Dynamics of Field Induced Polarization Reversal in Strained Perovskite Ferroelectric Films with c-oriented Polarization

The field-induced polarization reversal in $c$-oriented ferroelectric phase of strained perovskite film has been studied. We show that in additional to the conventional longitudinal switching mechanism, when c-oriented polarization vector changes its modulus, the longitudinal-transversal and transversal mechanisms when the perpendicular component of polarization is dynamically admixed are possible. The later process can occurs either via the straight-abrupt or initially-continues polarization turnover scenario. We specified the obtained results for the case of PbTiO$_{3}$ and BaTiO$_{3}$ ferroelectrics and propose the experimental methods for their investigation.

Polarization vortex domains induced by switching electric field in ferroelectric films with circular electrodes

We describe ferroelectric thin films with circular electrodes and develop a thermodynamic theory that explains previously mysterious experiments. It is found to be especially useful for restricted geometries such as microstructures for which boundary conditions are well known to play an important role in ferroelectric properties. We have explored a new switching mechanism, which consists of an inhomogeneous rotational motion of the polarization and leads to an extended vortex state. The vortex appearance exhibits characteristic properties of a first-order field-induced phase transition: three critical electric fields and the possibility of hysteresis behavior.

Giant Nernst-Ettingshausen oscillations in Semiclassically strong magnetic fields

We consider the Nernst-Ettingshausen (NE) effect in the presence of semiclassically strong magnetic fields for a quasi-two dimensional system with a parabolic or linear dispersion of carriers. We show that the occurring giant oscillations of the NE coefficient are coherent with the recent experimental observation in graphene, graphite and bismuth. In the 2D case we find the exact shape of these oscillations and show that their magnitude decreases/increases with enhancement of the Fermi energy for Dirac fermions/normal carriers. With a crossover to 3D spectrum the phase of oscillations shifts, their amplitude decreases and the peaks become asymmetric.

Graphite vs graphene: scientific background

Nobel Prize in Physics 2010 was given for "groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene." In fact, before graphene has been extracted from graphite and measured, some of its fundamental physical properties have already been experimentally uncovered in bulk graphite. In this Letter to the Nobel Committee we propose to include those findings in the Scientific Background

Comment on "Consistent Interpretation of the Low-Temperature Magnetotransport in Graphite Using the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure 3D Band-Structure Calculations" (arXiv:0902.1925)

In 2004 we have shown that substantial part of conductivity in graphite is provided by holes with massless linear spectrum - Dirac Fermions that coexist with massive normal carriers - electrons. In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 166403 (2009), arXiv:0902.1925] Schneider et al. revised our conclusion pointed that both types of carriers are massive. Since both groups use the same method of phase determination of Shubnikov de Haas oscillation we comment here that the controversy originates from the improper treatment of experimental results in Schneider2009 et al.

Phase Transition between the Cholesteric and Twist Grain Boundary C Phases

The upper critical temperature Tc2 for the phase transition between the Cholesteric phase (N*) and the Twist Grain Boundary C phase with the layer inclination tilted to the pitch axis (TGBct) in thermotropic liquid crystals is determined by the mean field Chen-Lubensky approach. We show that the N*-TGBct phase transition is split in two with the appearance of either the TGBA or the TGB2q phase in a narrow temperature interval below Tc2. The latter phase is novel in being superposed from two degenerate TGBct phases with different (left and right) layers inclinations to the pitch axis.
