ oscillations from both CP-conserving and CP-violating terms involving $\sin^2(Δm^2_{sol}L/(4E))$ can be comparable to the terms involving $\sin^2(Δm^2_{atm}L/(4E))$ retained in the one-$Δm^2$ approximation. Accordingly, we emphasize the importance of performing a full three-flavor, two-$Δm^2$ analysis of the data on $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillations in a conventional-beam experiment and $ν_e \to ν_μ$, $\barν_e \to \barν_μ$ oscillations at a neutrino factory. We also discuss a generalized analysis method for the KamLAND reactor experiment, and note how the information from this experiment can be used to facilitate the analysis of the subsequent data on $ν_μ\to ν_e$ oscillations. Finally, we consider the analysis of atmospheric neutrino data and present calculations of matter effects in a three-flavor, two-$Δm^2$ framework relevant to this data and to neutrino factory measurements.

Matter Effects on Long Baseline Neutrino Oscillation Experiments

We calculate matter effects on neutrino oscillations relevant for long baseline neutrino oscillation experiments. In particular, we compare the results obtained with simplifying approximations for the density profile in the Earth versus results obtained with actual density profiles. We study the dependence of the oscillation signals on both $E/Δm^2_{atm.}$ and on the angles in the leptonic mixing matrix. The results show quantitatively how matter effects can cause significant changes in the oscillation signals, relative to vacuum oscillations and can be useful in amplifying these signals and helping one to obtain measurements of mixing parameters and the magnitude and sign of $Δm^2$.
