On the dualization of scalars into (d-2)-forms in supergravity. Momentum maps, R-symmetry and gauged supergravity

We review and investigate different aspects of scalar fields in supergravity theories both when they parametrize symmetric spaces and when they parametrize spaces of special holonomy which are not necessarily symmetric (Kahler and Quaternionic-Kahler spaces): their role in the definition of derivatives of the fermions covariant under the R-symmetry group and (in gauged supergravities) under some gauge group, their dualization into (d-2)-forms, their role in the supersymmetry transformation rules (via fermion shifts, for instance) etc. We find a general definition of momentum map that applies to any manifold admitting a Killing vector and coincides with those of the holomorphic and tri-holomorphic momentum maps in Kahler and Quaternionic-Kahler spaces and with an independent definition that can be given in symmetric spaces. We show how the momentum map occurs ubiquitously: in gauge-covariant derivatives of fermions, in fermion shifts, in the supersymmetry transformation rules of (d-2)-forms etc. We also give the general structure of the Noether-Gaillard-Zumino conserved currents in theories with fields of different ranks in any dimension.

Covariant action and equations of motion for the eleven dimensional multiple M0-brane system

We study the properties of the covariant supersymmetric and kappa-symmetric action for a system of N nearly coincident M0-branes (mM0 system) in flat eleven dimensional (11D) superspace and obtain supersymmetric equations for this dynamical system. Although a single M0-brane is the massless 11D superparticle, center of energy motion of the mM0 system is characterized by a nonnegative constant mass M constructed from the matrix fields describing the relative motion of mM0 constituents. We show that a bosonic solution of the mM0 equations can be supersymmetric iff this effective mass vanishes, M=0, and that all the supersymmetric bosonic solutions preserve just one half of the 11D supersymmetry.

Non-Abelian tensor hierarchy in (1,0) D=6 superspace

We present a set of constraints on superfield strengths of the non-Abelian p-form potentials in D=6 (1,0) superspace which reproduces, as their selfconsistency conditions, the equations of motion of the recently proposed (1,0) superconformal theory. These include the anti-self-duality conditions for the field strength of the non-Abelian 2-form potential, duality between field strengths of the non-Abelian vectors and 3-forms as well as of the non-Abelian four forms and scalar fields.

Multiple M0-brane system in an arbitrary eleven dimensional supergravity background

The equations of motion of multiple M0{brane (multiple M-wave or mM0) system in an arbitrary D = 11 supergravity superspace, which generalize the Matrix model equations for the case of inter- action with a generic 11D supergravity background, are obtained in the frame of superembedding approach. We also derive the BPS equations for supersymmetric bosonic solutions of these mM0 equations and show that the set of 1/2 BPS solutions contain a fuzzy sphere modeling M2 brane as well as that the Nahm equation appears as a particular case of the 1/4 BPS equations.

On pure spinor formalism for quantum superstring and spinor moving frame

The D=10 pure spinor constraint can be solved in terms of spinor moving frame variables and 8-component complex null vector which can be related to the kappa-symmetry ghost. Using this and similar solutions for the conjugate pure spinor and other elements of the non-minimal pure spinor formalism we present a (hopefully useful) reformulation of the measure of the pure spinor path integral for superstring in terms of products of Cartan form corresponding to the coset of 10D Lorentz group and to the coset of complex orthogonal group SO(8,C). Our study suggests a possible complete reformulation of the pure spinor superstring in terms of new irreducible set of variable.

Supermembrane interaction with dynamical D=4 N=1 supergravity. Superfield Lagrangian description and spacetime equations of motion

We obtain the complete set of equations of motion for the interacting system of supermembrane and dynamical D=4 N = 1 supergravity by varying its complete superfield action and writing the resulting superfield equations in the special gauge where the supermembrane Goldstone field is set to zero. We solve the equations for auxiliary fields and discuss the effect of dynamical generation of cosmological constant in the Einstein equation of interacting system and its renormalization due to some regular contributions from supermembrane. These two effects (discussed in late 70th and 80th, in the bosonic perspective and in the supergravity literature) result in that, generically, the cosmological constant has different values in the branches of the spacetime separated by the supermembrane worldvolume.

Extended supersymmetry in massless conformal higher spin theory

We propose superfield equations in tensorial N-extended superspaces to describe the N=2,4,8 supersymmetric generalizations of free conformal higher spin theories. These can be obtained by quantizing a superparticle model in N-extended tensorial superspace. The N-extended higher spin supermultiplets just contain scalar and 'spinor' fields in tensorial space so that, in contrast with the standard (super)space approach, no nontrivial generalizations of the Maxwell or Einstein equations to tensorial space appear when N>2. For N=4,8, the higher spin-tensorial components of the extended tensorial superfields are expressed through additional scalar and spinor fields in tensorial space which obey the same free higher spin equations, but that are axion-like in the sense that they possess Peccei-Quinn-like symmetries.

Superfield equations for the interacting system of D=4 N=1 supermembrane and scalar multiplet

We present the superfield action for the dynamical N=1 D=4 supermembrane in interaction with a dynamical scalar multiplet and use it to derive the superfield equations of motion. These include the supermembrane equations, which formally coincide with equations of supermembrane in a background of the (off-shell) scalar multiplet, and the special chiral superfield equations with supermembrane source. In the case when the scalar supermultiplet part of the action contains only the simplest kinetic term we have also extracted the spacetime component field equations from the superfield equations and solve these in the leading order on supermembrane tension. The inclusion of nontrivial superpotential and relation with known supersymmetric domain wall solutions is briefly discussed.

Three form potential in (special) minimal supergravity superspace and supermembrane supercurrent

This contribution begins the study of the complete superfield Lagrangian description of the interacting system of D=4 N=1 supergravity (SUGRA) and supermembrane. Firstly, we review a 'three form supergravity' by Ovrut and Waldram, which we prefer to call 'special minimal supergravity'. This off-shell formulation of simple SUGRA is appropriate for our purposes as the supermembrane action contains the so-called Wess-Zumino term given by the integral over a three form potential in superspace, C3. We describe this formulation in the frame of Wess--Zumino superfield approach, showing how the basic variations of minimal SUGRA are restricted by the conditions of the existence of a three-form potential C3 in its superspace. In this language the effect of dynamical generation of cosmological constant, known to be characteristic for this formulation of SUGRA, appears in its superfield form, first described by Ogievetsky and Sokatchev in their formulation of SUGRA as a theory of axial vector superfield. Secondly, we vary the supermembrane action with respect to the special minimal SUGRA superfields (basic variations) and obtain the supercurrent superfields as well as the supergravity superfield equations with the supermembrane contributions.

M(atrix) model interaction with 11D supergravity

We present the equations of motion for multiple M0-brane (mM0) system in an arbitrary curved supergravity superspace which generalizes the M(atrix) model equations for the case of arbitrary supergravity background. Although these were obtained in the frame of superembedding approach to mM0, we do not make a review of this approach in this contribution but concentrate discussion on the structure of the equations.

Multiple M-wave interaction with fluxes

We present the equations of motion for multiple M0-brane (multiple M-wave or mM0) system in general eleven dimensional supergravity background. These are obtained in the frame of superembedding approach, but have a rigid structure: they can be restored from SO(1,1) x SO(9) symmetry characteristic for M0. BPS conditions for the 1/2 supersymmetric solution of these equations have the fuzzy 2-sphere solution describing M2-brane.

On multiple M2-brane model(s) and its N=8 superspace formulation(s)

We give a brief review of Bagger-Lambert-Gustavsson (BLG) model, with emphasis on its version invariant under the volume preserving diffeomorphisms (SDiff3) symmetry. We describe the on-shell superfield formulation of this SDiff3 BLG model in standard N=8, d=3 superspace, as well as its superfield action in the pure spinor N=8 superspace. We also briefly address the Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena (ABJM/ABJ) model invariant under $SU(M)_{k}\times SU(N')_{-k}$ gauge symmetry, and discuss the possible form of their N=6 and, for the case of Chern-Simons level k=1,2, N=8 superfield equations.

Spacetime Brout-Englert-Higgs effect in General Relativity interacting with p-brane matter

We review the manifestation of the Brout-Englert-Higgs effect in general relativity interacting with point-like and extended objects (p-branes including string for p=1 and membrane for p=2), which manifests itself in the appearance of the brane source in the Einstein equation while the graviton remains massless (hep-th/0112207, hep-th/0507197 and refs therein), and discuss briefly its relation and differences with the model for massive spin 2 field proposed recently by G. t'Hooft in [arXiv:0708.3184 [hep-th]].

Superembedding approach to Dp-branes, M-branes and multiple D(0)-brane systems

We review the superembedding approach to M-branes and Dp-branes, in its form based on the universal (D and p-independent) superembedding equation, and its recent application in searching for supersymmetric and Lorentz covariant description of multiple Dp-brane systems. In particular, we present the structure of the multiple D0-brane equation as follows from our superembedding description and show that it describes the dielectric effect firstly noticed by Emparan and then by Myers. We also discuss briefly the relation with the boundary fermion approach by Howe, Lindstrom and Wulff.

Superembedding approach to M0-brane and multiple M0-brane system

We study the possibility to describe multiple M0-brane system in the frame of superembedding approach. The simplest framework is provided by the maximally supersymmetric non-Abelian SU(N) Yang-Mills supermultiplet on the d=1 N=16 superspace the embedding of which to the target D=11 supergravity superspace is determined by the so-called superembedding equation, characteristic of the worldline superspace of a single M0-brane. We use it to obtain a covariant generalization of the Matrix model equations describing the multiple M0-system in flat target superspace.

Towards the M(atrix) model action in an arbitrary 11D supergravity background. Progress report

We are searching for the action principle for multiple M0-brane (multiple M-wave or mM0) system starting from the mM0 equations of motion obtained in the frame of superembedding approach. Surprisingly, the way from these equations to the action happens to be hampered by a problem which suggests a possible generalization of the action principle which we call "hierarchical action principle".

Superspace formulations of the (super)twistor string

The superspace formulation of the worldvolume action of twistor string models is considered. It is shown that for the Berkovits-Siegel closed twistor string such a formulation is provided by a N=4 twistor-like action of the tensionless superstring. A similar inverse twistor transform of the open twistor string model (Berkovits model) results in a dynamical system containing two copies of the D=4, N=4 superspace coordinate functions, one left-moving and one right-moving, that are glued by the boundary conditions. We also discuss possible candidates for a tensionful superstring action leading to the twistor string in the tensionless limit as well as multidimensional counterparts of twistor strings in the framework of both `standard' superspace and superspace enlarged by tensorial coordinates (tensorial superspaces), which constitute a natural framework for massless higher spin theories.

BPS preons in supergravity and higher spin theories. An overview from the hill of twistor appraoch

We review briefly the notion of BPS preons, first introduced in 11-dimensional context as hypothetical constituents of M-theory, in its generalization to arbitrary dimensions and emphasizing the relation with twistor approach. In particular, the use of a 'twistor-like' definition of BPS preon (almost) allows us to remove supersymmetry arguments from the discussion of the relation of the preons with higher spin theories and also of the treatment of BPS preons as constituents. We turn to the supersymmetry in the second part of this contribution, where we complete the algebraic discussion with supersymmetric arguments based on the M-algebra (generalized Poincare superalgebra), discuss the possible generalization of BPS preons related to the osp(1|n) (generalized AdS) superalgebra, review a twistor-like kappa-symmetric superparticle in tensorial superspace, which provides a point-like dynamical model for BPS preon, and the role of BPS preons in the analysis of supergravity solutions. Finally we describe resent results on the concise superfield description of the higher spin field equations and on superfield supergravity in tensorial superspaces.

Various Faces of Type IIA Supergravity

We derive a duality-symmetric action for type IIA D=10 supergravity by the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction of the duality-symmetric action for D=11 supergravity with the 3-form and 6-form gauge field. We then double the bosonic fields arising as a result of the Kaluza-Klein dimensional reduction and add mass terms to embrace the Romans's version, so that in its final form the bosonic part of the action contains the dilaton, NS-NS and RR potentials of the standard type IIA supergravity as well as their duals, the corresponding duality relations are deduced directly from the action. We discuss the relation of our approach to the doubled field formalism by Cremmer, Julia, Lu and Pope, complete the extension of this construction to the supersymmetric case and lift it onto the level of the proper duality-symmetric action. We also find a new dual formulation of type IIA D=10 supergravity in which the NS-NS two-form potential is replaced with its six-form counterpart. A truncation of this dual model produces the Chamseddine's version of N=1, D=10 supergravity.

Generalized action principle and extrinsic geometry for N=1 superparticle

It is proposed the generalized action functional for N=1 superparticle in D=3,4,6 and 10 space-time dimensions. The superfield geometric approach equations describing superparticle motion in terms of extrinsic geometry of the worldline superspace are obtained on the base of the generalized action. The off-shell superdiffeomorphism invariance (in the rheonomic sense) of the superparticle generalized action is proved. It was demonstrated that the half of the fermionic and one bosonic (super)fields disappear from the generalized action in the analytical basis. Superparticle interaction with Abelian gauge theory is considered in the framework of this formulation. The geometric approach equations describing superparticle motion in Abelian background are obtained.

On a Zero Curvature Representation for Bosonic Strings and $p$-Branes

It is shown that a zero curvature representation for $D$-- dimensional $p$-- brane equations of motion originates naturally in the geometric (Lund- Regge- Omnes) approach. To study the possibility to use this zero curvature representation for investigation of nonlinear equations of $p$-- branes, the simplest case of $D$-- dimensional string ($p=1$) is considered. The connection is found between the $SO(1,1)$ gauge (world--sheet Lorentz) invariance of the string theory with a nontrivial dependence on a spectral parameter of the Lax matrices associated with the nonlinear equations describing the embedding of a string world sheet into flat $D$-- dimensional space -- time. Namely, the spectral parameter can be identified with a parameter of constant $SO(1,1)$ gauge transformations, after the deformation of the Lax matrices has been performed.

String-Like Description of Gravity and Possible Applications for F-theory

The Lorentz harmonic formulation of D-dimensional bosonic p-brane theory with $D\geq (p+1)(p+2)/2$ coupled to an antisymmetric tensor field of rank d=(p+1) provides the dynamical ground for the description of d=(p+1) dimensional Gravity. It hence realizes the idea of Regge and Teitelboim on a 'string-like' description of gravity. The simplest nontrivial models of such a kind are provided by free D-dimensional p-branes in which world volumes are embedded as minimal surfaces. Possible applications of such a model with d=2+2 and D=2+10 for studying a geometry of bosonic sector of F-theory are considered. Some speculations inspired by the proposed model are presented.
