New asymptotic techniques for the partial wave cut-off method for calculating the QED one loop effective action

The Gel'fand-Yaglom theorem has been used to calculate the one-loop effective action in quantum field theory by means of the "partial-wave-cutoff method". This method works well for a wide class of background fields and is essentially exact. However, its implementation has been semi-analytical so far since it involves solving a non-linear ordinary differential equation for which solutions are in general unknown. Within the context of quantum electrodynamics (QED) and $O(2)\times O(3)$ symmetric backgrounds, we present two complementary asymptotic methods that provide approximate analytical solutions to this equation. We test these approximations for different background field configurations and mass regimes and demonstrate that the effective action can indeed be calculated with good accuracy using these asymptotic expressions. To further probe these methods, we analyze the massless limit of the effective action and obtain its divergence structure with respect to the radial suppression parameter of the background field, comparing our findings with previously reported results.

Non-perturbative Quantum Propagators in Bounded Spaces

We outline a new approach to calculating the quantum mechanical propagator in the presence of geometrically non-trivial Dirichlet boundary conditions based upon a generalisation of an integral transform of the propagator studied in previous work (the so-called ``hit function''), and a convergent sequence of Padé approximants. In this paper the generalised hit function is defined as a many-point propagator and we describe its relation to the sum over trajectories in the Feynman path integral. We then show how it can be used to calculate the Feynman propagator. We calculate analytically all such hit functions in $D=1$ and $D=3$ dimensions, giving recursion relations between them in the same or different dimensions and apply the results to the simple cases of propagation in the presence of perfectly conducting planar and spherical plates. We use these results to conjecture a general analytical formula for the propagator when Dirichlet boundary conditions are present in a given geometry, also explaining how it can be extended for application for more general, non-localised potentials. Our work has resonance with previous results obtained by Grosche in the study of path integrals in the presence of delta potentials. We indicate the eventual application in a relativistic context to determining Casimir energies using this technique.

Multiloop QED in the Euler-Heisenberg approach

I summarize what is known about the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and its multiloop corrections for scalar and spinor QED, in various types of constant fields, and in various dimensions. Particular attention is given to the asymptotic properties of the weak-field expansion of the Lagrangian, which via Borel summation is related to Schwinger pair-creation, and the status of the "exponentiation conjecture" for the imaginary part of the Euler-Heisenberg to all loop orders.

A projective Dirac operator on $\mathbb{C}P^n$ and extended SUSY

We construct a universal spin$_c$ Dirac operator on $\mathbb{C}P^n$ built by projecting $su(n+1)$ left actions and prove its equivalence to the standard right action Dirac operator on $\mathbb{C}P^n$. The eigenvalue problem is solved and the spinor space constructed thereof, showing that the proposed Dirac operator is universal, changing only its domain for different spin$_c$ structures. Explicit expressions for the chirality and the eigenspinors are also found and consistency with the index theorem is established. Also, the extended $\mathcal{N} =2$ supersymmetry algebra is realised through the Dirac operator and its companion supercharge, and an expression for the superpotential of any spin$_c$ connection on $\mathbb{C}P^n$ is found and generalised to any spin coset manifold $G/H$ with $G,H$ compact, connected, and $G$ semisimple. The $R$-symmetry of this superalgebra is found to be equivalent to the $U(1)$ holonomy of the spin$_c$ connection.

Worldline Numerics for Energy-Momentum Tensors in Casimir Geometries

We develop the worldline formalism for computations of composite operators such as the fluctuation induced energy-momentum tensor. As an example, we use a fluctuating real scalar field subject to Dirichlet boundary conditions. The resulting worldline representation can be evaluated by worldline Monte-Carlo methods in continuous spacetime. We benchmark this worldline numerical algorithm with the aid of analytically accessible single-plate and parallel-plate Casimir configurations, providing a detailed analysis of statistical and systematic errors. The method generalizes straightforwardly to arbitrary Casimir geometries and general background potentials.

Polarization Tensors for the fuzzy Grassmannians $Gr_{2;n}^F$ and Grassmannian harmonics on $Gr_{2;n}$

We explicitly construct the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian for the fuzzy Grassmannian spaces $Gr_{2;n}^F$. We calculate the spectrum and find it be a truncation of the continuum case. As a byproduct of our approach we find a novel expression for the Grassmannian harmonics in terms of Plucker coordinates which can be interpreted as free Schrodinger particle wave functions on $Gr_{2;n}$.

Scalar and Spinor Field Actions on Fuzzy $S^4$: fuzzy $CP^3$ as a $S^2_F$ bundle over $S^4_F$

We present a manifestly Spin(5) invariant construction of squashed fuzzy $CP^3$ as a fuzzy $S^2$ bundle over fuzzy $S^4$. We develop the necessary projectors and exhibit the squashing in terms of the radii of the $S^2$ and $S^4$. Our analysis allows us give both scalar and spinor fuzzy action functionals whose low lying modes are truncated versions of those of a commutative $S^4$.

Energy-momentum tensors with worldline numerics

We apply the worldline formalism and its numerical Monte-Carlo approach to computations of fluctuation induced energy-momentum tensors. For the case of a fluctuating Dirichlet scalar, we derive explicit worldline expressions for the components of the canonical energy-momentum tensor that are straightforwardly accessible to partly analytical and generally numerical evaluation. We present several simple proof-of-principle examples, demonstrating that efficient numerical evaluation is possible at low cost. Our methods can be applied to an investigation of positive-energy conditions.

The Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian beyond one loop

We review what is presently known about higher loop corrections to the Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian and its Scalar QED analogue. The use of those corrections as a tool for the study of the properties of the QED perturbation series is outlined. As a further step in a long-term effort to prove or disprove the convergence of the N photon amplitudes in the quenched approximation, we present a parameter integral representation of the three-loop Euler-Heisenberg Lagrangian in 1+1 dimensional QED, obtained in the worldline formalism.
