Breaking of universal relationships of axial wI-modes in hybrid stars: rapid and slow hadron-quark conversion scenarios

Multi-messenger astronomy with gravitational waves is a blooming area whose limits are not clear. After the first detection of binary black hole merger and the famous event GW170817 and its electromagnetic counterpart, the compact-object astrophysical community is starting to grasp the physical implications of such event and trying to improve numerical models to compare with future observations. Moreover, recent detections made by the NICER collaboration increased the tension between several theoretical models used to describe matter in the inner core of compact objects. In this paper, we focus on quadrupolar purely spacetime wI-modes of oscillating compact objects described using a wide range of hybrid equations of state able to include several theoretical possibilities of exotic matter in the inner core of such stars. We study the case in which a sharp first order hadron-quark phase transition occurs and explore the scenarios of rapid and slow phase conversions at the interface. We put special attention on the validity of universal relationships for the oscillation frequency and damping time that might help unravel the mysteries hidden at the inner cores of compact objects. We show that, within the slow conversion regime where extended branches of hybrid stars appear, universal relationships for wI-modes proposed in the literature do not hold.

Constraining mass, radius and tidal deformability of compact stars with axial wI modes: new universal relations including slow stable hybrid stars

We revisit asteroseismology with quadrupolar wI modes and present universal relationships for its fundamental and first overtone. In contrast to relationships proposed in the literature, our universal relationships are capable of including slow stable hybrid stars that appear when considering slow sharp hadron-quark phase transitions. We show that, if the frequency and damping time of the fundamental mode of a given pulsating object are measured, its mass, radius, and dimensionless tidal deformability can be inferred. Moreover, we show that the errors of such estimates are smaller than a few percent for the mass and radius. For the dimensionless tidal deformability, the errors are -- for compact objects with $M\gtrsim 1.4\,M_\odot$ -- in general smaller than ~100%. Comparison with previous universal relationships shows that the ones proposed in this work produce better estimates of the mass and radius of totally stable compact objects.

Hybrid magnetized stars in the context of multi-messenger astronomy

The most recent detections of LIGO/Virgo and NICER have placed strong constraints on neutron stars' properties. In this work, we study neutron stars modeling them as hybrid stars, compact objects with a quark matter core surrounded by layers of hadronic matter. In addition, we consider the presence of strong magnetic fields, motivated by magnetars detection, like the recently discovered Swift J1818.0-1607. We incorporate the effects of the anomalous magnetic moment of the constituent particles into the equation of state of dense matter and analyze the implications of different hadron-quark phase transitions on the dynamic stability of these compact objects. This study shows that the constraints on the mass, radius, and tidal deformability, imposed by observations of massive pulsars and gravitational waves can be satisfied within the framework of our model.

Oscillating magnetised hybrid stars under the magnifying glass of multi-messenger observations

We model neutron stars as magnetised hybrid stars with an abrupt hadron-quark phase transition in their cores, taking into account current constraints from nuclear experiments and multi-messenger observations. We include magnetic field effects considering the Landau level quantisation of charged particles and the anomalous magnetic moment of neutral particles. We construct the magnetised hybrid equation of state, and we compute the particle population, the matter magnetisation and the transverse and parallel pressure components. We integrate the stable stellar models, considering the dynamical stability for \emph{rapid} or \emph{slow} hadron-quark phase conversion. Finally, we calculate the frequencies and damping times of the fundamental and $g$ non-radial oscillation modes. The latter, a key mode to learn about phase transitions in compact objects, is only obtained for stars with slow conversions. For low magnetic fields, we find that one of the objects of the GW170817 binary system might be a hybrid star belonging to the slow extended stability branch. For magnetars, we find that a stronger magnetic field always softens the hadronic equation of state. Besides, only for some parameter combinations a stronger magnetic field implies a higher hybrid star maximum mass. Contrary to previous results, the incorporation of anomalous magnetic moment does not affect the studied astrophysical quantities. We discuss possible imprints of the microphysics of the equation of state that could be tested observationally in the future, and that might help infer the nature of dense matter and hybrid stars.

Delta baryons and diquark formation in the cores of neutron stars

We investigate the hadron-quark phase transition in cold neutron stars in light of (i) the observed limits on the maximum-mass of heavy pulsars, (ii) constraints on the tidal properties inferred from the gravitational waves emitted in binary neutron-star mergers, and (iii) mass and radius constraints derived from the observation of hot spots on neutron star observed with NICER. Special attention is directed to the possible presence of $Δ(1232)$ baryons in neutron star matter. Our results indicate that this particle could make up a large fraction of the baryons in neutron stars and thus have a significant effect on the properties of such objects, particularly on their radii. This is partially caused by the low density appearance of $Δ$s for a wide range of theoretically defensible sets of meson-hyperon, SU(3) ESC08 model, and meson-$Δ$ coupling constants. The transition of hadronic matter to quark matter, treated in the 2SC+s condensation phase, is found to occur only in neutron stars very close to the mass peak. Nevertheless, quark matter may still constitute an appreciable fraction of the stars' total matter if the phase transition is treated as Maxwell-like (sharp), in which case the neutron stars located beyond the gravitational mass peak would remain stable against gravitational collapse. In this case, the instability against gravitational collapse is shifted to a new (terminal) mass different from the maximum-mass of the stellar sequence, giving rise to stable compact objects with the same gravitational masses as those of the neutron stars on the traditional branch, but whose radii are smaller by up to 1 km. All models for the equation of state of our study fall comfortably within the bound established very recently by Annala {\it et al.} (Nature Physics, 2020)

Estrellas híbridas con núcleos superconductores de color

The aim of this work is the study of hybrid stars interiors from the equations of state describing the matter composing them. We used modern hadronic equations of state to describe the matter in the outer core of these stars. The quark phase is modeled by an extended version of the Field Correlator Method, in which vector interactions among quarks and color superconductivity are included. We analyze the effect of these two contributions on the mass-radius relationship and tidal deformability. This is a relevant quantity for neutron stars after the GW170817 event, allowing to impose additional constraints to the equation of state of these compact objetcs.

The Constant-Sound-Speed parameterization for NJL models of quark matter in hybrid stars

The discovery of pulsars as heavy as 2 solar masses has led astrophysicists to rethink the core compositions of neutron stars, ruling out many models for the nuclear equations of state (EoS). We explore the hybrid stars that occur when hadronic matter is treated in a relativistic mean-field approximation and quark matter is modeled by three-flavor local and non-local Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL) models with repulsive vector interactions. The NJL models typically yield equations of state that feature a first order transition to quark matter. Assuming that the quark-hadron surface tension is high enough to disfavour mixed phases, and restricting to EoSes that allow stars to reach 2 solar masses, we find that the appearance of the quark matter core either destabilizes the star immediately (this is typical for non-local NJL models) or leads to a very short hybrid star branch in the mass-radius relation (this is typical for local NJL models). Using the Constant-Sound-Speed parametrization we can see that the reason for the near-absence of hybrid stars is that the transition pressure is fairly high and the transition is strongly first order.

An internal mechanism for the anti-glitch observed in AXP 1E 2259+586

Magnetars are fascinating objects that are thought to be neutron stars powered by their strong internal magnetic fields. Clear evidence of a sudden spin-down was detected in the Anomalous X-ray Pulsar AXP 1E 2259+586, an object cataloged as a magnetar. This event received the name "anti-glitch". In this work we present a simple internal mechanism which could account for the observed sudden spin-down of the star.

Magnetised Accretion Discs in Kerr Spacetimes II: Hot Spots

Context. Quasi-periodic variability has been observed in a number of X-ray binaries harboring black hole candidates. In general relativity, black holes are uniquely described by the Kerr metric and, according to the cosmic censorship conjecture, curvature singularities always have to be clothed by an event horizon. Aims. In this paper, we study the effect of an external magnetic field on the observed light curves of orbiting hot spots in thin accretion discs around Kerr black holes and naked singularities. Methods. We employ a ray-tracing algorithm to calculate the light curves and power spectra of such hot spots as seen by a distant observer for uniform and dipolar magnetic field configurations assuming a weak coupling between the magnetic field and the disc matter. Results. We show that the presence of an external dipolar magnetic field leads to potentially observable modifications of these signals for both Kerr black holes and naked singularities, while an external uniform magnetic field has practically no effect. In particular, we demonstrate that the emission from a hot spot orbiting near the innermost stable circular orbit of a naked singularity in a dipolar magnetic field can be significantly harder than the emission of the same hot spot in the absence of such a magnetic field. Conclusions. The comparison of our model with observational data may allow us study the geometry of magnetic fields around compact objects and to test the cosmic censorship conjecture in conjunction with other observables such as thermal continuum spectra and iron line profiles.

Scalar Resonances in Axially Symmetric Spacetimes

We study properties of resonant solutions to the scalar wave equation in several axially symmetric spacetimes. We prove that non-axial resonant modes do not exist neither in the Lanczos dust cylinder, the $(2+1)$ extreme BTZ spacetime nor in a class of simple rotating wormhole solutions. Moreover, we find unstable solutions to the wave equation in the Lanczos dust cylinder and in the $r^2 <0$ region of the extreme $(2+1)$ BTZ spacetime, two solutions that possess closed timelike curves. Similarities with previous results obtained for the Kerr spacetime are explored.

A simple mechanism for the anti-glitch observed in magnetar 1E 2259+586

In this short communication we present a simple internal mechanism that accounts for the recently observed anti-glitch in magnetar 1E 2259+586. We propose that the decay of an internal toroidal magnetic field component would de-stabilize an originally stable prolate star configuration. Then, the subsequent rearrangement of the stellar structure would give rise to a "more spherical" configuration, resulting in a sudden spin-down of the whole star. We present here some order of magnitude calculation to give confidence to this scenario, using the simplest analytical stellar model and let more detailed calculations for a more technical future paper.

Magnetised accretion discs in Kerr spacetimes

We study the effect caused by external magnetic fields on the observed thermal spectra and iron line profiles of thin accretion discs formed around Kerr black holes and naked singularities. We aim to provide a tool that can be used to estimate the presence of magnetic fields in the neighbourhood of a compact object and to probe the cosmic censorship conjecture in these particular astrophysical environments. We developed a numerical scheme able to calculate thermal spectra of magnetised Page-Thorne accretion discs formed around rotating black holes and naked singularities as seen by an arbitrary distant observer. We incorporated two different magnetic field configurations: uniform and dipolar, using a perturbative scheme in the coupling constant between matter and magnetic field strength. Under the same assumptions, we obtained observed synthetic line profiles of the 6.4 keV fluorescent iron line. We show that an external magnetic field produces potentially observable modifications on the thermal energy spectrum and the fluorescent iron line profile. Thermal energy spectra of naked singularities are harder and brighter than those from black holes, and in addition, peak and cut-off energies are affected by the external magnetic field. Moreover, iron line profiles of slowly rotating black holes suffer more changes by a uniform magnetic field, while nearly extremal black holes and naked singularities are more altered in the dipolar case. Based on our calculations, we discard the possibility of modelling the archetypal black-hole candidate in Cygnus X-1 as a naked singularity. Comparison of our models with observational data can be used to probe the cosmic censorship conjecture and to estimate the existence and global geometry of magnetic fields around compact objects by fitting the thermal energy spectra and iron line profiles of X-ray binaries.

Instabilities in Kerr Spacetimes

We present a generalization of previous results regarding the stability under gravitational perturbations of nakedly singular super extreme Kerr spacetime and Kerr black hole interior beyond the Cauchy horizon. To do so we study solutions to the radial and angular Teukolsky's equations with different spin weights, particulary $s=\pm 1$ representing electromagnetic perturbations, $s=\pm 1/2$ representing a perturbation by a Dirac field and $s=0$ representing perturbations by a scalar field. By analizing the properties of radial and angular eigenvalues we prove the existence of an infinite family of unstable modes.

preprint2012arXiv

Unstable fields in Kerr spacetimes

We show that both the interior region $r<M-\sqrt{M^2-a^2}$ of a Kerr black hole and the $a^2>M^2$ Kerr naked singularity admit unstable solutions of the Teukolsky equation for any value of the spin weight. For every harmonic number there is at least one axially symmetric mode that grows exponentially in time and decays properly in the radial directions. These can be used as Debye potentials to generate solutions for the scalar, Weyl spinor, Maxwell and linearized gravity field equations on these backgrounds, satisfying appropriate spatial boundary conditions and growing exponentially in time, as shown in detail for the Maxwell case. It is suggested that the existence of the unstable modes is related to the so called "time machine" region, where the axial Killing vector field is time-like, and the Teukolsky equation, restricted to axially symmetric fields, changes its character from hyperbolic to elliptic.

Magnetars as Highly Magnetized Quark Stars: an analytical treatment

We present an analytical model of a magnetar as a high density magnetized quark bag. The effect of strong magnetic fields (B > 5 x 10^{16} G) in the equation of state is considered. An analytic expression for the Mass-Radius relationship is found from the energy variational principle in general relativity. Our results are compared with observational evidences of possible quark and/or hybrid stars.

Properties of Magnetized Quark-Hybrid Stars

The structure of a magnetized quark-hybrid stars (QHS) is modeled using a standard relativistic mean-field equation of state (EoS) for the description of hadronic matter. For quark matter we consider a bag model EoS which is modified perturbatively to account for the presence of a uniform magnetic field. The mass-radius (M-R) relationship, gravitational redshift and rotational Kepler periods of such stars are compared with those of standard neutron stars (NS).
