A Combinatorial Problem Related to Sparse Systems of Equations

Nowadays sparse systems of equations occur frequently in science and engineering. In this contribution we deal with sparse systems common in cryptanalysis. Given a cipher system, one converts it into a system of sparse equations, and then the system is solved to retrieve either a key or a plaintext. Raddum and Semaev proposed new methods for solving such sparse systems. It turns out that a combinatorial MaxMinMax problem provides bounds on the average computational complexity of sparse systems. In this paper we initiate a study of a linear algebra variation of this MaxMinMax problem.

Experimental Study of DIGIPASS GO3 and the Security of Authentication

Based on the analysis of $6$-digit one-time passwords(OTP) generated by DIGIPASS GO3 we were able to reconstruct the synchronisation system of the token, the OTP generating algorithm and the verification protocol in details essential for an attack. The OTPs are more predictable than expected. A forgery attack is described. We argue the attack success probability is $8^{-5}$. That is much higher than $10^{-6}$ which may be expected if all the digits are independent and uniformly distributed. Under natural assumptions even in a relatively small bank or company with $10^4$ customers the number of compromised accounts during a year may be more than $100$.

New algorithm for the discrete logarithm problem on elliptic curves

A new algorithms for computing discrete logarithms on elliptic curves defined over finite fields is suggested. It is based on a new method to find zeroes of summation polynomials. In binary elliptic curves one is to solve a cubic system of Boolean equations. Under a first fall degree assumption the regularity degree of the system is at most $4$. Extensive experimental data which supports the assumption is provided. An heuristic analysis suggests a new asymptotical complexity bound $2^{c\sqrt{n\ln n}}, c\approx 1.69$ for computing discrete logarithms on an elliptic curve over a field of size $2^n$. For several binary elliptic curves recommended by FIPS the new method performs better than Pollard's.
