Elementary operators on Hilbert modules over prime $C^*$-algebras

Let $X$ be a right Hilbert module over a $C^*$-algebra $A$ equipped with the canonical operator space structure. We define an elementary operator on $X$ as a map $ϕ: X \to X$ for which there exists a finite number of elements $u_i$ in the $C^*$-algebra $\mathbb{B}(X)$ of adjointable operators on $X$ and $v_i$ in the multiplier algebra $M(A)$ of $A$ such that $ϕ(x)=\sum_i u_i xv_i$ for $x \in X$. If $X=A$ this notion agrees with the standard notion of an elementary operator on $A$. In this paper we extend Mathieu's theorem for elementary operators on prime $C^*$-algebras by showing that the completely bounded norm of each elementary operator on a non-zero Hilbert $A$-module $X$ agrees with the Haagerup norm of its corresponding tensor in $\mathbb{B}(X)\otimes M(A)$ if and only if $A$ is a prime $C^*$-algebra.

Centrally Stable Algebras

We define an algebra $A$ to be centrally stable if, for every epimorhism $φ$ from $A$ to another algebra $B$, the center $Z(B)$ of $B$ is equal to $φ(Z(A))$, the image of the center of $A$. After providing some examples and basic observations, we consider in somewhat greater detail central stability in tensor products of algebras, and finally establish our main result which states that a finite-dimensional unital algebra $A$ over a perfect field $F$ is centrally stable if and only if $A$ is isomorphic to a direct product of algebras of the form $C_i\otimes_{F_i}A_i$, where $F_i$ is a field extension of $F$, $C_i$ is a commutative $F_i$-algebra, and $A_i$ is a central simple $F_i$-algebra.

On the ideal structure of the tensor product of nearly simple algebras

We define a unital algebra $A$ over a field $\mathbb{F}$ to be nearly simple if $A$ contains a unique non-trivial ideal $I_A$ such that $I_A^2 \neq \{0\}$. If $A$ and $B$ are two nearly simple algebras, we consider the ideal structure of their tensor product $A \otimes B$. The obvious non-trivial ideals of $A \otimes B$ are: $$I_A \otimes I_B, \quad I_A \otimes B, \quad A \otimes I_B, \quad \mbox{and} \quad I_A \otimes B + A \otimes I_B.$$ The purpose of this paper is to characterize when are all non-trivial ideals of $A \otimes B$ of the above form.

The closure of two-sided multiplications on C*-algebras and phantom line bundles

For a C*-algebra A we consider the problem of when the set $TM_0(A)$ of all two-sided multiplications $x \mapsto axb$ ($a,b \in A$) on A is norm closed, as a subset of B(A). We first show that $TM_0(A)$ is norm closed for all prime C*-algebras A. On the other hand, if $A\cong Γ_0(E )$ is an n-homogeneous C*-algebra, where E is the canonical $\mathbb{M}_n $-bundle over the primitive spectrum X of A, we show that $TM_0(A)$ fails to be norm closed if and only if there exists a $σ$-compact open subset U of X and a phantom complex line subbundle L of E over U (i.e. L is not globally trivial, but is trivial on all compact subsets of U). This phenomenon occurs whenever $n \geq 2$ and X is a CW-complex (or a topological manifold) of dimension $3 \leq d<\infty$.
