A free boundary inviscid model of flow-structure interaction

We obtain the local existence and uniqueness for a system describing interaction of an incompressible inviscid fluid, modeled by the Euler equations, and an elastic plate, represented by the fourth-order hyperbolic PDE. We provide a~priori estimates for the existence with the optimal regularity $H^{r}$, for $r>2.5$, on the fluid initial data and construct a unique solution of the system for initial data $u_0\in H^{r}$ for $r\geq3$. An important feature of the existence theorem is that the Taylor-Rayleigh instability does not occur.

Global well-posedness and exponential decay for a fluid-structure model with small data

We address the system of partial differential equations modeling motion of an elastic body interacting with an incompressible fluid. The fluid is modeled by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations while the structure is represented by a damped wave equation $w_{tt}-Δw + αw_t =0$, where $α>0$. We prove the global existence and exponential decay of strong solutions for small initial data in a suitable Sobolev space. We show that the elastic velocity $w_t$ and the acceleration $w_{tt}$ can be controlled by the $H^2$ elliptic estimates and by the dissipation of the fluid via the free interface. We also find that, even though the vanishing of the final displacement $w$ appears invisible in the energy method, it can be deduced from the preservation of total volume. Our approach allows for any superlinear perturbation of the wave equation.

On the Euler+Prandtl expansion for the Navier-Stokes equations

We establish the validity of the Euler$+$Prandtl approximation for solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the half plane with Dirichlet boundary conditions, in the vanishing viscosity limit, for initial data which are analytic only near the boundary, and Sobolev smooth away from the boundary. Our proof does not require higher order correctors, and works directly by estimating an $L^{1}$-type norm for the vorticity of the error term in the expansion Navier-Stokes$-($Euler$+$Prandtl$)$. An important ingredient in the proof is the propagation of local analyticity for the Euler equation, a result of independent interest.

Existence of global weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in weighted spaces

We obtain a global existence result for the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations with a large class of data allowing growth at spatial infinity. Namely, we show the global existence of suitable weak solutions when the initial data belongs to the weighted space $\mathring M^{2,2}_{\mathcal C}$ introduced in [Z. Bradshaw and I. Kukavica, Existence of suitable weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations for intermittent data, J. Math. Fluid Mech. to appear]. This class is strictly larger than currently available spaces of initial data for global existence and includes all locally square integrable discretely self-similar data. We also identify a sub-class of data for which solutions exhibit eventual regularity on a parabolic set in space-time.

Existence of invariant measures for the stochastic damped KdV equation

We address the long time behavior of solutions of the stochastic Korteweg-de Vries equation $ du + (\partial^3_x u +u\partial_x u +λu)dt = f dt+ΦdW_t$ on ${\mathbb R}$ where $f$ is a deterministic force. We prove that the Feller property holds and establish the existence of an invariant measure. The tightness is established with the help of the asymptotic compactness, which is carried out using the Aldous criterion.

Contrast between Lagrangian and Eulerian analytic regularity properties of Euler equations

We consider the incompressible Euler equations on ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d \in \{ 2,3 \}$. We prove that: (a) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are locally well-posed in spaces with fixed real-analyticity radius (more generally, a fixed Gevrey-class radius). (b) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are well-posed in highly anisotropic spaces, e.g.~Gevrey-class regularity in the label $a_1$ and Sobolev regularity in the labels $a_2,...,a_d$. (c) In Eulerian coordinates both results (a) and (b) above are false.

On the inviscid limit of the Navier-Stokes equations

We consider the convergence in the $L^2$ norm, uniformly in time, of the Navier-Stokes equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions to the Euler equations with slip boundary conditions. We prove that if the Oleinik conditions of no back-flow in the trace of the Euler flow, and of a lower bound for the Navier-Stokes vorticity is assumed in a Kato-like boundary layer, then the inviscid limit holds.

On the local well-posedness of the Prandtl and the hydrostatic Euler equations with multiple monotonicity regions

We find a new class of data for which the Prandtl boundary layer equations and the hydrostatic Euler equations are locally in time well-posed. In the case of the Prandtl equations, we assume that the initial datum $u_0$ is monotone on a number of intervals (on some strictly increasing on some strictly decreasing) and analytic on the complement and show that the local existence and uniqueness hold. The same is true for the hydrostatic Euler equations except that we assume this for the vorticity $ω_0=\partial_y u_0$.

The primitive equations of the atmosphere in presence of vapor saturation

A modification of the classical primitive equations of the atmosphere is considered in order to take into account important phase transition phenomena due to air saturation and condensation. We provide a mathematical formulation of the problem that appears to be new in this setting, by making use of differential inclusions and variational inequalities, and which allows to develop a rather complete theory for the solutions to what turns out to be a nonlinearly coupled system of non-smooth partial differential equations. Specifically we prove global existence of quasi-strong and strong solutions, along with uniqueness results and maximum principles of physical interest.

Existence and Regularity of Invariant Measures for the Three Dimensional Stochastic Primitive Equations

We establish the continuity of the Markovian semigroup associated with strong solutions of the stochastic 3D Primitive Equations, and prove the existence of an invariant measure. The proof is based on new moment bounds for strong solutions. The invariant measure is supported on strong solutions, but is furthermore shown to have higher regularity properties.

The Domain of Analyticity of Solutions to the Three-Dimensional Euler Equations in a Half Space

We address the problem of analyticity up to the boundary of solutions to the Euler equations in the half space. We characterize the rate of decay of the real-analyticity radius of the solution $u(t)$ in terms of $\exp{\int_{0}^{t} \Vert \nabla u(s) \Vert_{L^\infty} ds}$, improving the previously known results. We also prove the persistence of the sub-analytic Gevrey-class regularity for the Euler equations in a half space, and obtain an explicit rate of decay of the radius of Gevrey-class regularity.
