Second-order energy-momentum tensor of a scalar field

We investigate the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor (2EMT) constructed by the quadratic terms of the linear scalar cosmological perturbations while the universe is dominated by a scalar field. We show that 2EMT is gauge dependent. We then study 2EMT in three (longitudinal, spatially flat, and comoving) gauge conditions in the slow-roll stage of inflation. We find that 2EMT exhibits an effective fluid of w=-1/3 on super-horizon scales in all of those gauge conditions.

Second-order effective energy-momentum tensor of gravitational scalar perturbations with perfect fluid

We investigate the second-order gravitational scalar perturbations for a barotropic fluid. We derive the effective energy-momentum tensor described by the quadratic terms of the gravitational and the matter perturbations. We show that the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor is gauge dependent. We impose three gauge conditions (longitudinal, spatially-flat, and comoving gauges) for dust and radiation. The resulting energy-momentum tensor is described only by a gauge invariant variable, but the functional form depends on the gauge choice. In the matter-dominated epoch with dust-like fluid background, the second-order effective energy density and pressure of the perturbations evolve as 1/a^2 in all three gauge choices, like the curvature density of the Universe, but they do not provide the correct equation of state. The value of this parameter depends also on the gauge choice. In the radiation-dominated epoch, the perturbations in the short-wave limit behave in the same way as the radiation-like fluid in the longitudinal and the spatially-flat gauges. However, they behave in a different way in the comoving gauge. As a whole, we conclude that the second-order effective energy-momentum tensor of the scalar perturbation is strictly gauge dependent.

Primordial Power Spectra of EiBI Inflation in Strong Gravity Limit

We investigate the scalar and the tensor perturbations of the $φ^2$ inflation model in the strong-gravity limit of Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) theory. In order to consider the strong EiBI-gravity effect, we take the value of $κ$ large, where $κ$ is the EiBI theory parameter. The energy density of the Universe at the early stage is very high, and the Universe is in a strong-gravity regime. Therefore, the perturbation feature is not altered from what was investigated earlier. At the attractor inflationary stage, however, the feature is changed in the strong EiBI-gravity limit. The correction to the scalar perturbation in this limit comes mainly via the background matter field, while that to the tensor perturbation comes directly from the gravity ($κ$) effect. The change in the value of the scalar spectrum is little compared with that in the weak EiBI-gravity limit, or in GR. The form of the tensor spectrum is the same with that in the weak limit, but the value of the spectrum can be suppressed down to zero in the strong limit. Therefore, the resulting tensor-to-scalar ratio can also be suppressed in the same way, which makes $φ^2$ model in EiBI theory viable.

Scalar Perturbation Produced at the Pre-inflationary Stage in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Gravity

We investigate the scalar perturbation produced at the pre-inflationary stage driven by a massive scalar field in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. The scalar power spectrum exhibits a peculiar rise for low $k$-modes. The tensor-to-scalar ratio can be significantly lowered compared with that in the standard chaotic inflation model in general relativity. This result is very affirmative considering the recent dispute on the detection of the gravitational wave radiation between PLANCK and BICEP2.

Spectral indices in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld inflation

We investigate the scalar and tensor spectral indices of the quadratic inflation model in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld (EiBI) gravity. We find that the EiBI corrections to the spectral indices are of second and first order in the slow-roll approximation for the scalar and tensor perturbations respectively. This is very promising since the quadratic inflation model in general relativity provides a very nice fit for the spectral indices. Together with the suppression of the tensor-to-scalar ratio EiBI inflation agrees well with the observational data.

Unimodular Theory of Gravity and Inflation

We investigate inflation and its scalar perturbation driven by a massive scalar field in the unimodular theory of gravity. We introduce a parameter $ξ$ with which the theory is invariant under general unimodular coordinate transformations. When the unimodular parameter is $ξ=6$, the classical picture of inflation is reproduced in the unimodular theory because it recovers the background equations of the standard theory of general relativity. We show that for $ξ=6$, the theory is equivalent to the standard theory of general relativity at the perturbation level. Unimodular gravity constrains the gauge degree of freedom in the scalar perturbation, but the perturbation equations are similar to those in general relativity. For $ξ\neq 6$, we derive the power spectrum and the spectral index, and obtain the unimodular correction to the tensor-to-scalar ratio. Depending on the value of $ξ$, the correction can either raise or lower the value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

Inflationary Tensor Perturbation in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity

We investigate the tensor perturbation in the inflation model driven by a massive-scalar field in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. For short wave-length modes, the perturbation feature is very similar to that of the usual chaotic inflation. For long wave-length modes, the perturbation exhibits a peculiar rise in the power spectrum which may leave a signature in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Tensor-to-Scalar Ratio in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Inflation

We investigate the scalar perturbation of the inflation model driven by a massive-scalar field in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. We focus on the perturbation at the attractor stage in which the first and the second slow-roll conditions are satisfied. The scalar perturbation exhibits the corrections to the chaotic inflation model in general relativity. We find that the tensor-to-scalar ratio becomes smaller than that of the usual chaotic inflation.

A new synthesis of matter and gravity: A nongravitating scalar field

We present a new manifestation of the nonlinearity of the gravity-matter interactions. We show explicitly that there exists a nongravitating dynamical scalar-field solution in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. This kind of solution has not been found in previous literatures based on general relativity, or other modified-gravity theories. The nongravitating solution obtained in this work is unstable to perturbations.

Precursor of Inflation

We investigate a nonsingular initial state of the Universe which leads to inflation naturally. The model is described by a scalar field with a quadratic potential in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. The curvature of this initial state is given by the mass scale of the scalar field which is much smaller than the Planck scale. Therefore, in this model, quantum gravity is not necessary in understanding this pre-inflationary stage, no matter how large the energy density becomes. The initial state in this model evolves eventually to a long inflationary period which is similar to the usual chaotic inflation.

Perturbations in Symmetric Lee-Wick Bouncing Universe

We investigate the tensor and the scalar perturbations in the symmetric bouncing universe driven by one ordinary field and its Lee-Wick partner field which is a ghost. We obtain the even- and the odd-mode functions of the tensor perturbation in the matter-dominated regime. The tensor perturbation grows in time during the contracting phase of the Universe, and decays during the expanding phase. The power spectrum for the tensor perturbation is evaluated and the spectral index is given by $n_{\rm T} =6$. We add the analysis on the scalar perturbation by inspecting the even- and the odd-mode functions in the matter-dominated regime, which was studied numerically in our previous work. We conclude that the comoving curvature by the scalar perturbation is constant in the super-horizon scale and starts to decay in the far sub-horizon scale while the Universe expands.

Universe Driven by Perfect Fluid in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld Gravity

We investigate the evolution of the Universe filled with barotropic perfect fluid in Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity. We consider both the isotropic and the anisotropic universe. At the early stage when the energy density is high, the evolution is modified considerably compared with that in general relativity. For the equation-of-state parameter $w>0$, the initial singularity is not accompanied as it was discovered for radiation in earlier work. More interestingly, for pressureless dust ($w=0$), the initial state approaches a de Sitter state. This fact opens a new possibility of singularity-free nature of the theory. The anisotropy is mild, and does not develop curvature singularities in spacetime contrary to general relativity.

Scalar Perturbation in Symmetric Lee-Wick Bouncing Universe

We investigate the scalar perturbation in the Lee-Wick bouncing universe driven by an ordinary scalar field plus a ghost field. We consider only a symmetric evolution of the universe and the scalar fields about the bouncing point. The gauge invariant Sasaki-Mukhanov variable is numerically solved in the spatially flat gauge. We find a new form of the initial perturbation growing during the contracting phase. After the bouncing, this growing mode stabilizes to a constant mode which is responsible for the late-time power spectrum.

Generalized Lee-Wick Formulation from Higher Derivative Field Theories

We study a higher derivative (HD) field theory with an arbitrary order of derivative for a real scalar field. The degree of freedom for the HD field can be converted to multiple fields with canonical kinetic terms up to the overall sign. The Lagrangian describing the dynamics of the multiple fields is known as the Lee-Wick (LW) form. The first step to obtain the LW form for a given HD Lagrangian is to find an auxiliary field (AF) Lagrangian which is equivalent to the original HD Lagrangian up to the quantum level. Till now, the AF Lagrangian has been studied only for N=2 and 3 cases, where $N$ is the number of poles of the two-point function of the HD scalar field. We construct the AF Lagrangian for arbitrary $N$. By the linear combinations of AF fields, we also obtain the corresponding LW form. We find the explicit mapping matrices among the HD fields, the AF fields, and the LW fields. As an exercise of our construction, we calculate the relations among parameters and mapping matrices for $N=2,3$, and 4 cases.

Four dimensional string solutions in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity

We investigate string-like solutions in four dimensions based on Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. For a restricted class of solutions where the Cotton tensor vanishes, we find that the string-like solutions in Einstein gravity including the BTZ black strings are solutions in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity as well. The geometry is warped in the same way as in Einstein gravity, but the "conformal" lapse function is not constrained in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. It turns out that if $λ\ne 1$, there exist no other solutions. For the value of model parameter with which Einstein gravity recovers in IR limit (i.e., $λ=1$), there exists an additional solution of which the conformal lapse function is determined. Interestingly, this solution admits a uniform BTZ black string along the string direction, which is distinguished from the warped BTZ black string in Einstein gravity. Therefore, it is a good candidate for the test of the theory.

Multi-BPS D-vortices

We investigate the BPS configuration of the multi D-vortices produced from the D2${\bar {\rm D}}$2 system. Based on the DBI-type action with a Gaussian-type runaway potential for a complex tachyon field, the BPS limit is achieved when the tachyon profile is thin. The solution states randomly-distributed $n$ static D-vortices with zero interaction. With the obtained BPS configuration, we derive the relativistic Lagrangian which describes the dynamics of free massive D-vortices. We also discuss the 90${}^{\circ}$ and 180${}^{\circ}$ scattering of two identical D-vortices, and present its implications on the reconnection in the dynamics of cosmic superstrings.

Spacetime structure of 5D hypercylindrical vacuum solutions with tension

We investigate geometrical properties of 5D cylindrical vacuum solutions with a transverse spherical symmetry. The metric is uniform along the fifth direction and characterized by tension and mass densities. The solutions are classified by the tension-to-mass ratio. One particular example is the well-known Schwarzschild black string which has a curvature singularity enclosed by a horizon. We focus mainly on geometry of other solutions which possess a naked singularity. The light signal emitted by an object approaching the singularity reaches a distant observer with finite time, but is infinitely red-shifted.

Evolution of Tachyon Kink with Electric Field

We investigate the decay of an inhomogeneous D1-brane wrapped on a $S^1$ with an electric field. The model that we consider consists of an array of tachyon kink and anti-kink with a constant electric flux. Beginning with an initially static configuration, we numerically evolve the tachyon field with some perturbations under a fixed boundary condition at diametrically opposite points on the circle $S^1$. When the electric flux is smaller than the critical value, the tachyon kink becomes unstable; the tachyon field rolls down the potential, and the lower dimensional D0- and $\bar {\rm D}0$-brane become thin, which resembles the caustic formation known for this type of the system in the literature. For the supercritical values of the electric flux, the tachyon kink remains stable.

A universe in a global monopole

We investigate brane physics in a universe with an extra dimensional global monopole and negative bulk cosmological constant. The graviton zero mode is naturally divergent; we thus invoke a physical cut-off to induce four dimensional gravity on a brane at the monopole core. Independently, the massive Kaluza-Klein modes have naturally compactified extra dimensions, inducing a discrete spectrum. This spectrum remains consistent with four dimensional gravity on the brane, even for small mass gap. Extra dimensional matter fields also induce four dimensional matter fields on the brane, with the same Kaluza-Klein spectrum of excited states. We choose parameters to solve the hierarchy problem; that is, to induce the observed hierarchy between particle and Planck scales in the effective four dimensional universe.

Gravitational field of vacuumless defects

It has been recently shown that topological defects can arise in symmetry breaking models where the scalar field potential $V(ϕ)$ has no minima and is a monotonically decreasing function of $|ϕ|$. Here we study the gravitational fields produced by such vacuumless defects in the cases of both global and gauge symmetry breaking. We find that a global monopole has a strongly repulsive gravitational field, and its spacetime has an event horizon similar to that in de Sitter space. A gauge monopole spacetime is essentially that of a magnetically charged black hole. The gravitational field of a global string is repulsive and that of a gauge string is attractive at small distances and repulsive at large distances. Both gauge and global string spacetimes have singularities at a finite distance from the string core.
