Beam Delivery and Beamstrahlung Considerations for Ultra-High Energy Linear Colliders

As part of the Snowmass'21 community planning excercise, the Advanced Accelerator Concepts (AAC) community proposed future linear colliders with center-of-mass energies up to 15 TeV and luminosities up to 50$\times10^{34}$ cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ in a compact footprint. In addition to being compact, these machines must also be energy efficient. We identify two challenges that must be addressed in the design of these machines. First, the Beam Delivery System (BDS) must not add significant length to the accelerator complex. Second, beam parameters must be chosen to mitigate beamstrahlung effects and maximize the luminosity-per-power of the machine. In this paper, we review advances in plasma lens technology that will help to reduce the length of the BDS system and we detail new Particle-in-Cell simulation studies that will provide insight into beamstrahlung mitigation techniques. We apply our analysis to both $e^+e^-$ and $γγ$ colliders.

Statistical properties of undulator radiation in the IOTA storage ring

We study turn-by-turn fluctuations in the number of spontaneously emitted photons from an undulator, installed in the Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) electron storage ring at Fermilab. A theoretical model is presented, showing the relative contributions due to the discrete nature of light emission and to the incoherent sum of fields from different electrons in the bunch. The model is compared with a previous experiment at Brookhaven and with new experiments we carried out at IOTA. Our experiments focused on the case of a large number of longitudinal and transverse radiation modes, a regime where photon shot noise is significant and the total magnitude of the fluctuations is very small. The experimental and data analysis techniques, required to reach the desired sensitivity, are detailed. We discuss how the model and the experiment provide insights into this emission regime, enable diagnostics of small beam sizes, and improve our understanding of beam lifetime in IOTA.

Linear Theory Analysis of Self-Amplified Parametric X-ray Radiation from High Current Density Electron Bunches

Linear theory of the parametric beam instability or the self-amplification of parametric x-ray radiation (PXR) from relativistic electrons in a crystal is considered taking into account finite emittance of the electron beam and absorption of the radiation. It is shown that these factors change essentially the estimation of threshold parameters of the electron bunches for the coherent X-ray generation. The boundary conditions for the linear theory of the effect is analyzed in details and it is shown that the grazing incidence diffraction geometry is optimal for the growth of instability. Numerical estimations of amplification and coherent photon yield in dependence on the electron current density are presented for the case of mm-thickness Si crystal and 100 MeV electrons. Possible improvements of the experimental scheme for optimization of the coherent radiation intensity are discussed.
