Real roots of random orthogonal polynomials with exponential weights

We consider random orthonormal polynomials $$ P_{n}(x)=\sum_{i=0}^{n}ξ_{i}p_{i}(x), $$ where $ξ_{0}$, . . . , $ξ_{n}$ are independent random variables with zero mean, unit variance and uniformly bounded $(2+\ep_0)$-moments, and $\{p_n\}_{n=0}^{\infty}$ is the system of orthonormal polynomials with respect to a general exponential weight $W$ on the real line. This class of orthogonal polynomials includes the popular Hermite and Freud polynomials. We establish universality for the leading asymptotics of the expected number of real roots of $P_n$, both globally and locally. In addition, we find an almost sure limit of the measures counting all roots of $P_n.$ This is accomplished by introducing new ideas on applications of the inverse Littlewood-Offord theory in the context of the classical three term recurrence relation for orthogonal polynomials to establish anti-concentration properties, and by adapting the universality methods to the weighted random orthogonal polynomials of the form $W P_n.$

Heights of polynomials over lemniscates

We consider a family of heights defined by the $L_p$ norms of polynomials with respect to the equilibrium measure of a lemniscate for $0 \le p \le \infty$, where $p=0$ corresponds to the geometric mean (the generalized Mahler measure) and $p=\infty$ corresponds to the standard supremum norm. This special choice of the measure allows to find an explicit form for the geometric mean of a polynomial, and estimate it via certain resultant. For lemniscates satisfying appropriate hypotheses, we establish explicit polynomials of lowest height, and also show their uniqueness. We discuss relations between the standard results on the Mahler measure and their analogues for lemniscates that include generalizations of Kronecker's theorem on algebraic integers in the unit disk, as well as of Lehmer's conjecture.

Equidistribution of zeros of random polynomials

We study the asymptotic distribution of zeros for the random polynomials $P_n(z) = \sum_{k=0}^n A_k B_k(z)$, where $\{A_k\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$ are non-trivial i.i.d. complex random variables. Polynomials $\{B_k\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$ are deterministic, and are selected from a standard basis such as Szegő, Bergman, or Faber polynomials associated with a Jordan domain $G$ bounded by an analytic curve. We show that the zero counting measures of $P_n$ converge almost surely to the equilibrium measure on the boundary of $G$ if and only if $\mathbb{E}[\log^+|A_0|]<\infty$.

Energy integrals and small points for the Arakelov height

We study small points for the Arakelov height on the projective line. First, we identify the smallest positive value taken by the Arakelov height, and we characterize all cases of equality. Next we solve several archimedean energy minimization problems with respect to the chordal metric on the projective line, and as an application, we obtain lower bounds on the Arakelov height in fields of totally real and totally p-adic numbers.

Height bounds for algebraic numbers satisfying splitting conditions

In an earlier work, the first author and Petsche solved an energy minimization problem for local fields and used the result to obtain lower bounds on the height of algebraic numbers all whose conjugates lie in various local fields, such as totally real and totally p-adic numbers. In this paper, we extend these techniques and solve the corresponding minimization programs for real intervals and p-adic discs, obtaining several new lower bounds for the height of algebraic numbers all of whose conjugates lie in such sets.
