Complex hyperbolic orbifolds and Lefschetz fibrations

A class of complex hyperbolic lattices in PU(2,1) called the Deligne-Mostow lattices has been reinterpreted by Hirzebruch and others in terms of line arrangements. They use branched covers over a suitable blow up of the complete quadrilateral arrangement of lines in projective 2-space to construct the complex hyperbolic surfaces over the orbifolds associated to the lattices. Fundamental domains for these lattices have been built by Pasquinelli. Here we show how the fundamental domains can be interpreted in terms of line arrangements as above. This parallel is then applied in two contexts. Dashyan uses Hirzebruch's construction to build infinitely many representations of 3-manifolds. Here we show that his construction can be generalised to all of the Deligne-Mostow lattices and more representations can be built. Wells shows that two of the Deligne-Mostow lattices in PU(2,1) can be seen as hybrids of lattices in PU(1,1). Here we show that he implicitly uses the line arrangement and we complete his analysis to all possible pairs of lines. In this way, we show that three more Deligne-Mostow lattices can be given as hybrids.

Deligne-Mostow lattices with three fold symmetry and cone metrics on the sphere

Deligne and Mostow constructed a class of lattices in PU(2,1) using monodromy of hypergeometric functions. Later, Thurston reinterpreted them in terms of cone metrics on the sphere. In this spirit we construct a fundamental domain for all lattices with three fold symmetry in Deligne-Mostow list. This is a generalisation of the works of Parker and Boadi and gives a different interpretation of the fundamental domain constructed by Deraux, Falbel and Paupert for some of these lattices.

Cutting sequences in Veech surfaces

A cutting sequence is a symbolic coding of a linear trajectory on a translation surface corresponding to the sequence of sides hit in a polygonal representation of the surface. We characterize cutting sequences in a regular hexagon with opposite sides identified by translations exploiting the same procedure used by Smillie and Ulcigrai for the regular octagon. In the case of the square, cutting sequences are the well known Sturmian sequences. We remark the differences between the procedure used in the case of the square and the one used in the cases of the regular hexagon and regular octagon. We also show how to adapt the latter to work also in the case of the square, giving a new characterization for this case. We also show how to create a dictionary to pass from the symbolic coding with respect to the hexagon to the symbolic coding with respect to the parallelogram representing it in the space of flat tori. Finally we consider the Bouw-Möller surfaces $\mathscr M(3,4)$ and $\mathscr M(4,3)$ and we use their semi-regular polygons representations to prove our main result, which is a theorem analogous to the central step used to characterize cutting sequences in the previous cases.
