Axi-symmetric solutions for active vector models generalizing 3D Euler and electron--MHD equations

We study systems interpolating between the 3D incompressible Euler and electron--MHD equations, given by \begin{equation*} \partial_t B + V \cdot \nabla B = B\cdot \nabla V, \qquad V = -\nabla\times (-Δ)^{-a} B, \qquad \nabla\cdot B = 0, \end{equation*} where BB is a time-dependent vector field in R3\mathbb{R}^3. Under the assumption that the initial data is axi-symmetric without swirl, we prove local well-posedness of Lipschitz continuous solutions and existence of traveling waves in the range 1/2<a<11/2<a<1. These generalize the corresponding results for the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations and should be useful in the study of stability and instability for axisymmetric solutions.

Stability and instability of Kelvin waves

The mm-waves of Kelvin are uniformly rotating patch solutions of the 2D Euler equations with mm-fold rotational symmetry for m≥2m\geq 2. For Kelvin waves sufficiently close to the disc, we prove a nonlinear stability result up to an arbitrarily long time in the L1L^1 norm of the vorticity, for mm-fold symmetric perturbations. To obtain this result, we first prove that the Kelvin wave is a strict local maximizer of the energy functional in some admissible class of patches, which had been claimed by Wan in 1986. This gives an orbital stability result with a support condition on the evolution of perturbations, but using a Lagrangian bootstrap argument which traces the particle trajectories of the perturbation, we are able to drop the condition on the evolution. Based on this unconditional stability result, we establish that long time filamentation, or formation of long arms, occurs near the Kelvin waves, which have been observed in various numerical simulations. Additionally, we discuss stability of annular patches in the same variational framework.

Well-posedness and singularity formation for Vlasov--Riesz system

We investigate the Cauchy problem for the Vlasov--Riesz system, which is a Vlasov equation featuring an interaction potential generalizing previously studied cases, including the Coulomb Φ=(−Δ)−1ρΦ= (-Δ)^{-1}ρ, Manev (−Δ)−1+(−Δ)−12(-Δ)^{-1} + (-Δ)^{-\frac12}, and pure Manev (−Δ)−12(-Δ)^{-\frac12} potentials. For the first time, we extend the local theory of classical solutions to potentials more singular than that for the Manev. Then, we obtain finite-time singularity formation for solutions with various attractive interaction potentials, extending the well-known blow-up result of Horst for attractive Vlasov--Poisson for d≥4d\ge4. Our local well-posedness and singularity formation results extend to cases when linear diffusion and damping in velocity are present.

On the Cauchy problem for the Hall and electron magnetohydrodynamic equations without resistivity I: illposedness near degenerate stationary solutions

In this article, we prove various illposedness results for the Cauchy problem for the incompressible Hall- and electron-magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations without resistivity. These PDEs are fluid descriptions of plasmas, where the effect of collisions is neglected (no resistivity), while the motion of the electrons relative to the ions (Hall current term) is taken into account. The Hall current term endows the magnetic field equation with a quasilinear dispersive character, which is key to our mechanism for illposedness. Perhaps the most striking conclusion of this article is that the Cauchy problems for the Hall-MHD (either viscous or inviscid) and the electron-MHD equations, under one translational symmetry, are ill-posed near the trivial solution in any sufficiently high regularity Sobolev space and even in Gevrey spaces. This result holds despite obvious wellposedness of the linearized equations near the trivial solution, as well as conservation of the nonlinear energy, by which the L2L^{2} norm (energy) of the solution stays constant in time. The core illposedness mechanism is degeneration of certain high frequency wave packet solutions to the linearization around a class of linearly degenerate stationary solutions of these equations, which are essentially dispersive equations with degenerate principal symbols. The method developed in this work is sharp and robust, in that we also prove nonlinear HsH^{s}-illposedness in the presence of fractional dissipation of any order less than 1, matching known wellposedness results. The results in this article are complemented by a companion work, where we provide geometric conditions on the initial magnetic field that ensure wellposedness(!) of the Cauchy problem. In particular, in stark contrast to the results here, it is shown in the companion work that the nonlinear Cauchy problems are well-posed near any nonzero constant magnetic field.

Relaxation to fractional porous medium equation from Euler--Riesz system

We perform asymptotic analysis for the Euler--Riesz system posed in either Td\mathbb{T}^d or Rd\mathbb{R}^d in the high-force regime and establish a quantified relaxation limit result from the Euler--Riesz system to the fractional porous medium equation. We provide a unified approach for asymptotic analysis regardless of the presence of pressure, based on the modulated energy estimates, the Wasserstein distance of order 22, and the bounded Lipschitz distance.

Well-posedness and singularity formation for inviscid Keller-Segel-fluid system of consumption type

We consider the Keller-Segel system of consumption type coupled with an incompressible fluid equation. The system describes the dynamics of oxygen and bacteria densities evolving within a fluid. We establish local well-posedness of the system in Sobolev spaces for partially inviscid and fully inviscid cases. In the latter, additional assumptions on the initial data are required when either the oxygen or bacteria density touches zero. Even though the oxygen density satisfies a maximum principle due to consumption, we prove finite time blow-up of its C2C^{2}--norm with certain initial data.

Anomalous Dissipation in Passive Scalar Transport

We study anomalous dissipation in hydrodynamic turbulence in the context of passive scalars. Our main result produces an incompressible C∞([0,T)×Td)∩L1([0,T];C1−(Td))C^\infty([0,T)\times \mathbb{T}^d)\cap L^1([0,T]; C^{1-}(\mathbb{T}^d)) velocity field which explicitly exhibits anomalous dissipation. As a consequence, this example also shows non-uniqueness of solutions to the transport equation with an incompressible L1([0,T];C1−(Td))L^1([0,T]; C^{1-}(\mathbb{T}^d)) drift, which is smooth except at one point in time. We also provide three sufficient conditions for anomalous dissipation provided solutions to the inviscid equation become singular in a controlled way. Finally, we discuss connections to the Obukhov-Corrsin monofractal theory of scalar turbulence along with other potential applications.

Enstrophy dissipation and vortex thinning for the incompressible 2D Navier-Stokes equations

By direct numerical simulation to the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with small-scale forcing and large-scale damping, Xiao-Wan-Chen-Eyink (2009) found an evidence that inverse energy cascade may proceed with the vortex thinning mechanism. On the other hand, Alexakis-Doering (2006) calculated upper bound of the bulk averaged enstrophy dissipation rate of the steady-state two dimensional turbulence. {In this paper, we show that vortex thinning induces enhanced dissipation with strictly slower vanishing order of the enstrophy dissipation than Re−1Re^{-1}.}

Growth of perimeter for vortex patches in a bulk

We consider the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations. We construct vortex patches with smooth boundary on T2T^2 and R2R^2 whose perimeter grows with time. More precisely, for any constant M>0M > 0, we construct a vortex patch in T2T^2 whose smooth boundary has length of order 1 at the initial time such that the perimeter grows up to the given constant MM within finite time. The construction is done by cutting a thin stick out of an almost square patch. A similar result holds for an almost round patch with a thin handle in R2R^2.

On well-posedness and singularity formation for the Euler-Riesz system

In this paper, we investigate the initial value problem for the Euler-Riesz system, where the interaction forcing is given by ∇(−Δ)sρ\nabla(-Δ)^{s}ρ for some −1<s<0-1<s<0, with s=−1s = -1 corresponding to the classical Euler-Poisson system. We develop a functional framework to establish local-in-time existence and uniqueness of classical solutions for the Euler-Riesz system. In this framework, the fluid density could decay fast at infinity, and the Euler-Poisson system can be covered as a special case. Moreover, we prove local well-posedness for the pressureless Euler-Riesz system when the potential is repulsive, by observing hyperbolic nature of the system. Finally, we present sufficient conditions on the finite-time blowup of classical solutions for the isentropic/isothermal Euler-Riesz system with either attractive or repulsive interaction forces. The proof, which is based on estimates of several physical quantities, establishes finite-time blowup for a large class of initial data; in particular, it is not required that the density is of compact support.

The incompressible Euler equations under octahedral symmetry: singularity formation in a fundamental domain

We consider the 3D incompressible Euler equations in vorticity form in the following fundamental domain for the octahedral symmetry group: {(x1,x2,x3):0<x3<x2<x1}.\{ (x_1,x_2,x_3): 0<x_3<x_2<x_1 \}. In this domain, we prove local well-posedness for CαC^α vorticities not necessarily vanishing on the boundary with any 0<α<10<α<1, and establish finite-time singularity formation within the same class for smooth and compactly supported initial data. The solutions can be extended to all of R3\mathbb{R}^3 via a sequence of reflections, and therefore we obtain finite-time singularity formation for the 3D Euler equations in R3\mathbb{R}^3 with bounded and piecewise smooth vorticities.

A Limit Theorem for Stochastically Decaying Partitions at the Edge

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of the first, second, and so on rows of stochastically decaying partitions. We establish that, with appropriate scaling in time and length, the sequence of rows converges to the Airy2_2 line ensemble. This result was first established, in a more general setting, by Borodin and Olshanski, who relied on the determinantal structure of the Poissonized correlation functions. Our argument is based on a different, combinatorial approach, developed by Okounkov. This approach may be useful in other problems in which no determinantal structure is available, and also highlights the similarity between random partitions and random matrices.

Outer Billiards with Contraction: Attracting Cantor Sets

We consider the outer billiards map with contraction outside polygons. We construct a 1-parameter family of systems such that each system has an open set in which the dynamics is reduced to that of a piecewise contraction on the interval. Using the theory of rotation numbers, we deduce that every point inside the open set is asymptotic to either a single periodic orbit (rational case) or a Cantor set (irrational case). In particular, we deduce existence of an attracting Cantor set for certain parameter values. Moreover, for a different choice of a 1-parameter family, we prove that the system is uniquely ergodic; in particular, the entire domain is asymptotic to a single attractor.

Outer Billiards with Contraction: Regular Polygons

We study outer billiards with contraction outside regular polygons. For regular nn-gons with n=3,4,5,6,8n = 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 1212, we show that as the contraction rate approaches 11, dynamics of the system converges, in a certain sense, to that of the usual outer billiards map. These are precisely the values of n≥3n \geq 3 with [Q(e2πi/n):Q]≤2[\mathbb{Q}(e^{2πi/n}):\mathbb{Q}] \leq 2. Then we discuss how such convergence may fail in the case of n=7n=7.
