Gluon TMD fragmentation function into quarkonium

We compute the gluon transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at next-to-leading order (NLO) into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet $^3S_1^{[8]}$ channel, based on the NRQCD factorization approach. The spurious rapidity divergences are explicitly shown to cancel in a well-defined TMDFF, which incorporates the needed soft factor. We also compute the integrated gluon FF at NLO in the same $^3S_1^{[8]}$ channel, and show that the matching coefficient of the TMDFF onto the FF at large transverse momentum is the expected one. These results are relevant to perform precise and sensible phenomenological studies of transverse-momentum spectra of quarkonium production, for which the production mechanism through fragmentation plays a relevant role, like in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

The vector boson transverse momentum distributions

The transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMD) are an essential part of the factorization theorems in vector boson production. They are non-perturbative, double scale dependent functions that asymptotically match onto collinear parton distributions functions (PDF). Once TMD are expressed using PDF, one observes that they are sensitive to the choice and quality of PDF sets (PDF bias). A solution to this problem is found and discussed. Nevertheless the main source of error on vector boson spectra still comes from PDF uncertainty propagation.

Transverse momentum dependent distributions in dijet and heavy hadron pair production at EIC

We discuss the measurement of gluon transverse momentum distribution (TMD) in dijet and heavy hadron pair (HHP) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The factorization of these processes in impact parameter space shows the appearance of a specific new soft factor matrix element on top of angular a complex valued anomalous dimensions. We show in detail how these features can be treated consistently and we discuss a scale prescription for the evolution kernel of the dijet soft function. As a result we obtain phenomenological predictions for unpolarized and angular modulated cross-sections for the electron-ion collider (EIC) using current available information on unpolarized TMD.

Transverse momentum dependent operator expansion at next-to-leading power

We develop a method of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) operator expansion that yields the TMD factorization theorem on the operator level. The TMD operators are systematically ordered with respect to TMD-twist, which allows a certain separation of kinematic and genuine power corrections. The process dependence enters via the boundary conditions for the background fields. As a proof of principle, we derive the TMD factorization up to the next-to-leading power $(\sim q_T/Q)$ at the next-to-leading order for any process with two detected states.

Non-perturbative contributions to vector-boson transverse momentum spectra in hadronic collisions

Experimental measurements of Drell-Yan (DY) vector-boson production are available from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and from lower-energy collider and fixed-target experiments. In the region of low vector-boson transverse momenta $q_T$, which is important for the extraction of the $W$-boson mass at the LHC, QCD contributions from non-perturbative Sudakov form factors and intrinsic transverse momentum distributions become relevant. We study the potential for determining such contributions from fits to LHC and lower-energy experimental data, using the framework of low-$q_T$ factorization for DY differential cross sections in terms of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution functions. We investigate correlations between different sources of TMD non-perturbative effects, and correlations with collinear parton distributions. We stress the relevance of accurate DY measurements at low masses and with fine binning in transverse momentum for improved determinations of long-distance contributions to Sudakov evolution processes and TMDs.

Non-perturbative structure of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic and Drell-Yan scattering at small transverse momentum

We consider semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) and Drell-Yan events within transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization. Based on the simultaneous fit of multiple data points, we extract the unpolarized TMD distributions and the non-perturbative evolution kernel. The high quality of the fit confirms a complete universality of TMD non-perturbative distributions. The extraction is supplemented by phenomenological analyses of various parts of the TMD factorization, such as sensitivity to non-perturbative parameterizations, perturbative orders, collinear distributions, correlations between parameters, and others.

Probing Transverse-Momentum Distributions With Groomed Jets

We present the transverse momentum spectrum of groomed jets in di-jet events for $e^+e^-$ collisions and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS). The jets are groomed using a soft-drop grooming algorithm which helps in mitigating effects of non-global logarithms and underlying event. At the same time, by reducing the final state hadronization effects, it provides a clean access to the non-perturbative part of the evolution of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions. In SIDIS experiments we look at the transverse momentum of the groomed jet measured w.r.t. the incoming hadron in the Breit frame. Because the final state hadronization effects are significantly reduced, the SIDIS case allows to probe the TMD parton distribution functions. We discuss the sources of non-perturbative effects in the low transverse momentum region including novel (but small) effects that arise due to grooming. We derive a factorization theorem within SCET and resum any large logarithm in the measured transverse momentum up to NNLL accuracy using the $ζ$-prescription as implemented in the artemide package and provide a comparison with simulations.

TMD factorization for dijet and heavy-meson pair in DIS

We study a transverse momentum dependent (TMD) factorization framework for the processes of di-jet and heavy meson pair production in deep-inelastic-scattering in an electron-proton collider, considering the measurement of the transverse momentum imbalance of the two hard probes in the Breit frame. For the factorization theorem we employ soft-collinear and boosted-heavy-quark effective field theories. The factorized cross-section for both processes is sensitive to gluon unpolarized and linearly polarized TMD distributions and requires the introduction of a new soft function. We calculate the new soft function here at one loop, regulating rapidity divergences with the $δ$-regulator. In addition, using a factorization consistency relation and a universality argument regarding the heavy-quark jet function, we obtain the anomalous dimension of the new soft function at two loops.

Linearly polarized gluons at next-to-next-to leading order and the Higgs transverse momentum distribution

We calculate the small-b (or large-qT) matching of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distribution for linearly polarized gluons to the integrated gluon distributions at the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). This is the last missing part for the complete NNLO prediction of the Higgs spectrum within TMD factorization. We discuss the numerical impact of the correction so derived to the qT-differential cross-section for Higgs boson production and to the positivity bound for linearly polarized gluon transverse momentum distribution.

The Transverse Momentum Dependent Fragmentation Function at NNLO

We calculate the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), evaluating separately TMD soft factor and TMD collinear correlator. For the first time the cancellation of spurious rapidity divergences in a properly defined individual TMD beyond the first non-trivial order is shown. This represents a strong check of the given TMD definition. We extract the matching coefficient necessary to perform the transverse momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. The universal character of the soft function, which enters the definition of all (un)polarized TMD distribution/fragmentation functions, facilitates the future calculation of all the other TMDs and their coefficients at NNLO, pushing forward the accuracy of theoretical predictions for the current and next generation of high energy colliders.

The Universal Transverse Momentum Dependent Soft Function at NNLO

All (un)polarized transverse momentum dependent functions (TMDs), both distribution and fragmentation functions, are defined with the same universal soft function, which cancels spurious rapidity divergences within an individual TMD and renders them well-defined hadronic quantities. Moreover, it is independent of the kinematics, whether it is Drell-Yan, deep inelastic scattering or $e^+e^-\rightarrow 2$ hadrons. In this paper we provide this soft function at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), necessary for the calculation of all TMDs at the same order, and to perform the resummation of large logarithms at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. From the results we obtain the $D$ function at NNLO, which governs the evolution of all TMDs. This work represents the first independent and direct calculation of this quantity. Given the all order relation through a Casimir scaling between the soft function relevant for gluon TMDs and the one for quark TMDs, we also obtain the first at NNLO. The used regularization method to deal with the rapidity divergences is discussed as well.

Perturbative and non-perturbative QCD effects in transverse momentum distributions

The recent formulation of the factorization theorem for transverse momentum spectra in terms of well-defined transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs), allows for a better understanding of the role of the perturbative and non-perturbative QCD contributions and their interplay. In particular, non-perturbative effects are often included both in the evolution of the TMDs and in the modeling of their scale-independent part. Using the available Drell-Yan and $Z$-production data at low and high energy we show that, for the currently available dilepton invariant mass values, the TMD evolution is driven mainly by its perturbative contribution, while the needed non-perturbative correction is scale independent. We then detail the difference between the scale dependences in the high and low boson transverse momentum regime and discuss the related theoretical errors.

A Unified Treatment of the QCD Evolution of All (Un-)Polarized TMD Functions: Collins Function as a Study Case

By considering semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and the (complementary) $q_T$-spectrum for Drell-Yan lepton pair production we derive the QCD evolution for all the leading-twist transverse momentum dependent distribution and fragmentation functions. We argue that all of those functions evolve with $Q^2$ following a \emph{single} evolution kernel. This kernel is independent of the underlying kinematics and it is also spin-independent. Those features hold, in impact parameter space, to all values of $b_T$. The evolution kernel presented has all of its large logarithms resummed up next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy, which is the highest possible accuracy given existing perturbative calculations. As a study case we apply this kernel to investigate the evolution of Collins function, one of the ingredients that have attracted recently much attention within the phenomenological studies of spin asymmetries. Our analysis can be readily implemented to revisit previously obtained fits that involve data at different scales for other spin-dependent functions. Such improved fits are important to get better predictions --with the correct evolution kernel-- for certain upcoming experiments aiming to measure Sivers function, Collins function, transversity and other spin-dependent functions as well.

Non-perturbative QCD effects in $q_T$ spectra of Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production

The factorization theorems for transverse momentum distributions of dilepton/boson production, recently formulated by Collins and Echevarria-Idilbi-Scimemi in terms of well-defined transverse momentum dependent distributions (TMDs), allows for a systematic and quantitative analysis of non-perturbative QCD effects of the cross sections involving these quantities. In this paper we perform a global fit using all current available data for Drell-Yan and $Z$-boson production at hadron colliders within this framework. The perturbative calculable pieces of our estimates are included using a complete resummation at next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy. Performing the matching of transverse momentum distributions onto the standard collinear parton distribution functions and recalling that the corresponding matching coefficient can be partially exponentiated, we find that this exponentiated part is spin-independent and resummable. We argue that the inclusion of higher order perturbative pieces is necessary when data from lower energy scales are analyzed. We consider non-perturbative corrections both to the intrinsic nucleon structure and to the evolution kernel and find that the non-perturbative part of the TMDs could be parametrized in terms of a minimal set of parameters (namely 2-3). When all corrections are included the global fit so performed gives a $χ^2/{\rm d.o.f.} \lesssim 1$ and a very precise prediction for vector boson production at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

TMDs: Evolution, modeling, precision

The factorization theorem for $q_T$ spectra in Drell-Yan processes, boson production and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering allows for the determination of the non-perturbative parts of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. Here we discuss the fit of Drell-Yan and $Z$-production data using the transverse momentum dependent formalism and the resummation of the evolution kernel. We find a good theoretical stability of the results and a final $χ^2/{\rm points}\lesssim 1$. We show how the fixing of the non-perturbative pieces of the evolution can be used to make predictions at present and future colliders.

Model Independent Evolution of Transverse Momentum Dependent Distribution Functions (TMDs) at NNLL

We discuss the evolution of the eight leading twist transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions, which turns out to be universal and spin independent. By using the highest order perturbatively calculable ingredients at our disposal, we perform the resummation of the large logarithms that appear in the evolution kernel of transverse momentum distributions up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithms (NNLL), thus obtaining an expression for the kernel with highly reduced model dependence. Our results can also be obtained using the standard CSS approach when a particular choice of the $b^*$ prescription is used. In this sense, and while restricted to the perturbative domain of applicability, we consider our results as a "prediction" of the correct value of $b_{\rm max}$ which is very close to $1.5 {\rm GeV}^{-1}$. We explore under which kinematical conditions the effects of the non-perturbative region are negligible, and hence the evolution of transverse momentum distributions can be applied in a model independent way. The application of the kernel is illustrated by considering the unpolarized transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function and the Sivers function.

On Rapidity Divergences in the Soft and Collinear Limits of QCD

We consider the definition of a transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution function (TMDPDF) and its evolution properties given a factorization theorem of Drell- Yan lepton pair production with a non-vanishing transverse momentum. We discuss rapidity divergences that exist in both limits of QCD: the soft and collinear. We argue that only when a specific combination of the soft and collinear matrix elements is formed, rapidity divergences cancel. We also argue that the soft matrix element, calculated in perturbation theory, contains only rapidity divergences and there is no genuine long-distance infra-red divergences.

Soft and Collinear Factorization and Transverse Momentum Dependent Parton Distribution Functions

In this work we consider how a parton distribution function, with an explicit transverse momentum dependence can be properly defined in a regularization-scheme independent manner. We argue that by considering a factorized form of the transverse momentum dependent spectrum for the production of a heavy lepton pair in Drell-Yan reaction, one should first split the relevant soft function into two boost invariant contributions. When those soft contributions are added to the pure collinear contributions, well-defined hadronic matrix elements emerge, i.e., the transverse momentum dependent distributions. We also perform a comparison with Collins' definition.

Towards the Phenomenology of TMD Distributions at NNLL

We discuss the recently proposed scheme for the evolution of Transverse Momentum Distributions using the so-called "D^R". We discuss a new method to separate perturbative and non-perturbative effects in the analysis of the evolution of Transverse Momentum Distributions. We argue that the scheme is compatible with the standard CSS resummation approach when the running of the strong coupling is taken into account properly.

Definition and Evolution of Transverse Momentum Distributions

We consider the definition of unpolarized transverse-momentum-dependent parton distribution functions while staying on-the-light-cone. By imposing a requirement of identical treatment of two collinear sectors, our approach, compatible with a generic factorization theorem with the soft function included, is valid for all non-ultra-violet regulators (as it should), an issue which causes much confusion in the whole field. We explain how large logarithms can be resummed in a way which can be considered as an alternative to the use of Collins-Soper evolution equation. The evolution properties are also discussed and the gauge-invariance, in both classes of gauges, regular and singular, is emphasized.

Factorization Theorem For Drell-Yan At Low q_T And Transverse-Momentum Distributions On-The-Light-Cone

We derive a factorization theorem for Drell-Yan process at low q_T using effective field theory methods. In this theorem all the obtained quantities are gauge invariant and the special role of the soft function--and its subtraction thereof--is emphasized. We define transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDPDFs) which are free from light-cone singularities while all the Wilson lines are defined on-the-light-cone. We show explicitly to first order in α_s that the partonic Feynman PDF can be obtained from the newly defined partonic TMDPDF by integrating over the transverse momentum of the parton inside the hadron. We obtain a resummed expression for the TMDPDF, and hence for the cross section, in impact parameter space. The universality of the newly defined matrix elements is established perturbatively to first order in α_s. The factorization theorem is validated to first order in α_s and also the gauge invariance between Feynman and light-cone gauges.

SCET, Light-Cone Gauge and the T-Wilson Lines

Soft-Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) has been formulated since a decade now in covariant gauges. In this work we derive a modified SCET Lagrangian applicable in both classes of gauges: regular and singular ones. This extends the range of applicability of SCET. The new Lagrangian must be used to obtain factorization theorems in cases where the transverse momenta of the particles in the final states are not integrated over, such as semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan and the Higgs production cross-section at low transverse momentum. By doing so all non-perturbative matrix elements appearing in the factorized cross-sections are gauge invariant.

preprint2010arXiv

Singular and Regular Gauges in Soft Collinear Effective Theory: The Introduction of the New Wilson Line T

Gauge invariance in soft-collinear effective theory (SCET) is discussed in regular (covariant) and singular (light-cone) gauges. It is argued that SCET, as it stands, is not capable to define in a gauge invariant way certain non-perturbative matrix elements that are an integral part of many factorization theorems. Those matrix elements involve two quark or gluon fields separated not only in light-cone direction but also in the transverse one. This observation limits the range of applicability of SCET. To remedy this we argue that one needs to introduce a new Wilson line as part of SCET formalism, that we call T. This Wilson line depends only on the transverse component of the gluon field. As such it is a new feature to the SCET formalism and it guarantees gauge invariance of the non-perturbative matrix elements in both classes of gauges.

preprint2010arXiv

The T-Wilson Line

We argue that soft-collinear effective theory, as is currently formulated, lacks an ingredient which is essential for obtaining a gauge invariant definitions of certain non-perturbative matrix elements relevant for semi-inclusive high-energy processes. Those processes and the companion cross-sections are to be analyzed and measured at the Large Hadron Collider. The missing feature is a gauge link constructed only from the transverse component of the gluon field denoted by the "$T$-Wilson line"'. It is neither soft nor collinear. As such it is a new feature of the theory.

R-evolution: Improving perturbative QCD

Perturbative QCD results in the MSbar scheme can be dramatically improved by switching to a scheme that accounts for the dominant power law dependence on the factorization scale in the operator product expansion. We introduce the ``MSR scheme'' which achieves this in a Lorentz and gauge invariant way. The MSR scheme has a very simple relation to MSbar, and can be easily used to reanalyze MSbar results. Results in MSR depend on a cutoff parameter R, in addition to the mu of MSbar. R variations can be used to independently estimate i) the size of power corrections, and ii) higher order perturbative corrections (much like mu in MSbar). We give two examples at three-loop order, the ratio of mass splittings in the B*-B and D*-D systems, and the Ellis-Jaffe sum rule as a function of momentum transfer Q in deep inelastic scattering. Comparing to data, the perturbative MSR results work well even for Q ~ 1 GeV, and the size of power corrections is reduced compared to those in MSbar.

Charged Kaon K^+ --> 3 pi CP Violating Asymmetries vs epsilon'_K / epsilon_K

We present the next-to-leading order full results in Chiral Perturbation Theory for the charged Kaon K --> 3 pi slope g CP violating asymmetries. We discuss the constraints that a measurement of these asymmetries would impose on the Standard Model results of epsilon_K' and search for new physics. We also study the kind of information that such measurement can provide on Im G_8, Im (e^2 G_E) and higher order weak couplings.

CP Violation in rare semileptonic B decays and supersymmetry

We study the effect of new flavor changing SUSY phases arising in the squark mass matrix in semileptonic decays B->Xs ll and B->K(*) ll (l=e,mu). SUSY effects are parametrized using the mass insertion approximation formalism. Constraints on SUSY contributions coming from other processes (e.g. b->s gamma, B->K* ll) are taken into account. Chargino and gluino contributions to photon and Z-mediated decays are included and non-perturbative corrections are considered. We study the correlation between the CP (and forward--backward) asymmetries and the expected value of the inclusive branching ratio. Several possible scenarios are distinguished and discussed according to the mass insertion that is considered.

The Supersymmetric Flavor Problem for Heavy First-Two Generation Scalars at Next-to-Leading Order

We analyze in detail the constraints on SUSY-model parameters obtained from K-Kbar mixing in the hypothesis of a splitted SUSY spectrum. FCNC contributions from gluino-squark-quark interactions are studied in the so-called mass insertion approximation. We present boundaries on mass insertions and on SUSY mass scales. We improve previous results by including the NLO-QCD corrections to Delta S=2 effective Hamiltonian and the complete set of B-parameters for the evaluation of hadronic matrix elements. A full set of magic-numbers, that can be used for further analyses of these models, is also given. We find that the inclusion of NLO-QCD corrections and the B-parameters change the results obtained at LO and in the Vacuum Insertion Approximation by an amount of about 25-35%.
